MachuPichu April 10th, 2005, 09:18 PM Coimbatore(also known as Kovai) is one of the most industrialised city in india, and fastest growing cities in India
Its well known for its textile ,auto ancillary, electric pumps& motors and various other engineering industries...
Situated at the foot hills of Nilgiris, it is known for its pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere, cosmopolitan outlook and private enterprise.
Never knew this city was this big. I was just there. Its extremely hot though. I just read Kamal Nath's notes on export growth. Going by what he says, if anything, this city should make its cityzens very rich indeed.
Only manufacturing and industrial production will alleviate the poverty of the millions. Services cannot do that. The negative side is manufaturing will bring with it a hefty amount of pollution and waste generation. I saw a BBC documentary where they showed the other side of Chinese industrialization. Bad rivers and water systems. I hope India goes the US way - responsible development - and not the China way - breeding environmental disasters.
Anniyan April 10th, 2005, 11:11 PM Apart from being a manufacturing and textile hub , covai is getting ready to be one of the IT city of India..
A host of top-rung IT firms, such as Wipro,Cognizant Technology Solutions, Spectramind,Infosys, 24/7 Customer, have already announced their expansion plans in Coimbatore.
Already, Tata Consultancy Service, e-Brahma, KG Infotech, Pricol Instruments and other smaller IT firms operate in Coimbatore
The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu, the nodal agency to coordinate IT investments in the state, is developing 40 acres of land in Coimbatore for setting up an Information Technology Park. The park would have a built up area of 2.50 lakh sq.metres
Advantages of Covai:
Coimbatore was well connected by air, rail and road. "Coimbatore is one of the few tier-2 cities with an international airport with reasonably good domesticconnections
Coimbatore enjoys the advantage of the presence of 19 engineering colleges in and around the city that churn out over 6000 engineers every year. The city also has over 70 arts and science colleges and 14 polytechnics

Chennai for IT and ITES. They dont want chennai to go in the lines of
bangalore which rightnow faces a crumbling infrastructure.
Coimbatore like Chennai has a lot of well established hospitals. Coimbatore-Tirupur-Erode-Salem belt is famous for textile exports with a lot of small scale industries.
Last but not the least Kovai has a wealth of well reputed engg. colleges and a great university.

vs007 July 11th, 2005, 12:53 AM I heard TCS, Cognizant and Wipro are all planning to set up shop in Coimbatore. Can somebody post any pictures of those if available? In general how is Coimbatore growing up in IT?
Anniyan July 11th, 2005, 12:58 AM welcome to SSC-India, hope u enjoy this forum
its nice to know that we are getting more covai forumers..and expecting more posts in this thread.
TCS already exists in covai , Cognizant and Wipro are planning to set up their own campus.
TN Govts Tech park in the line of tidel park is yet to start..
Cbeadmirer July 20th, 2005, 09:34 AM TCS, which had housed its operations in over 1.3 million sq. ft. across Chennai, planned to complete its Siruseri campus by the end of next financial year. The Chennai centre was planning to recruit 3,000 professionals in the current year and this would be part of the 13,500 people that TCS as a whole planned to recruit, he added. It was planning to expand its operations in Coimbatore in a big way, he added.

Cbeadmirer July 20th, 2005, 03:07 PM CHENNAI: The new facility US-based Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), on a sprawling 40,000 sq ft area, at Coimbatore, is scheduled to get operational in the next few weeks, a senior company official said on Wednesday.
Informing this at the sidelines of the NASSCOM HR Summit conference here, CTS Corporate Marketing and Communication Director, Mr R Ramkumar, said that about 400 software professionals had been identified to work at the new software development centre.
"In fact, so overwhelming has been the response, that we received twice our manpower requirement," he said.
He expressed surprise over the willingness shown by software professionals to move out of Chennai. Even from Kerala, considering the proximity of the Textile City, there had been a phenomenal response. Their in-house relocation programme had also worked, he added.
Were it not for the bomb blast incident, the complete infrastructure and climate advantage that Coimbatore had would have made it a popular IT destination, much ahead of other places, he said.
Currently, the Textile City is fast gaining prominence as an IT hub and with Industry bodies, such as the CII, working on the industrialisation of southern districts, Coimbatore is emerging as a tier-II IT destination.

Cbeadmirer July 22nd, 2005, 03:52 PM Interestingly, buyers are looking for great deals and money is not a constraint for them when it comes to purchasing IT goods. In fact, Coimbatore is one of the richest cities in the country and boasts of maximum number of Mercedes Benz plying on the city roads.
Coimbatore is set for another IT boom and the resellers should equip themselves to meet the market requirements.

Anniyan October 6th, 2005, 05:00 PM Tennessee medical transcription company will open an office in the southern Indian city of Coimbatore (koh-ihm-bah-TOHR')
It's the latest Western company expanding outside India's traditional outsourcing cities such as Bangalore.
Spheris Inc. of Franklin, Tennessee, has hired 300 people for its new center in Coimbatore, in India's southern Tamil Nadu state, and plans to add another 700 workers in the next year, company president and chief executive Steven Simpson told reporters.
Spheris employs 2,000 people doing the same work in the southern city of Bangalore, one of the hubs of India's outsourcing business, but decided to expand to Coimbatore because of the city's large untapped pool of skilled workers, he said.
"The city has a strong foundation in education and is inexpensive," he said of Coimbatore, a city of one million people 360 kilometers south of Bangalore.
Among the companies that have chosen to set up operations lesser-known Indian cities are Honeywell International Inc., which has an office in the southern city of Madurai.

On Tuesday, VDMA German Textile Machinery Association organised a textile technology symposium. "India is seen as a good and strong market," said Ragnar Strauch, Director, Export Marketing of the association.
For German textile machinery manufacturers, India is the fourth most important market and has the potential to move up to second place. Two German textile machinery manufacturers are planning to set up factories in the region.
China Texmatech Co. Ltd is planning to open an office here for after sales service and maintenance. Korean manufacturers held talks with about 90 entrepreneurs in a single day. At least 10 of them are to visit Korea shortly to finalise business deals.
New opportunities
For the textile units in the region, the phasing out of quotas has opened up a world of opportunities, and triggered a spurt in investment.

FOR ALL TO SEE: The site for the proposed multiplex on Avanashi Road
"I came here a few months ago. I like the people and the climate. It has vast business potential. But, there is a vacuum in the entertainment segment," says Vivek Agarwal, Chief Officer - Business Development (North) of E-City Entertainment.
Catering to people here with quality entertainment in a hygienic and pollution-free environment at a "very reasonable rate" is what Essel Group Enterprise aims at and has hence, come out with a multiplex proposal.
The plan is for a total built-up area of four lakh sq.ft on a 3.5 acre site on the Avinashi Road. The multiplex will have six cinema halls, food courts, games, shopping areas and health clubs. It will be a full family entertainment centre, points out Mr. Agarwal.
The project cost will be more than Rs. 50 crores and the civil works are expected to take off in another four months. It will be completed in a year from then. It will be a commercial hub and the initial investment by the space takers (shopping malls, food courts, etc) for their stocks is expected to be Rs. 400 crores.
Coimbatore is witnessing an economic boom and such projects will only give a thrust to the growth. However, building plan approvals need to be expedited for such projects so that more such initiatives are encouraged, adds K. Viswanathan, the local consultant for the project.
"It will be a landmark for Tamil Nadu," says Mr. Agarwal about the project and the company is looking at similar projects in Tiruchi and Madurai.

greatshankar December 21st, 2005, 03:50 PM Coimbatore gradually emerging as an IT hub
Coimbatore, a manufacturing hub for textile machinery, foundries is looking to attract Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology enabled Services (ITES) companies. At present, Coimbatore has been able to attract only a few software and Business Process Outsourcing companies. Per industry watchers, Coimbatore has intrinsic strengths like sound infrastructure and a domestic airport, which should help it to emerge as Tamil Nadu’s second most important IT destination in the near future.
Till date, three IT Parks have come up in Coimbatore. All the three have been promoted by engineering colleges on their respective campuses. Meanwhile, ETL Infrastructure Services has proposed the construction an IT Park on Avinashi Road. Spread out over an area of 14 acres, the Park will be built on an investment of Rs 140 crore. To be erected in phases, the first stage will see about 8 lakh sq ft of built-up-space being added out of a total proposed area of approximately 16 lakh sq ft. In a related development, additional land for a software park to be promoted by Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu has been procured. A public-private partnership model is soon to be organised to implement the project.
Coimbatore seems to be finally seeing IT-led activity in office real estate. Four months ago, Cognizant Technologies leased 40,000 sq ft space of the one-lakh sq ft software park promoted by Kumaraguru College of Technology. Looks like IT realty may finally become a reality for this southern city.
Chennai_Forever December 22nd, 2005, 02:11 AM Spurt in Air Traffic
Coimbatore: Over the last four years, the Coimbatore Airport has witnessed a phenomenal spurt in air traffic, which is almost thrice the number of landings and take-offs that it had in 2001, when the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was entrusted with the task of airport security. Till then, the local police were in charge of airport security.
Prior to the induction of CISF, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BACS), Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the CISF surveyed the number of aircraft movements and passenger traffic to assess the scale of security that Coimbatore Airport required. In 2001, when the survey was done, Coimbatore Airport had only 41 aircraft movements including six international flights (landing and take-off) a week.
The CISF led by a Deputy Commandant and Assistant Commandant was inducted into airport security with a staff strength of 127 personnel. Now, there are six airliners operating services to and from Coimbatore and one of them has made Coimbatore the hub. The AAI carried out its runway expansion work. .
The Coimbatore Airport is linked to Kozhikode, Kochi, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad besides weekly thrice international service to Sharjah.

