Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah known fondly by the locals as KK, is commonly described by Sabah Tourism as Malaysia's Borneo. To many, the very mention of Borneo still conjures up images of unexplored jungles and wildlife roaming free. If this is what you came for, you won't be disappointed. But anticipate extra surprises, as KK, with its expanding cityscape and growing population, is also strikingly modern, bustling and quite happening!

Situated by the sea, against the backdrop of the majestic Mount Kinabalu and within easy reach of the mountainous inlands, present-day KK has a population of more than 200,000 made up of Malays, Chinese and some 32 local ethnic groups. The city is also a magnet for immigrants from the neighbouring countries, who flock the land in search of greener pastures. This amazing mix of cultures, reflected in the daily frenetic atmosphere in the city, will either stun or shock you, but this perhaps is where the real charm of KK lies.

architecture eh? not sure about Kuching but in KK you should head to sabah foundation building, the tallest structure in borneo (i think) at 30 stories high. you will also noticed many other modern highrise buildings are government complexes...
also KK is easily accessible to Tunku abdul rahman marine park, which is only minutes away from the city centre by boats, where you can have a day at its beaches (i havent been there for a decade and not sure how it look like today but it is one of top attractions in KK), or just go shopping although shopping in KL is far more superior...

More hotel rooms needed
Updated : 05-12-2005
Media : The Star

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah needs at least another 8,000 hotel rooms in the next three years as the state's tourism industry looks set to continue its bull run.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat said the existing 12,000 hotel rooms would not be enough for the anticipated increase in the number of tourist arrivals to the state, which has been aggressively promoting eco-tourism.

The state also expects more tourists to arrive following the expansion and upgrading of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, scheduled to be completed in three years.

Chong, who is state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said more rooms were needed in towns outside the state capital.

'If there are more accommodation in Tawau and Sandakan, I am sure major airlines will operate more direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to these two towns,” he said, urging hoteliers to continue maintaining reasonable room rates to attract tourists.

Students from Japan plant hibiscus in KK
Friday December 9, 2005

GREENING PROJECT: Iliyas planting a hibiscus with the help of Kota
Kinabalu city hall’s Landscape and Parks Department director Walter Kenson.
On the left is Hiromichi supervising his students.

As a contribution to the community, 165 students of Konohana Gakuin High School in Osaka helped plant 170 hibiscus plants at the Rainforest Park in Kota Kinabalu on Monday.

At the planting ceremony, Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim said he was happy and touched by the students who had come all way from Japan to contribute to greening the city.

He said the tree planting was in response to a national campaign launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Sept 16 this year.

During a hibiscus planting ceremony in the city on Sept 29, volunteers planted 48,000 of the decorative plants within 15 minutes.

The feat is expected to be recorded in the Malaysia Book of Records.

Konohama Gakuin High School chairman Hirai Hiromichi said that members of the group would return to Sabah over the next five years to check on the hibiscus they planted.

He said the school carried out a similar project in Guam where students planted hundreds of bougainvillea plants.

Sabah gets ready for influx of tourists
Updated : 16-12-2005
Media : Business Times
Story By : JULIA CHAN

SABAH is preparing for an influx of tourist arrivals once the expansion of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=183959&page=5&pp=20) is completed in 2007.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat said the two-and-a-half-year project, costing the Government some RM1 billion, involves the expansion of the runway and construction of new aerobridges to cater for more and bigger aircraft.

'We are confident of achieving our target of 2.7 million tourists by 2007,” he said at the recent launch of Silk Air's direct Singapore-Kota Kinabalu route.

Chong said several projects are in the pipeline to increase the number of hotel rooms to support the expected growth in tourist arrivals.

'We already have several five-star resorts, including the Shangri-La Rasa Ria, which are planning to expand their rooms.

An additional 8,000 hotel rooms are needed within the next three years or so to support the state's rapidly booming tourism industry.

Meanwhile, Silk Air chief executive Mike Barclay said the latest route is expected to turn profitable in less than six months, judging from the overwhelming response received so far.

'I was quite taken aback with how quickly the flights filled up. I don't believe we’ve had quite this big a response for our new routes in quite awhile,” he said.

The twice-weekly flights will take off every Monday and Friday until May, when there is hope to increase the flights to four times weekly.

'Our new destination has tremendous potential based on the demand from Singapore. Usually new routes take about six months to make profits but based on the initial response, it might be a lot quicker for this route,” said Barclay.

AirAsia to start flights within Sabah, Sarawak
Updated : 16-12-2005
Media : Business Times
Story By : JONISTON BANGKUAI

BUDGET airline AirAsia is expected to start operations within Sabah and Sarawak soon, group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes said.

He said AirAsia is in the final lap of discussions with Malaysia Airlines on its proposal to operate domestic flights in the two states.

'We are committed to serving the domestic routes in Sabah and Sarawak,” Fernandes told a press conference in conjunction with the inaugural commercial flight of AirAsia's newly-purchased Airbus A320 to Kota Kinabalu.

On hand to welcome the arrival of passengers on the flight were Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Yahya Hussein, Tourism Board general manager Datuk Irene Benggon and Fernandes.

Fernandes said AirAsia will use five or six aircraft to cover all the major towns in the two states.

Among the routes to be covered are Kota Kinabalu-Kuching, Kuching-Tawau, Kota Kinabalu-Tawau, Kuching-Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu-Sandakan.

Fernandes also announced that AirAsia will start direct flights between Johor Baru and Tawau as well as Johor Baru and Sandakan on February 1 next year.

The direct flights will cater to not just Johoreans but also tourists from neighbouring Singapore.

'We had set a target of bringing in a million visitors into Sabah this year,” he said, adding that AirAsia has since its inception four years ago flown 2.5 million people into Sabah.

Fernandes said there are plans for AirAsia to introduce direct flights between Kota Kinabalu and major cities in China. 'There is huge demand from China for direct flights to Kota Kinabalu,” he added.

well, we are hoping to see KK growing in the coming years despite of the discovery of oil & gas and soon will be the biggest Bio-diesel mill in the World.

Under the Musa management we can see a huge changing in the State economy and development.

However, it is not easy to do business in KK. As a developer myself, the Government barrier is extremely tough. Problem to deal with Land & Survey, Hasil Bumi, DBKK..... is still hard. Thier efficiency is extremely slow. Now toward yr end seem that they have take an early new yr break. My man asking its progress they ask us come back next yr.

When you deal with the Government agencies it is preferable to have a person on thier side or a friend of them to keep things running smootly.

As the skycraper myself i always wanted to have high rise building in KK. However i was advise that KK will not be able to do a high rise building b/c it is on aircraft route. The airport is too close to the city.

If not because of the financial crisis i'm sure KK will be a more developed State because of the 3 proposed sea reclaimation project signed (sembulan, tanjung aru & likas bay). I'm sure if those project got the green light i'm sure it will transform the image of KK. Due to the CM rotation system those 3 project were terminated by the newly CM.

KK will be Booming. One project of mine will at lease improve the image of KK. Stay tune guys provided i get a green light from the Government !

Sabah folk get into festive spirit
Tuesday December 20, 2005
BY RUBEN SARIO

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2005/12/20/southneast/ms_pg01iking.jpg

WITH just days to go before Dec 25, the Yuletide cheer is being felt around Sabah with carolling groups calling on homes decked with the season’s decorations, notably the colourfully lit Christmas trees.

All dressed up too are shopping centres and hotels that have been organising various events in the Yuletide spirit.

