There was a discussion about this on the Japan Mass Transit Thread but I wanna bring this up here as well.
The newest set of developments in the Tokyo (and one of the newest in Japan). An area that will help hasten ultra-modernization in Japan and will serve as a model for urban modernization to other parts of the country.
An area they call....... Yurikamome.

Clean looking signs that are visible and well-managed overpasses for pedestrians
http://www.eonet.ne.jp/~building-pc/photo-tokyo-air/yurikamome-2.JPG
Roads and bridges that are SPANKING NEW!!!
From just two lanes, it branches out to not one, not two, not even five but SIX LANES!!! Especially for being new, you can expect that traffic will be a thing of the past (unlike in older areas). Heck, they even have guiding lines in the intersection while you make a left or right turn. Traffic lights are also new so expect them to be working in perfect order (unlike those from the early 90s)
http://www.eonet.ne.jp/~building-pc/photo-tokyo-air/yurikamome-3.JPG
100 years of Japanese public works/highways construction expertise combined with the latest in Japanese construction materials along with the latest in Japanese construction technologies & techniques are put in to the construction of these fine roads.
If the Japanese were able to be a build a highway fourty years ago that was able to last even til to date (ie. MacArthur Highway here in RP) in spite of heavy rains + scorching heat + thousands of vehicles that have been passing there for four decades, then what more with these new roads & highways???
Expect these to last for hundreds of years without any kind of repair.
Sidewalks and pedestrian crossing zones were well-planned and are strategically-placed.
http://www.eonet.ne.jp/~building-pc/photo-tokyo-air/yurikamome-4.JPG
You can even see that construction is still on-going. More surprising developments are still to come.

Sidewalks were built using the best construction materials & hardware. Seamless brick-laying and asphalting/cementing of these sidewalks were done with utmost precision & accuracy. The result are sidewalks that are smooth, safe and fun to walk on.
If you look on the left side you see that the roads even have red thingys on it.

Spaces here are well-opened. Removes the image of cramped alleys, super-narrow walkways and places where you can't even fit.

How come the Japanese have become less ambitious when it comes to infrastructure projects than ever before? Based from the current construction boom in Tokyo, it might dissapoint you that Japanese have become less ambitious when it come to new projects.
Long before, Japan was the envy of the world for mega-projects. But today, China has greatly overshadowed this once overly speculative construction market. One might say that the Japanese have become naive about the future. Why?! Japan is in a state of solid economic recovery! Why can't they build infrastructure projects like even the Koreans. Yes, Korean projects are, as of the moment, more ambitious and of a larger scale than their Japanese counterparts (i.e Incheon International Airport and the rest of "The Winged City" with 5,610 hectares as opposed to the disaster that is the Narita International Airport).

Korean projects are more ambitious? I've never heard that belief before. Aside from Incheon, does Korea have a single decent airport? (Gimpo, Gimhae, Jeju are all outdated, diddy and shabby.)
NRT, HND, KIX are all being expanded, Brandnew Cyubu's 2nd phase, Kobe's 2nd phase and Tokyo's 3rd international airport starts before long.

@ sdtj No...no. I don't mean to insult the Japanese. I'm crazy about Japan. I love Japan's infrastructure. What I was trying to say is that according to my ignorant point of view, I find Korean as well as Chinese projects to be of bigger scale than the Japanese urban re-developments of recent years. I would have hoped that Japan would once again build large projects that might also be of the same scale as in South Korea and People's Republic of China.
Yes, I know Tokyo is probably the most developed piece of urban settlement on the face of the planet (and the largest-scaled as well). I also know that Tokyo is experiencing a construction boom. Hell, I should not even call this a boom (since it is normal in Tokyo that over a thosand high-rise or mid-rise buildings are being constructed)! All I was saying is that these projects are not as grandeous as those being constructed in Shanghai and Seoul.
Of coarse, this is of my limited knowledge about how I perceive developments on these three East Asian economic giants. Please enlighten me on this. :)

Many of the white-elephant projects during the economy was growing make huge quantities of deficits. Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Project, Seikan Tunnel, Tokyo City Hall...
Not all are useless but uneconomical. The government did not care that because of the increasing means, but not now. And now Koizumi is advancing their privatization.

