Los Angeles Kings
The ever so colourful Staples Center in Los Angeles.
It opened in 1999, and is home to the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, and Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers. Seats 18,500 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and more for concerts... and I think Wrestlemania has been held here this year!

Jaybird April 5th, 2005, 10:17 PM Very cool... 8/10. Meh, it looks to me like more of a theme park atmosphere or shopping mall!
TexasBoi April 5th, 2005, 11:29 PM I like it 9/10. Good looking arena.
PornStar April 5th, 2005, 11:33 PM that's a really nice arena, maybe a bit too flashy for my taste, but still nice 8/10
Zaqattaq April 5th, 2005, 11:33 PM 10/10 for the arena 0/10 for the fucking bitchass Lakers so 5/10 :tongue2:
rantanamo April 6th, 2005, 12:06 AM LOL. Lakers, I sort of like. Kobe on the other hand................................
HoldenV8 July 19th, 2005, 08:36 PM Wrestlemania XXI held on April 3, 2005 set the record attendance for the Staples Center when 20,193 fans showed up. The event sold out in less than 1 hour indicating that a much larger venue could have been booked.
TalB July 19th, 2005, 11:10 PM I will give it a 9 since it does have a very good location, but it looses a point fro the fact that that it's sometimes overrated for an arena.
soup or man July 19th, 2005, 11:16 PM I give it a 9 out of 10. You should see it at night when like 20 search lights are beaming in the sky.
Plus at Christmas time, instead of blue, it lights up green and red.

rantanamo July 20th, 2005, 09:14 PM Imagination. The interior of the Superdome is very akin to the Palace at Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit. The exterior is like a cross of GM Place and Charlotte's new arena.

en1044 March 26th, 2009, 10:05 PM I remember seeing a game here about 5 years ago when I was visiting my uncle. I've also seen a game at the Forum, and I gotta say it was a more enjoyable experience.
ryebreadraz March 26th, 2009, 11:29 PM An absolutely terrible place to watch a game. I'm a Laker fan and attend 15 games a year or so and I hate games there. It's designed with optimal profit in mind and ease to change from one event to another without any consideration for the fans. There probably isn't a worse seat in the NBA than the top level at Staples Center. The seats aren't steep at all and the sound just disappears at the top. Throw in that the signage sucks so it's tough to get any stats and I wish the place would just go away.

KingmanIII March 28th, 2009, 09:48 AM I agree with everyone here who finds that three-tiered monstrosity of skyboxes off-putting.

Philips Arena only had 92 luxury boxes compared to Staples Center's 160 so I don't think Staples Center could have followed that mold. There just isn't enough room on one side of an arena for 160 boxes unless you were you to do 9 levels or suites or so.
Jim856796 June 20th, 2009, 05:13 AM The Staples Centre has 160 luxury boxes, which could probably be the most of any indoor arena in the world (if there aren't any other indoor arenas with more luxury boxes). And one more fact: The Los Angeles Lakers won the 2009 NBA Championship by defeating the Orlando Magic.
nyrmetros June 20th, 2009, 05:38 AM I saw a LA Kings vs Denver NHL game there back in November. I paid $30 for an upper deck seat but wound up sitting 12 rows from behind the glass. What a weird place!!

They wouldn't have had to just stack the suites...you could still build another tier of suites (or maybe even two), just not three.

As Far as I know they are still all sold out, and have been basically since it opened. In the last couple years they have been adding in courtside suites because the original 180 weren't enough.

CaliLove24 June 21st, 2009, 09:02 AM Staples needs to be cheaper so the real Laker fans can come and support their team.I Like how the laker games were bright now the crowd is darken and all the light are on the Court. I believe in knicks games they do the same. The Luxury stuff,Is that why there is such a huge gap between the lower bowl and the top bowl?

ryebreadraz June 23rd, 2009, 12:35 AM American Airlines Center's seating bowl isn't much different, you know...
It's actually quite different. The club level is separated and raised, giving the higher seats a better angle. The suites are also more ingrained into the walls of the raised levels so they don't stand out as much and don't require the three stacked levels of suites that causes such a divide at Staples.
Ganis June 23rd, 2009, 01:32 AM Their is also a large level of club seating between the 2 suite levels.

CaliLove24 June 24th, 2009, 01:31 AM So are the Luxury stuff the thing that seperates staples lower bowl from the top bowl b/c there's a huge gap? On tv is so dark in staples that it only looks like theres a lower bowl b/c you can't see the top bowl.
REDcrazy June 24th, 2009, 06:01 AM The new "dark" lighting in the crowd is part of the Lakers' efforts to improve the lighting quality for their games and put the focus on the court just as it should be. It enhanced the lighting for TV especially HD and has been described by some as "Cinema Quality Lighting". In fact it's only the Lakers who use this lighting system. Their co-tenants the Clippers use the older system. (see difference below as shot on a double header day on the same camera)

ryebreadraz June 24th, 2009, 06:04 AM Some other teams in the league use it too, but I'm not a fan of it. While you want the focus on the court, it separates the crowd from the court and I've noticed the crowds have gotten quieter since they changed the lighting.

Don't the knicks use it to, I watched when the lakers beat the knicks when kobe scored 61 and the lighting was similar to staples, the crowd is darkened and all the lights are on the court.