Hundreds of people from various churches around Kota Kinabalu gathered at Sutera Harbour Resort recently for the sixth annual Amazing Carols by Candlelight.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2005/12/20/southneast/ms_pg06sutera.jpg

PREPARATION: People buying candles for carolling at
Sutera Harbour Resort recently.

Anglican church Bishop Datuk Yong Ping Chung launched the event by lighting up the first candle that was followed by candles being lit by hundreds of people including some tourists.

This was followed by the singing of traditional Christmas favourites such as Silent Night, Joy to the World and more recent tunes including From a Distance.

Apart from the singing of carols, children at the event were also treated to a puppet show.

The resort also gave a special treat to some 60 children including those from a Kota Kinabalu orphanage by taking them for a ride on board the steam-powered North Borneo Railway last Saturday. .

Over at the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort, some 160 children, teachers and staff from eight charity homes around the state capital took part in the hotel’s annual Christmas party.

Meridien expects full occupancy
02 September, 2005

http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/upload/020905la.jpg

Kota Kinabalu: The five-star Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu opened its doors to guests Thursday, the latest addition to the number of international hotels recognising Sabah's rising importance as a premier tourist destination in Borneo, in general, and Malaysia in particular.

It is the second Le Meridien hotel in Malaysia, following the first that opened in Kuala Lumpur last year. Currently, there are 137 luxury and upscale Le Meridien hotels in 56 countries located in top cities throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia Pacific, Africa and Middle East.

Its General Manager, Winston L. Reinboth, said the hotel has 306 rooms, 32 of which are suites plus a presidential suite priced at RM3,500 per night.

However, only 127 rooms are available thus far at special rates inclusive of breakfast for two during the months of September and October.

"We expect full occupancy in late November or early December since it is the peak months for hotels in Sabah," he said at it's soft launch.

In line with the Government's call for 5-star hotels nationwide to offer minimum rates of USD$80 (RM288) by next year, he said those offered by Le Meridien are relatively cheap for European travellers.

Reinboth said the hotel, located in the heart of downtown Kota Kinabalu, offered guests easy access to local attractions, the commercial district, retail and entertainment facilities, many of them within walking distance.

It is the fifth and latest hotel hugging the coastline stretching from Tanjung Aru to Likas to capitalise on the scenic vistas offered by the five outlying islands and South China Sea.

"The hotel is only minutes from soft adventure, beaches and golfing and also the ideal location for business travellers, a leisure stay or alternatively for meetings and incentives," he said.

Nevertheless, the hotel aims to build its image as a business and leisure accommodation facility for meetings and trans-independent travellers, among others, he said.

The meeting and event facilities are located on the third floor comprising three meeting rooms equipped with the latest in modern technology and boasts an impressive view of the South China Sea.

Reinboth said the main ballroom could accommodate up to 360 guests for banquets. "The banqueting area is not as large as other resorts (operating within the city area) and we don't intend to compete with them on this aspect.

"And we can only handle one major group at a time unlike other resorts which can accommodate up to several groups," he said.

For leisure, he said the hotel features a gym with modern weight and cardiovascular equipment including an outdoor pool with full panoramic sea views and complemented with a pool bar.

The hotel also offers a restaurant facility, a cigar room and lounge.

Reinboth said the property was purchased in January this year with the deal signed on June 3. On why Kota Kinabalu was chosen as Le Meridien's second location in Malaysia, he said the city had huge potential as a major regional centre for business.

"The Government and tourism board has also been very supportiveÉwe can expect to see tremendous growth in the capital and there will be a lot of demand for accommodation facilities."

Its presence would lead to healthy competition between the international hotels operating in the State capital. He would be working closely with the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) on matters pertaining to tourism.

Reinboth said it would also benefit the local community in terms of employment opportunity, the majority of the 200-strong staff being Sabahans.

When fully operational, the hotel expects to have about 237 staff to run the daily operations.

Le Meridien was established in 1972 by Air France to provide a "home from home for its customers" with its first facility, a 1,000-room hotel in Paris that was named Le Meridien Etoile.

In late 1994, Le Meridien was acquired by UK hotel giant, Forte, which in turn was acquired by the Granada Group in 1996.

In April 2000, it signed a global strategic alliance with Japan's Nikko Hotels International while in December, 2000, Lehman Brothers Holding acquired the senior debt of Le Meridien.

Reinboth said several facilities would be launched in Thailand and China next year. It has 26 offices worldwide while its head office located in London.

Meanwhile, Mariany Ham, an Application Consultant for Hotel Systems for Micros-Fidelio Singapore Pte Ltd, was Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu's first guest.

"I certainly feel great being the first customer and I will definitely come back to the same hotel on my next trip," she said. Although not her first time in Sabah, it was definitely a surprise being the first customer for the hotel.

Le Meridien KK forecasts minimum revenue of RM26m next year
22 Dec 2005 3:39 PM

http://www.lemeridien.com/owshare/lemeridien/worldwide/pictures/m/my1850-1.jpg

Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu (http://www.lemeridien.com/malaysia/kota_kinabalu/hotel_my1850.shtml) is forecasting revenue of at least RM26mil next year on the back of an anticipated 60% occupancy rate of its rooms.

Its general manager Winston Reinboth said the hotel was being promoted internationally through the Le Meridien chain and sales offices worldwide, adding that key markets for it included Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.

“Half of the hotel's guests so far have been Malaysians while the remainder were largely Europeans as well as tour groups from China,” Reinboth said in a recent statement.

The hotel opened its doors last September. Reinboth said it had managed to chalk up "a small'' profit in its third month of operation despite operating only 212 of its 306 rooms

Reinboth said it expected to open all its rooms by late January, in time for the anticipated peak period.

He said Le Meridien was also planning to eventually increase its staff strength from the present 235 to 290.

Bus Terminals For Northern, East Coast Sectors Start On Jan 15
January 01, 2006 18:23 PM

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 1 (Bernama) -- The centralised bus terminal for Sabah's northern and east coast sectors in Inanam will be operational on Jan 15 while the terminal for the west coast sector at Tanjung Aru is expected to be opened at the end of the month.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the two terminals would help to improve efficiency in the public transport system in the state besides easing congestion in the city.

He said the centralised bus terminal for the northern and east coast sector was built at a cost of RM4.5 million and had a capacity of up to 80 buses at any one time.

"The terminal will also provide shuttle bus services for the convenience of passengers who wish to proceed to the city centre. Initially, 10 buses will be provided for the shuttle service which will take off every 15 minutes.

"We will increase the number of shuttle buses if the need arises," he told reporters today after visiting the Kota Kinabalu Main Market at Jalan Gaya and the centralised terminal at Inanam, about 10 kilometres from the city centre.

KK defers relocation of hired-car station
Wednesday January 11, 2006

KOTA KINABALU: The decision to relocate the station for southbound hired cars from the present Padang Merdeka area to the new Tanjung Aru Railway Station has been deferred until after Chinese New Year.

Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim said City Hall had decided to postpone the relocation to enable upgrading works to include public toilets and a waiting area at the new station.

Iliyas said the decision was made during a Dec 28 meeting between City Hall and relevant departments, including the police and the Road Transport Department, to facilitate the upgrading works.

He said the move to Tanjung Aru Railway Station was temporary until the state was able to get a permanent site for the bus terminal for southbound buses near Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

Iliyas urged the public to co-operate with City Hall on the relocation.

He said the decision to relocate the hired cars station and the long distance bus terminal away from the city centre was made after a detailed study.