Waah, the #1 Starbucks Coffee branch in Japan! Wohoo!!!
On-topic: Anyways, I guess to each is his own.
But in my case, there are really a lot places here in Japan that look out of this world. Places that would inspire any modernist/futurist.
Anyways, if you have been paying to Japanese news, you would know that after years of economic depressions and downfalls, the Japanese economy has started bouncing back since January 2006 beginning with the scrapping of the Central Bank's 5-year old Monetary Policy.
What this means to you?: If the Japanese economy starts bouncing back, then you can expect even more.
Heck, even during the early 90s when Japan was still having tons of economic problems, they built tons of mind-blowing structures (ie. Kyoto Station, the Sakae Mall in Nagoya, the Tokyo International Forum and Roponggi Hills just to name a few). And this was during the time when the Japanese economy was still in bad shape.
But with the recent happenings since January of this year in the Japanese economy, things may be waaay better than ever. Now that their economy is bouncing back to improved health, you may even see newer buildings and constructions.
With the Japanese government having more funds this time for modern infrastructure, it may convince Japanese auto makers to lessen their "CM trips" abroad.
If you don't get what I mean, take a look at this picture.
http://www.honda.co.jp/CIVIC/photo-lib/image/photo01.jpg
That's an FD Civic for Japan/Taiwan/ASEAN.
In this case, it's supposed to be for the Japanese Car Market, but look at where that photo is taken. I asked in the World Forums and two guys said that the pic is taken from the Milwaukee Art Museum in America (USA).
Here's another one:
http://www.honda.co.jp/ACCORD/photo-lib/image/photo04.jpg
Japan-made Honda Accord JDM version which is for the Japan market, but look at the location. It's front of a hotel, Sofitel Lisbon even (which is in Portugal)
http://press.nissan-global.com/COMMON/IMAGES/CURRENT_JP/TIIDALATIO/LOW/tiidalatio_20.jpg
Probably from Latvia
http://www.honda.co.jp/ZEST/photo-lib/image/photo04.jpg
Definitely in Australia
I'm not saying there anything wrong with doing this. It's just by the fact that based on 90% of all Japanese car commercials, ALL of them were done/shot outside Japan.
The automakers do it as if they don't want to make a car commercial at home. Heck, the people in those commercials are often foreigners AND NOT JAPANESE.
Thankfully, things are changing (or at least balancing out) this time.
Honda Partner:
http://www.honda.co.jp/PARTNER/photo-lib/image/photo01.jpg
http://www.honda.co.jp/PARTNER/photo-lib/image/photo02.jpg
http://www.honda.co.jp/PARTNER/photo-lib/image/photo03.jpg
http://www.honda.co.jp/PARTNER/photo-lib/image/photo04.jpg
You'd be surprised though that all of these are done in Japanese soil. Surroundings as clean as in Singapore, buildings that look like those in France CBD and in Australia, roads that are as wide as those in Austria & Czech Republic
And I've seen Nissan Japan using the Tokyo International Forum building twice as photo backdrops for the Cube Cubic and the Skyline Coupe.
Yes, you can pretty much say that as of January 2006, Japan now has everything that the Jap automakers need:
1) Modern Buildings (ie. Roponggi Hills, Fukuoka, Kyoto Station)
2) New roads and highways with no traffic (ie. Yurikamome)
3) Buildings structures based on ancient European design (ie. Little Italy, Shiodome)
4) People such as Japanese personalities
5) Foreigners (need foreign people, Japan is also home to hundreds of foreign residents)
IMO Japan now has everything that automakers need for their TV-CMs. It means that whatever they look for abroad, they can find it right in their homeland. They automakers save money on trips abroad, importation of vehicle(s) abroad for filming/shooting, hiring a foreign camera crew/production company.
All they need is available right here at "home".

Yeah, you're right.
I just checked with Wikipedia and for the benefit of the rest, I'll just paste the opening text:
"New Transit Yurikamome (新交通ゆりかもめ, Shinkōtsū Yurikamome?), formally the Tokyo Waterfront New Transit Waterfront Line (東京臨海新交通臨海線, Tōkyō Rinkai Shinkōtsū Rinkai-sen?) is an automated guideway transit service operated by the Tokyo Waterfront New Transit Corporation, connecting Shinbashi to Toyosu, passing through the artificial island of Odaiba in Tokyo, Japan, a market in which it competes with the cheaper but less glamorous Tokyo Waterfront Railway (Rinkai Line).
The line is named after the black-headed seagull (yurikamome in Japanese), a common denizen of Tokyo Bay and the official prefectural bird."
So that means that Yurikamome is the name of the train railway service for the Waterfront area in Tokyo.
The whole article can be found here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yurikamome)
http://www.yurikamome.co.jp/img/title.gif
It now makes sense as to why the JOC would want to select the Waterfront area as the preferred location when the Olympic games take place in Japan (either 2016 or 2020).