Coimbatore: The revenue administration on Wednesday commenced a drive against encroachments along the Noyyal river from its origination point at Solai Padugai, near Chadivayal.
The revenue authorities have joined hands with the Public Works Department (the custodian of this water course) and Siruthuli (a public initiative to conserve water bodies and waterways).
Noyyal begins at the culminating point of Chinnaru and Periyaru at Solaipadugai and runs through the revenue districts of Coimbatore and Erode. The 80-km-long flow of Noyyal through Coimbatore till Mannarai is expected to fill water bodies in the district. Siruthuli recently conducted a Noyyal yatra to awaken the public on the need to protect the river.
On the first day of the drive, the authorities were able to recover 3.5 acres along the river, which was used for cultivating coconut, arecanut, plantains and turmeric.
The value of land is close to Rs. 2.5 to Rs. 3 lakhs an acre, the officials pointed out. The authorities had not come across any civil structures so far. The PWD authorities said the cost involved for the drive was Rs. 20 crores.

MP seeks special plan to develop Coimbatore
`City emerging as a hub of domestic, international trade'
Coimbatore: The Member of Parliament for Coimbatore K. Subbarayan has sought a Special Project Plan for the infrastructure development of Coimbatore.
In a memorandum to the Prime Minister, he contended that it was a "compelling need" because the city was "emerging as a successful hub of domestic as well as international trade".
Mr. Subbarayan submitted that Coimbatore had been a centre of world trade for long. The high concentration of cotton spinning mills, which earned it the title `Manchester of South India', resulted in a number of ancillary industries too.
Now the district had around 4,000 registered factories, 300 large and medium units, thousands of small scale and cottage industries, besides several village and agro-based units. "About 60 per cent of the pumps used in India are supplied from here as also 40 per cent of motors and auto parts."
He pointed out that the industry here had shown remarkable resilience to face the global crisis and policy changes by adapting to them and through intrinsic innovation. It recorded annual earnings of Rs. 10,000 crores through exports last year.
The volume of software exports from here more than doubled this year. "It is the second largest Information Technology centre, only next to Chennai."
He also submitted that the recent survey conducted for the Confederation of Indian Industries had ranked Coimbatore fourth in growth potential in the country, only after Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh. "Even in the academic sphere, Coimbatore is poised to emerge as one of the largest suppliers of human resources by 2008."
Hinder progress
However, the infrastructure of the city was "very deficient to sustain this growth potential" and would hinder the city's progress, he lamented.
He suggested the following plan for improving its infrastructure: conversion of 100 km long roads in the city into high-tech roads, construction of stormwater drains through the entire stretch, road laying done with the co-ordination of various departments to avoid digging the road at will.

Maharaja group to open amusement park
Coimbatore: For entertainment-starved Coimbatore, relief is round the corner with the Rs 25-crore amusement park `Maharaja World' set to open on Tamil New Year's day (April 14, 2006).
Sathiyamoorthy said the park would be of "international standards" and great attention has been shown to create the perfect ambience for the visitors to enjoy. The amusement park will have seven distinct areas - the multiplex cinema with two a/c theatres, a food court, a miniature golf course, conference facilities and theme parks for kids and families and a water theme park. Each of the three parks will have fifteen rides. Since thrill rides need an investment of Rs 1.5 crore each, they will be offered later. Sathiyamoorthy said there would be a single entry ticket for offerings other than the multiplex and golf course. While for adults the entry fee would be around Rs 350, for kids it would about Rs 250. He was hopeful of the project achieving break-even in three to four years. But the company would have to continuously invest in creating new facilities to attract visitors. The park would be able to accommodate over 2,000 plus at any given time
Sathiyamoorthy said in the next phase he planned to develop a resort that will have a jungle ambience. It would have bamboo cottages and individual swimming pools; the 10-acre project next to the amusement park would cost about Rs 5 crore.
An artificial hill has been created using black soil. Sathiyamoorthy plans to build a restaurant atop the hill. He is also keen to establish a science and technology museum that will provide an interactive experience to visitors.

In Arasur, the park would come up on a 102-acre site and in Manickampalayam the park would have an area of 65 acres. The Central Government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for providing basic infrastructure like roads, office building etc.
Coimbatore , Jan. 11
THE Coimbatore Tiny & Small Foundry Owners Association (Cosmafan) is gearing up to begin work on the establishment of `Foundry Parks' at Arasur and Manickampalayam in Coimbatore district that would involve an investment of more than Rs 100 crore, including the cost of establishment of manufacturing facilities.
The association is elated that the move coincides with the boom time the foundries are witnessing because of increasing demand from various sectors such as engineering and auto components not only from within the country but from abroad too.
Speaking to Business Line, Mr P. Udayakumar, Secretary, Cosmafan, said the work relating to the `Foundry Parks' are being taken up as part of the Coimbatore Industrial Cluster project being implemented by the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers' Association (SIEMA) in collaboration with others.
While in Arasur, the park would come up on a 102-acre site, in Manickampalayam, the park would have an area of 65 acres. He said the Central Government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for providing basic infrastructure like roads, office building etc.
He said the association was hopeful that the Tamil Nadu Government also would extend assistance to the project. Already, a few banks have shown interest in providing financial assistance on a long-term basis to the foundry units that would be established in the parks to meet the cost of construction of buildings, raw material, working capital requirements etc.
He said 132 foundry units have expressed a desire to establish their units in the two `Foundry Parks' and have booked land ranging from 50 cents to one acre. Work on road formation within the park area would commence later this month. He expected the land allotment process for the foundry units to be completed in about six months and was hopeful that the units would be able to begin their operations within one year.
Mr Udayakumar, explaining the advantages of the establishment of the foundry parks, said the units would be having induction furnaces and these would be modern foundries.
Hence, there would be no reason for concern over pollution. The units would produce steel castings for diverse industries like engineering, auto components etc.
Since each unit would require an investment of a minimum of Rs 50 lakh up to Rs 1 crore, the total investment in the project is expected to exceed Rs 100 crore. He said the foundry units have seen a buoyant demand and buyers from European countries have also been placing orders with the foundries here.

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore has jumped on the IT bandwagon. It is now a happening city. But the ride ahead seems a bit bumpy for the city indicating the need for a facelift in infrastructure.
Industrialists, who are optimistic that Coimbatore will transform itself into a vibrant IT hub in the near future, point out that the city’s infrastructure development is not on a par with the industrial growth that has been taking place for the last several years.
Several representations have been sent to the State Government by associations here, seeking to address this issue and spurring the IT growth in the Textile City.
The ever growing pool of competent technical manpower, low attrition rate, cosmopolitan culture, salubrious climate and the presence of hill stations like Ooty and Kodaikanal, and tourism spots are listed as advantages for Coimbatore.
Moreover, several reputed engineering colleges located in and around the city roll out IT professionals in Coimbatore which already boasts of more than 100 IT companies that have set up businesses in areas ranging from IT-enabled services to high-end telecom software.
The success of these companies has attracted the attention of global IT majors and funding agencies like Intel, GE Caps and Barings.
Cognizant and Spheris have already launched their operations here. Wipro has already announced its arrival to Coimbatore. Apart from all these, a score of small and medium units is coming up in Coimbatore.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has been taking initiatives to showcase Coimbatore as a favourite IT destination.
Speaking on behalf of his chairperson Nandini Rangaswamy, CII, Coimbatore Zone’s E B Rajesh said that during the past four years, the CII had been marketing Coimbatore. Now things were happening. ‘‘Coimbatore is moving ahead. A lot of enquiries are flowing in, and many are becoming a reality. The investments in IT alone during the last two years have been resounding.’’
As of now, two new IT parks were coming up, one promoted by the State Government and another, a private initiative, he said. ‘‘We have to accept that Coimbatore is a tier II city. We are expecting an IT boom since tier I cities have started choking,’’ he added.

