Mo Rush January 29th, 2010, 09:27 AM Ah Newlands: there is no better venue anywhere in the world for a lazy afternoon in the sun. Gotta love it.
BTW I hope now that you are moving down to the Cape you will ditch the bloody Sharks and start supporting the Stormers and WP in the rugby?!! :-)
The new Cape Town stadium for some reason has the exact same feel, with its white/grey seats and sun shining into the stadium.
Mark Schonrock February 8th, 2010, 04:52 PM Hey guys,
Firstly - Wow what a great site - the forum content is SO interesting, I look forward to many hours of intesting posts with you all! Also some of the members seem to be super-up-todate with the current affairs of Cape Town and South Africa, especially Mo Rush; I look forward to having some entertaining discussions....
Anyway, enough about that, about me....
I'm a 28 year old male, originally from Zimbabwe but moved to Cape Town about 10 years ago to persure a career in South Africa's large-scale Construction.
Over the Past 6 years I have been involved in the Mandela Rhodes Development in the City Centre and then our good old Green Point Stadium for the past 3 years which was a great experience! :-)
Pule February 8th, 2010, 04:54 PM Welcome Mark, hope you gonna enjoy your stay and we looking forward to your contribution.

Tis the only way to keep numbers up :) I get most of my hits from skyscrapercity, so put it in your signature. Also, comment on other blogs, especially those that get a lot of visitors. It's all about networking really.

Urban Rambler February 20th, 2010, 04:22 PM Hello. I’m Brent. I’m 25, from Cape Town – was born in Wynberg and grew up in Muizenberg. I have lived in London as well. Been lurking on this forum for some time and have found it to be massively informative. My main interest currently is BRT and public transport, as well urban planning in general (for some reason I have an obsession with public squares, with Greenmarket Square being my favourite in Cape Town). I work in Town and commute most days by train.
Lydon February 20th, 2010, 06:31 PM Welcome! :) Glad to see another Capetonian around these parts.

signol May 6th, 2010, 02:10 AM Hi, I'm signol, British, and live in Norwich, UK. I work in IT support.
My wife, however, is from Pinetown KZN, so we make regular trips down to SA to visit her parents, family and friends. I've been reading the SA forums for a while, but make only rare posts - for SA stuff, I guess I'm learning all about it :) Looking forward to using the new DUR airport on our next visit in September!

Firstly, I'm completely disillusioned with America. I simply do not like it here. Beyond that, I'm completely compelled by South Africa. In every crevice of its history and its present, it is interesting and brutally real compared to plastic America. I just have the feeling that South Africa is calling and I'm more than ready to answer. (I've felt this way long before the World Cup, by the way.)
Project Director June 15th, 2010, 09:31 PM welcome what you gonna study there...

As Lydon as pointed out, I'm 17. My background? Middle class from West Virginia, though I've lived in Charleston, SC so I'm not totally robbed of perspective between little town America and big city America. My main grievance in both Americas, and America overall the lack of ...something. I've tried to put my finger on it, and I think I've pinpointed it. There is just a lack of motion, a lack of something big happening. In my opinion, the US has hit a disillusioning plateau and decline at the very core of its heart. My generation will lead a less successful life than the one of my parents, and no one around me seems to care. Politics and condition of life around us don't really seem to matter. Don't get me wrong though, I don't begrudge my homeland. I'm very grateful for education I've received, the wealth I've been given, the opportunities presented to me. At the same time, I think it'd be a shame to waste those things, which in my opinion, is what I'd be doing if I didn't go to South Africa (Cape Town more specifically, to please Lydon :P). South Africa is a country that has always lived in turbulence. From the Boers Wars, to the Apartheid-era, to present times. The scars of long and rocky history are slowly healing, but there's still an unbelievably large amount of work do to to achieve the ultimate dream of land, liberty, and peace for all. It is a national goal, the achievement of which is happening (albeit slowly). That is something I want to be apart of.
JoHaN 15 June 18th, 2010, 11:21 AM So you want to work
That's the right mentality but sadly I want a healed South Africa handed to me on a plate :(
Lydon June 18th, 2010, 11:27 AM A healed South Africa would be boring. I mean, if it weren't for the World Cup, could you imagine how boring life would be without Juju's Media Moans? (TM)