The study took all aspects into consideration, including City Hall's long-term strategy to establish organised and integrated public transport facilities in the city.

In another development, City Hall has also deferred the relocation of long distance buses from Tawau, Sandakan, Ranau, Kudat, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud and Tamparuli to the new bus terminal in Inanam, from today to Jan 15 next year to settle minor operational issues.

Iliyas said the north-bound busses would no longer be allowed to enter the city and must stop at the new bus terminal in Inanam on arrival in Kota Kinabalu after the new date.

For the convenience of passengers, shuttle busses will operate every 15 minutes from the Inanam bus terminal to the shuttle bus station near Padang Merdeka.

'Safe Town' Concept Can Be Implemented, Says Ong
January 30, 2006 18:35 PM

KOTA KINABALU, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- The concept of "safe town" can be a reality if local authorities have proper plans for it, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said Monday.

He said among the ways were conducting close monitoring along walkways and installing closed-circuit television cameras in buildings frequented by the people.

"What's important is enhancing the comfort living in urban areas by implementing measures under the "safe town" concept," he told reporters after attending a Chinese New Year open house hosted by Sabah MCA.

Ong who is also MCA president, also called on local authorities to enhance their delivery system, especially in dealing with the public.

"Since local authorities come under the purview of state governments, I hope state governments will monitor their delivery system for the good of all," he added.

Also holding open house are Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) at Airport View Hotel and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) at Likas sports complex multipurpose hall.

Wednesday February 8, 2006
By RUBEN SARIO

KOTA KINABALU: The skyline here is undergoing rapid transformation amid measures to reduce traffic congestion as the state capital gears up to celebrate the sixth year of its city status.

The federal administration complex and the multi-storey Inland Revenue Board state headquarters are set to open their doors soon.

Workers are putting the finishing touches on the second phase of the Api Api shopping centre in the downtown area and construction is underway at another five complexes scheduled for completed over the next four years.

terminal.

The five shopping centres under construction are 1Borneo, Star City, KK Times Square, KK Mega Mall and Harbour Square.

Construction is also ongoing at the Warisan Square shopping centre apart from the Sabah Land and Survey building near Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the state Umno headquarters fronting the coastal highway.

A flyover is under construction at the Karamunsing junction and City Hall officials are already talking about the need for at least another three flyovers over the next five years.

City Hall planning director Alijus Sipil said the additional flyovers were needed in Tanjung Aru, the Wisma Perkasa roundabout and the Jalan Kolam-Jalan Lintas junction.

City Hall officials are mapping out plans for a light rail transit system linking the downtown area to the Kota Kinabalu indutrial park in the north, sections of Jalan Tuaran and Kepayan in the south.

For now, city hall is relocating outstation public transport vehicles, such as express buses and chartered vehicles, from the vacant space adjacent to Padang Merdeka to Inanam and Tanjung Aru to ease congestion in the city centre.

City officials, however, agreed to postpone the relocation to Tanjung Aru railway terminal of buses serving the interior and southern routes including Papar, Sipitang and Lawas in northern Sarawak .

Sabah zoo taking shape
Tuesday February 21, 2006
By RUBEN SARIO

KOTA KINABALU: After nearly a decade in the making, Sabah’s first zoo has taken shape with a collection of unique animals including the Borneo pygmy elephant and proboscis monkey.

Sabah Zoological and Botany Park at Lok Kawi, 15km from the state capital, is likely to be opened by the middle of this year.

“There are some more things to be done but work on preparing the zoo and its exhibits have turned out very well,” State Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Karim Bujang said.

Located on an 113ha site, the zoo features viewing platforms for elephants, orang utan, wild buffalo, proboscis monkeys, tigers and binturong or local wild cats.

The zoo to be operated by Sabah Wildlife Department is also equipped with an aviary featuring dozens of local bird species including the colourful hornbill.

Among those who toured the zoo recently were Putatan MP Datuk Marcus Mojigoh who suggested that the facility be opened on a trial basis to get public feedback.

After spending more than two hours walking around the zoo with department director Mahedi Andau and his deputy Laurentius Ambu, Marcus suggested a children’s park to make it more attractive for families.

“This will encourage more families to visit the zoo,” he said, adding that the department should provide adequate information on the animals.

KK mayor: Let’s green the capital
Friday February 24, 2006
By NORMIMIE DIUN

KOTA KINABALU: Let’s do it together. That is the message Mayor Datuk Illiyas Ibrahim has for city folk on efforts to make the state capital greener.

He said residents of housing estates and students in particular, could play their part by planting more decorative trees and shrubs in their respective areas.

“I believe our housing estates will be more pleasant places to live in if all houseowners do their part in keeping the compounds and areas outside their fences neat and clean,” he said during a ceremony to plant 315 trees at Rainforest Park here last week.

He said that schools could do their part in the city's beautification, noting that the SMK Sanzac secondary school at Sembulan near here was awarded the top prize at a national-level landscaping competition last year.

“It is my hope that other schools can follow the example set by SMK Sanzac and together we can make our city greener,” Illiyas added.

He said he was also pleased the city had set a record on Feb 15 when 17,880 people planted 48,000 hibiscus trees in 15 minutes.

“This feat shows that people of Kota Kinabalu are united and co-operating in making our city a better place to live in,” Illiyas added.

Aussie city keen to learn from KK’s tourism success
Saturday February 25, 2006

KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu’s tourism success has caught the attention of an Australian city official.

Rockingham mayor Barry Sammels is keen to learn from Kota Kinabalu City administrators on their secrets in making the city a successful tourist destination.

“We want to learn from Kota Kinabalu on its success and gain from its expertise in tourism marketing and infrastructure development,” said Sammels.

Rokingham is about 47km southwest of Perth.

Rockingham and Kota Kinabalu were geographically similar with beaches and natural assets, he said, but the 87-year-old city remained relatively “new” in development of tourism.

Sammels, who led an eight-member delegation to Sabah where he met Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Illiyas Ibrahim, said he was impressed by approaches taken by City Hall in developing Sabah’s capital into a major tourism hub.

“It is a beautiful city, the weather is good, the hotels are beautiful and there are so many things for tourists to do here. This is exactly how we intend to promote tourism in Rockingham,” he added.

Both Sammels and Iliyas, in their discussions earlier this week, exchanged information on social impact, business development, infrastructure planning, service delivery, health and waste management and re-cycling.

Facelift in the offing for City Ferry Terminal
Roy Goh
KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, Sat.

Once described as an eyesore, the City Ferry Terminal here looks set to be a tourist attraction that will be the envy of many.

By the middle of the year, it will have a new look at a cost of RM5 million and will be called Jesselton Point.

There will be a museum, retail outlets, restaurants and recreational facilities such as an indoor futsal centre at the terminal. Passenger services are also being upgraded.

The facelift for the area came about when public listed company Suria Capital Holdings took over the management of all port operations in the State through its subsidiary, Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd.

Suria Bumiria managing director Zainie Abdul Aucasa said Jesselton Point was the immediate phase of the proposed Jesselton Waterfront project.

Raleigh International Malaysia country director Rory Hall said the support was crucial for the success of their expeditions.

Raleigh International, Shell Malaysia, WWF-Malaysia and Kooperasi Pelancongan are partners in constructing an eco-camp to assist the local community at Kampung Batu Puteh, in the Lower Kinabatangan region, to be involved in eco-tourism activities.

Shell Malaysia's head of corporate affairs and government relations (Sabah and Labuan) Lucy Irene Yong, said they were happy to support the expeditions.