TIRUPUR: Under the judiciary's scanner on textile processing units' progress in attaining zero effluent discharge, six newly formed common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) here on Thursday performed boomi puja to lay pipes for carrying effluents from the units to the plants.
164 units
The CETPs at Arulpuram, Rayapuram, Murugampalayam, Kallikkadu, Mangalam and Eastern comprising 164 dyeing and bleaching units have entrusted the work with the Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company Limited.
They have formed two companies, namely Noyyal Common Effluent Treatment Company Limited (NCETCL) and Mangalam Eastern Water Recycling Company Limited, to carry out the task.
S. Sivasamy, the Chairman of NCETCL, says the contractor will lay pipes at an outlay of Rs. 39 crores.
Let us hope these CTPs solve the woes faced by agriculturist along the banks of Noyyal

Yep! Better late than never :)
Ajaypp January 21st, 2006, 08:02 PM CETPs are a great idea.:) Especially since there has been a lot of negative publicity concering the textile industry. Coimbatore has become one of the industrial powerhouses of the South, and it needs a lot of infra to support its growth.
WillyWick January 22nd, 2006, 03:24 AM Major infrastructure work is required for this city. Something along the lines of IT Corridor would be a big boost to this city- an IT highway with government acquiring about 2000 acres of land. If CTS , TCS,infy (if possible) start building thier own campuses(wipro has already acquired 12 acres of land), private builders will start pouring money in to build thier own IT parks and FDI would also increase. hopefully in five years there will be a really strong Southern IT power in the led by bangalore, chennai and hyderbad followed by coimbatore, trivandram, cochin, mysore, vizag and magalore. Doubt if madurai will fall into it, be nice if it joins the IT bandwagon.
nik January 22nd, 2006, 06:45 AM Coimbatore has another opening with the manufacturing sector reviving slowly. This will attract more IT industries too..

Gearing up for more entertainment
by

COIMBATORE: "I came here a few months ago.
400 crores.
Mr. Agarwal says that the success of the project depends more on the facilities that will be offered rather than the income of people. The city has a potential and the complex will cater to the requirements of all sections of society.
Agarwal about the project and the company is looking at similar projects in Tiruchi and Madurai.

kvijayasundaram January 25th, 2006, 11:02 PM Kovai sees 2000cr investments in Textile industry
Link to the news..... (http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2006/01/26/stories/2006012600262100.htm)
THE textile industry in Coimbatore region has pumped in Rs 2,000 crore as new investments in the past two years or so.
This investment is based on the rough estimate of about one million new spindle equivalent capacity creation seen by the spinning and composite mills in the region, according to SIMA officials.
According to Mr Vijay Venkataswamy, former SIMA Chairman, the new spindle creation as well as modernisation of old spindles that would have happened in recent years in the region would be 10-15 lakh.
Mr Arumugham, SIMA Chairman, said that in addition to this, the weaving and processing sectors which have seen renewed investment interests of late would have attracted another Rs 500-crore worth of investment in the past two years.
Much of it was triggered by the soft loan package allowed for the textile industry by the Government under the technology upgradation fund scheme (TUFS).
Under the TUFS route, financially well-managed textile enterprises stand to get term loan from the financial institutions and banks at as low rate as three per cent for their modernisation and capital investment programmes.
Tamil Nadu and Gujarat occupy top slots in the list of States that have availed large chunk of bankable funds under the TUFS route.
The other States which claimed huge amounts under TUFS are Punjab and Rajasthan, besides Maharashtra.
kvijayasundaram January 26th, 2006, 10:05 PM OLHO Technik to set up manufacturing facility in Coimbatore

L.N. Revathy
Coimbatore , Jan. 26
OLHO Technik, which is into design and development of plastic injection moulding parts for car interiors, is looking to set up a manufacturing facility in Coimbatore.
The Chairman and promoter of OLHO Group Mr Lothar Oleff is in the city to oversee the company's India operations.
Speaking to Business Line, he said the company's Indian arm — OLHO Technik India Private Ltd - was a subsidiary of OLHO Group, Germany. "We commenced operations here in July last. We are now trying to identify a land for setting up our manufacturing facility to cater to the South East Asian market."
He said the company was started in the mid-60s as a small machine tool shop at Lohne in Germany. "We now have four manufacturing plants in Germany, one each at Brazil, Portugal and Czech Republic. India would be added to this list soon. At present, we have an office here and in the UK," he said.
He expects the India facility to take to production within the next two to three years. The company is trying to acquire 8-10 acres for this purpose.
OLHO (India) plans to open an office in the northern part of the country as well.
"Our revenues have touched $180 million. We are expecting this to increase further, consequent to our foray into the Czech Republic."
The company has 120 injection-moulding machines and five painting lines.
"We have 12 main products, which include the plastic air-condition panel, ash-tray, cup holder etc. But if all our products (including the plastic sockets) were put together, it will cross a hundred. OLHO is an automobile OEM, supplying to Volkswagen , BMW, Ford, Bentley , Jaguar, Lancer, Mercedes Benz etc."

M. Soundariya Preetha
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Areas covered: Coimbatore, Erode and Salem districts
Spinning sector: Rs. 2,000 crores
Post-spinning: Rs. 750 crores to Rs. 1,000 crores
Employment generation: 50,000 (approximately)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COIMBATORE: More orders, more production and more investments - this is what has happened to the textile sector in this region during the last one year.
"The rough estimate is that investments to the tune of Rs. 3,000 crores would have been made in the region during the last one year," say S.V. Arumugam, chairman of the Southern India Mills' Association and Vijay Venkataswami, its former chairman.
Increase in demand
After the much-awaited phasing out of quotas in January 2005, the textile units have seen a steady increase in the demand and hundreds of manufacturing facilities have sprung up across the entire region, covering Coimbatore, Erode and Salem districts. While a number of garment and made-up units have been set up, these are not capital intensive. On the spinning segment, nearly one million spindles have been added during the last one year.
"The demand for spindles is 100 per cent more than the domestic availability," they say. This includes integration, expansion and green-field projects.
Investments in the post-spinning segments should be Rs. 750 crores to Rs. 1,000 crores and in the spinning sector about Rs. 2,000 crores.
`Negligible'
However, compared to China the investments happening here are negligible. Between 1997 and 2005, China has added 50 million spindles where as the addition here is not so high, they say.
A significant impact of this growth is employment generation, they add. The number of new jobs created during the last one year (totally in all segments of the textile sector here) is at least 50,000.

Set for takeoff
http://i1.************/n3u1hz.jpg
Setting out is in progress at the site where ETL is promoting an IT park in Coimbatore
Coimbatore has never had it so good. Talks of investment pouring in are thick in the air. Some have become public knowledge like the L&T planning to establish a massive engineering facility near the city; or Gangotri Textiles going for Rs 350-crore investment to ramp up capacity in weaving, processing and garment manufacture.
Others are quietly going ahead with their expansion plans but being privately owned, there is little talk of their investment decisions. According to the grapevine, new players waiting in the wings include the Rane group of Chennai and the wind energy major Suzlon. The city is on course to become a software hub with Cognizant Technology Solutions establishing its facility at the software park in the Kumaraguru College of Technology. Elnet Technologies Ltd (ETL) has begun work on its IT Park at Peelamedu. The Sate Government's ELCOT also has acquired 30 acres of land to build an IT park on the lines of Chennai's Tidel Park behind the Government Medical College. The basic infrastructure alone will cost about Rs 250 crore in these two projects.
Other big- ticket investors include Precot Mills, K.P.R. Mills and S.P. Apparels. The Coimbatore Tiny and Small Foundry Owners Association is establishing foundry parks at Arasur and Manickampalyam involving an investment of about Rs 100 crore.
The hospitality industry is also in for good times and the Tata group has begun preliminary work in building a hotel in the city. There are reports that a Chennai-based hotel group is also interested in the city.
What has suddenly made Coimbatore an investment hotspot? While many of the investment plans are still to crystallise, their impact is unmistakably felt in several spheres such as the hospitality sector, real estateand retail business. The general mood is upbeat though there is hardly any attempt by either the Centre or the State Government to hard-sell Coimbatore as a preferred alternative to Chennai or Bangalore, where the civic infrastructure seems to be cracking up.
Coimbatore is consolidating its position in the industrial map of the country in a variety of fields — textiles, auto components, pump manufacture, readymade garments, textile machinery, castings and software.
The city, which was in the grip of prolonged recession in the 1990s due to the twin blows — industrial recession and the serial bomb blasts that rocked Coimbatore in 1998 — has in the last couple of years shaken off their crippling impact. Taking the buoyancy in retail as a yardstick one can safely conclude that Coimbatore has scripted a perfect growth story.
In the last two or three years, large textile and jewellery showrooms have been established by Alukkas and Kalyan group from Kerala, Ganapathy Silks from Sankarankovil and Shree Krishna Collections from Chennai.
Another indication of growing interest in the city is the spurt in the number of flights to and from Coimbatore. From a handful of daily flights, as many as 19 flights operate here and more airlines are eyeing the Coimbatore skies. There has been phenomenal growth in the passenger traffic in the past two years — from around 24,000 in December 2003 to 41,000 in December 2004 and 60,062 in December 2005.
The growth in the number of two and four-wheelers in the last two years in a city already known for its love for automobiles is yet another proof that Coimbatore has finally arrived as an investment destination. Nandini Rangaswamy, Chairperson, CII, Coimbatore Zone, says the textile mills in the region have seized the opportunity offered by the Textile Upgradation Fund (TUF) to modernise and expand capacity. With textile mills in developed countries like the US closing down, the manufacturing activities have shifted to countries such as China and India. Some of the blue-chip textile mills of Coimbatore had regularly modernised their operations, maintained high quality and productivity and kept their costs under check. These mills were able to weather the difficult times of the 1990s. Many mills in the private sector have quietly gone for forward and backward integration.
With metros like Chennai and Bangalore witnessing saturation, the attention of investors is turning towards Tier-II cities and surveys have shown that Coimbatore figures among the top 10 cities as a potential investment destinations. She points out that L&T would have done its homework before buying a vast stretch of land near Coimbatore to establish a manufacturing unit. The availability of skilled and technically qualified manpower, pleasant climate, facilities like water and power, and quality educational institutions have catapulted the city as a top investment choice.
Nandini adds that five years ago when the CII began its promotion of Coimbatore as an IT destination, Bangalore and Chennai were still evolving as IT hotspots. At that time there was very little talk of any investor coming to Coimbatore. But in the last two years the inquiries have increased; the IT sector has started looking at Coimbatore because of saturation in tier-I cities.
"But I hope the development of Coimbatore will be sustained and widespread and we don't go the Bangalore way." While it would be premature to quantify the investment that the city will soon witness, land prices are shooting up, havingappreciated by 40-50 per cent in a year.
Anniyan February 3rd, 2006, 08:45 PM Aiming for the sky
The Tirupur-based Park group of institutions has aligned with the Malaysia-based Link Aerospace Ltd to promote an aviation academy in Coimbatore.
The joint venture intends to train human resources needed for the aviation industry like commercial pilots and aeronautical maintenance engineers and is to be set up with an investment of Rs 50 crore.
"The proposed aviation academy will be a separate business entity. The Park Academy of Aviation will partner with Link Aerospace Ltd in the 50:50 venture," said r R.V. Ravi, the group Chairman.
The Park group, which runs educational institutions including an engineering college, will provide the required infrastructure and faculty for the `Aerospace Academy'. The academy would be located at the Park College of Engineering at Kaniyur near Coimbatore.