Something nostalgic behind Lakers' use of CQL, they intentionally used that so that most Lakers fans would still remember the Forum days, which is dark.
This was actually used during Kobe's first year of using #24 and his worst playoff season, 2006-07.

buytheredcar August 25th, 2009, 04:13 AM Only thing I dont like about Staples is the wide football stadium like Sections

I like the 3 level suites. might not be good for the fans on the top deck but looks good on TV.
Jim856796 January 1st, 2010, 06:10 AM What could be a perfect non-sponsor name for the Staples Center? Sure, I like the Staples Center name and I'm not against it, but due to my opposition towards naming rights held by companies who like to sell out, if an arena has a sponsor name, it must have a non-sponsored name. So Sommet Center-Nashville Arena, Honda Center-Anaheim Arena, and TD Garden-Boston Garden II.

ryebreadraz September 24th, 2010, 12:45 PM Staples Center gets a much needed new scoreboard. Click the link for pictures (http://blogdowntown.com/2010/09/5693-staples-center-unveils-new-hd-scoreboard).
When Kings fans enter Staples Center tonight for their pre-season game against the Phoenix Coyotes, the first thing they'll notice is a brand new, eight-sided high-definition scoreboard that even includes underside LED screens for those with premium seats to keep up on the action.
At Wednesday's unveiling, the Lakers' Sasha Vujacic, the Clippers' Craig Smith, and the Kings' Matt Greene were on hand to press the Staples "easy button," activating a presentation on the panoramic displays in broadcast quality 720p HD.
Lee Zeidman, General Manager of Staples Center, said that in 1999 the previous scoreboard was state of the art, but in 12 years it had become outdated. He boasted that the new screen is "the best you'll see in any venue in any arena anywhere."
The scoreboard is made of four 22' x 14' HD screens with 720p displays, a number of smaller boards in the corner gaps, two LED "halos" circling the top and bottom of the screens, and the four underside screens — an extra perk for anyone with seats alongside Jack Nicholson.
"These boards underneath will allow the fans who are close to the rink or court to see replays, scoring, and things they havent seen before," Zeidman explained.
Panasonic, which became a partner with the L.A. Live complex in 2009, custom designed the scoreboard for Staples Center.
Due to the arena's busy schedule, preliminary construction began at the Convention Center next door. Installation shifted to the arena immediately after the Sparks' WNBA season ended, giving the venue a tight 50-day schedule in order to have it ready for tonight's NHL pre-season game.
While Panasonic and AEG looked at arena screens around the world for ideas on the board's features, they then had to make them work within the confines of the arena. Because the existing hoist system was being reused, the scoreboard's weight couldn't change, and the final design needed to fit into the existing nesting position so that the board could be tucked away for concerts.
Still, Zeidman doesn't think that led to any compromises.
"I don't think there's any other place on the planet that has this," he said. "Fan excitement is gonna be amazing."

LosAngelesSportsFan February 12th, 2011, 07:23 AM You mean a quiet, lazy, late arriving crowd?
this is so funny to me. Laker crowds are not late arriving. the place is packed before the game starts. also, i dont know how a crowd can be lazy. lastly, the crowd knows when to cheer and when not to. Laker fans demand championships, were not gonna cheer to loudly when were beating the bucks on a tuesday night in january.
the only late arriving fans in LA are Dodger fans, and the only reason is the hell that it is to get into that place. 4 entrances and minimal public transit, equals a traffic nightmare and yet, the Dodgers are always, always top 3 in attendance.

It really does matter when or why. The why is more in kind to the fact that AEG owns/operates Staples Center and also owns the LA Kings. The Kings are the facility's "primary tenant" and black is their primary color.

Seating capacities vary for every STAPLES Center event. For basketball, the capacity is 19,079; for hockey it is 18,118. For concerts and other special events, the capacity nears 20,000 guests, depending on the set-up of the event.

Lakers have scheduling priority. AEG owned the Kings in '99 when the arena opened so if they wanted to match the Kings, they could have done it then and the Kings have purple as one of their colors anyways. They just wanted a different look that was more neutral for all of the events they have there.

Its just not right. that might have been the original capacity, but its never been the official capacity for the Lakers or the Clippers. The Lakers is at 18,997 and the Clippers at 18,964. the reason for the difference is that the Lakers have 33 more courtside seats.

LosAngelesSportsFan February 14th, 2011, 09:17 AM Maybe its for College or other Basketball matches?
possible. ill try to find some numbers from the pacific 10 tournament.

the Clippers actual capacity is 18,964, but they sell standing room tickets to some games (Lakers, Miami, Boston.) The Lakers however, never sell standing room tickets. i have no idea why.

The lakers should try and squeeze in 508 more seats somewhere as a nod to their old capacity at the Fabulous Forum. :)

Hmmmm? Staples Center already holds more than the Forum ever did.
LosAngelesSportsFan February 15th, 2011, 01:01 AM so it would be 19505, similar to the 17505 at the forum

Exactly. Heck, they could just add a mere 8 seats and it would be reminiscent of the Kings old Forum capacity.
Just one of the weird things I think about sometimes.

Oh. I could see the appeal of keeping the exact same number, but when you're 2,000 off I think the ship has sailed.
1772 November 14th, 2011, 09:32 PM Does Staples Center have permanent merchandise shops for the Lakers and the Kings?
If so, are these always open when the arena is open or only during games (Lakers Store open on Lakers Game Day etc.)

Ah, it's a mixed store then?
LosAngelesSportsFan November 14th, 2011, 11:47 PM yes. there is more stuff on game day for that particular team thats playing, but usually all tenants are represented, but not equally. (Lakers get most space, Kings next, Clippers, then Sparks, with about 1 item lol)

When I was at a LA Kings vs Denver NHL game back in 2007, the giant team store seemed to have more Lakers gear than Kings gear.......
I got into a verbal spat with a Atlantic division rival wearing a Penguins jersey. The LA fans found it amusing. A Rangers and a Penguins fan get into a fight at a hockey game in LA. lol
