Liverpool wants MBT plant built in the city
(05.04.05)
Liverpool city council is confident that a mechanical biological treatment plant planned by the MWDA will be put up in the city.
The Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA) is one of the preferred bidders for a Department of Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) new technologies fund. In a joint bid with Lancashire based Fairport Group the authority was selected in stage one of the scheme.
"The Gilmoss site would be the perfect place for an MBT plant - Alan Smith, Liverpool"
If successful the MWDA will be building a 40,000 tonne plant which will serve Liverpool, Sefton and Knowsley councils.
And, Liverpool council has said that it wants the plant to be placed at the Gilmoss waste transfer station in Liverpool.
Alan Smith, waste strategy manager for Liverpool city council, said: "We think that Gilmoss would be the perfect place for the plant. We are aiming to increase the recycling and waste infrastructure in Liverpool and we are confident that the plant will be built here."
The Merseyside waste disposal authority has said that it shares Liverpool council's views and is hopeful that it will find out in the near future whether it has received the funding for the plant. But, the disposal authority said that if it was successful it would be looking across the whole of Merseyside for a site for the plant, not just Liverpool.
The first round of bidding for the new technologies fund ran between March and May of last year and a total of seven companies were taken through to the preferred bidder stage.

A spokeswoman said that Defra was still in negotiations with a few of the preferred bidders and as all of them were yet to be finalised an announcement would now be delayed until after the election. "Although we cannot make an announcement now talks with all of the bidders are at an advanced stage," she said.
