Impressive, but not the kind of cities I like.. I certainly don't like these cities, only consisting of no-architecture-at-all buildings.. I'd really like to see some of these towers in my own town, but the density of Shenzen is just terrifying. Wouldn't like to live there :(

^^ there are also less dense areas in Shenzhen :)

These are so called urban villages, they grew on the former villages. There are numerous such villages in Shenzhen and I think majority of Shenzhen population lives in such settlements, certainly the majority of Shenzhen floating population.

"As a historically sedimented entity, the urban village needs some further attention. When SEZ "happened" the agricultural land that the farmers had was taken from them. As compensation they were allowed to build up their village and make their income by letting out the newly acquired space. The original fabric of village was quite rapidly replaced by six to nine story extrusions usually only few meters away of each other. Government turned a blind eye to the uncontrolled urbanization process that violated all building codes. It was a status quo on the basis of compensation for lost agricultural land. As it was private property, the villagers had total jurisdiction and even had their own law enforcement officers.

Urban Village is the only historically sedimented artifact in the whole urban landscape of Shenzhen. They grew out of original fishing and farming villages. These villages, formed in time, were evolved out of human needs thus made in human scale. The open space was intricately connected and interwoven, where small allies led to internal courtyards that led to main streets and squares (Image 10). The street grid persisted and new extrusions were grafted onto. Although the housing units are quite high and the FAR ratio is even higher, the human scale of the villages is still a positive quality as opposed to the grand design ideologies of the “official” part of Shenzhen.

Urban Villages are nowadays considered as the places for lower middle class; the newcomers. It is the first step of the newly developing social ladder."

I've been to nearly every major cities in EU. None is comparable ( including London, Frankfurt, etc.) to SZ in skyline. In fact , SZ leaves them by a mile. The only cities have a chance to beat SZ are mainly the leading N. American heavyweights, and HK, SH.

chaotic train ride from hong kong. city is hugh. typical chinese developing city. was in shenzhen in 2001. skyline looks boxy and not as exciting as other big cities. will give it an 8 for the sheer size of the city and skyline.

10/10, Yes it may not be Shanghai or Hong Kong, but after i went there, Shenzhen is a city on its own, another type of beauty.

great at night but boring at day.... however, skyline is typical of China;s... I will rate this at 8.5/10.

most of the people now in china are living in building apartment... thats why their cities mostly looks like this one,, impressive but too boxy...

man, with kingkey, east pacific business center, hankwok city center, nikko, and ping'an Shenzhen will probably rise a few in the skyline list.

8/10 wow so many building in the city but need more iconic building to catch up with Hongkong and Shanghai

Shenzhen is very impressive from certain points of view, and quite disappointing from others. The skyline is massive but shattered, so I cannot give it higher than 7.5/10.

Beautiful, when the first time I we skyline is WOW !!! One of the best in world.