Bracing up for IT competition
As companies such as L&T and software majors prepare to enter Coimbatore, the question is: Can traditional industries retain talent in the face of better remuneration elsewhere? Already, a lot of churning is taking place but mostly in the textile space. But now engineering industry too seems to be waking up to the reality of competition in the manpower space.
Nandini Rangaswamy, Chairperson, CII, Coimbatore Zone, says in her personal capacity as an industrialist, "It is very, very difficult now" to find qualified manpower at mid-level managerial positions and above in Coimbatore. The existing industries "feel threatened by IT" and the attractive salaries the sector offers. Cost of living would go up too, but the service industry would welcome this development since it would give a boost to the general economy.
She said unlike many tier-II cities, Coimbatore was already a highly industrialised town, and more investment would improve the city's economy. Though she's not against competition, development should be in a sustained way as not to hurt existing industries

The past decade saw a lot of change, so much so that the saying "Change is the only constant in the world" seemed appropriate for India and, in particular, the city of Coimbatore. It saw its main industry, textiles, battered and the other trades also reduced to a shadow of the original due to various problems, including communal issues.
Multinational companies had spotlighted Coimbatore as a potential destination for manufacturing facilities before the mid-1990s and after the slowdown the general feeling was that this was a ghost city, which had missed the opportunity and may not make the grade amongst the leading cities of the country. The New Year sees Coimbatore as busy as ever; there are six flights a day to Chennai, five to Mumbai, and all of them flying full. There is even talk of Singapore and Frankfurt being linked to the city. The hotels are full and one cannot get rooms at short notice. For many, this opens up scope for setting up entertainment avenues such as shopping malls and multiplexes. Thus, entertainment comes as a package with the IT dream. Builders too seem to be cashing in on the trend by catering to the corporate clientele.
For instance, Mayflower Enterprises, builders specialising in residential projects, has announced their latest IT Park coming up at ATT Colony

WillyWick February 7th, 2006, 04:29 AM Chinese textile machinery makes inroads into India
As the textile machinery manufacturers from Germany, China and Korea bet high on Indian industry, taking advantage of the post quota period, the indigenous machinery manufacturers are losing out due to the delay in delivery. Therefore units in India prefer imported machines.
Going by the current surge in the export of German machinery to India, the VDMA, the trade body of the German Textile Machinery Association, expects that the export to India would touch 200 million euros, says an industry report.
India imported machinery worth 140 million euros from Germany in 2004, an increase by 30 per cent. It again increased by 84 per cent during 2005.
China is also gaining advantage in this field. A ten-member delegation, on behalf of the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (Texprocil) and the Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA), visited China in November last year to evaluate the machinery there.
As of now, 40 to 50 textile mills from Coimbatore have evinced keen interest in placing orders with Chinese machinery manufacturers. “More than five mills have placed bulk orders for their projects, and 15 mills are mulling importing machineries,” K Selvaraju, secretary, SIMA, told Business Standard.
The China Texmatech Company Limited (CTMTC) is likely to set up its shop in Coimbatore by the end of this month which will warehouse all critical components so that the mills in the region can make use of them.
Commenting on this, S V Arumugam, chairman of the association, said that the textile mills prefer spinning machines from China mainly because of the longer time taken by indigenous manufacturers for delivery.
“In order to survive in the highly-competitive market, India’s cotton-centric textile manufacturers need to focus on upgrading their machinery besides creating new facilities and additional capacities. They require better machinery. Though domestic machines are competitive in terms of quality and price, the delivery schedule, which even extends to two to three years, is a matter of concern. Chinese machines require a delivery time of only four to six months,” he added.
Moreover, the Indian textile machinery manufacturers are not able to bridge the demand-supply gap. The demand for the frames is almost double the supply in India, with a requirement of 4 million spindles a year.
To take advantage of the huge demand the Chinese textile machinery suppliers are planning to come out with a uniform pricing policy in order to enable the textile mills in India to firm up their orders.

WillyWick February 8th, 2006, 02:53 AM LMW to increase spinning machine output
COIMBATORE: Lakshmi Machine Works (LMW), the Coimbatore-based textile machinery manufacturing major, has embarked on an expansion and modernisation programme to increase its spinning machinery production.
"We hope to complete it by mid-2006-07," says R. Rajendran, Chief Financial Officer. Orders have been placed already for the mother machines.
Through the Rs. 200-crore expansion and modernisation programme, the company hopes to increase its annual production from about 1.8 million spindles to about 2.7 million spindles.
We are also creating capacity and trying to meet the industry's requirement," he said. The company's spinning machine production (in terms of volume) went up by about 45 per cent in 2004-05. It is expected to go up by 35 per cent this year and by another 35-40 per cent during the next fiscal.
LMW's turnover in 2004-05 was Rs. 990 crore and this was expected to increase by 35-40 per cent during the current fiscal, he said.

WillyWick February 10th, 2006, 09:38 PM CBE-Mettupalayam NH work to begin soon
Coimbatore, Feb 10: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, T R Baalu, today said the works for Coimbatore-Mettupalayam and Coimbatore-Tiruchy National Highway would be taken up soon, even though only one tender was received at present.
Speaking after laying the foundation stone for strengthening and upgradation of Karur-Coimbatore section of NH-67, here, he said that only one tender has been received at present.
Though the department was not in a position to go ahead with a single tender, he would try to begin the works for the project as early as possible, in view of the demands made by various speakers at the function, Baalu said.
He also assured to consider the demand for a ring road around Coimbatore, to avoid traffic congestion in the city.
When brought to his notice on continuation of collecting toll even after the expiry of the contract period, Baalu said though after transfer of the road to the Government, the toll, in some cases, was being collected for maintenance.
The 114 km long Karur-Coimbatore road, at a cost of about Rs 176 crore would be completed within two years, the minister said, adding that the project connecting the two cities would tremendously enhance the industries and commerce in the region

