Very interesting site that Juxtapol. I think that rooftop with the 'picket fence' around it just contains plant and equipment for the building heating and air conditioning. Modern plant is likely to be more compact so much less room should be required. Imaging having a restaurant open to the public at that level - a fantastic view over the city and the Bay beyond.

In El corte Ingles- Department store- ( The Style of the English ) in Barcelona it has one of 3 restuarts on the Top floor around 12 stories up

I am not a fan of re-cladding, it often looks worse than the original within 10 years, but the Littlewoods Building (sorry JM Centre, or whatever its even newer name is) really needs it. I've always hated the look of that buiding, and I can't say I noticed any huge improvement in its appearance from a distance on my last visit. Messing around with the ground floor and roof might just make it even worse, less coherant, and fail to address a bigger problem - it is ugly.

Out of interest, any ideas what types of business / organisation are going to take the vacated Littlewoods space? It looks like quite a big building, so even cut into units, presumably needs tenants who need quite a lot of space.

Rooftop garden with resteraunt, and pub, lying on the grass in summer, listening to the rolling of tram's and the hooters of large cruise liners on the Mersey, and the sound of Paul McCartney singing to a crowd of 50,000 at King's Dock, while thousands of shoppers and tourists enjoy the hustle and bustle of city centre Liverpool.

Its true!!

The building has been Bruntwoodised!!. It has not had a re-clad it has simply had the panels painted black!! I have seen them at it a number of months ago - blokes with paint brushes and rollers!

Next atep in traditional Bruntwood fashion is a 'bolt on' glass box or similar. It seems to be the Bruntwood way.

This building offers MASSIVE floorplates. Littlewoods HQ must of been a massive requirement at the time in the 60's - if they had decided on a tower instead of what we have now it could of probably been on the scale of the CIS tower in Manchester I reckon.
