I was going to put this in the thread about "whats on TV now" but I thought the issue it raised was too important.
Basically the programme interviewed torturers from the last forty years, from Americans, Israelis and South Africans.
I only saw the second half of the programme and it was truly scary. The South African police make the Zimbabwean cops looks like angels. In Zimbabwe you will get a good kicking in a police station and you have to be high up the political food chain to be murdered in a police station (although most political murders are committed in peoples homes and will be done by agents of the CIO the secret police).
Anyway the South African Police had a system of torture. It was the cold calculated system of torture that was so frightening.
One system they used was to put a taped up gas mask over someone's head, so there was no air on it, and then just fire questions at them (the suspect would be tied down) and when his lungs were bursting take the mask of) The suspect was then told he would be given two more goes of the mask and if he didn't answer their questions the mask would not be taken off on the third go. Then with a smile the South African Policeman (now ex) said they never went for a third time - they always talked.
There were loads more examples of torture which they used, including beatings with hose pipes (they don't leave bruises) but what truly scared me was that all of the Policemen said that after a while they began to enjoy it and went to work with a smile, although it ruined their personal life's "as torture is better than sex" - it really is a frightening world (as this was all in the last thirty to forty years).