About 100 participants aged between 17 to 25 years from five countries including Malaysia will work on eight different communities in environmental and adventure-based projects across Sabah over a 10-week period later this year.

The projects were designed to challenge participants to gain new skills while benefiting communities or groups with identified needs.

The participants will live in the community while fostering opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

Sabah cops to keep tabs on poultry movement
Wednesday March 1, 2006

KOTA KINABALU: All district police offices in Sabah have been directed to monitor the entry of fowls from neighbouring countries to prevent the spread of the H5N1 strain of bird flu into the state.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Mangsor Ismail said checks would be conducted at all entry points into the state, including illegal routes and small tracks in the border areas.

He said police had identified all locations including the illegal routes and small tracks along the Malaysia-Kalimantan border, especially near Keningau, which might be used to smuggle fowls.

He was speaking to reporters after witnessing the handing over of duties to the new Kota Kinabalu City Police Chief Acting ACP Shah Gzali Khan Shahadad from the acting city police chief Supt Wong Chong Foon here on Monday.

Mangsor also said that a massive operation against illegal immigrants would be launched soon.

However, he said, operations against illegal immigrants would continue to be carried out by the police at the district level.

He said some 100,000 illegals are estimated to be in the state

Shah Gzali, in his speech, pledged to make the city a safe and comfortable place for locals and foreign tourists.

He was formerly the police chief for Kuala Langat in Selangor. –Bernama

according to wikipedia the population of kota kinabalu including surrounding urban areas is around 900,000. they probably included surrounding towns like putatan, sabindo, donggongon, inanam, etc. while official figures for just the city itself would be only about 400,000. if this is right, KK would be the 3rd largest urban centre in m'sia, behind KL and JB.

maybe it is true that kk have a population +/-900 000 including the surrounding area, or it is the population the residency of pantai barat, where the kk located.but in fact of it is 3rd largest urban, i think not realy true.in fact refer to KPKT, klang valley has 4.5millions, penang 1.6millions, jb( including skudai, pasir gudang, senai and other jb district area )1.3 millions, kinta valley (ipoh) 1.1 millions and kuching( including kuching city, petra jaya, padawan until damai/santubong, bau/sematan also kota samarahan) almost a million. in hierarchy 5 malaysia biggest urban population is klang valley, penang, jb, ipoh then kuching. then, kk maybe at the 6th place.

Kota Kinabalu A Port Of Call Of Star Cruises

SINGAPORE, March 3 (Bernama) -- Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, will be one of Star Cruises' new ports of call from the middle of this year.

Two of Star Cruises luxury ships, SuperStar Virgo and SuperStar Gemini, will call at Kota Kinabalu from May, Star Cruises General Manager Michael Goh said Friday.

"Both the ships have proven to be very popular with the Asian, Australasian and European markets," Goh said an exclusive presentation on "Sabah, the Land Below the Wind", here.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat, who is Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, launched the event on board SuperStar Virgo at the Harbour Front.

The 13-deck SuperStar Virgo of classical and Mediterranean design will embark on a special departure to Kota Kinabalu on June 4 with a five-night Redang-Kota Kinabalu cruise, while SuperStar Gemini -- the luxury 400-cabin cruiseliner -- will call there from May, offering seven-night and 21-night cruises through August.

Both ships carry more than 300,000 passengers a year comprising many inbound tourists to Singapore, taking a cruise from here to visit neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Thailand.

"Visitors to Sabah will now get to enjoy a totally new holiday experience as they can cruise in comfort and style to explore the many wonderful sights that Kota Kinabalu has to offer," said Goh.

Today's event also saw the signing of an agreement by four parties -- Sabah Tourism Board, Singapore's insurance co-operative NTUC Income, Star Cruises and Sabah-based tour agency Carlota's Borneo -- to promote Sabah as a tourist destination.

NTUC Income's chief executive officer Tan Kin Lian, said: "NTUC Income will work closely with our partners to draw up attractive travel packages for our policyholders and union members. NTUC Income offers more than insurance. We look for ways to offer special benefits to our members."

The insurance co-operative has 1.5 million policyholders and union members.

Present as the guest of honour at today's event was Singapore's Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Lim Boon Yang.

Remove eyesore, KK mayor tells cops

Kota Kinabalu Hyatt Regency Hotel General Manager Franz Mascarenhas

Tower (background) area during the gotong royong.

KOTA KINABALU: Accident vehicles left “abandoned” just outside the Kota Kinabalu police station are an eyesore near one of the city’s landmarks - the Atkinson’s Clock Tower.

The city administrators now want the police to remove the “abandoned” vehicles left strewn along Jalan Padang Merdeka in the town centre as soon possible because the eyesore gave a wrong impression to tourist visiting the century-old clock tower.

“This (abandoned cars) is not good for our efforts to build Kota Kinabalu City into a clean and beautiful city,” Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim said during a gotong royong-styled clean up at the clock tower on the foot of Signal Hill here.

Iliyas was prompted to call on the police to clear off the vehicles after he spotted a homeless woman in her 20s sleeping inside one of the cars oblivious to the dozens of volunteers turning up in the area to clean up the tower.

“Look at this girl sleeping comfortably inside the car, if we let it go on, I fear these cars will be used by drug addicts,” Iliyas told reporters covering the event.

Policemen at the gotong royong said that the woman was believed to be a beggar with mental problems. She had been arrested at least 10 times by police in past but kept coming back to the spot.

Iliyas, a retired Sabah police commissioner, said that he would bring the matter up with state police chief Datuk Mangsor Ismail to find ways to remove the vehicles.

The police station itself is housed inside a congested colonial building next to the clock tower.

Iliyas, meanwhile, urged people to help in keeping the city clean as the task could not be left to the city administrators alone.

He said the city spent about RM5mil annually on garbage collection and keeping the strets clean.

Hello, Am planning to climb Mt. Kinabalu with Kids. Any advice on how to best achieve this? Good tour companies to recommend? Also understand that there is now a jetboat service, is this any fun?

I havent climb the mt myself but friends that have, say that it is a strenuous climb & one has to be fit, takes 4 to 6 hrs from the Park Hq to the overnite resthouse climbing all the way & then start very early 2.30am or so to get to summit to see the sunrise. May not be suitable for preteens or elderly. it also gets very cold & the altitude can cause nausea & breathlessness. my friends climbing experiences have all been favorable & they enjoyed the adventure

if you dont really exercise regularly, i suggest u start doing a bit of stamina training for about 3-4 weeks before climbing. like for 2-4 times a week. do stuff like jogging. trekking hills, etc. this way u may not have to struggle too much when climbing the mountain, which means u can enjoy more.

i dunno about bringing kids along. maybe best to leave them at the chalets at National Park if they are like below 10 or if they are not used to much physical outings.

Kota Kinabalu indeed a very nice place to visit, very beutiful beaches. With demand increasing of tourist perhaps the economy groeth rapidly too. I see that Bornoe Island(sabah n sarawak) a lil bit behind but that doesn't mean something can't be done. Here my idea, Sabah need a dozen highrises and more modern low rise building. See, if we put low rise and high rise together in a single city in Sabah, it looks real great. The city itself shouldn't be dense but expand, the high rise may be a lil bit far apart and the gap can fill up with low rise, than the ground level will be the walk, nightlife etc. Need a lot of works to do so............

