Musical Fireworks Championships come to Southport

Oct 2 2010
THE sky over Southport bedazzled hundreds of awestruck onlookers in a breathtaking fireworks display.

Last night marked the opening of the weekend-long British Musical Fireworks Championships 2010.

The resort is hosting this year’s extravaganza, which will see some of the industry’s top display teams go head to head to show their mastery of pyrotechnics.

The competitors will show how fireworks can be combined with music, both modern and classical.

Such skills are in demand all over the country and the world, with New Year’s Eve spectaculars in particular being an opportunity for a city to show itself off to the whole planet with a show that sticks in the memory.

The teams will be performing in Kings Gardens tonight and Sunday from 7pm until 10pm.

Tickets are priced from £4 to £20, and the under-fives get in for free.

I went into a bookstore the other day and asked the woman behind the counter where the self-help section was. She said, "If I told you, that would defeat the whole purpose." (note: "self-help" has two meanings 1) you take without paying 2) you can choose as you like)No money (http://www.igtto.com/) no way in real life,no gold (http://www.igtto.com/gold_game.php?id=2) no way in game!

Plans for music festival venue on Southport Pleasureland ride site

PLANS to create a new music festival venue on the former site of an amusement park rollercoaster were revealed today.

A stretch of land at Southport’s New Pleasureland – once home to the £5m TRAUMAtizer ride – was set aside for the project.

Organisers are hoping to host a series of gigs and performances there throughout the summer.

TRAUMAtizer was removed by the park’s previous owner after the funfair suddenly folded in 2006 and was transported to Blackpool.

The festival was the brainchild of New Pleasureland director Norman Wallis.

He said: “This is a fantastic location. There is a lot of parking and space and we want to attract big names to perform here.

“It would not be just for one festival but a series of festivals for all types of music – rock, country, folk.

“We want to get local bands involved as well as star names and make Southport a place to be proud of.”

Can someone at Sefton Council please give this man an extended lease, instead of holding out for Urban 'We've got ideas but no money' Splash?

Despite only being handed year-to-year leases, thereby limiting what can be done on the site, Norman Wallis has proven this is still a viable site to locate a funfair, and with additional events like the monster truck show and now the proposed music festival, he is ensuring Southport's offer remains fresh and appealing.

That site could easily have lain derelict since September 2006. Instead, through Norman Wallis' efforts, it has been attracting visitors to the town every summer since. I think Sefton Council owe him a debt of gratitude, that should be repaid with an extended lease.

Sorry to bump the thread with no information, but..

How has the Scarisbrick Avenue redevelopment turned out? I've not had the chance to go to Southport for a couple of years now and last time I was there they were just starting the works. Also, what about the new block of flats they were building behind, are they finished? I know they stalled for a period. I've searched the internet and can't find any images or news (other than 1 article).

I was there a couple of months ago and the flats have resumed construction and were starting to take shape at the time. They don't look like anything special though. The avenue itself is very disappointing. The surfacing isn't bad, but a lot of the shops down there seem to have closed down so it feels very windswept. My visit was in March mind, so it may pick up for the summer season.

They're pretty much finished.

Southport Party’s beach hut call for Birkdale beach
Aug 16 2011
by Tom Bristow, Midweek Visiter

BEACH huts should be built on Birkdale beach to support our ‘Classic Resort’ credentials, according to the Southport Party.

They are calling for iconic beach huts to be built by the shrimpers’ compound at the end of Weld Road.

Harry Forster from the Southport Party said: “We think as a classic resort we need something there which utilises the beach.

“At the moment is being covered with grass.”

There are around 23,000 beach huts in the country with some worth up to £120,000.

He called for around 12 huts to be built to the right of the compound.

“There is an area there which is not utilised at all,” said Harry.

The party members have now written a letter to Sefton Council Chief Executive Margaret Carney outlining the idea.

Beach huts could be sponsored by the council and rented out or installed by private owners with council planning permission.

Casino decides time is right to roll

20 Apr 2012, 10:53

Nearly four years after Genting Casino signed a 25-year lease on a 15,000 sq ft unit at Neptune Development's £30m Waterfront in Southport, the casino operator is to start fitting out.

Genting signed a prelet in July 2008 but held off from the expenditure of the fit-out due to the market downturn. Genting has paid rent to Neptune on the empty unit and operated from its existing site in the Southport in the meantime. The company plans to relocate to the new venue in early 2013.

Steve Parry, managing director of Neptune, said: "We are delighted with this news. We have been eagerly awaiting the news that Genting are ready to move to The Waterfront and we have already started to receive an increased level of enquiries about the remaining units."

Tapas restaurant Fino's signed for 3,300 sq ft in July 2011 at the Waterfront and started trading in September but there remains around 50,000 sq ft of vacant leisure and retail space at the scheme.

Parry said restaurant operators, a well-known coffee bar chain, a national health and fitness chain and other businesses are showing interest in moving to Southport.

Genting Group, parent of the Stanley casino brand, is the largest casino operator in the UK with more than 40 casinos, including Crockfords Club and Maxims Casino Club in London.

Parry added: "The premises which Genting are moving into was built to their particular requirements and with their stunning proposals for the fit-out, Southport will be home to one of the stylish new casinos in the country."

The new premises will include a terrace looking out over the Marine Lake and dedicated on-site parking.

The agents for the development are Graham Bowling of Fitton Estates and Peter Mowbray of Mowbray Gill.