Tokyo is really changing so fast. I went to Tokyo lately after 3 month and I could recognize that the booming is still on process! How the city looks is changing everyday! Especially the bay area is full of new projects.

How small does a person look like in those pics?
If that's the case, then the proportion between the size of one person and the number of buildings/establishments in that pic is just.............OMFG

Mid Town tower and Roppongi Hills are similar project? which companies will be host on the mid town tower?Roppongi Hills was planned by Mori Building, the redevelopment company. They are now building the Shanghai World Financial Center.
On the other hand, the main host of Midtown project is Mitsui, just one of the zaibatsu.
Anyway, both projects are very similar.
I can see there is no car on the street, is Akihabara a walking street???Cars are shut out of Akihabara on holidays.

Public housing in Shinonome, Tokyo. Sorry for the comments in Spanish, as usual Im too lazy to translate them :P
-------
Canal Court Shinonome

Speaking of which, since Google only specifies on the mass transit and not on the actual area itself.....
I do have a few questions (coldstar, Vapour and a few others can answer these):
1) How big is the entire Tokyo Waterfront Area?
2) The Tokyo Waterfront Area represents what portion of Tokyo (ie. how many percent, total land mass of Waterfront Area in regards to the whole city of Tokyo???)
3) Who was responsible for the creation of this whole Waterfront Area??? (which is considered as the biggest ever Neo-modernization urban project in Japan)
4) How many areas are their within the Waterfront Area? (ie. Ariake, Shiodome, Odaiba???)
5) Are there others areas in Japan trying to copy or follow the urban-modernization model of the "Waterfront" (aside from Osaka, Aichi in Nagoya and Fukuoka)
There may be other questions I mind but these FIVE basic questions are enough.
:)

"Waterfront Area" is a kind of vague word. I feel it's about artificial islands for non-industrial use, like Odaiba, Shinkiba, Yume no Shima, Ariake, Tatsumi, Shinonome, Harumi, Toyosu, Aomi, Tennnozu, etc..., and doesn't include Shiodome, but, of course, not all think so.
As Japan is thirsting for the land, the waterfront project like this is not unusual. You can see that when you look at the coastlines. However, it was until 1990 that these projects were profitable. The fact that Tokyo Waterfront Area was long empty shows this clearly.

@Blackraven
I read somewhere that the total area of reclaimed land in Tokyo bay is about 185 km2 (maybe only in Tokyo-to? I forgot) It is now a pretty big area compared to the rest of the city, but still "not that big". Anyway I'll post a thread regarding all these manmade islands some day this year, keep tuned :D

Codan Shinonome, Public housing in Tokyo. Once again in Spanish, I'm sorry :(
-----
Canal Court Shinonome

Hi all
i have an offer from a japanese firm and might be shifting to tokyo soon. Anyone in tokyo, can you advice my expected expenditure..ie housing cost, transport cost, living cost, etc. I am single.
How much does an appartment cost(say one room with attached kitchen and bath)?
How much is it for a monthly pass for the transport?
and above all, what is the average salary for a decent life in tokyo?
If i have posted in the wrong section, please advice me where to find these informations.
thanx.

akihabara the most underchanging city in Tokyo

Nor Akihabara neither Shinjuku represents Tokyo. They are just "a part of" Tokyo. Normally the people from Osaka believe they are the face of Tokyo.

average rent in tokyo 23-ward: 80,000 yens per month for a 30 m2 apartment. To live in a "mansion" (concrete construction, about 5 years old, good quality), it's 20-30% more for the same size. In the richest neighbourhoods (yoga, seijo, or inside JR yamanote line), add another 30%. The rent of bigger flats will scale with the m2.
transport: not a problem if you live inside JR yamanote line (about 130-190 yens per trip to go anywhere important). If you live outside, the monthly pass will vary between 6000 and 10000 yens to reach the JR yamanote line.
food: typically 400-900 yens per meal at the restaurants for something decent. For fancy dinners, 2000 to 4000 yens per meal. Rarely more.
average salary to live decently? Hmm.. for the same lifestyle as in Paris, count on spending 10-20% less or so per month....