AFL
March 22nd, 2006, 01:30 PM
I dont like KK having so many high rises like the ones in Klang Valley because it will obstruct the surrounding views...medium sized apartments (two to three stories - like the ones in Australia) and single houses might still do...and yes, the city should probably not be dense but expand... but it maybe hard for town planners (i think) because KK sits on a narrow plain with moutains in the east and the open sea at the west...

I admire high rise buildings but they have pros and cons. Highrise buildings save a lot of space and those spaces could be use for other purposes like parks or replanting trees but they also obstruct views.
Well, whatver works for Kota Kinabalu.

Squatters glad to be moving to Maang, seek acceptance

March 28, 2006
By Jaswinder Kaur

KOTA KINABALU, SABAH: Twenty-year-old Hairul Armas remembers moving into the family’s wooden house in Sri Tanjung more than 10 years ago.

It was located next to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, so it took them a long time to adjust to the noise of aircraft, Hairul said.

Now, after getting used to the sound of planes taking off and landing, Hairul and some 2,000 other residents who have been squatting on government land will have to move to make way for the extension of the airport.

He said government officers tagged his house for the relocation exercise about three months ago.

He had no objections, he said, as it was the Government’s decision and the land did not belong to squatters. Neither is he perturbed by reports that Kampung Maang residents are protesting the decision to relocate the squatters to their village.

"The people at the village we are scheduled to move to should respect the Government’s decision," said Hairul, a hotel waiter.

Hairul’s father retired from the state civil service after having served as a driver. He decided to squat on government land after he had to move out of his government quarters.

Several other squatters echoed Hairul, saying no one should dispute the Government’s directive for squatters to move to Maang.

They also feared the people of Maang were under the impression that all squatters at Sri Tanjung were illegal immigrants.

Hujaimah Habidul, 37, who works at a school canteen, said there were illegals in the area, but most residents were Malaysians.

"It is sad that we are made to look like illegals. Police and Immigration officers come here regularly to track down illegals," she said.

Her neighbour, Salim Salin, 44, said he brought his family to live at Sri Tanjung in 1991 as he could no longer afford paying rent on his small salary as a civil servant. Salim, a Bajau from Kota Belud, now runs a tuck shop at Sri Tanjung, and has been following media reports on the relocation closely.

"I was one of the first to move here and although it will be sad to leave, it is good for us to have a home on gazetted land. We cannot continue squatting forever," he said.

The squatters felt there was a need for politicians and residents at Maang to better understand the need for the relocation.

The controversy arose when the Government announced that the Sri Tanjung squatters would move to Maang, a predominantly Kadazandusun settlement, to make way for the extension of the airport.

More tourism projects for Beaufort
Wednesday March 29, 2006

BEAUFORT: The Sabah government will intensify tourism development programmes in the Beaufort parliamentary constituency, especially at the Pulau Tiga resort in Kuala Penyu known for its volcanic mud pool, under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP)

Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Azizah Mohamad Dun said the projects planned included a bridge across Sungai Situmpoh to link Kampung PaluPalu and Pekan Kuala Penyu.

She said the bridge would shorten the travel distance by land from the state capital to Kuala Penyu via Membakut and Kampung Pimping, before a boat is taken to Pulau Tiga.

“With the construction of the bridge, more people will go to Pulau Tiga,” she said.

She welcomed investors keen to set up resorts in the coastal areas of Menumbok, Tanjung Aru and Tampurung.

Azizah, who is also Beaufort MP, said that efforts would be made to beautify Beaufort to be a stopover town serving tourists from Brunei and Sarawak travelling to Kota Kinabalu.

She said that Beaufort could also be promoted for ecotourism, especially Klias which had the proboscis monkeys. – Bernama

Relocation for half of squatters near airport
Friday April 7, 2006
By RUBEN SARIO

KOTA KINABALU: The state cabinet is sticking to its decision to relocate squatters near Kota Kinabalu International Airport despite objections raised by villagers in Penampang.

However, only half of the original number of 2,000 squatters will be moved, in a unanimous decision made by the Cabinet attended by all ministers.

Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said those relocated to state land near Kampung Maang were Malaysians of Kadazandusun, Bajau, Brunei, Bisaya, Suluk and Bugis origins.

“We will relocate half of the squatters to the site and the others to other locations,” Musa said.

Their protest since last month has drawn the Malaysian Human Rights Commission whose Commissioner Datuk Dr Hamdan Adnan stated the Kampung Maang villagers had grounds for their stand.

Explaining that the relocation site was neither a forest reserve nor encroaching into Kampung Maang, Musa said the state had bought the 622ha from a private company for RM5.5mil in 1979.

He said the land was earmarked for resettlement while other portions had been allocated to, among others, the Montfort Boys Town, a bird sanctuary and a zoo, with a portion set aside as kampung reserve.

“We will carry out the relocation as soon as possible so that work on the airport extension can start immediately,” added Musa.

High-tech telecom facilities for KK mall
Monday April 17, 2006

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s largest shopping centre, the 1 Borneo Hypermall, will be equipped with a RM2.4mil state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure.

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) signed a deal with the mall’s developer Sagajuta (Sabah) Sdn Bhd for the provision of the equipment here recently.

Among the infrastructure to be installed are closed-circuit television linked to a broadband network for surveillance and other broadband related services like voice and data.

TM chief operating officer (retail) Datuk Adnan Rofiee said that sufficient coverage of the cellular network provided by TM subsidiary Celcom (M) Bhd was also included.

In the future, when the 3G (third generation) mobile telecommunication services are extended to Sabah, TM would ensure availability of the latest network coverage, he told reporters after signing a contract on the deal.

Adnan said, in terms of technology, TM would bring the latest products enjoyed by its customers in Kuala Lumpur and the Multimedia Super Corridor to Sabah.

Sagajuta managing director Raymond Chan said TM was chosen because it had the expertise and financial capability to complete the job and the company had faith in the telecommunications giant to handle infrastructure work on its projects.

He said that the foundation work on the RM1bil mall which integrates shopping, dining and leisure experience in Jalan Sulaman here had been completed and the building was expected to be ready by the end of 2007.

Accor's 700 rooms deal
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's tourism industry received a shot in the arm Wednesday when one of the world's largest hotel companies, the Accor Group, formalised its entry into the hotel and hospitality sector by signing agreements to operate, not one but two hotels here.

Accor would be operating the Novotel at 1 Borneo along Jalan Sulaman and the Mercure at the soon-to-be-completed Warisan Square right in the heart of the city.

Both four-star rated hotels would add more than 700 rooms to the State, which is in need of another 3,000 rooms to cater to the increasing tourist arrivals.

The Novotel is Accor's renowned business class hotel, which represents value and consistency aimed at the corporate, conference, incentive and leisure market, while the Mercure is part of Accor's range of city hotels, apartment hotels and resorts.

The 15-storey hotel in 1 Borneo would comprise some 500 rooms and would be called Novotel 1 Borneo, incorporating many of the latest Novotel design features, including the innovative BIZ Executive Floor and BIZ Lounge concepts.

It would also feature a coffeehouse and one speciality restaurant, lobby lounge and bar, a 1,300 seating capacity ballroom, four adjacent meeting rooms, rooftop infinity pool, fitness centre and spa as well as a kids club.

Accor signed the agreement to operate Novotel 1 Borneo with the hypermall developer, Sagajuta (Sabah) Sdn Bhd.

The Mercure hotel in Warisan Square (located just behind Centre Point) would be known as the Mercure Waterfront and is expected to open in December.

