Oazo... I'll visit there soon ^^

Something strange.
After my second visit i believe that even for Japan, Tokyo is a very modern city.
Look at the pic of Oazo. I never find something like this in Osaka.
Maybe Tokyo is a city that doesn`t belong to the earth :D

Coooool pics!!!!
What part of Tokyo is OAZO at? what is Oazo? i never seen any pictures of it before! i will have to visit it when i go to japan.
I have to agree with Tom, tokyo seem to change everyday. i bet by 2040 or so tokyo would look like Chicago in I Robot, or Washington DC in Minority Report.

What part of Tokyo is OAZO at?

It's on the Western (also known as "Marunouchi") side of Tokyo Station. You can see in the pictures that the word "marunouchi" is just above the word "oazo" on the building facade. Another clue is that you can also see the sign for the entrance to the Otemachi subway station, which is right next to Tokyo Eki.

Here's a page which also shows the street location: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3037.html :)

thanks for the info. i think i should study tokyo rail system maps.

how did tokyo get so big? i know its a collection of small cities towns and villiages, but how did it populous get so high? japan isn't exactly a country of plenty full jobs hence the limited resources the

Yikes...hate to break it to you, but that's an incinerator.

That's the Ariake seisou koujou ( 有明清掃工場 ).

Never the less that is the best looking incinerator tower I have ever seen.....

;)

Like a giant oblong mushroom sprouting up in Tokyo's reclaimed waterfront, the Ariake Sports Center is an unmistakable building. The mushroom look is enhanced by the fact that it's nestled next to a tall smokestack -- the modern-day equivalent of a tree trunk. That cozy relationship is useful because the sports facility's swimming pool is heated with the excess heat from the incinerator.

Not everyone buys the mushroom analogy, and some think of the sports facility as a spaceship. From ground level, that's easy to understand considering the ornamentation on the ends that look like thrusters, a lateral band of windows, and the height of the saucer section that makes it look like it's floating or walking over the landscape.

It's "aircraft warning light",maybe.
The light to makes it recoginize the existence of tall buillding which obstructs it to the aircraft.

You can write in japanese with only Windows XP, you don't need any other programs.

In the config panel, there's an icon about regional or language parameters. You can install Japanese there. Search for tutorials or faq on google.

my computer cant write in kanji. what program do you use to write in those characters?

Before I found out how to install IME (I spent many hours trying to do it :D ) I used other programs such as NJStar and Wakan, both have good dictionaries. I recomend you Wakan, it has more things to do than NJStar, but NJStar is more easy to use.

But if you want to install IME and you have XP, do what alex92 said. In regional or language parameters (I have the Spanish version, so words between "" might not be the same) In "Languages" Label click the button "Details". There, in the top box select "Japanese - Microsoft IME Standard". Then when I executed Word, IME was Installed (or I think so, maybe it were the Japanese options for MWord). To write in japanese Select it from the Language bar (doble click in the "Start bar" --> "Tool bars" --> "Languaje bar"). If you have a doubt please ask me. :)

Tokyo from afar...in Kawasaki, right across the river that is the border (I think) of Kanagawa and Tokyo prefectures (if you look closely to the right you can see the lights on the river). It was about 3am or so...my friend and I were on top of a hill in some park. It was completely dark but luckily I could keep my digicam still and it came out okay (considering it was pitch black out)

The best part of Tokyo - The real central Tokyo (Chiyoda and Chuo Ward) around Tokyo Station. It's the old city center. It's the most expensive, beautiful and cleanest area in Tokyo. The places like Shibuya and Ikebukuro will look like crap comparing to this. All the shops, boutiques and restaurants around here are of very best.

Marunouchi Shuttle bus (free) goes around the central area

sorry

I visited both too... are you just basing your overall opinion on each city by the amount of skyscrapers there? that's kinda weird...

Seoul is alright, but Tokyo has more to offer for me.

Someone might have posted but West Shinjuku 3 chome's 338m building (plus 245mX2, 190mX1).

I love the view of Park Hyatt from Koushugaido street (Shinjuku station south exit) so would be nice when this building gets built in 2010 to make the better skyline.

I've been to both cities and they are very different. Some parts of Seoul is somewhat like Tokyo such as Kangnam area but most of Seoul is very different from Tokyo. Also buildings in Seoul are much smaller than Tokyo in terms of sheer size rather than height. There are many buildings in Tokyo that are just incredibly massive. You dont see much of that in Seoul.