WillyWick February 12th, 2006, 12:08 AM Tirupur- Indian Textile hub & Its hurdles
NOBODY could have imagined that a small, drought-prone town would see such an explosive growth in two decades. After having gained an international repute as a reliable cotton knitwear supplier, Tirupur, in western Tamil Nadu, has emerged as the knitwear capital of India with annual exports over Rs.6,000 crores.
For an international buyer who wants to source cotton knitwear, Tirupur has emerged as the second best choice, next to China. Seventy per cent of the country's total cotton knitwear exports originate from here.
Robust growth
Along with export-led growth, Tirupur is one of the few Indian towns that took advantage of globalisation and economic reforms. Tirupur began exporting knitwear in the early 1980s. In 1985, the turnover was just Rs.15 crores. It touched Rs. 5,700 crores last year and is expected to cross Rs. 7,000 crores this year.
Tirupur's success story began modestly with producing innerwear for the domestic market in the 1940s. The town still produces knitted garments worth Rs. 1,750 crores for the domestic market. The industry has evolved tremendously in the last 20 years. "Whenever a new apparel machinery is introduced anywhere in the world, Tirupur is the first buyer. We never hesitate to invest in technology upgradation. It has become routine to invest our profits in expansion and modernisation," says A. Sakthivel, president of the Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA). Coimbatore MP, K. Subbarayan, says the robust growth has positively influenced the socio-economic profile of the region. Land prices have gone up and the agrarian community that was earlier frustrated due to acute water scarcity has got a fresh lease of life.
The industry employs more than 3,00,000 workers and expansion requires 1,00,000 more skilled workers. Labour is sourced mostly from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and, to an extent, from neighbouring Kerala. Buses ply up to a 50-km radius every day in search of workers. Every day 10-15 families come into Tirupur looking for employment. Since it caters to all segments, including fashion and high value garments for all age groups, all leading brands and chain stores source their garment needs here. Bulk orders are more the norm than the exception now.
With new avenues opening up, the size of the units and investment in them has increases dramatically. "Earlier a company with five machines and 20 workers was considered a basic unit. If one had 25 machines and 100 workers, it was rated big. But now factories are coming up in 20,000 sq.ft. to 1,00,000 sq.ft. premises with 1,000 machines," says G. Karthikeyan, the TEA secretary.
Earlier, an order of 2,000 T-shirts was considered big, but exporters now talk in terms of lakhs. "Buyer preferences are predominant. We are flexible enough to accommodate the demands, irrespective of the volume or style," says Karthikeyan.
Adverse impact
The staggering growth has had adverse impact in the form of air, land, river and groundwater pollution. Textile effluents from 700-odd dyeing units discharged 100 million litres of treated effluents a day and irreparably damaged the Noyyal, besides leaving behind hundreds of tonnes of hazardous sludge as residue. Thousands of acres of agricultural lands downstream of Orathupalayam Dam have been seriously affected. Under constant pressure from the Madras High Court, where the affected farmers and polluters are locked in battle, there has been some progress in attaining zero effluent discharge.
N. Kandasamy, President, Dyers Association of Tirupur, says, "Without active support from the government, it is difficult to mobilise resources to put up reverse osmosis plants."
"The State government pushed the ball to the Centre's court saying export is a Central subject and has refused any financial assistance. In fact pollution control is a State subject. It is unfortunate that the Government washes its hands off when the industry badly needs its help," charges Subbarayan.
Dozens of Mercedes Benz and hundreds of other luxury cars ply in Tirupur; but there are hardly any good stretch of road. There is growing discontent among the citizens over poor infrastructure. People complain about poor quality of life. Children are the worst affected due to recurring respiratory diseases caused by dust allergies. At any given time, one can spot at least 50 foreigners in Tirupur.
"Through hard work and risk-taking entrepreneurship, we built up the business. We fear the poor infrastructure may drive buyers away," complains Ramu, a trustee of Valam, a private initiative, launched to create infrastructure. Valam is now building a bridge and road at a cost of Rs.2 crores through public donations to reduce traffic congestion.
Workers' conditions
The other side of the dream is even more pitiable. Says M. Chandran, a CITU leader: "After hours of toiling, workers still lead a pathetic life. They do not have access to good housing or quality education for their children. The living conditions of poor migrant women workers are even more pathetic."
Thousands of migrant workers lead a subhuman life in small rooms (called "line houses") on the banks of the stinking Noyyal and the outskirts of Tirupur. Open defecation is a common sight.
Unplanned growth has led to a sharp rise in land prices and exorbitant house rents. Lack of housing, health care and entertainment and high cost of living are the reasons for the constant shortage of labour.
As a positive step, an export house, Stallion Garments, is now constructing 400 low-cost houses for its workers. At least 20,000 more houses will be needed to accommodate the expanding workforce.
There is a long-pending demand from the South India Hosiery Manufacturers Association and other trade bodies to make Tirupur a district headquarters and Corporation.
"One-fifth of the town does not have a road, drainage and water supply. If the Centre gives back to us just one per cent of the foreign exchange that we earn, we could carry out tremendous changes," asserts Municipal Chairman M.N. Palanisamy.
Normally workers spend 12-14 hours a day in the workplace. The busy town has nothing as entertainment or recreation. As far as infrastructure is concerned, the town requires to be rebuilt.
Many say the success behind Tirupur is that there is no trade secret.
It is on open secret that the exporters' cherished goal of achieving Rs.15,000 crores exports in 2010, may remain a pipedream unless the issues of pollution and creating infrastructure including the construction of low cost houses on a massive scale are addressed.

The Tirupur Industrial Federation (TIF), an umbrella organisation for the job-working units comprising South India Imported Machine Knitters Association, Computer Embroiderers Association, the Knit Compactor Association and Tirupur Raising Association, will run the exchange. The Development Commissioner of Small Scale Industries, New Delhi, has granted Rs.6.5 lakhs for establishing the exchange and to meet recurring expenditure for three years.
According to Ahill M.S. Mani, president of TIF, any job-worker who undertakes works on sub-contract basis for knitwear exporters can become a member. "Now exporters get different types of orders requiring different washes and finishes.
To execute the order they find it difficult to identify the right unit that has required machinery. And sometimes all the orders are being dumped at a place or two due to lack of information.
The exchange will help them in identifying the right supplier ,'' Mr. Mani said. Even an operator who has only one knitting or embroidery machine can get his share.

MaduraiSelvam February 16th, 2006, 10:35 PM Pilot project at Coimbatore for e-filing of company documents — TCS develops software, infrastructure support
G. Gurumurthy
About 53 physical front offices across various States will be set up to supplement the efforts of RoCs as many industry centres may not be located close to the offices of RoC
Coimbatore , Feb. 15
THE Ministry of Company Affairs (MCA) is set to roll out its e-governance programme `MAC21' with the launch of a pilot project for e-filing of company documents at the registrar of companies (RoC), Coimbatore this weekend.
E-filing, part of MAC21's e-governance programme to help corporates meet statutory compliances, will be gradually introduced to all the RoC offices across the country by April 2006.
The Union Minister of Company Affairs, Mr Prem Chand Gupta, will launch the pilot project here on Saturday.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will be the operator of MCA's on-line services for the next seven years. TCS has developed the software and IT infrastructure support for the MCA. It will also run 53 physical front offices (PFOs) across various States to assist certified professionals and companies in filing documents online. These centres are meant to supplement the efforts of RoCs, as many industry centres may not be located close to the offices of RoC. In many areas, companies may not have access to e-filing facilities. Thus, PFOs would be able to process electronic documents for such companies and transfer them to RoCs.
Coimbatore RoC was identified for the launch of the pilot project, after considering the compact size of the corporates there, and their adoptability and adherence to statutory compliances. As against the all-India average compliance (in filing of returns) of 50 per cent, Coimbatore's statutory compliance with company laws is 60 per cent.
With Coimbatore RoC having a jurisdiction over seven districts, the average number of companies being incorporated by the office in a month is around 45-50. As on February 14, 2006, the total number of companies incorporated by the RoC Coimbatore was 12,573.
The National Institute of Smart Government (NISG) devised MCA's online filing system. A unique director identification number (DIN) and a digital signature certificate for the use of authorised signatories mandated to handle online filing by companies will be issued under the system. Once the network gets stabilised, statutory company documents such as the memorandum of association, annual returns and balance sheets can be filed in 24 hours.

MaduraiSelvam February 19th, 2006, 11:30 PM Bracing up for IT competition
R.Y. Narayanan
Traditional industries in the city are waking up to the reality of competition in the manpower space. And companies are going all out to retain employees.
Sustainable development
Nandini Rangaswamy, Chairperson, CII, Coimbatore Zone, says in her personal capacity as an industrialist, "It is very, very difficult now" to find qualified manpower at mid-level managerial positions and above in Coimbatore. The existing industries "feel threatened by IT" and the attractive salaries the sector offers. Cost of living would go up too, but the service industry would welcome this development since it would give a boost to the general economy.
She said unlike many tier-II cities, Coimbatore was already a highly industrialised town, and more investment would improve the city's economy. Though she's not against competition, development should be in a sustained way as not to hurt existing industries. D. Balasundaram, Managing Director, CPC Ltd, said compared to textile, the engineering industry, which is more professionally managed, faces less attrition as it offers better wages. While export-oriented companies would be able to face the pressure on wages, others would find the going tough. Many would be forced to shift their production bases further South where salaries were more affordable. Normally the engineering industry gives a 5-10 per cent annual pay hike, but qualified employees get up to 20 per cent. He added there was apprehension that the IT sector would draw their skilled employees with the glamour of international travel, something the manufacturing sector could not match.
J. Balu, President, Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (Codissia), said most of the major engineering companies in Coimbatore were working at full capacity and some were even refusing fresh orders. While a majority continue to expand their capacity, about 20-30 per cent of the companies were stagnating. As the entrepreneurial skill was high, the overheads were less and the products were cost competitive.
Smaller units hit
Smaller engineering units face more pressure on the rising wage front. "There is a limit to the wage burden they can absorb."
Even among the big players, there was intense competition in the compensation package between the old and new companies, with some of the newer companies matching IT/ITeS wages, as they did not want to lose orders. Balu added that like the textile mills, in the engineering industry too contract labour has come into existence.

