I'm Pule, working for an IT company in Rivonia. I have moved to Joburg's Roodepoort about 4 months ago and I love every bit of it. I've just turned 29. I'm interested in developments acrros the country and would like to see SA being on top of the days.

I'm Wiaan, 27 and working for English Heritage (Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England) in London. I am from Cape Town (and can't picture myself living anywhere but there), but also have soft spots for Port Elizabeth, East London and Bloemfontein. I am returning to Cape Town in December, after almost 2 years in the UK.

A couple of years ago I joined emporis.com and, together with Giles (SA Boy) managed to get some of the SA cities some better representation on the Skyscraper database, although I was obviously never as comprehensive and thorough as Giles! I think we should all applaud him for doing so much of the groundlaying work to give our beautiful and extraordinary cities the sort of treatment they deserve!

Wiaan you shouldent have. Anyways Wiaan has done a wonderful job on PE and especially CT as when we started there were only 20 odd buildings listed in CT.
I cant belive you are going back in 8 months , seems like yesterday you left. Im sure you will find a better, CT than when you left.
Good to have you back here again as its been a long time since you were here

On the contrary.... I ain't hard to find at all! O, the times I had in dear old Western Road, Port Elizabeth Central. The nights I danced away in Club Rich's as an 18 year old debutant! And then having to walk up that steep hill after a night's clubbing. The karaoke nights at Cagneys. Sipping cocktails at La Med in Parliament Street. Buying booze at Top Up Liquor, in those days the only bottle store in PE to be open till 20:00!

And Bloemfontein... liewe jirre.

Hi everyone, I am a 31yr old software architect from Durban.

Ive spent a couple of years living downunder in Melbourne, but will be departing these shores on July 29th for London where I have previously lived for 3.5 years.

I like big, busy cities, international travel and - obviously - skyscrapers. Will be spending 3 days in KL on journey to London so will be checking out the Petronas towers which must be freaking big considering they are >100m bigger than Melbourne's new and enormous Eureka tower! I'll probably save Dubai and Hong Kong until they finish the Burj and Union Square respectively. Hurry up!

Hey guys sorry I have been over in London helping a friend of mine win Putney back for the Tories in the general election and didnt have time to check the internet. As you can probably tell from that I am English but live in Camps Bay in Cape Town. I work for a New York Law Firm facilitating investment from both the US and UK into South Africa. Before I moved to SA I lived in New York. I love South Africa and think Cape Town is an awsome city (I also love Joburg as well). The future is certainly bright for SA and my one gripe is people who cannot accept that fact and only look at the negatives.

Hi, I'm 31 years old and live in Hillcrest in the outer west part of Durban. I run my own company and am involved in the tourism industry. I've got a passion for aviation and can't wait for Durban's new airport to be completed (and it's been a very long wait so far!). Have spent some time working in the Middle East and UK and have travelled extensively. There's many other countries that I love and appreciate but I'm always happy to come back to exciting South Africa. Favourite place is the Drakensberg - wow Africa is beautiful!!

Bath is my favourite city in the UK, although it is a bit Isolated. The West Country is just extremely slow to travel round - Driving from Bath to Bristol takes ages, for instance!! I love the architecture in Bath, although to my mind Liverpool is the architectural gem of England.

I recently learned that south africa is a devoloping country within a developed country.
That the white population which is 15% and the black population is 85%. The whites have 99% literacy rate, life span of 70 yrs, high per capita, but the blacks which are 85% are one of the ten most poorest people in africa. Life spane of average 50yrs, very poor, live in townships and ghettos.....etc.
IS THIS STILL TRUE IN SA EVEN AFTER APARTHEID!

Cape Town Guy
October 20th, 2005, 06:14 AM
well its getting better. but it takes time to turn your life around. if you had NOTHING, a small shack, barely any food, no job, and then apartheid was over, you are still going to be living in that shack for a while.

But its all improving, and the government are helping by building houses etc.