The 5th Horseman September 28th, 2010, 10:32 PM Right here goes. I've been visiting this site for as long as I can remeber (5 years?) and you guys deserve a lot of credit for the updates on development in SA. Without any doubt you've made the SA forums on SSC the best site for this. I'm an expat myself, born and bred on the dreaded (but actually fun to be) East Rand, currently splitting my time between the UK and Aus, with short visits to South Africa in between. I'm currently on long leave in SA so finally have some time to contribute here. I'm always amazed at how things in SA are changing (good and bad, but mainly good!) and my biggest interest lies in town planning etc. Hope we'll have some good debates!

Jussim6 October 9th, 2010, 01:27 PM Hi guys. Well, like Horseman, I have also been visiting this site regularly since about 2004. I remember it cos it was when all the Gautrain hype began as the project kicked into action mode. I stumbled upon SSC and hey presto! Been observing ever since. It's great to read all the news on projects and development taking place across SA.
I was born and bred in Port Elizabeth (27 years ago) but have been living in Johannesburg for three years. I practise as an attorney in Sandton.
Keep 'em posts comin'.
Lydon October 9th, 2010, 01:53 PM Welcome :) Glad to see the observers joining.
Nostra November 1st, 2010, 10:40 AM hi Guys, I commited the crime of posting in the general forum before I intro'ed myself properly. I'm a 25 year old man, studied economics in Cape Town and I'm now based in Jozi, trying to get that paper of course.
My interests are history (especially history of industrialisation), engineering of all kind, the future (tech, smart cities, etc) and last but not least the dream that SA will become the a first-world country in my lifetime. Hence I love this site because it deals with these issues squarely. Cheers
Lydon November 1st, 2010, 03:15 PM Welcome :)
TheMann2000 November 3rd, 2010, 10:16 AM Hey guys.
I'm Adrian, 36 years old, born and raised in Toronto, Canada, back in Canada about three years after spending 15 years in the United States (10 years in Seattle, four in Los Angeles), excepting a seven-month stay in South Africa (most of it in Pretoria and Johannesburg) working for a firm that consulted to Eskom in 1997-98.
Aside from my stay in SA, my father was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia and lived there until 1963, when he left to go to school at Wits in Johannesburg. He met Mom when she was a tourist to SA in Durban six years later. He and mom married and moved to Canada in 1971, when my dad took on a job at Canadian Pacific Railway, which he retired from last year. Having seen so much of South Africa during my time there, I do hope that it succeeds. I think it can, especially considering that South Africa, for all its problems, has already cleared the first massive hurdle, not being stuck in the past in terms of race - morons like Julius Malema notwithstanding, of course. ;)
Pule November 3rd, 2010, 01:06 PM Welcome Nostra and Adrian.

Eduan June 5th, 2011, 03:53 PM Hi everyone. I'm based in Cape Town (northern suburbs), early thirties, working as a lawyer, also part time economics student.
I've been following developments in Cape Town, especially transport-wise, on SSC since about the World Cup. The opening of the Myciti bus service (at long last) has inspired me to become a bit more active.
Lydon June 5th, 2011, 04:12 PM Welcome :) Hope to see you actively posting!

