View Full Version : A Little Help from My Friends - Your Liverpool Quotes
kev April 3rd, 2005, 07:23 PM Gentlemen - First of all let me apologise for this post not being linked to skysrapers but its still a Liverpool thread - I need your help.
On my site I have a random quote section that displays random quotes about this wonderful city from people past and present. Example:
"My love of New York, is something to do with Liverpool. There is the same quality of energy in both cities." - John Lennon, 1971
"Liverpool is second to London in my heart." - Charles Dickens, 1842
And it goes on....
I love this forum and the positive aspects of Liverpool it portrays and I would love your quotes about Liverpool and its people. I will include the quote on the random quote generator with your nickname.
What do you say?
Have a little think and see what you come up with. Your help with this is appreciated.

Awayo April 3rd, 2005, 09:05 PM That crew of Liverpool hard cases had in them the right stuff. It's my experience they always have. It is the sea that gives it--the vastness, the loneliness surrounding their dark stolid souls

Red scouser April 3rd, 2005, 09:09 PM "A lot of football success is in the mind. You must believe you are the best and then make sure that you are. In my time at Liverpool we always said we had the best two teams on Merseyside, Liverpool and Liverpool Reserves."
Bill Shankly
"My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. Napoleon had that idea. He wanted to conquer the bloody world. I wanted Liverpool to be untouchable. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until eventually everyone would have to submit and give in."
Bill Shankly

Awayo April 4th, 2005, 06:14 PM None from me, but one more from the great works of English (or American) literature:
Besides, of all sea-ports in the world, Liverpool, perhaps, most abounds in all the variety of land-sharks, land-rats, and other vermin, which make the hapless mariner their prey. In the shape of landlords, bar-keepers, clothiers, crimps, and boarding-house loungers, the land-sharks devour him, limb by limb; while the land-rats and mice constantly nibble at his purse.
Other perils he runs, also, far worse; from the denizens of notorious Corinthian haunts in the vicinity of the docks, which in depravity are not to be matched by any thing this side of the pit that is bottomless.
And yet, sailors love this Liverpool; and upon long voyages to distant parts of the globe, will be continually dilating upon its charms and attractions, and extolling it above all other seaports in the world. For in Liverpool they find their Paradise— not the well known street of that name—and one of them told me he would be content to lie in Prince's Dock till he hove up anchor for the world to come.
Herman Melville, Redburn (1848)

Michael Foot, Liverpool Daily Post, 8 March 1935
When at Thy call my weary feet I turn
The gates of paradise are opened wide
At Goodison I know a man can learn
Rapture more rich than Anfield can provide.
In Coulter's skill and Geldard's subtle speed
I see displayed in all its matchless bounty
The power of which the heavens decreed
The fall of Sunderland and Derby County.
The hands of Sagar, Dixie's priceless head
Made smooth the path to Wembley till that day
When Bolton came. Now hopes are fled
And all is sunk in bottomless dismay.
And so I watch with heart and temper cool
God's lesser breed of men at Liverpool.
Scarecrow April 25th, 2005, 09:10 PM Is he the Labour nut who supports Plymouth? :?

sloyne April 30th, 2005, 08:03 PM Brummies claims their city to be the UK's second city as do Glaswegians and likewise Mancunians who are very loud in their assertions that their town is the UK's second city. Not so Scousers, they know that London is the UK's second city.