MaduraiSelvam February 19th, 2006, 11:32 PM An emerging IT hub
L.N. Revathy
Coimbatore is an emerging IT hub; however, the city has a long way to go before it can catch up with a Hyderabad or Pune.
This has been any entrepreneur's dream. The relentless campaign by the Coimbatore zone of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in marketing this town is beginning to yield results, though slowly. After years of sustained efforts, CII has finally managed to convince the Government to moot an IT project here.
But the project is yet to see the light of the day, even after nine months of passing a Government Order, setting aside 29.08 acres belonging to the Coimbatore Medical College in favour of the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) for developing the IT park. "We have completed the liasing and firmed up the plans. Now it is for ELCOT to set the ball rolling," says the regional CII Chairperson, Nandini Rangasamy.
PricewaterhouseCoopers has rated the city among the top four with considerable IT potential. But even as early as 1998, IT initiatives in the city got a boost from the facility at the PSG-Science and Technology Park (STEP), established in association with the Department of Science and Technology and financial institutions. It currently houses over 35 ITeS companies, and also functions as an incubator for start-up companies.
Companies like Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS) and Tata Consultancy Services have identified potential pockets for their presence in the city with help from enthusiastic project promoters. The IT park at the Kumarguru College of Technology campus, for instance, has come up on a one-lakh-sq-ft area. The single-window clearance from the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and readily available data connectivity enabled CTS and HealthScribe (in the medical transcription space) commence operations immediately.
The CTS facility here has attracted talent from its existing operations across India, and also from the entire region, including Kerala, both at the entry and lateral levels. "The city's rich talent pool, entrepreneurial culture, salubrious climate, and decent infrastructure in terms of road, power, railways and air connectivity have played a great part in the growth of this centre," says Vishnu Potty, Director and Head of Coimbatore operations.
The company had, at the time of the inauguration of this centre in August 2005, planned to recruit about 400 professionals in the first year of operations. "We have already exceeded 300 professionals," says Potty. Its operations here centre round applications maintenance, testing and IT infrastructure services for its global customers.
The city has five universities, 25 engineering colleges and 85 arts, science and commerce colleges that provide the required qualified manpower for the ITeS companies. Industry sources say that the operational costs are at least 25 per cent cheaper than Chennai and attrition rates are low.
Apart from the proposed software park by ELCOT, ETL Infrastructure Services Ltd, promoted by Elnet Technologies Ltd and Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Ltd, has started work for establishing a software park with world-class facilities. The project, in an area of 14 acres on Avinashi Road, would be completed by September 2006. Says Thiagarajan of ETL, "In the first phase, eight lakh sq ft will be constructed at Rs 140 crore. It will be an intelligent building with business and training centres, food court and car parking facilities. Another eight lakh sq ft will be constructed in the second phase."
With a lot of IT companies evincing interest in Coimbatore and with the enquiries generated, Thiagarajan does not expect "renting out space to be a problem".

The Coimbatore Corporation has begun efforts to implement the Pilloor Second Phase drinking water scheme, pending for more than five years. The State Government's technical committee has cleared the scheme and the final clearance may come soon, the Mayor, T. Malaravan, said on Tuesday.
The good news is the city will get an additional 61.84 million litres a day (mld). It already gets 65.97 mld from the first phase (from the Pilloor dam) and 85 mld from the Siruvani scheme. The second scheme can supply 96.74 mld in 2021 and has an ultimate capacity of 139 mld supply for the city.
It has been designed mainly to provide additional supply to the city considering the pace of growth. "The city is growing and we will need more water as multi-storeyed housing complexes are on the rise," the Mayor said after discussing the implementation of the scheme with councillors, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board and Corporation officials.

WillyWick February 22nd, 2006, 01:09 AM Drought in Kenya proves a blessing for South Indian tea
Industry sources estimate a 25 per cent drop in the Kenyan tea production this year, owing to severe drought. Against a 328 million kilo production in 2005, the country estimates a 82 million kg drop this year.
“Kenya exports almost its entire produce to Pakistan and the UK. India can now utilise this opportunity to raise exports and gain markets in these countries which consume good CTC teas,” an auctioneer told Business Standard. It is noteworthy that only Indian teas match the Kenyan quality, he added.
Due to the drought situation in Kenya, the demand has suddenly shot up and there is a huge mismatch between the demand and supply gap, particularly in the CTC varieties that have begun to trade dearer, according to a source in the Coimbatore auction centre.
The four consecutive auctions at the two centres in the region- Coimbatore and Coonoor- saw the entry of exporters in a big way. The support comes from the buyers even as the production has been affected by the frost in South India.

COIMBATORE: The Union Government will provide adequate subsidy to the dyeing/bleaching units of Tirupur which have been directed by the High Court to install effluent treatment plants, said EVKS Elangovan, Union Minister of State for Textiles.
Talking to newsmen, Elangovan said the effluent treatment plants using the reverse osmosis (RO) technology should be erected as per court directives in all the dyeing and bleaching units and it needs huge investment.
The owners of the dyeing and bleaching units have also appealed to the Central and State Governments seeking subsidy for the same, he added.
The Central Government would grant the subsidy sought by the industry, Elangovan said.
Referring to the demand of the textile industry for extending the age limit of the second hand machines, which were being imported under the Technology Upgradation Fund (TUF) scheme, he said the government would take up this for consideration and a decision on the same would be announced soon.

TIRUPUR: Work on the Palladam Hi-Tech Weaving Park, which is being established on the barren land off Coimbatore National Highway, 6 km from Palladam, is progressing fast. Nearly 900 construction workers are engaged in the construction activity that is progressing day and night.
"We are speeding up the work mainly to catch up with the deadline. In all probability we will complete the work by June,'' says M. Senthil Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of the Park.
Common facilities
Construction of 105 sheds, including six sizing and warping units, and common facilities such as roads, display hall, training centre, working women hostel, crèche, canteens and hospital are on. Workers from far away places such as Nagerkoil, Tiruchy, Pudukkottai and Andhra Pradesh are engaged in the work and temporary shelters have been provided for them.
The Park that promises to make Palladam a hub for home textiles will house 720 airjet looms that produce 153-inch wide bed linens and curtain clothes, sources said.
And, it is expected to provide employment to more than 3,000 persons.
Project cost
Of the total project cost of Rs. 44 crores for construction of buildings and creating public amenities, the Union Government would provide a grant of Rs. 17.60 crore (40 per cent) under the Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks. The State Government also extended financial assistance of Rs. 4.87 crores recently. Machinery worth Rs. 150 crores is expected to be installed here.
Mr. Kumar says the response from the banks is encouraging.
"When it comes to capacity building we are far behind China. We have to do it in a very aggressive and swift manner to capture the international market,'' he adds.
According to Mr. Kumar, machinery installation will be over by September.

WillyWick March 7th, 2006, 02:50 AM Initiative Launched For Asian Sourcing Network
First ASN Center, in Coimbatore, India, Will Focus on Engineered Machined Parts
CHICAGO, PLANO, Texas and COIMBATORE, India, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- A.T. Kearney Procurement Solutions, a leading global sourcing services firm, and UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today launched a groundbreaking initiative designed to enable manufacturers to connect companies from low-cost countries to their global innovation networks through a first-ever joint solution of information technology, software and consulting services.
Calling the new joint solution the Asian Sourcing Network (ASN), the companies are teaming with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading information technology and engineering services organization, to open the first ASN center in Coimbatore, India. Through the ASN center, which the companies opened on March 4, the three companies will find, develop and on-board companies from low-cost countries from which manufacturers and their suppliers can electronically source engineered machine parts. ASN will provide companies with a perpetual local presence, which is critical to the success of low-cost country sourcing activity.
"Identifying and building effective long-term relationships with the right low-cost suppliers will be a distinguishing characteristic of leadership companies going forward," said Joseph Raudabaugh, President, A.T. Kearney Procurement Solutions. "Finding, developing and on-boarding these key suppliers and getting them fully embedded into supplier-partner networks is critical."
"ASN combines the extensive supplier research assessment and negotiation capabilities of A.T. Kearney with the collaboration, content exchange, and sourcing enablement of UGS technologies and the far reaching business experience and recognized quality services of TCS to offer low-cost country sourcing as a packaged solution," added Raudabaugh.
Maximizing Global Innovation Networks
ASN targets the increasing need for manufacturers to tie low-cost country suppliers into their global innovation networks to help reduce cost. According to the Aberdeen Group, the leading provider of fact-based research and advice for the global technology-driven value chain, medium and large enterprises expect to double their average spend in low-cost countries from approximately 20 percent in 2005 to 40 percent in 2008.
The new category-specific ASN center, focused on engineered machine parts, will include 100 dedicated collaboration workstations, engineering support and supplier development services. The center will initially target over 400 small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) that provide machining services.
"ASN represents a major step forward in enabling companies to leverage global innovation networks by establishing the local presence critical to the success of low-cost country sourcing activity," said Raj Khoshoo, Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, UGS. "The fusion of technology, services, content, data integration and best practices deployment is a logical extension for existing UGS Teamcenter customers. In addition, both existing and new customers will reap benefits including improved process coordination, reduced travel demands and radically enhanced supplier performance."
"This initiative by A.T. Kearney Procurement Solutions, UGS and TCS will enable the global manufacturing industry to achieve desegregation of their value chain and restructure their supply chain to include global suppliers based on the selection criteria of an optimum combination of capability and cost," said Dr. Ravi Gopinath, Vice President, Engineering and Industrial Services, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. "TCS' extensive understanding of the manufacturing industry puts it in a unique position to make this initiative a big success. TCS is committed to enhance the competitiveness of the manufacturing and SME sector in low-cost countries through supply network management and guiding continuous improvement cycles."
ASN focuses on addressing both classical sourcing needs, such as supplier identification, supplier assessment and evaluation, and sourcing negotiations, as well as providing for critical process and supplier management requirements, such as:
* Supplier participation through "global" collaboration to enable key
operational processes, for example, quality monitoring, engineering
changes, and inter-company teaming
* Supply market transparency in low-cost countries
* In-country engineering services support
* Technical capabilities mapped to support requirements-driven sourcing
analytics
* Version control and tracking of all inter-company documents and
communications
* Joint project management and issue tracking
* Configurable workflows and performance tracking

