Seven devt projects to uplift KK’s standards
28th February, 2007
KOTA KINABALU: The City Hall has planned seven development projects to uplift Kota Kinabalu’s standards on a par with cities in developed countries.

Mayor, Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim said he hopes the projects can be implemented this year. Some of the projects are:

...

6. Improving the drainage system and landscape in the city and adding more lights in critical areas;

...

Critical areas, definitely. But also everywhere else. DBKK has let too many non-working streetlights gone unattended for too long. The streets and roads under their jurisdiction are pretty dark during my visit last month.

RM23m Aquatica to be another KK tourist draw soon
Kota Kinabalu: People here can expect a unique experience as well as become more aware of the marine environment when a RM23 million Aquatica KK is completed within two months at Mile Two, Tuaran Road near here.

The marine centre's Technical Director, Prof. Steve Oakley, said over 500 species of marine animals would be placed in an aquarium at Aquatica KK coupled with an ocean science discovery centre.

The discovery centre is an important component of Aquatica KK since it envisages the whole idea of the marine centre's establishment, which is to promote conservation of marine life through education and awareness.

Educational modules such as puzzles, interactive displays and touch pools are among the set up at the centre in Tuaran Road that is being developed under phase one of Aquatica KK.

Towards this end, he said efforts were being made to bring in rural school children and those in coastal areas to enable them to learn more about environment.

Phase two of Aquatica KK focuses more on the marine life, which is going to be equipped with bigger tanks and an underground walk-through tunnel at 1 Borneo Hyper Mall along Sulaman Road near UMS. The project is funded by private investors and Innoprise Sdn Bhd.

To get an idea of the centre's outlook, he said it would be similar to the ones in Langkawi, Sentosa in Singapore and at the KLCC in Kuala Lumpur.

Illustrating the importance of conservation of the coral reefs in Sabah, Oakley said the corals that would be placed at the centre were "cultivated" in a farm for five years now in a discrete area.

These corals were collected from damaged corals due to fish bombing activities off Sabah waters, he said, adding that based on his surveys the coastal problems in Sabah were the consequences of lack of awareness and education. Apart from coral reefs, the centre also have sections on padi fields and aquaculture as well as a shark tank, rays and skates, snakes, turtles, fresh water species and rainforest.

Some of the species in the exhibits would be imported but most of it would be those that are endemic to Sabah since it should be about the coasts and reefs here, he said.

Hmmm...wat do you mean by mall or shoplots? If me, I prefer to said like this, KK Times Square more to shopping street while Tanjung Plaza more to shopping mall. But Warisan Square consists of two types which there are shopping street and shoppng mall.

Coz if you said shoplots, every malls oso got shoplots la. Inside a mall is the shoplots.

ROAD UPGRADE TO OVERCOME GRIDLOCK
16th March, 2007
KOTA KINABALU: The federal government has given the nod to upgrade the four-kilometre long Jalan Kepayan here to overcome traffic congestion. Works Minister Datuk Seri Samy Vellu announced this at a Press conference held at the state Public Works Department HQ in Sembulan here yesterday after attending a briefing on the progress of various federal-funded infrastructure projects in Sabah under the 9th Malaysia Plan.

He said the approval for the project, costing RM144 million, was given by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi two days ago, following a special request by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman recently, citing the pressing need to ensure a smooth traffic going in and out of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).

“Datuk Musa had raised the traffic congestion issue along Jalan Kepayan and requested the federal government to resolve the problem. “And, I got the approval two days ago from the Prime Minister who said the Kepayan Road upgrading project could be implemented through the ‘deferred payment’ scheme,” Samy related.

He also said the road would be upgraded to six lanes from the existing four lanes. And, additionally, two four-lane flyovers would be built – one at the Kepayan – Lintas junction and the other at the Jalan Mat Salleh junction. The Minister was convinced that once completed, the project would considerably ease the gridlock in the area and ensure a smooth traffic flow. Samy also said following a special request from the various elected representatives like Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili, Datuk Ewon Ebin and Datuk Masidi Manjun, his ministry had agreed to construct in phases the Ranau-Kota Marudu new road which stretched over a distance of some 100 kilometres.

Samy said the project in question was among several federal-funded infrastructure projects that had been identified as important projects that could uplift the people’s wellbeing. He also disclosed that the federal government allocated RM83 million to repair road damages caused by recent floods as well as rehabilitation of roads affected by landslips.

Samy added that his ministry and the state Infrastructure Development Ministry had reached an agreement to hold quarterly meetings to monitor the progress of the federal projects and to discuss future development plans.

“A report would then be submitted to the Federal Cabinet for consideration,” he said. And, Samy also said he would be visiting Kota Marudu on Friday to inspect the slope problem affecting SMK Sapulut, among others. Also present yesterday were Bernard and Dr Maximus who are both Ministers in the Prime Minister’s Deaprtment, Ewon (Industrial Development Minister), Masidi (Youth and Sports Minister and Infrastructures Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah.

