I couldn't get over the number of Aussies in Singapore when visiting. (obviously dwarfed by the number of Indians/Malaysians, but the number of Aussie accents was impressive.) Of course they could all be shorter term visitors, with it being the London-Australia hub for many Airlines.

The UK im certain....there are 3 aussie bars in my town of only 40,000 and they're full of aussies every night!

One of my best friend is an aussie...

Probably because there country is so much like theres...you might not think it is....but you go to Oz....they speak like us, eat the same food as us....heck they even were us if you know what I mean!

Even I'd assume it to be the UK. I mean, doesn't Oz still have a rather strong connection to the UK? I'd assume next that it would be the US, but then again I have no idea. However, there are three Aussies alone just at the Ritz Carlton Hotel I work for.

surely the US which has always been very closely connected with Oz? There would be many hundreds of thousands of Aussie ex pats over there in an economy which is 6 times bigger than UK and population 5 times bigger.

Well where i live, Southampton, there are loads of Aussies, i didn't realise how many lived here.

I think you guys tend to assocaited more with us than the Americans, our cultures are pretty similar (pubs, beer, rugby, cricket, etc), and I read an article in a paper once that said even thou us Brits and you Aussies have a love hate relationship, if we were both in a room with an american, we would stick together.

I was actually quite suprised with the Aussie culture when I was over there, you're stuck halfway between British Culture and American culture, which i think is quite nice because it's neither here nore there, is unique. My friend who was travelling with me said if the UK started over again we would have a society pretty close to what modern Australia is.

I loved the whole commonwealth/colonialism over in Aus as well, the old victorian buildings and archictecture.

there is a wbsite www.southern-cross-group.org that lists estimated expat groups in 2001. Bear in mind that some countries allow dual citizenship and some results may surprise you:

Well, judging from that list, it is definitely the UK and Greece in the top two spots. But when you add up all the different US cities, that comes out to 84,000, which would make the US number three, and I'd assume that if you continued counting down the list (cities not listed) that the US would probably eventually overtake Greece for number two.

I found it interesting that Vancouver, Canada, came in at number 5 with 30,000, and NYC with only 15,000. Of course, it makes sense that West Coast NA cities dominate (LA, San Fran, Vancouver), because that is the side that is "closer" to Oz. I'd love to see an expanded list to see where my city (Atlanta) ranks.

What about Canada? If not the highest, but one of the highest.

Obviously, Canada was a part of the British Empire for even longer than Australia was. It'll make sense when you think about it. So, it's not that surprising that Vancouver's got that many Australian expats. (and so does Whistler with its Aussie ski lift operators too!)

Keep in mind that Canada does not allow dual citizenship for Australians. I know, because my dad is Australian by birth, having been born in Parramatta and grown up all over NSW during his childhood. He had to give up his Australian citizenship in order to gain Canadian citizenship in 1981. He ended up in Alberta only because a fellow lawyer (my dad is one, too) offered him a job up in Grande Prairie (pop. ~45,000), some 465 km NW of Edmonton. He's stuck to that place ever since, because he and my mom liked it better raising us kids in a smaller city, as GP at that time was less than 1/4 the size it is today.

If this had not happened, I'd have likely ended up growing up in Vancouver or in Greater Vancouver/Lower Mainland! It's because my parents immigrated to Canada in 1968 by taking a ship to Halifax from the UK, then took a train all the way to Edmonton. Then if that job offer had not happened, then they might've gone on further west.

But what the hell, I got a brother in Greater Vancouver anyways, complete with a new niece! :D

Well apparently 160,000 New Zealand Born people live in Sydney, but alot of them had kids in Sydney as well, so I'd say the population of people who claim to be in New Zealand could be anywhere between 200-350k, Mayby more.

I've heard 400,000 kiwis in Aus - and that probably doesnt include the ones that took out citizenship.

The thing that sux is that if your kid is born here (in Aus) they are a "Nzer by descent' and their kids cant be kiwis - unless your kid lives in nZ for two years and becomes a proper citizen. Sux to think your grandkids link to NZ can just be cut off like that, but I imagine thats the case with most countries.

I assume it is much easier for an Australian to move to Canada than the US - being commonwealth countries and all. Then again, I don't really know. I've never looked in at moving to Canada. I just know it's nearlly impossible to move to the US.

Having said that, even though I wanted to move overseas when I was 18, now I am approaching my mid 20s I don't want to live anywhere else. I couldn't think of anything worse than living in the US.

Whistler IS Australian!! Vancouver has lots too. Good God, Kits Beach might as well be called St Kilda, except substitute the cakes shops for Capers. Not such big presence in Toronto but Australians don't exactly tolerate anything under -2C very well and T.dots so big nobody sticks out. Aussie's are a pretty rare sight in Ottawa and Montreal but on the plus side - those are the cities where your Ozzieness is most likely to get you free drinks .... among other things. Oui Oui New Meat. In Vancouver think oh gee, another one.

Still, Vancouver is probably the most popular because its on the ocean, stoned to high hell and its the perfect place to be unemployed. Its one of those places your just so busy with nothingness that the concept of employment is an evil thought. Toronto is more like Melbourne, ok Melbourne with red trams. Not terribly bum friendly. Its more for the urban creatures (that work $$$) of the world that like theatre and culture. Dirty words to those snowboarding dudes back west enjoying unemployment or part time waiter jobs in Vansterdam.

Personally I'd go for the Government jobs in Ottawa. The locals will love you. Just make your name look somewhat french on your CV so you'll get a job. The fact that you don't speak french doesn't matter as long as 'you think' your billingual. Just throw in le and la's in sentences which is what most of the locals do. Most don't know what the hell they're on about. Thats enough for most here. Besides free booze and proximity to Whorèal - how can Vansterdam and Melbonto compare with that. Be stong - 30C is nothing wussies!

we can do whatever we want (except vote?) in either country by just flashing our own passports......

Sorry I have been to the US five or six times and I find it benal and boring the culture is free, but restrictingly conservative.

The cities are nice but too similar, and there is a fear of culture and the locals are so caught up in what happnes in their own country that they can't understand the contempt that other countries have towards them.

If it was a choice of living in Europe or the US there is only one choice for me!

I say for me BTW (oh and even though my location says Glasgow, I am actually living in Sydney at the moment!

^ Canada should offer Dual Citizenship for us :(

Actually, Canada has offered dual citizenship for quite some time (dual US-Canada citizenship has been commonplace since the 80s)...

Australia changed its own laws in 2002 (repeal of Section 17 of the Australian Citizenship Act), and now allows dual citizenship. Unfortunately, it's not retroactive, so those who missed the boat will have to re-apply for Australian citizenship.

Coincidentally, Vancouver is also the top Canadian destination for Expat Brits. Aussies and Brits do think alike :D

On the other hand, the top Canadian destination for ex-pat Americans continues to be Calgary, I guess it has something to do with all the provinces' oil.