While the small growers are happy about this trend, the rise has not brought about any change in their livelihood. Growers say that they are neck-deep in debt and it would take a while for them to come out of the clutches of the local moneylender. The small growers of Alakarai village, a hamlet about 11 km from Kotagiri recall the days when they used to get Rs 18-plus on a kg of green leaf (years ago), before reaching rock-bottom levels - Rs 3/kg during the late 90s.

MaduraiSelvam March 11th, 2006, 11:47 AM Call to tap US medical market
Saturday March 11 2006 11:42 IST
COIMBATORE: India can tap the emerging medical services outsourcing market and provide cost-effective healthcare services to the US corporates, said chairman, Healthcare Sub Committee of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) -Coimbatore Zone, Dr G Bakthavathsalam, on Friday.
However, he said the Indian hospitals should create exclusive infrastructure for corporate medical tourism, which would comply with international service and quality standards recognised by the international insurance industry.
In a press release, Bakthavathsalam, who is the chairman of K G Hospital and Post Graduate Medical Institute, Coimbatore, pointed out that exclusive corporate medical tourism and medical services outsourcing infrastructure could include chartered flight services and attractive tourism packages.
Pointing out the case of General Motors, which had recently sacked 20 percent of its workforce primarily to reduce its annual healthcare cost of over five billion dollars, he said that there was a potential demand from the US corporates for cost effective healthcare solutions that could be met by low-cost healthcare destinations like India.
Bakthavathsalam said the US corporates had the opportunity to reduce the healthcare cost by one-tenth with the partnership of hospitals in India. For instance, a bypass surgery or kidney transplant would cost around 20 times cheaper in India than in the US.
The joint-knee replacement in India would cost Rs 2 lakh whereas it would be Rs 20 lakh there. He urged the governments to promote India as a corporate medical tourism destination.

Coimbatore was one among the 200 cities shortlisted for improving infrastructure, which, in turn, would enable streamlining of traffic, Singha said and added that the amount sanctioned by the Centre would be utilised for modernising existing traffic signals and setting up new ones.
He said vigilance cameras would be installed at traffic signals in certain important city areas and modern equipment would be procured for effective patrolling.
“However, to solve the city’s traffic problems in an effective manner, the existing narrow roads, which are major traffic bottlenecks, need to be widened,” he stressed.

WillyWick March 12th, 2006, 11:17 PM Gangotri mulls mega expansion plan
COIMBATORE: The city-based Gangotri Textiles Limited, engaged in the manufacture of fabrics and trousers, has embarked on a Rs 351-crore capacity expansion project.
Addressing mediapersons here on Friday, C R Vasudevan, president (projects), said the project would strengthen the dyeing, weaving and processing sectors – the weakest link in the textile industry –, which are looking up in the post-quota regime.
The project envisages the setting up of textile production facilities comprising two ring spinning units, a weaving and processing plant and a modern garment unit. The ring spinning units, proposed to come up at Pushpatthur and Midapaddi near Udumalpet would have a total of 50,000 ring spindles.
A weaving and processing plant with a capacity to produce 51,000 metres of bottom weight and shirting fabrics a day would be set up at the SIPCOT industrial estate in Perudurai near Erode. A modern garment unit with a capacity of 3,000 pieces a day would also come up at the industrial estate.
The ring spinning unit at Pushpatthur would become operational from January, 2007, followed by the second unit at Midapaddi in October 2007 while both the weaving/processing unit and the garment unit would commence their production in October 2006.
After the expansion, the company would produce 18 million meters of fabrics a year.
“To finance this massive project, the company has obtained a long-term loan of Rs 257 crore from a consortium of banks arranged by SBI Capital Markets Limited,” said R Nadanasabapathy, vice president, SBI’s regional office, Chennai.
The consortium of bankers included Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank, United Bank of India, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Travancore and Canara Bank, the lead bank.
“The loan is repayable over a period of 11 years. To meet part of its fund requirements, the company is coming out with a follow on public issue of Rs 55 crore and it is expected to venture into the capital market by April, 2006,” he said.
Manoj Kumar Tibrewal, managing director of Gangotri, said the company had proposed to install six windmills with a total generation capacity of 9.90 mw to meet its power requirements.
Of the proposed six windmills, three would be commissioned in July this year and the remaining by October, 2007, he added.
After the completion of the expansion project, the sales turnover of the company would be around Rs 500 crore with the share of export earnings accounting for Rs 70 to 100 crore, he said.

Innova Cool March 15th, 2006, 11:21 AM :)
PVR planning multiplexes in Chennai, Coimbatore and Visakhapatnam: Sanjeev Bijli.
Gurgaon-based PVR is making its presence felt, literally, across the country. Having set up its first multiplex way back in 1997 in Saket, South Delhi, it has managed to scale up the number to 50 screens.
While the growth has been a tad slow so far, considering that only 50 screens have been set up in almost a decade, PVR is now, however, switching to the fourth gear. The company recently raised Rs 150 crore via an IPO and will be investing in increasing the screen count to 200 in the next few years.
The investment lined up for the expansion is high at approximately Rs 400 crore.
Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, executive director of PVR, shares his insights with Business Standard on the multiplex scenario.
PVR seemed to have focused on the north of India for quite some time. The company is now enhancing its presence in the south as well.
How is the south Indian audience different from its northern counterparts?
There is a greater propensity to watch movies in south India. It has been noted that the per capita visitation to a theatre is high in the south when compared to the north. Therefore, while a viewer in the south may visit the theatre 10-11 times a year, in the north it may be 5-6 times a year.
Besides, as a multiplex operator, one can exhibit only Hindi and English movies in the north. But in the south, the audience is equally good for local language movies as well. In fact, there is more inclination towards Hindi movies rather than English movies in the north in contrast to the south Indian audience that has an equal number of patrons for Hindi, English as well as local language movies. A case in point is West Delhi where the ratio between English movie viewing and Hindi movie viewing is 10:90.
So what are the company's plans with regard to setting up more screens in the south?
While we already have some presence in Hyderabad and Bangalore, we are looking at more sites in these cities. In fact, India's largest multiplex with 11 screens has been set up by us in Bangalore. We will also be expanding to Chennai this year where we'll be setting up a seven-screen multiplex. The other cities that we are looking at in the south include Coimbatore, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.
It’s been quite some time since the multiplex trend started in India. Has the profile of its patrons changed with time or is it still skewed towards the youth?
Majority of our audience continues to be in the age group of 18-26. However, we are trying to change this by exhibiting different kinds of movies, including mass-market ones. Our initiative to display multilingual movies has also been taken up to reach the aforesaid end.
Do you think that the cost factor is a deterrent in making this happen as the occupancy rates at multiplexes continue to be 45-55 per cent?
The ticket rates vary from city to city. Besides, in some cities we have adopted the flexi-pricing method, wherein based on either the day or the time of the day we vary the price points. So we even offer tickets at Rs 50, with the maximum being Rs 150. However, some states do not allow flexi-pricing. Ideally, we would like to adopt this method of pricing across India.
PVR has used the services of different design specialists for its multiplex in different cities. Is this a conscious attempt to avoid replicating the environment across all areas of operations?
Yes. We have used the services of different design specialists ranging from London-based Jestico & Whiles to even our in-house team. We would like the ambience at each multiplex to reflect the culture of the city. For instance, we have used red in Hyderabad to represent its bright and colourful environment. In Delhi, we have used black and blue.
nashcode March 16th, 2006, 03:53 AM Coimbatore is a fast emerging metropolis.
IT is boom time in Coimbatore. The textile industry, foundries, agriculture, poultry farming, real estate and Information Technology, among other sectors, are touching new highs in growth. The gloom that engulfed Coimbatore from 1995 to 1999 in the wake of the recession and the high interest regime that hit the textile and foundry industries hard, the slump in tea prices, the bomb blasts and the collapse of retail trade has vanished. The city's tradi tional entrepreneurial spirit has re-asserted itself. Coimbatore is an emerging metropolis today, eager to cast off its tier-II city status.
The entire "Kongu Nadu" region with Coimbatore as the hub is witnessing an economic resurgence. Manufacturers in Coimbatore have stopped exporting yarn because they get a better price for it in the domestic market. Tirupur, the garment town, is doing good business. Karur, the city of home textiles, is brimming with export orders. Salem is doing well in fabrics. As for the adjoining Nilgiris district, tea prices are ruling high.
Coimbatore has a long history of manufacturing textiles, pumpsets and castings. What is important is it has achieved the leadership in textile and engineering industries even though it has no public sector undertakings. Its industrious and enterprising citizens have helped Coimbatore gain a reputation as an industrial hub....

