I reacon that we are knocking down To many 1970/60s Buidings because
one day they might be :eek2: nice and Historical :eek2: and Liverpool wont have buildings From that period. Can anyone help me with how many 1970s-1960 buildings there are Left.

Jeez, there seem to be a lot of new users joining us lately- Hi Liverodysea. I'm not sure about how many 60/70s builings there are. I quite like them myself. Here's a piccy of the courts-

Some of the recent demolitions, I think, have been well justified, e.g. on Old Hall St and on the current development of Unity. After all, some of the 60s/70s stuff is abysmal. Some of them have been kept and re-clad, e.g. the JM Building. (look on the St Pauls Sq Thread)

I don't think that is a nice 70s building, it's cheap and nasty, and should be replaced as soon as possible. I like a lot of 60s and 70s architecture, but the Liverpool Crown Court building is abominable. I really hate it. I've been in it (innocently) and its internal design is a disgrace. It's crap.

I think it will be a very long time before we lose all our 60s and 70s buildings and they will have become historic buildings to be preserved long before that. Not that long ago, anything Victorian was considered ripe for demolition but nowadays they can't be touched.

If you think of the Liverpool skyline, many of our tallest buildings are from the era:

The Metropolitan Cathedral
Royal Sun Alliance Building
The Metro Tower
The Bruntwood Tower (formally the Littlewood JM Centre)
St Johns Beacon
Silkhouse Court
Concourse House

of those, only the last is being considered for demolition but obviously, many of the residential towers from that era have now gone, although I would expect most of those left to be with us for a long time yet.

is gone Now for the paradise project.

Ive Just been to Barcelona and LJLA is Great. We should build a new Cathedral like the Sagreda Familia insted of the Wigwam. So the one in Barcelona isnt only the only Cathedral getting built in the World

I went to Barcelona last year LiverOdysea. Fascinating city. It did make me wish that they had pressed on with plans for the Lutyens metropolitan cathedral, which was started in the 30s and abandoned during the war. I remember that it would have taken over two hundred years to build but would probably be the largest cathedral in the world.

I think that St John the Divine in New York City is still under construction using a team that worked on Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.

Going back to the topic, of the 60s and 70s buildings that we have in Liverpool, I think that the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Playhouse extensions in Williamson Square, the university Senate House, the Thistle Hotel are decent examples of the architecture of the period.

Paddy's WigWam is the best concrete structure in the country IMO- better than the Brasilia cathedral it was inspired by.

In terms of 60's and 70's buildings i quite like that JMU tower on Norton Street, formerly the Liverpool headquarters of Midland Bank i think. It would be good to develop a little cluster of 10-20 storey towers in and aroud that area??

Its good to keep some 60's and 70's buildings for the benefit of future generations, though unfortunately most 60's and 70's buildings were quite bad.

So will we end up with Load of outa date Buildings in the Future

Liverpool University do have a lot of 60/70s buildings, two more examples being the University sports centre Mount Pleasant, slope fronted building with new extension, and up the road Senate hosuse, Abercromby Square, the Uni were given permission to demolish that side of the Georgian Square and a church to build what looks like a bad 60s interpretation of a georgian terrace. :bash:

Most of our stuff from that period is not that bad compared to the likes of Birmingham and others.

As a point of interest the original proposals for the Cathedral of christ the king (paddy's wigwam) was to make it the largest cathedral in the world bar none, all the land around it was to be used as part of the cathedral (now science park) except after the WWII it was deemed inappropriate to spend all this money on a building when there were so many hungry and homeless people in the world.
