Not large skyline if you think how big city itself is. New York and Chicago skylines are lot bigger.

7/10

One would expect the second-largest city in the United States to have a larger skyline, with perhaps two or three supertalls.

That said, the skyline is extremely well balanced, and the architecture (especially Library Tower and California Plaza) is quite nice. I hope that the skyline continues to expand outwards and upwards.

It's actually not such a small skyline; It's simply that the topography of LA dwarfs the downtown area. The mountains and urban basin render the high-rises as fairly trivial.

In a more intimate environment, LA's downtown would seem much more substantial, but I think that big country is part of the appeal of the Western United States.

Owing to film and television, it's also quite iconic and would probably be one of the more recognisable skylines in the world.

small for a city of it's size, but it's way better than a lot of skylines.

Why is everyone giving LA a 10 ? There is some serious bias here. It's a great looking skyline, but you have to bring the city's size into the equation before rating it. If LA had a population of 1 million, it would get an 8.5. But it has 4 million people, so... its gets a 6/10. LA is a beautiful city, and has a gorgeous skyline, but it's extremely weak for it's size.

population has nothing to do with a skyline. just rate it what it is. plain and simple. it not called rate skyline vs population.

Well, you know how people say it's a good skyline for it's population ? Well, LA's skyline isn't good for its population size.

Hate to say it, but you're wrong. Have you been to LA? There are seemingly hundreds of skyscrapers outside of LA, in small clusters like Century City, but also just spread out all over the place. I drove through the city last may for about 6 hours, and let me tell you, there's a lot more than downtown.

yeah.. not much tall condos/apts/mix/hotels there when compared to CHI/NYC.... all 150m+ buildings in LA are all offices except for about 2

even with strict earthquake standards... maybe some people there still have the fault lines underneath downtown LA in mind & doesn't want to live that high up?

I think it's mostly attributable to the fact that no one really wants to live downtown. Downtown is not a very desirable place to live, it feels desolate.

So, the only reason to build condos if not building downtown would be for the views of the city. However, hills surround the city, and this makes views quite ample that are much better than what skyscrapers can offer.

this was true 10 years ago. now? not so much. The downtown population is up to 55,000 (i live down here and as a realtor, i can tell you the demand for downtown grows every day. Rental vacancy is at 3% with high rents)

The reason that we didnt see many new ground up towers (about 10 were built in the last boom) is that the downtown renaissance started with rehabs of the vast historic building stock. now that a majority of these buildings are accounted for, we are seeing numerous 20 - 40 story buildings proposed and that are to break ground in the next year.

What makes LA's skyline so unique are the multiple skyline clusters that stands out to the low-rise cityscape.

Especially Downtown LA where most scrapers are 700 ft or above. Plus the iconic US Bank Tower which is unique and it stands out compared to glass and steel box towers.

As a native Angelino I would love downtown to grow outward and upward. That said I still gave it an 8.5 for sentimental value and cause it has room to grow