Sorry for the late reply, I messed up my key board and only managed to fix it today. I had to use the on-screen keyboard for other shorter posts but I thought I would give you a detailed reply and so I waited for the key-board to be fixed.
Anyway the country I had in mind was Swaziland to move to Adam. The reason for me believing the quality of life was better then what I could get in the UK were things like tax. If I pick up a job that brings in the same revenue that my dad get's when I have kids (Around middle class), I will end up paying 40% on tax, pretty much no state benefits (including for child), work all hours for little return, crappy pensions even if I were to go to the public sector and a few other monetary things. In Swaziland tax is far lower, no benefits but there are reforms coming in (I suspect that they are on hold untill the financial crisis wears off).
In terms of the countrys natural features, I like the UK's weather. Nice beutiful hot days and I love the rain. The snow is a lovely treat (no work) and Britain has some of the most beautiful scenery. I don't know whether you have ever heard of the national trust in the UK? It preserves huge swathes of forest and historical buildings and addmission is pretty cheap. But after a while you get used to it and you have to be fairly well-off to benefit from these features. In Swaziland, the most beutiful sunsets combined with lovely open stretches of road for a good ride with the motor-bike (can't get away with that on British speed camera ridden motorways). It's a mountanious region which adds to it's exceptional beauty. In the UK we have the downs to compare in my region. I also like how it's a small country.
Security wise it falls down for example crime and rape (at one point having the highest rate of murders in the world). Robbery is still pretty big and the police don't believe in competance. Soldiers are widely used in enforcing certain policys like border patrol and nature reserve protection. They have been known to be a little trigger-happy. Hospitals are not of S.African standards and it's mostly made up of clinics. But there's no NHS so I don't have to pay as much tax. Also securities in the UK have taken away a lot of quality. The UK has tight laws which are there to protect me but it's very restrictive, try being a teacher for example...
Things like jobs are pretty scarce in the Kingdom but I hope to come with the right education, attitude and expieriance to the country so that I have jobs lined up for me. In terms of the on-going HIV epidemic (Highest rate in the world leading to lowest life-expectancy) then yeah that's a worry, I'll just have to remember to put something on the end of it and not go around after every hook-benzer.
The community seems great. Obviously it's hard to tell from the other side of the world so I won't really comment on that. However I hear they are big into football, that's my country. I am fed up of watching England anyway  :bash: :)
I might be able to think of some other things but for the time being that's just off the top of my head. I see my dad coming home every night exhausted and then doing everything he can to help us in his "free time". That's something I admire and fear. I know lifes not easy and work needs to be done but I want to do whatever I can to avoid that life. So I want to at least go out and explore the world.
This plan might seem crazy but just to sway you guys, my parents will be on the other side of the world
musiccity June 20th, 2011, 07:46 PM I don't think thats crazy at all, the hard part as you said is finding a job which is probably easiest to find in the health sector.
I know a few things about Swaziland (that you probably know too). Swaziland has two small cities, Mbabane and Manzini. Mbabane is perched on a mountain and the climate is more temperate. Its also the main capital of Swaziland and it is a peaceful and easy going city. Swaziland's largest city is Manzini which is situated lower in elevation and is more tropical. Theres more things to do in Manzini as opposed to Mbabane but the crime rate is much higher.
Where do you think you might end up living?

 Thankyou.
Didn't know that thanks. I was hopeing to get in the Mbabane area. Pick up a full time job in somewhere like the stock market or some other financial area. Then take some jobs on the side if that doesn't take up enough work hours or pay. I might live in some place like Matsapha in-between the two cities. The benefits of living in a country the size of Wales. If things didn't work out I would find whatever work there is like transport and if that wasn't enough then I would bank my luck on S.Africa which would no doubt have far more financial jobs open to me and try and live my dreams there.
Where are hopeing to set off to music? Your in the US right now?
EDIT: thanksfor the tip on heath but I haven't signed up for anything to do with health for my A-Lvls
GetDownAdam June 20th, 2011, 11:13 PM I had a smile on my face while reading that post. I think as a young person who doesn't necessarily need to worry about healthcare costs and public services, you're spot on. However, it's likely that you'll find yourself heavily taxed if you move to Swaziland especially considering their current financial standing. Death and taxes my friend :ohno: Did you mean you don't get state benefits in the UK? I'd have to disagree there. I even get benefits from the UK and I don't even live there!
I find it interesting that Brits generally don't like the NHS when in fact it's easily one of the best models of healthcare in the world. It doesn't work well all the time, but believe me, it works way better than most other countries and the extra taxation is well worth it.
Having driven on Swaziland's roads, they're not exactly the kind of roads where speeding is a problem. They're pretty damn mountainous and windy. In my opinion, Swaziland wins hands down in terms of weather, and Africans in general are a much happier bunch of people.
Swaziland wins in weather too. I was living in Newcastle in January 2010. I can't stand snow... and I didn't get to miss any classes.

