Really? So there is a fountain in Boston identical to the Steble on Wm Brown Street? What is the name of the Bostonian copy? I'm in Beantown next week, so I'll look out for it. Might even take a photo of it and post it on the forum if I can find it.

Just googled it. Brewer Fountain, in front of the State House. I've been to that spot, but paid no attention to the fountain. This time I will and, I hope, take a photo of it.

You were beginning to worry me with that Ebay stuff. I thought you were labouring the point a little. Everything is in the Control Panel which is fairly easy to get around. Get yourself an avatar while you're at it.

More fountains than you can shake a stick at in Liverpool

Yeah, but look at the state of most of them. They've been neglected. In West Derby, the village fountain has never worked as far as I can remember. The lantern hasn't either so we're looking at two decades minimum of neglect. The one at the entrance to Sefton Park (the entrance where you can cross over and access Princess Park - I think) used to work when I was a kid but was in poor kip when I last took a look at it. We should have more. More I say!

Not sure whether it's neglect or pragmatism. I mean, what's the point in the Council refurbishing them when we all know some f*****g scrote(s) will come along and vandalise them?

That's what I've always thought.

It must be cheaper to employ a park warden then waste thousand's of pounds repairing vandalised monuments, fountains and other park property.

I say stone 'em. The vandals that is, not the park wardens.

Steblesque?

http://i1.trekearth.com/photos/3577/steble_fountain.jpg

The Boston one has a another level of statueque supporters above the lower four. Very similar design. Though. Aren't all of the four statues at the base of the Liverpool fountain female? I'm sure at least one of the four Boston ones had a beard.

I've now posted a piccie of the Steble for comparison. Boston was OK. Work mostly. Just about got used to the timezone before I had to come back.

Stayed in Boston's regenerating waterfront. There's still a way to go there, btw. A lot of the area was as empty as the central docks in Liverpool, although covered in surfact car parking.

As Awayo wrote, similar design apart from another level. And all the Steble base statues are female.

Ta Dave. Great pics. I've just found out from a google search that the statues at the base of the Brewer fountain are Poseidon and his wife Amphitrite, Acis and his bird Galatea.

So two geezers, two birds and the bearded chap must have been Neptune.

I must have got it wrong about the Steble. I reckon the figure that we are looking straight at in the first pick is the youth Acis, glancing lovingly at Galatea (the chick in your second photo). He looks like he's got a bit of a sixpack.

[EDIT] just looked at your site, Dave. This one is showing the bearded Neptune on the right.

http://www.**************************/steblefountain/images/image001.jpg

So both statues have the same classical figures represented at their bases. This is confirmed by my copy of the Liverpool Pevsner that states that the statue is by Paul Lienard with other versions at Boston, Geneva, Launceston (Tas.), and elsewhere. It seems as if the design is not identical at every location, however. http://www.liverpoolworldheritage.com states that castings of the original statue exist also in Lyon and Bordeaux. The original was produced for the Paris exhibition in 1867 and this statue was the one shifted to Boston. Liverpool's copy looks a little more modest than the Parisian/Bostonian origian.

Here is Launceton, Tasmania's version. It looks more like the Brewer than the Steble in form. Apparently the locals were scandalised by the nymph at the top of the fountain, that was replaced with a pineapple!

One fairly unique fountain that we have in Liverpool is the bucket fountain in Williamson Square at the rear of Beetham Plaza. It is a very original idea but I've always thought it was in the wrong location, surrounded by offices and apartments.

The fountain was installed in the late 60s and consists of banana shape metal buckets on hollow poles. The buckets fill with water through the poles and when full overbalance and spill into the pool below. Some buckets are very large and cause quite a considerable splash when they finally go.

You can have hours of fun predicting which is the next one to go but the problem is that the fountain hardly ever seems to be working. I think it should be relocated to a more popular location (e.g. a second fountain for Williamson Square) and given more frequent maintenance.

Sorry about that, I hope its not the onset of Alzheimers. To be honest I don't know what that square is called but the fountain is off Drury Lane, just by the Corn Exchange.

Thanks for the photo Paul, it's a great sight when it's working.

Delighted to find the bucket fountain in full working order today. I was a bit concerned that it might not make it after taking the scaffolding pics back in August, but it looks great.
Liverpool should have more fountains, lots' of 'em.

That fountain must be about 40 years old. Great idea but I have never been convinced by its location. Put it in the centre of that new public square at the end of Paradise Street with all the shoppers going past. We can always shift it when the tram gets the go-ahead.