It would have 212 spacious guest rooms and fitted with the most modern trappings and amenities, including two meeting rooms, a trendy international restaurant, a rooftop caf?and bar, a coffeehouse, a lobby lounge and bar, a rooftop infinity pool with swim-up bar, fitness centre and state-of-the-art spa and a business centre.

Accor signed the agreement for the Mercure Waterfront with Merjuta Sdn Bhd. Witnessing the signing ceremony at the BED in the Waterfront here Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister-cum-Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat described the event as "very exciting".

"They have made the right partnership. This is what I am excited about. Today the top (hotel) group in Europe together with friends who I know can make things happen in Sabah," he said.

Chong said the new hotels augured well with the development of the tourism industry in the State. With the completion of the RM1 billion expansion and upgrading project of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport he believed "the sky is the limit" as far as tourism is concerned. "This is something that we are raring to go," he said, adding that he told both Sagajuta and Merjuta to make it happen fast "because I need it tomorrow".

He said the State needs all types of hotels from the five-star facility right down to the bed and breakfast lodges as well as boutique hotels (between 20 and 30 rooms) not only in the city but also outside.

On the issue of condominiums being turned into service apartments, Chong said it would not be a problem if done properly and professionally.

Signing both the agreements for Accor were its Vice President, Operations, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Philippines, Patrick Basset and Vice President, Development Asia, Victor Pang.

Representing Sagajuta were Managing Director/Executive Chairman, Raymond Chan and Director, Tan Tiang Lai, while in the second ceremony for the Mercure Waterfront, Merjuta Sdn Bhd was represented by Director, Francis Wong and Raymond Chan who is also a Director.

Witnessing the signing between Sagajuta and Accor was Warisan Harta Sabah Sdn Bhd, Chief Executive Officer, Rahman Ghani, while N.K Foo was the witness at the signing between Merjuta and Accor.

Warisan Harta is the co-developer for 1 Borneo and the developer of Warisan Square.

Meanwhile, Basset said it was not coincidence that Accor decided to venture here as studies conducted in the past two years by them showed the city is among the rapid growing tourism markets in the region.

Accor operates 269 hotels in the Asia Pacific comprising nearly 50,000 rooms and it is the largest in the Asia Pacific region.

He said Accor was also happy with the comfort and hospitality of the locals here that he said can be tapped by them in ensuring the hotels success.

The Novotel 1 Borneo and Mercure Waterfront would be Accor's fourth and fifth hotels in Malaysia with the others being in Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur and Kuching.

According to him, Accor Group would not be investing anything in the ventures and would only act as the operator responsible for defining the products, sales and marketing, especially on the international end, which is their forte and also staff training.

Basset concurred with Chong that the demand for hotels here would be strong as more regional airlines are launching their services into Sabah.

For Chan, the ceremony was significant as "it symbolises the beginning of yet another milestone in the development of 1 Borneo".

Merjuta Director, Francis Wong said the Warisan Square project had won the hearts of many investors and buyers.

"As part of our commitment to bring in international players into the scene, we are pleased and honoured to be in partnership with Accor to establish Mercure Waterfront, Kota Kinabalu, a brand that has the largest hotel marketing network in the world," he said.

"We are confident that they will have a positive impact on the hotel and the tourism industry in Sabah," he said.

Some 500 players from the travel industry attended the ceremony that was emceed by Mahadzir Lokman.

KOTA KINABALU: An extravaganza packaged to showcase Sabah’s cultural diversity is paying dividends.

The Sabah Fest, a week- long event of cultural shows and exhibitions, is now a hit among foreign tourists.

The opening ceremony on Friday night was testimony to this as more than half of the 2,000 people at the Sutera Harbour Resort (www.suteraharbour.com/) were foreigners.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah opened the event. Also present were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat.

The annual Sabah Fest, first held in 1998, is on the first weekend of May in conjunction with the month-long Kaamatan harvest festival.

British backpacker James Linton described the opening ceremony as spectacular.

"You don’t get to see this kind of show very often, at least not where I come from," said Linton, who came to Sabah to climb Mount Kinabalu.

"Our host (at a backpacker’s lodge) told us about the show and we came in a group. It’s a real treat."

Sabah Tourism Board de- puty chairman Datuk Sari Suhut said the festival was to provide visitors the opportunity to experience the State’s unique culture through dance performances and music.

"Visitors will also get to sample local delicacies and witness demonstrations by skilled handicraft makers."

The festival, he said, had over the years evolved into a strong marketing tool to promote tourism.

Sapangar Bay container port to be ready early 2007
May 8 2006
BusinessTimes

http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BT/Monday/Corporate/BT566106.txt/Article/Current_News/BT/Images/dailyn1/portbrahim.jpg

THE RM322.42 million Sapangar Bay container port at Kota Kinabalu that is being developed by Sabah Port Sdn Bhd, is now at the final stage of construction.

According to the chairman of Suria Capital Holdings Bhd, Tan Sri Ibrahim Menudin, it will be the first dedicated container terminal in Sabah with a shore-side quay crane operations. The terminal will be fully commissioned by early next year.

Suria Capital owns Sabah Port that operates seven port terminals in Sabah.

Once operational, it will be turned into a dedicated container hub, capable of handling two container vessels of up to 2,500 TEUs at one time and a container stacking area of 15ha.

Ibrahim said the port will further enhance its operational efficiency by upgrading port facilities while expanding capacity, investing in new and modern equipment.

For this purpose the group will be investing more than RM1 billion.

A total of RM485 million has been approved but not contracted out by the management for the purchase of various cargo handling equipment. In addition to that, RM608 million has been approved by the board for the improvement of seven ports' (Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu, Kudak, Kunak, Lahat Datu, Sapangar Bay and Sapoorna) infrastructure facilities.

The port expansion also takes into account the development of the state's palm oil industry.

To meet the industry needs, Sabah Ports is currently active in the extension works and development of new oil jetties for the state's Palm Oil Industrial Clusters (POICs) in Lahad Datu, Kunak and Sandakan.

Ports in Sabah not only hope to act as key entry and exit points for exports or imports for the state, they also have the potential to be transformed into transit points for goods coming from the neighbouring countries.

Being in the strategic location of the BIMP-EAGA region, Sabah ports can foster important trading links for the country and also for the region.

Meanwhile, in terms of throughput, total tonnage at the seven ports increased by 6.2 per cent to 26.16 million tonnes in 2005 from the year earlier.

The strong global demand for palm oil from Sabah continued to impact positively on the port activities during 2005.

Palm oil cargoes which passed through the ports, particularly in Lahad Datu, Sandakan and Kunak, posted a significant increase of 12 per cent from 5 million tonnes in 2004 to 5.6 million tonnes in 2005.

The commodity became the ports' main revenue earner during the year, making up about 28 per cent of the total cargoes handled in 2005. - PortsWorld

Accor to operate 2 hotels in Sabah
By Roy Goh
May 13 2006
BusinessTimes

THE economic growth potential in Sabah has caught the eye of Accor, the world's largest group operating in the hotel, tourism and corporate services sector.

Accor has signed a deal to operate two hotels, the Novotel at 1 Borneo and the Mercure at the soon-to-be-completed Warisan Square in Kota Kinabalu.

Both four-star hotels would add more than 700 rooms to the state, which is reportedly in need of another 3,000 rooms to cater for increasing tourist arrivals.

Accor recently signed the agreement to operate Novotel 1 Borneo with developer Sagajuta (Sabah) Sdn Bhd while the Mercure Waterfront, due to open in December this year, with Merjuta Sdn Bhd.