I don't mean that there are no benefits but once you start building a family and get a middle class job, you end up with little state support and even more tax. I think with decent skills and qualifications I could reduce my tax in SD because I wouldn't have to pay for the unemployed, other peoples children and other social welfare benefits.
I haven't seen that much of an emphsis on tax hikes from the swazi government. The IMF has generally made large public sector reduction in terms of the size and wage reduction and They are getting tougher on tax evasion aswell. The government appears to have tried to keep tax low to bring in invesment and skilled migrants and keep the ones that they have now being produced in their uni's.
As for the NHS, it's alright but I as a young generally fit person, I don't want to use up money which I would try and invest in starting up a business in the UK.
Weather wise I thnk that its a matter of taste but yeah I agree that Swaziland appears to have fantastic weather. You were unlucky with the snow. I lost a few days in Feb that year
Thanks for the advice though and thoughts. Hopefully by the time I attain independance and achieved a satisfactory expieriance of the world, then I will have a more thoughtful asspiration
joburg2011 July 1st, 2011, 10:28 PM Hello. By way of introduction I have been living overseas for the last few years and am coming back to Joburg in September. I love Joburg and have realized I cannot be happy anywhere else but SA. Obv have a few concerns but I hope the good will outweigh the bad :-)
musiccity July 1st, 2011, 10:34 PM Welcome to the South African forum Joburg2011!
rubbercenter July 24th, 2011, 03:26 PM Hello from the Sandpit, better known as the UAE...been posting randomly but thought I'd drop in and introduce myself...
South African born architect and been living in the UAE for the last 3 years to see what all the fuss is about and (try) to make some extra moola...hope to "see" everyone a bit more often...
o-ja...missing SA like crazy and hoping to return soon to help build "us" up to what I know we can achieve...

Diggerdog July 27th, 2011, 09:32 AM Welcome Rubbercentre - I am back after 4 years London, 5 years Oz - loving it back here, things are moving, Cape Town ROCKS!
ToxicBunny July 27th, 2011, 11:17 AM Always good to have you guys realise where home is :) and finally return as well...
rubbercenter August 2nd, 2011, 08:14 AM Thanks for the welcome guys...
@toxicbunny...I think there are many Saffers working overseas (like myself) purely for the experience. I find it amazing how many South Africans automatically think that because you're working overseas it must mean that you're looking at emigrating and this is not the case...
will see you guys around...
ToxicBunny August 2nd, 2011, 09:34 AM rubbercenter... I'm fully aware of the realities, I'm just jerking a few ppls chains purely because I can :)
Ppl working overseas for experience, and then coming back to SA is immeasurably good for our economy so I (and I'm sure pretty much everyone) will always welcome them back with open arms... Hell even people who have chosen to emigrate for suspect reasons are always welcome back here, since we know we live in the best place around :)
rubbercenter August 2nd, 2011, 09:44 AM Chain jerking is always fun...:-)...
and I agree with you...SA's the best by far...
Durbsboi August 3rd, 2011, 03:45 PM welcome guys, help yourself to the free drinks
GetDownAdam August 3rd, 2011, 06:30 PM Shit. I missed the free drinks again.

GoodHope October 26th, 2011, 12:34 PM Hi All
I'm a Cape Town based pastor interested in how faith and urban development can integrate and or inform each other. Been reading many of the posts here for a few years now but only recently decided to sign up to the forum. I'm not sure I have all that much to offer because I feel I'm still learning a ton - but we'll see how it goes.
Lydon October 26th, 2011, 12:42 PM Welcome! The more the merrier.
Mitch82 February 2nd, 2012, 04:00 PM Hey all,
Newbie here. I'm a tourism student currently living in Amsterdam and I've been following these forums for the last few years to keep me informed of current developments in SA. It's a great source of info - thanks guys!
Anyways, my residence permit expires end of August (hopefully by then I'll have my degree) and then I'll be returning to SA to start a 'new' life in CPT.
Not sure if I'll be contributing much but just thought I'd introduce myself.