I think I am creative :) I do all sort of wonderful things with my hands... LOL.
I love architecture, but my maths suck; was no way I could study to become an architect! I also love urban design; basically everything that has to do with cities.

SA Blacks are, on average, far richer than the african average and have been long before apartheid ended - that statement is total crap. There are probably only 2 or 3 countries in 'black' africa that have richer black people, and they are both tiny mineral-rich countries - EqGuinea and Botswana.

Lifespan is low but that is entirely because of AIDS which has reduced their lifespan from over 60 in the 80s.

In reply to your earlier question I am not from South Africa but an American but I am South African at heart and I identify with the country and what it has going for it. I have published several works on tourism in SA about 8 years ago and I continue to closely watch developments in SA tourism, property and the economy and politics as well. I have known many South Africans and they are great folks.

What are some accurate demographics, because Stats SA is a little screwed up. I e-mailed them about the footnotes on their site :

· an underestimate of children under the age of five
· an overestimate of children aged between 10 and 19
· an underestimate of men relative to women
· an underestimate of the white population

The response I recieved was that they had not been able to count whites that lived on farms or private communities (note that they didn't respond about the other three problems I addressed). The statistics on CIA WorldFactbook went from Black (75.2%), White (13.6%), Coloured (8.8%), Asian (2.4%) in 2004, to Black (79%), White (9.6%), Coloured (8.8%), Asian (2.6%) in 2005. How could it change so rapidly, and I'm still curious why there isand underestimate of men to women, children under five, and 10-19.

Basically, what I'm saying is what are some more accurate demographics.

Alright, my name is Joe, I'm 26, and I was born in Durban, my mother is South African, my father is American. At about the age of 2 my father moved us back to his home(Bethesda, maryland, just outside of D.C.) in the US. I work for an architecture firm in Baltimore now. I recieved my degrees from the University of Maryland's architecture school, largely considered the best in the US (I almost went to Wits). I am a proud to be a South African and an American. It looks like a lot is going on in South Africa now, which is fantastic!!!

Hi All
Well, I am Moby, from Port Elizabethian born and bred, just in case you did'nt catch my signature :) , married, 5 kids, oldest is 24, youngest is 5, 4 boys, one girl, I am in property but not on the construction side, we own a couple of blocks of flats etc, so looking after the tenants keeps me busy. Never been out of the country, unless you count Walvis Bay Naval Base. Far as I can figure, we got everything here thats overseas so why bother, altho' one of my kids may be going over to Oz so work on a sugar mill railway line, not sure if thats going to happen though.
My main interest is photography, transport related, I own the sa-transport website, thats how I found this place, Pule hotlinked some of my pictures to here :eek2:
Other interests include our V8's, the two cougars in the pictures are ours, 1970 one is mine, thats the pic in my first post under 'classic', the last one in the sunset post belongs to my significant other. We have about 12 V8's in various stages of disrepair, one day when we find the time we will get round to fixing them up, but the cougars are running, and one ranchero.
Thats about it.

Oh yeah, one extra thing, Caisson, in your post on the first page here you mentioned Central, and Club Riches, interesting place that was. :)

16 years old, I live in the Netherlands in a nice suburb of Utrecht.
I go to high school/secundary school. Just 1 1/2 years before i go to university. i want to study dentistry cause that's a job where you do almost nothing and earn a lot of money to afford travel to, I dunno, South Africa.
My family also has several houses(just two) In morocco. We go there almost every summer. This year I'll go twice, once with friends and the other time with familly.
I hope to visit the most southern part of Africa in my life(dont be afraid it will be soon) cause I allready visited the most northern part of the continent.

Just wanted to say hi to all the other development junkies out there. Joined this forum a couple of weeks ago - because it is really cool and informative. i am a political analist for a south african ngo. Live in centurion (that piece of bloemfontein-like flatland between jozi and ptown). Got used to it now, at least it is central. I love Jozi (she is such a drama queen) but on days that she is too much I prefer her twin, Pretoria.