Witnessing the signing ceremony was Deputy Chief Minister-cum-Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat.

"They have struck the right partnership and I am excited about this. Today, the top (hotel) group in Europe together with friends, who I know can make things happen in Sabah," he said.

Chong said the new hotels augured well with the development of the tourism industry in the state and with the completion of the RM1 billion expansion and upgrading project of the Kota Kinabalu International Airport he believed "the sky is the limit" as far as tourism is concerned.

He said the state needs all types of hotels, from the five-star right down to the bed-and-breakfast lodges as well as boutique hotels (between 20 and 30 rooms).

Signing both the agreements for Accor were its vice president for operations (Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Philippines) Patrick Basset and vice president development (Asia) Victor Pang.

Representing Sagajuta were managing director/executive chairman Raymond Chan and director Tan Tiang Lai while Merjuta Sdn Bhd was represented by directors Francis Wong and Raymond Chan.

Accor operates 269 hotels in the Asia Pacific comprising nearly 50,000 rooms and it is the largest in Asia Pacific.

The Novotel 1 Borneo and Mercure Waterfront would be Accor's fourth and fifth hotels in Malaysia with the others in Johor Baru, Kuala Lumpur and Kuching.

WCT Land's RM196m project in Kota Kinabalu
19-05-2006
By Kevin Tan
THEEDGEDAILY

WCT Land Bhd will make its first foray out of the Klang Valley to Kota Kinabalu for a high-end residential project, with a gross development value (GDV) of RM196 million, said chief operating officer Lai Yeng Fock.

The location of the project, near Sutera Harbour, will cover 21.5 acres of leasehold land. The land cost is RM57 million and the purchase was given the shareholders’ approval at the AGM in Shah Alam on May 19.

Lai said the project would consist of detached villas, semi-detached villas and super-link houses. The project would be financed from its own funds and also bank borrowings.

The project is expected to start later this year and it would contribute to the company’s earning this year.

He said WCT Land is targetting the high-end buyers because of its proximity to Sutera Harbour which has marinas, hotels and golf courses.

On the on-going projects, he said they were the Bandar Bukit Tinggi 1 and 2 (GDV of RM2.7 billion) and Bandar Parklands in Klang (RM907 million).

Another project in the pipeline involves commercial and office buildings in Kelana Jaya, Petaling Jaya, with an estimated GDV of RM700 million. The project is awaiting approval.

On the outlook for property sector, he said demand was softening and “if we can maintain (the revenue) what we had achieved last year, it would be considered good”.

Last year, WCT Land reported a net profit of RM59.2 million, up 28% from the RM46.1 million in 2004. Revenue was RM323.7 million, up 6% from RM305.8 in 2004.

it depends what kind of stuff u are into. if u are lazy kind of person, maybe u can go to some islands and just relax there the whole day. the nearest islands are just off the citycentre, 20-40 mins boat ride: pulau sapi, manukan, etc. dont go to pulau gaya. they dont have laws over there  j/k. was dangerous before. mugging, etc. dunno bout now.

if u like a bit of an adventure: climb mt kinabalu, whitewater rafting, etc. more stuff if u willing to further away from kk, into other parts of sabah. mostly eco-tourism stuff, nature, etc.

kk city is also nice place. shopping: centrepoint, wisma merdeka, filipino market. nightlife is not so bad. more ... :)

The population of Sabah was 2,449,389 in the year 2000 (Housing Census of Malaysia, 2000), of which is divided into 32 officially recognized ethnic groups. The largest non-indigenous ethnic group is the Chinese, who make up for about 20% of Sabah's population. The largest indigenous ethnic group is the Kadazan-Dusun (roughly 25% of the total population); followed by the Bajau (15%), and the Murut (3%).

again, this data only refers to ethnicity...........well, since East Malaysia does have Good Friday holiday, while the West Malaysia doesn't have this......i think it may be around 30% ++

Less so in Sarawak as Malays in Sarawak contribute to 21% of state population and another 5% from some Melanau's (not all are muslims) and a few smaller indigenous group. So all in all about 25/27% in Sarawak. But I'm sure Sabahans and Sarawakians of all different races and religion live in peace and harmony.

14 base jumpers leap from 30-storey building
Sunday August 13, 2006
TheStar

KOTA KINABALU: Hundreds of people thronged Sabah’s tallest structure – the Menara Tun Mustapha – at Kuala Likas near here to witness base jumpers leaping from the 30-storey building and then making a graceful landing with their parachutes.

A total of 14 jumpers from Australia, Norway, Germany, the United States, New Zealand, Switzerland, Singapore, Finland and Malaysia took turns to leap off the Menara Tun Mustapha from 8.30am.

The event that ends today was preceded with a magavau, a traditional ritual blessing ceremony conducted by a Kadazandusun priestess on Friday.

“It was a beautiful experience. You can see the sea and Mount Kinabalu as you come down,” said Gary Cunningham, the technical director of the KL Tower International Jump, the event organiser.

The jump from the Menara Tun Mustapha kicked off a circuit of similar events that include Menara Pelita in Sarawak on Aug 14-17, Menara Alor Star in Kedah on Aug 17-18, and Menara KOMTAR in Penang on Aug 19-20.

The finale with be at the Menara Kuala Lumpur on Aug 26-27.

Menara Kuala Lumpur chief executive Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad said this was the first jump circuit being held that involved five states.

“I believe these jumps will be an extra challenge and test the jumpers mentally and physically,” he said.

Zulkifli later handed over a RM2,000 donation to the Bukit Harapan home.

Work on RM1.5bil waterfront project begins next year

http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/upload/210105la.jpg
Kota Kinabalu: The mammoth RM1.5 billion waterfront project - Jesselton Waterfront-KK City Centre - to be developed by Suria Capital Holdings Berhad is expected to start late next year.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said he was briefed about the project by Suria Capital's Chairman Tan Sri Ibrahim Menudin at the Wisma Kewangan, here, Thursday.

He was told the mega project on 23 acres at the present Sabah Ports Authority (SPA) site in Tanjung Lipat would start once the Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB), a subsidiary of Suria Capital, moved operations to the Sepanggar Port.

"I advised them that they must synchronise the development with other coastal developments," he said, when met after the briefing.

The project, expected to be completed within 20 years, would see hotels and various facilities set up as well as impressive buildings fronting the City's waterfront.

Earlier, Musa who is Finance Minister, witnessed the Co-operation Agreement signing ceremony between SPSB and the Sabah Timber Industries Association (STIA) to streamline stevedoring activities and enhance port operations in Sabah.

SPSB and STIA were making a joint effort to streamline stevedoring activities in relation to timber and timber-related products at midstream throughout Sabah by the registration of all the stevedoring contractors and company by SPSB.

SPSB hoped that with the arrangement, the company would be able to provide better service to its customers.

SPSB took over the management, operations and maintenance of port services and facilities of the seven ports in Sabah following the Privatisation Agreement signed between the State Government and Sabah Ports Authority (SPA) in Sept 1, 2004.

Signing for SPSB was Ibrahim and Managing Director, Haji Abu Bakar Abas, while STIA was represented by its President Datuk James Hwong, Deputy President Chua Yeong Perng and Vice-President See Yu Siong.

O dear! The merchants aren't going to be happy with that at all!

Removal of parking spaces is usually a very unpopular decision that gets lots of people REALLY upset in a hurry! :bash:

So let's hope this will be temporary, eh? The developer, who should benefit enormously from his project, ought to be made to build replacement parking as part of his permit.

