Azn_chi_boi April 12th, 2005, 12:39 PM Great pics, feels like I went on a tour of Minneapolis.
MplsTodd April 13th, 2005, 08:33 PM A Great collection of views. Interesting balance of old and new, downtown corporate versus neighborhoods. My only question would be why don't you have more photos of the lakes or the riverfront. I've always felt these were the amenities that make Minneapolis such a great place to live (and make me toerate the cold weather).
PS: A word about the weather: Although it is damn cold here in January, I'd argue that we have a dry cold versus a damp cold out east. I've lived in New Jersey and spent time in Ohio, and I think 20 degrees in Mpls is the same as 30 degrees out east.
get13 May 14th, 2005, 12:48 AM Wow, I'm impressed. I didn't know Minneapolis had so many great buildings.
Mplsuptown May 15th, 2005, 01:35 AM Nice set of pictures. If I had one suggestion to make is the one where it's posted with the Metrodome and St Paul skyline in background. People may see the Cedar Riverside and East Bank of UofM and think that's what St. Paul is. Maybe state St. Paul on the horizon.
gaviidae May 15th, 2005, 02:00 AM Have you ever thought about doing a photo tour of Saint Paul? I think it would be rather refreshing after being bombarded with Minneapolis threads.

Phoenix Ashes June 30th, 2005, 12:08 AM I spent a week in Minneapolis last summer. It was warm and very muggy. I was somewhat surprised what a car town it is. Downtown, sadly, seems really screwed up with surface parking lots and garages. I could only wonder what the city must have looked like once before the wrecking ball. The area around the Metrodome, in particular, must have been something.
On the other hand, Uptown is a revelaton, a real urban neighborhood with street-front retail. The neighborhood behind it, Lake of the Isles, is about as beautiful as I've ever seen.
I also visited Mall of America which is horrifying. Lake Minnetonka was impressive, St Paul is very disappointing, although some of the downtown buildings are quite beautiful. The river and countryside are very lovely.
I don't mean to rag on Minneapolis - it's still a much better city than 95% of the other cities in America. Downtown has actual retail, and appears to be the nexus of a real music scene. I wondered if the extreme winters don't account for the need of people to drive to work. Is simply waiting for a bus in January that uncomfortable? The architecture, btw, is much better than in places like Denver or Phoenix. I want to return someday to see Pelli's library, and I hope some of those gaps in downtown's fabric will be filled.

no worries, i live in mpls and actually agree with pretty much all of your post. Downtown is better than most in this country...but that's not saying much and it has the potential to be so much better! Hopefully all the new condos will help to fill out downtown and add more vibrancy to the blighted areas.
ps. and yes, when it's 20 degrees below zero and the windchill is negative 60, it is not only unpleasent to wait for the bus, but downright dangerous! I've lived here without a car for several years now and i hate it in the winter.

Lol, you should've been here last week, the humidity was gross. On Tuesday, it went from sunny to pitch black in the middle of the afternoon from a storm. I was in downtown, and I remember looking up in the sky and it looked like a scene from ghostbusters. On Thursday, it was 97 degrees and humid. Right now at 10 pm, it's 81 degrees with a 72 degree dewpoint (humid) and thunderstorms.

Thanks for looking at my pics.
The Twins' proposed ballbark site is visable in the pics taken from the IDS. It's the parking lot behind the Target Center. The guy in the picture is probably passed out from too much listerine. His buddy in the top of the pic was up there yelling at no one in particular. If you look closely, you can see an empty liquor bottle under the bridge.

heavyzakura334 October 24th, 2005, 08:14 PM alot of the brick buildings are awesome, its too bad that they are not being fixed...
araman0 October 24th, 2005, 09:35 PM When I went to the twin cities for the first time this Summer, I was blown away by how dense downtown Minneapolis was. I always thought that downtown St. Paul would be more dense than DT Minneapolis, but that certainly was not the case.
ChiLooper October 25th, 2005, 02:30 AM Cool pics
Navin October 25th, 2005, 04:41 PM I didn't know motored boats were permitted on Lake Calhoun (fishermen pic). Are small engines allowed or did they row that boat? Just curious. Beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing.
warwickland October 25th, 2005, 05:14 PM thanks for the street level pics...understandably (but fustrating), mpls photographers have a fetish with the glass and steel...

The anti-cheesehead October 25th, 2005, 05:34 PM Thanks for the comments everyone.

You can't have a combustion engine on Lake Calhoun, but you can still use electric trolling motors. That's what the fishermen were using.
The city of Minneapolis will occasionally use boats with gas engines on Lake Calhoun.
weill October 29th, 2005, 02:38 AM great pictures, and nice grafitti...

What the hell? People actually GO in the river up there????
To be fair, I've never been to Minnesota - but i've seen the Mississippi river in New Orleans, St. Louis, Memphis, and Mississippi itself. Every time I've ever seen that river, it looked fucking toxic. Admittedly, it's a blueish-color in these pictures as opposed to the turd brown it is in the South, but still - people actually go in that water?
Doesn't the sewage from the Twin Cities dump out in the river? I have never understood why people go in any ocean, river, or lake. This is what swimming pools are for. Natural bodies of water are fucking nasty.
That being said, I really enjoyed the pics! Best Twin Cities thread I"ve ever seen.
Æsahættr March 3rd, 2007, 07:26 AM ^^
isn't that lake calhoun?
Minneapolitan March 3rd, 2007, 08:36 AM That's one of our 12,000+ pristine lakes, stupid. It's Lake Calhoun. And someone (ahem) would be a regular Prissy Pants to refuse to swim in a natural body of water. I would think that the chlorine they saturate pools with is more harmful to your body than that water...
PS. I was just poking fun at you. ;)
The anti-cheesehead March 3rd, 2007, 05:07 PM ^^Lol.
I've been swimming the lakes my whole life and I still haven't grown any extra limbs, or developed lesions and scales. All that city street run-off, all that carp poop, it's good for ya.
And yes, people do swim in the river down in the Lake Pepin area.
A couple weeks ago I saw I guy water-skiing in the river between Minneapolis/St. Paul. No shit.
vgmLiquid March 3rd, 2007, 05:53 PM Bodies of water here in Minnesota tend to be very clean. We do a good job keeping it that way and have a lot of laws, etc, to keep it that way. I remember Long Lake on the western edge of the metro used to be dead. The lake couldn't hold fish since it was so polluted. Over about 6 years they purified the whole thing and now fish live happily in it and people swim and water ski regularly in it. I remember growing up I lived off of Lake Minnetonka (the largest and possibly busiest lake in the metro), I remember we did experiments on the water to test various aspects of it...it turned out to be almost as clean as drinking water except with nutrients for wildlife to flourish.
Water here is pretty damn clean.
cmj2k2 March 6th, 2007, 01:31 AM My uncle owns land on the mississippi about 30 miles from the headwaters, I heard its clean enough to drink. I've never drank it, but I have taken a few baths/brushed my teeth/ opened my eyes in it to rinse out a piece of sand in my eye.
We do have very good enviormental laws but the main reason its cleaner up here is because we send our shit south to all the other river cities :hilarious
Absolut355 March 6th, 2007, 01:55 AM I used to swim in the Mississippi River all the time as a kid. Granted, that was minus cubic tons and tons of crap that have been added since. But meh, doesn't really bother me. That's what showers are for. Plus, its [hopefully and usually] treated before its dumped in the river.
We do have very good enviormental laws but the main reason its cleaner up here is because we send our shit south to all the other river cities :hilarious
So THAT'S what was brushing up against my leg. Well, that and the other multitude of turds floating down the river.