COIMBATORE is walking tall again. Its residents would like to forget what happened to the city and its industry and trade from 1995 to 1999 as "a bad dream". The shock and distress caused by the recession, skewed tax policies and the serial bomb blasts of 1998 has given way to a jubilant mood.
Four major groups of industries hold the key to Coimbatore's economy. They are textiles, engineering, a variety of small industrial units, and tea estates in the adjoining Nilgiris district. The textile industry is the cornerstone of the economy.
http://www.frontlineonnet.com/stories/20060324001908600.htm
COIMBATORE today accounts for 48 per cent of the pumpsets manufactured in India. What turned the region to this business was its geography. Much of the land in the district is arid and is fit only for cotton cultivation, the water table being several hundreds of feet below the ground. Foundries came up for manufacturing pump components. Next came units manufacturing automobile components. Now Coimbatore produces wind turbines too.

Precot Mills, Coimbatore to invest Rs.20 crore to set up a facility in Pollachi to house 32,256 spindles acquired from Litton a Philippines textile mill in an e-auction for Rs. 20 crore. The Pollachi facility is expected to start operation by January 2007.
Since Indian textile mills have to wait for about 32-36 months to purchase textile machinery from domestic players leading to a long gestation period, Precot Mills struck a deal with the Philippines-based mill to buy their machinery. Countries like Philippines, which enjoyed an advantage in textile exports due the quota, are now finding it difficult to cope with as the quota regime has been phased out.
Precot’s merger with Meridain Industries will enable Precot to enhance its spinning capacity by 25%. The synergies resulting from the merger would enhance the earnings per share in view of the better profitability of Meridian.
While the Precot’s proposed forward integration into garments has now been rescheduled for April 2007 compared to the earlier plan of September 2006 in view of the expansion in the spinning and weaving areas. The capital expenditure for the next three financial years for the merged entity has been planned at Rs 140 crore.

Link to news... (http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2006/03/21/stories/2006032101920200.htm)
Speaking to Business Line, Mr Vijayakumar said of the proposed Rs 200 crore, Rs 60-Rs 80 crore would be used to repay high-cost short-term debt. The rest of the money (Rs 120 crore-Rs 130 crore) will be utilised for capital expenditure in the next three years.
On the mode of raising the required funds, he said the company proposed to raise around Rs 60 crore by way of long-term debt. Another Rs 20 crore would be raised through a preferential offerto a financial institution.
The company would come out with a rights issue of optional convertible debentures of Rs 100 crore, whose ratio and pricing would be decided on Thursday. He said the company had initiated steps to build a forging plant in Coimbatore and land acquisition has been completed. The orders for machinery have been placed. Since the existing chain factory of LGB was working at 100 per cent capacity, it wanted to establish two new chain manufacturing units — one at Pune and another most probably at Uttaranchal.

Anniyan March 27th, 2006, 10:00 PM Riding the realty boom
Coimbatore is in the grip of a construction fever. Whether it is plush apartments or medium budget houses or commercial/office complexes, the city has not witnessed such a frenetic construction activity in the past as it is seeing now.
Always billed as one of the most liveable cities in the country, Coimbatore is finding that its core strength in the manufacturing sector, particularly in engineering and textiles, has given a new impetus to the real estate industry. More importantly, it has given it greater stability, as Coimbatore has also emerged as a global outsourcing hub for the manufacturing sector. But what has made the realty industry really hot is the fact that there is an air of expectancy about the rush of IT majors to Coimbatore.

He said one mall would come up on the Brooke Bond road and apart from the multiplex being put up by the Essel group another was expected to come up within the city. Any shopping mall would need 4-5 acres of land and some of the potential investors were looking for ideal locations.
Anniyan March 27th, 2006, 10:06 PM The boom in real estate business in Coimbatore has brought in its wake an influx of builders from other cities and market players indicate that a few from abroad too might pitch their tent here.

MaduraiSelvam April 1st, 2006, 09:45 PM IT firms seeking space in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: "A lot of Information Technology companies are showing interest in Coimbatore. If someone creates the infrastructure, the space will be easily occupied," says Jayakumar Ramdass, Chairman of Confederation Indian Industry, Coimbatore zone, about the demand for space in Coimbatore from IT companies.
Potential centre
With nearly 250 IT and IT-enabled service companies already operating in the district, bigger IT companies have started looking at Coimbatore as a potential centre. However, what is needed is infrastructure (such as fully-furnished buildings), he says.
Plans confirmed
A couple of big companies have confirmed their plans for Coimbatore. And, with the enquiries received by the CII from IT companies, "we foresee a requirement of 10 lakh to 12 lakh sq.ft right now," he said. The average minimum space requirement for a Business Process Outsourcing firm is 50,000 to one lakh sq.ft and for a software development company it is 30,000 to 50,000 sq.ft.
Facilities
According to him, "it is not just space. It is like plug and play. The companies are looking at ready availability of all facilities so that they can start operations in, say, a week." The city currently does not have such large spaces and facility required by the IT companies.
Viable projects
In order to encourage more private initiatives, the CII planned to hold discussions with local builders. "May be it is scepticism about the potential here that is holding back local promotion of such projects," he said. These were commercially viable projects and there was a demand for space by IT companies. Roughly, the cost of construction and finishing (excluding land cost) would work up to Rs. 2,000 a sq. ft, he said.

Another indication of growing interest in the city is the spurt in the number of flights to and from Coimbatore. From a handful of daily flights, as many as 19 flights operate here and more airlines are eyeing the Coimbatore skies. There has been phenomenal growth in the passenger traffic in the past two years — from around 24,000 in December 2003 to 41,000 in December 2004 and 60,062 in December 2005.

ganeshram April 21st, 2006, 03:31 PM U.S. company to start unit in Coimbatore (from hindu on apr 21)
COIMBATORE: A team of five entrepreneurs from the United States had discussions with office-bearers of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association here recently. The team evinced interest in setting up a balloon factory here. The entrepreneurs have identified land at Kinathukadavu, near here, said J. Balu, president of the association. The team visited Coimbatore six months ago and came again this month. The association had helped the U.S. entrepreneurs identify land and also guided them on other issues to start a unit here.
According to him, more industries are likely to start operations here owing to availability of labour. Mr. Balu said the salary that a welder received in Europe for five hours was the monthly payment made to a welder here. Though not a large number of foreign investments had come here so far, starting a couple of units would stimulate further investment, he said.

Anniyan April 29th, 2006, 11:30 PM For decades Coimbatore progressed on its own, through contributions from its industrial houses in the form of jobs, education and health care. With rapid development taking shape, it is time for active Government involvement in providing quality basic infrastructure than effecting cosmetic changes.
THERE'S NO stopping its growth. The city seems to strain at stretching its boundaries beyond the 105.5-sq.km. Such is the hectic pace at which apartments are being built in the city; there is very little space left for independent houses.
If builders are into projects for apartments in the suburban Vadavalli or Thudialur, it is definitely an indication of land becoming scarcer for independent houses in these areas also. This, in turn, points to the near-blurring speed at which houses are coming up around the city.
On the commercial side, private players are planning Information Technology (IT) parks even as the city waits for the one planned by the Government. Other types of commercial ventures such as multiplexes, theme parks and even shopping malls are on the cards.
The communal tension attributed to Coimbatore's economic slump (apart from recession in the textile sector) is no more a factor. With the economy looking up on all fronts, Coimbatore is at a crucial point - where development will have to be holistic and necessarily include infrastructure.
"Coimbatore has developed on its own, without much Government help" is the famous refrain of every section of society in this region; mostly told with a great sense of pride - and rightly so - by the industrialists.
Industrial families have provided scores of employment opportunities through their units, educational institutions and hospitals. The last two have earned Coimbatore prominence in the list of the country's top-notch institutions. It has even a private medical college and hospital. Business process outsourcing firms are already here. And, now, IT players are set to come in.
Having come thus far `on its own', Coimbatore now demands serious attention, and not a mere cursory glance in terms of development of infrastructure. Other than declaring Coimbatore as the next IT destination, nothing much seems to emerge from the Government's side.