Kota Kinabalu: Work on the multi-million ringgit KK Mega Mall at the Maksak area in Likas will commence after the Chinese New Year celebration following the approval of its Development Plan (DP) and Building Plan (BP) recently.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/eyeofheaven/030206la.jpg

Developer Ideal Prestige Sdn Bhd's Executive Director, Robert Ling Tiong Chai, said so far about 60 per cent of the commercial lots of the development had been snapped up.

Announcing this during the Chinese New Year gathering at the KK Mega Mall office site on Thursday, Liong said they had also sealed a multi-million ringgit joint-venture deal with a Foochow group here and China to build three blocks of condominiums comprising 360 units.

In addition, another five blocks of condominiums are also planned in the vicinity of the KK Mega Mall's 18.5-acre site, he said, adding this feature is expected to generate more interest from investors to the project.

He said KK Mega Mall is not only set to become the city's latest commercial hub but also set a new trend for shopping malls in the country as it would be designed based on the "all-on-ground floor" international concept when completed by end of next year.

To be built roughly on an area the size of 10 football fields that surrounds the Maksak Hall and office, a 12-storey 200 room budget hotel and office block as well as a Maksak Cultural Museum are also expected to come up.

In this respect, the project is a joint-venture with landowner, Maksak (Sabah Civil Service Recreational Council) while the main contractor is Transpakat Sdn Bhd.

The all-on-ground-floor concept was based on the new international shopping mall trend such as those in Australia, USA, Canada and New Zealand where malls are built on one floor for convenient, comfort and friendly shopping.

"Customers shopping at KK Mega Mall do not have to take the trouble of going up and down escalators or climb the stairs," he said.

There would be two atriums covering a total floor area of 15,000 sq ft at the centre of the mall to cater to special performances, product promotions and competitions, among others.

With the retail units, supermarket, fast food centres, food courts, departmental stores and amusement centres all located at the ground floor, KK Mega Mall will provide for about 1,250 car parking lots on the first floor.

Another unique feature will be a 1,400 feet long and 40 feet wide boulevard outside the mall resembling the Bintang Walk in Kuala Lumpur.

"We are confident that KK Mega Mall will become the commercial hub for the city due to its strategic location, which is near schools, residential areas and right in the middle of the highway from the east and north areas," said Liong.

Also on hand were Ideal Prestige General Manager, K.P Fung and Transpakat Executive Director, Arthur Wong Nyuk Kian.

today's news..... got it at Daily Express

RM350m Sabah submarine base soon
Kota Kinabalu: The construction of a submarine base under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) costing RM350 million is expected to start early next year, Region 2 Naval Commander, Rear Admiral Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin said.

"The decision will be made before the end of the year and construction will begin early next year," he said, adding that the construction was expected to take two years.

Speaking after witnessing an anti-terrorism training session involving the Naval Special Force of the RMN here Tuesday, he said, the base would be equipped with a training complex, living quarters, simulator, and supporting infrastructure for submarines.

The submarines ordered by Malaysia from France, costing RM3.5 billion are expected to be based at the new complex in 2008 and would start operations in 2009, he said.

The Navy planned to upgrade the Naval Special Force under the 9MP with diving equipments, and special weapons to make the elite force more effective, Ahmad Kamarulzaman added.

During the training Tuesday, 28 members of the Force were "involved" in rescuing some kidnapped people with the use of helicopters and boats.

Ahmad Kamarulzaman also said, the Royal Malaysian Air Force also took part in the training. - Bernama

I've saw this news at www.dailyexpress.com.my

Solve worsening traffic woes in Inanam: DAP

Kota Kinabalu: DAP on Wednesday urged the authorities to solve the worsening traffic congestion in Inanam, including opening up new roads as planned in the Kota Kinabalu Master Development Plan.

Its Kota Kinabalu Branch chief, Dr Hiew King Cheu, said the Public Works Department (PWD) and City Hall as well as other authorities must look into the matter urgently since the people, especially residents, have to bear the brunt each day.

"We have received numerous complaints that the traffic jam situation in Inanam roundabout and entrance into Jalan Kiansom has become serious day by day, especially during rush hours," he said here Wednesday.

He said motorists sometime have to wait in the long queue for more than half an hour to get through, resulting in more fuel consumption and stress.

"Not long ago there was a road widening and upgrading for this area to improve the traffic congestion problem, but now this improvement seems to be not functioning. The whole Inanam town can be seen with vehicle jammed on the roads," he said.

In this respect, he said at least three "short-cut" roads could be built with a small budget.

DAP also proposed traffic lights be installed at the Jalan Bantayan-Jalan Kiansom junction near St Catherine's Church in order to improve the situation.

"If the Government cannot come up with funds, the DAP is willing to assist and coordinate in this matter, even to the extent of inviting sponsors or donors to help build these "short-cut " roads which are detailed in the master plan," he said.

He said the matter had become very pressing and it that it was time for the authorities to act.

"The local YBs should not ignore the fact that they are also one of the people affected by the traffic jam," he said.

More vehicles are going into the area due to the completion of several new housing estates and Inanam has also become an industrial centre.

South Corridor's growth
Kota Kinabalu: A new landmark by Singapore-based Tarlia Enterprises Sdn Bhd will be shaping up in the Putatan area within three years and give impetus to development along the city's "south corridor".

Its Managing Director Chia Boon Tai said the One Place Mall project would be the first truly integrated shopping-cum-hotel complex to be constructed over 1.88 acres in Putatan from January next year and completed in 2009.

The RM100 million project is strategically located in the heart of Putatan town and will be the gateway to Kota Kinabalu city.

"The 10-storey project will become the first regional shopping mall in Putatan area that will have 195 retail units of various sizes and a 290-room 4-star hotel atop the mall plus nearly 400 parking bays inside the building.

"Actually it will be a two-storey shopping mall and one block for the hotel of six floors plus a 4-storey car park which interconnects the shopping lots and the hotel," he said.

Apart from these, Chia said there will be a multipurpose hall for exhibitions, meetings, concerts, weddings, banquets and bazaar events that will add vibrancy to the shopping mall.

He was speaking at the soft launch of the project at its sales office in Putatan Point, Thursday. Also present were company Chairman Ng Siow How and its General Manager, Terry Wong.

Chia said they intentionally designed the project to incorporate a hotel so as to meet the State's shortage of rooms for tourists and considering that it would take only about three minutes to reach the nation's second busiest airport that is currently being upgraded.

They expect tourist arrivals to grow tremendously once the airport expansion project is completed in 2009, the same year the integrated project is scheduled for completion.

According to him, 40 per cent of the units have been sold out to locals as they have yet to market the lots to foreign buyers.

As for the hotel, Chia said they are still deciding whether they should operate the 4-star hotel themselves or seek investors to run it.

"I was told that Putatan will become a full district in a few years and the area will be complemented by integrated tourist-related products along the seafront from Putatan up to the Lok Kawi area.

"That is why we are confident the project is a good investment in the Southern Corridor when looking at the master plan and also because there is no other shopping complex in the area," he said.

In fact, he said the project site is a very strategic for people from Sipitang, Beaufort, and Papar besides the Bruneians and Sarawakians to come and shop at the mall without experiencing traffic jams.

In another development, Chia also announced that the company will embark on another multi-million ringgit project related to tourism particularly in providing accommodation to tourists within the approved master plan for Putatan.

He said it would be an integrated project that will have resorts, seafront condominiums, and service apartments, among others to be built on a 75-acre land that will be reclaimed from the middle of next year.