Quite true, except for maybe Seoul's WTC.

Huge buildings in Tokyo need that massive base of theirs to withstand earthquakes, I assume.

Not all of downtown Tokyo looks like Kangnam ;) There's some old areas which need a facelift as well, just like in any big city. I find the main difference between Seoul and Tokyo is with the suburbs where most people live: these look and feel very different.

HDTV
October 17th, 2005, 04:00 PM
I said kangnam looks SOMEWHAT LIKE TOKYO. Central Tokyo is definitely much nicer than Kangnam. But Kangnam is still pretty nice, if you went there you would think Korea is a very rich country instead of having only US14,000 per capita GDP. This is because disparity between Kangnam and rest of Seoul is huge, hence why apartment prices run over US$2 million for large units.

Tokyo on the other hand, is much more uniform than Seoul. Central Tokyo is very upscale and the outerlying areas such as Yokohama is still well developed. Look at Inchon, its pretty underdeveloped for a port city although New Songdo City should be nice.

princeofseoul
October 17th, 2005, 05:19 PM
I understood your previous post, thank you: my opinion stands. About the GDP to compare the wealth of countries, I stopped believing in it a long time ago. I find this only gives a rough estimate within the right order of magnitude.

PS: Incheon is finely developped with lots of nice aparts/houses in most places, except for the touristic area near the port.

My favourite subway station: Roppongi 1 chome (actually this is near where I live) on Nanboku Line. This is just an amazing place. And the green glass tower, Izumi Garden Tower next to it is also very beautiful. Roppongi is one of the most sophisticated places in Tokyo for sure.

I just got back from my first visit to Tokyo. It was everything I expected and more. I love the fact that the world's largest city is lacking of many of the problems that are often associated with big cities, such as crime and poverty. I would love to go back - six days wasn't enough!

PS - My jaw dropped when I went to Roppongi Hills and saw that model. They also have a model of Manhattan there that is pretty awesome too. Those models were more impressive than the actual view from the Roppongi Hills Tower!

I though Tokio´s tallest building had at least 100 floors...

It is true that high rise buildings will never build in chuo-ku because of Haneda airport??
I think that tokyo bay is a beautiful place and it needs an high rise landmark.
Anyway I really would like to see how it will be in 2010...

Yeah i lived with a japanese family in Yoga, 11 minutes from Shibuya by subway. It was like a village. Everyone riding bikes around, hardly any cars. Beautiful trees etc, but still it had great pubs, karaoke, arcades etc. And the centre of tokyo was 10 minutes away.

It was honestly the best time of my life, im going back this winter for another 3 months.

A good summary of TOKYO pix! Thank you.

東京の都市プランの主な問題 - 第三の経済大国、変なスカイライン

Although Tokyo is arguably the city with the most amazing technology, Tokyo is built with an inadequate plan. The Tokyo-do hasn't done much for the city's development plans.

We know that Tokyo has a lot of eathquakes but Tokyo could have been a lot better and more organised if Tokyo-do was more interested. An example is that Tokyo does not really have a CBD. Nice-looking skyscrapers are all spread through Shinjuku, Shiodome, Odaiba, Shibuya, Shinagawa... and so on. Considering Japan's economy is the third largest, its capital could have had more organised districts, therefore, a better skyline.

Whatever Tokyo-do does, however, individual buildings in Tokyo are very well-designed. I still love this city for it grand size, brisk atmosphere and great culture. Well the conclusion is... Damn Ishihara and his fellow Tokyo-do civil servants. They don't deserve anything

Hi, nice thought.
But just so you do, it is not that Tokyo has no plan. It is that Tokyo-do has well-designed plan, but never actually fully implemennted. For example, the Tokyo highway plan is only finished by 20% of actual plan. This is the main reason why Tokyo is the only capital that huge trucks are on the highway at the centre of tokyo.

Wow thanks! I never knew even expressways in Tokyos are managed by companies, and not just a main government transportation body. Everything is so business here. Thats pretty interesting to note... So the cars must pay high tolls too right? Thats why its not popular? After all, it does pass through a dense area and the only reason for me not to use it would be if it had high toll rates...

Anyone here have pics of the latest highway/expressways that are built (or being built) in Tokyo?