RM144mil KK road upgrade

http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/upload/160307la.jpg

Kota Kinabalu: The proposed upgrading of Jalan Putatan-Kepayan to overcome traffic congestion along the 4km stretch has received the Federal Government's approval, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said Thursday.

He said the project, costing RM144 million, would involve widening of the existing road from four to six lanes and construction of two flyovers, at the Jalan Lintas and Jalan Mat Salleh interchange, respectively.

The project will be carried out through deferred payment where the Government will only pay the contractor, Global Upline, after the project is completed and handed over to the Government, he told reporters after a briefing on implementation of projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan in Sabah, here.

Samy said discussions would be held with the relevant authorities to speed up implementation of the project.

At a Press conference later, Samy Vellu also announced a grant of RM230 million to Sabah for maintenance of state roads, apart from RM33 million for maintenance of federal roads for 2007. He also said Sabah was allocated RM55 million for repair of various infrastructures that were damaged in the floods early this year.

On the RM30 million allocation for the Jalan Kota Marudu-Ranau project, Samy Vellu said part of it would be spent for upgrading of roads in Kota Marudu and also in Ranau.

Samy Vellu, who arrived here on Wednesday for a three-day visit, also said the Federal Government would take into consideration several projects requested by Members of Parliaments and State Assemblymen in their respective constituencies.

He also disclosed that during his meeting with State Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah, they had agreed to hold a meeting every three months to discuss about project proposals before submitting to the Cabinet for approval.

Also present at the briefing were Tan, Ministers in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Bernard Dompok and Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili, Industrial Development Minister Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin and Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun.

After the briefing, Samy left for Ranau to inspect road projects being implemented in the district.

On Friday, he will be in Kota Marudu for the same purpose.

U mean only KK got traffic jam? Y special request for this only? obviously this guy has forgotten where his area is haha..........

ironically, the best way to solve traffic jam is to develop the whole state evenly instead of concentrate everything in KK haha..... there r so many expressways n LRT etc in KL but the traffic problem only getting worse.... no?

Minister: Malaysia's inflation rate declining

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia's inflation rate is on the decline with January's figure of 3.2% expected to dip further this month, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal said.

He said inflation was kept in check partly by the government's move of imposing price controls during the recent festive periods.

The presence of hypermarkets throughout the country was also another contributing factor in prices of consumer items being kept in check.

"The government has been able to contain excessive increase in prices," he said after opening Sabah's first Giant hypermarket at Kolombong in Inanam near here on Friday.

Noting that retail and distributive trade in Malaysia recorded a hike of 2.6% in 2002 to 5.9% last year, Shafie said this was partly due to the expansion of hypermarket operations in the country.

"The economic benefits from hypermarket operations are far reaching and substantial. There is compelling evidence that the Malaysian economy has gained significantly from investments by international retailers," he added.

Shafie said despite this, his ministry was not taking a "liberal" approach in the issuance of licences for hypermarkets, adding that it would allow for such businesses in areas with a large population.

He said smaller retailers need not fear being crowded out but instead learn to be innovative and take advantage of linkages created by hypermarkets.

"No business in the modern global economy can survive unless it embraces change, innovates and responds to the need of the market," Shafie added.

GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd regional director for East Asia Datuk John Coyle said the company operates the Giant, Cold Storage and Guardian Pharmacy chain of stores in the country.

It intends to open three more hypermarkets in Sabah and Sarawak this year.

Coyle said the company would be opening its first hypermarket in the east coast town of Sandakan at the end of this month while its second mega retail outlet will be opened at the City Mall here in April.

GCH is a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based Dairy Farm that in turn is a division of the international conglomerate Jardine Matheson Holdings Ltd.

4 in the new BDC gyratory interchange.

cloverleaf interchange uses a lot of land. Not suitable in the city centre. Drivers gotta slow down (a lot) in case they want to turn right... This will cause serius congestion if the traffic flow is high. But it all depends on the situation there. :)

It should wait until the Indian-based company has proven itself to be a good steward of the concessions currently acquired under the Sabah Forest Industries (SFI).

Making the call was PKR Sabah deputy chairperson Christina Liew (pictured), who in a statement issued here yesterday was responding to news reports that BILT wants more concessions.

“Scarcely has the ink dried on BILT’s acquisition of a massive 97.78% of SFI, and we are already confronted with its demand for even more SFI concession areas,” she noted.

She said it was ‘highly disturbing’ that the state government should even consider the request, before Sabahans have had the chance to judge for themselves the impact of BILT’s ownership and management of the massive area already under foreign control.

The BILT Group Managing Director, had requested an additional 60,000 hectares in addition to the 300,000 now within BILT’s control, according to news reports yesterday.