To those who oppose the gautrain... I spent 2,5hours in traffic the other day from centurion to a place near stanley ave in jozi. No accidents or stationary vehicles - just traffic. can you imagine what it is going to be like in another four years? Bring on the train, its ambitious, but damn - we need it!

unless a lot of people like commuting four hours a day - i for one hate it!

Durb's is defo my ultimate destination when I get back to SA. Though if I engineer a transfer with my company back to SA (for a year or two ) will be to Jhb. (born and bred there incl. school & varsity). Have travelled round the world to many places and think the Durbanites (South African's in general) sell the themselves short. There are many natural beauty spots, and more than a few world class venues, that are streets ahead of the rest of the world. Just need to market it postively

dysan1
June 7th, 2006, 11:24 AM
I agree, alot of durbanites do sell themselves and the city short. The reason they do in my opinion is that they havent travelled enough and have the typical south african mentality that overseas is better. i blame it on ignorance

mike2005
June 7th, 2006, 05:16 PM
nope am not kidding. cost R15,000 and was a great investment. Now my range rover is a sort of armoured vehicle. its got run flat tyres as well so its basically hijack proof. And blacked out windows too. Its worth the money to get it all done. I had it done through a chap I know who works at Denel so I dont know how much it costs normally. As for Midrand it is very cool altho I dont know that estate personally (altho personally the trafic in to sandton from there every morning would drive me mad!!)

Mike I agree with you totally about the saffa mentality. Durbs is as good as any overseas city but a great deal of south africans are very immature and just always believ the grass is greener etc when it actually is not and this is an awsome place to live in. I for one would not want to live in any other country in the world.

mike2005
June 7th, 2006, 10:49 PM
not really fear just practicality. Its not that unusual. Quite a few people I know have had it done. Its just sensible realy. I dont have fear living here as if I lived my life in fear I wouldnt be enjoying Jozi as much as Iam but having said that I am aware of the downside of this city and I do take practical precautions. I would recomend it to anyone. After all its no different to having electric fencing and armed response: its just a sensible precaution in Joburg!

Hi guys! Just thought I'd introduce myself. I've been reading this forum for months now and finally decided to register.

I'm a student at the moment, studying Law at the University of Pretoria. I originally come from Polokwane, but I obviously live in Pretoria these days. I'm a huge fan of Durban, always loved the city! Skyscrapers has been a passion of mine for years now, and every new development makes me proud to live in SA.

By the way, thanks to all of you for the information currently available on this forum! There is always something new on some amazing new project. :)

^^ Hey there!! a BIG Welcome Mate...think u are our first Pretoria guy and most definately the first from Polokwane!!

I wish that more people that come to the forums and read will sign up like you have, the more voices we have on here the better for South Africa and the better informed we all can be!

I hope u come back regularily and add things about Pretoria if you know, Polokwane too...we never hear much about either place...now if only the PE guys wld raise their voices...

Anyone from Bloem? East London? George? Pmb? Nelspruit? These are areas that must surely have something going, even if it isnt on the scale of the 3 biggies.

I feel for PE, more should be going on in a city of its size!

Are you comfortable with your sexuality Durbsboi? Cos it really seems like you're constantly trying to prove something...

Anyway, I'll just introduce myself... my name's Anton and I'm typing from Spain... I've been checking your forum for a really long time but I haven't really posted over here... some of you guys may know me already, like joburg.

Hi all,

I wanted to properly introduce myself to the forum, even though I've been posting messages for several weeks.

Unsurprisingly, I'm a procrastinator! I'm also an American. I have been fortunate to visit SA, and Durban in particular, several times over the past 18 years. My family currently have property in Umhlanga (hence the name), but we also stayed on South Beach in 1989-90.

Currently, I am finishing my legal education, and hope to become a full-fledged lawyer later this year.

Also, I will be making another visit to Durban (and the rest of SA) in a month. This will be my wife's first visit, and I can't wait to show her as much as I can of the country that I love so much.

Best regards,
Umhlanga