“This is new territory for all concerned; there should not be any rush in selling off even more of our state’s resources until it is proven that doing so will truly benefit the people and the environment.

“We ask the Chief Minister to take a moment to consider the people and the state of Sabah’s future before making a decision. The eyes of the people are on him now as we await his response to BILT’s request for more concessions.

“We urge the state government and particularly the Chief Minister to exercise caution when making a decision that would affect the lives of Sabahans; not just in this generation but for generations to come, since concessions are up to 99 years,” she urged.

Besides this, she also questioned the propriety of the said deal arguing that it may not be in the best interest of the state and its people.

“What appears to be a commercially profitable move for the Lion Group may not be in the best interest of Sabah in the long run. Selling off our forests may create more jobs in the short-term but it also means diminishing our resources and giving up control over state assets for up to 99 years.

“As such, the Chief Minister, as a custodian of our state’s natural resources, should make these decisions with wisdom and in good conscience, so that the future generations will not have to pay for any mistake he or his administration makes,” she argued.

She questioned how the state government could have so easily allowed this foreign takeover to occur.

“Were there no restrictive clauses in the initial agreement with the Lion Group to prevent it from selling its entire stake to a foreign entity?

She noted that until BILT’s acquisition, SFI was Malaysia’ largest integrated pulp and paper mill which got its raw materials from Sabah forests.

“It used to be wholly-owned by Malaysians, with the Lion Group Industries holding 97.78% and the state government controlling only a tiny 2.2% stake.

“Unfortunately with BILT acquiring Lion’s stake, we are looking at a total concession area of 300,000 hectares being in foreign hands until 2094,” she pointed out.

WHAT THE HECK WAS THE GOVERNMENT (BOTH STATE AND FEDERAL) DOING? HOW CAN A FOREIGN COMPANY WITH NO PROVEN RECORD TAKE OVER CONTROL OF SUCH A VAST STATELAND?

WHAT IS THERE LEFT IN SABAH FOR SABAHAN?

Iceless skating rink for Kota Kinabalu

New idea: Gervasini (right) exchanging documents with Dr Ting while Dr
Ting's wife, sales and marketing director Lona Liang Su Chuan holds a skate
shoe with the special blade in Kota Kinabalu recently.

KOTA KINABALU: A shopping centre in the state capital is set to create a record by offering the country’s largest “ice free” ice-skating rink.

By May, the Kompleks Asia City Mall in downtown Kota Kinabalu will boast a 378 sq m Smart Ice Skating Rink.

“We are committed to making this complex a hub for family-oriented entertainment,” said Dr Ting Ing Chiew, managing director of AC Property Development Sdn Bhd, the Kompleks Asia City developer

He told reporters here recently that the RM1.5mil skating rink at the complex would also be the first such permanent facility in the country.

To date, smaller, mobile versions of the Smart Ice Arena have been featured at various Kuala Lumpur shopping centres such as Mid Valley Mega Mall, Berjaya Times Square, The Mines as well as Era Square in Seremban and SACC Mall in Shah Alam.

Dr Ting said although the Smart Ice Skating Rink was “iceless” those using it would enjoy skating in it as in conventional ice-skating rinks.

“Essentially, you can enjoy ice-skating without having to put on thick clothing to keep you warm,” he added.

The developers of Smart Ice had come up with patented ice skates called the Smart Skating System that combines the features of ice skates and roller skates and were very user-friendly, Dr Ting added.

Also at the press conference was Smart Ice Sdn Bhd Asia Pacific regional manager Filippo Gervasini who said that children as young as four years could use the skating rink.

He said similar ‘iceless’ skating rinks have been installed in more than 16 countries with sizes ranging from 500 sq m to 30,000 sq m.

ice melt is just an excuse lah!! i don't see the one at Sunway Pyramid melting. the reason must be the high maintainence cost. if the maintainence cost is not that high, i believe the one in Bukit Jambul will still be there

The sunway pyramid ice skating is not making money bcoz maintenance is too costly. Part of the income is depend on the new student who r willing to learn skating skill. other that that it is all depend on the weekend income.

In my opinion, AC offering 378m2 skating area is good idea but it is too small. 378m2 is about 19.5m x 19.5m and 19.5m is = 60ft. If the area is only able to allowed 60ft x 60ft, mean a link house length x a link house length, which is about 3600 ft2 or a area of 2 unit shophouse (22'x80'). This is dangerous....coz the space is not enough for u to skate and 60 ft distance is too short. It is not logic at all....

sunway ice skating photo can refer to the following link

The picture shown at least 80ft (width) x 400ft (long) = 32,000 ft2 or 2,973m2.

From what i read, ice in the rink will eventually be cut and pitted, no matter how well-groomed the ice rink is...

So, to maintain the rink, an ice resurfacing machine will be used for that purpose...

According to this

www.howstuffworks.com/ice-rink6.htm

That machine typically costs $ 55,000 each......