Here's an interview which I found inspiring. Metropolis interviewing Mr. Minoru Mori and his latest finished project, Omotesando Hills.
Quite inspiring words there from Mr. Mori about his latest structural accomplishment.
-------------------------
The view from the Hills
Minoru Mori defends the Omotesando Hills development and reveals big plans for Tokyo
Tokyo is in the grip of a building boom; the city is being transformed. Omotesando Hills, which opens next weekend, is the latest piece of a much larger story, in which Minoru Mori, the developer, is only one player at a crowded table.
Tokyo Midtown Project, Akihabara Crossfield and a gaggle of new skyscrapers in Marunouchi are just a few of the major redevelopment projects, driven mainly by private developers, that are soon to come to completion. More are on the drawing boards. These mega-projects don’t only change the geography of the areas they sprout from; they also change their character. Omotesando Hills offers a model in miniature of the implications.
Omotesando is a very special street. The broad, tree-lined boulevard originating at the gates of Meiji Shrine is Tokyo’s premier urban catwalk. In recent years, it has become a glittering necklace given by Architecture to Fashion as a token of their glamorous international romance, studded with the contemporary jewels of the houses of Prada, Tods, Dior and Louis Vuitton. Take a few steps off the leafy sidewalks and you enter an intricate maze of tiny streets threading through a tissue of residences and small offices, sprinkled with a delightful variety of boutiques, restaurants and galleries. The atmosphere is cultured, unsullied by snobbery, creative but comfortable, intimate yet open. It is arguably the best setting for a contemporary urban lifestyle that Tokyo has to offer.
Within this neighborhood, something new and different has emerged. For the past two and a half years, shielded for much of the time behind the vertical turf of a plant-covered construction hoarding, Omotesando Hills has been climbing out of its deep hole in the ground.
The structure is far bigger than its streetward guise suggests, with half its 12-story bulk buried underground. It is the offspring of a consummation between Tadao Ando, undoubtedly Japan’s most famous living architect, and Mori, the powerful developer and self-described urban visionary behind Mori Building Co. Big, long and very imposing, it is also, in true Mori form, highly controversial.
In October, this journal published an attack on the development. Calling it “one of the cruelest pieces of architecture this city has seen,” Metropolis publisher Mark Devlin, an Omotesando resident, slammed the building and lambasted Mori for creating soulless environments that are “all noise and no content.” The article sparked a loud response from readers, many also critical of the building, some taking the opportunity to raise concerns about the jewel in Mori Building’s crown, Roppongi Hills.
As Minoru Mori prepares to open the doors of Omotesando Hills next Friday, Metropolis asked him to explain his vision for Tokyo.
What contribution do you want Omotesando Hills to make to the Jingumae area?
I hope that with this project the local area will exceed Ginza as a shopping area and become recognized as a center of fashion and art not only in Tokyo but in Japan and throughout Asia.
How does that fit in with Harajuku’s position as an international center of youth fashion and culture?
When I completed Laforet (built and owned by Mori Building), Harajuku wasn’t considered a big international-standard center of commerce or fashion. But after that, many brands started to open shops along the street, including Hanae Mori and Comme de Garçons—all the big names from the fashion world. However, it was an aggregation of individuals and somehow it lacked a core to attract people from all over the world, so I hope that Omotesando Hills will become such a core attraction. It’s going to be the eyes of the dragon. We say that when you draw a dragon you start with the head and body and only at the very end do you draw the eyes to complete it.
What efforts did Mori Building make to preserve the spirit of the old Dojunkai apartments?
The Dojunkai apartments epitomized the history of modern architecture in Japan. Omotesando was the first boulevard to be built in Japan. After the Great Kanto Earthquake people realized that we should build strong apartments to withstand such natural disasters, and these were the first such apartments built using cutting-edge technology of Japanese architecture at that time, and they became the model of all the other apartments in Japan.
By the end of the war the apartments remained but the torii gate to Meiji Shrine was burnt down. Later with the construction of Washington Heights (in what is now Yoyogi Park) it became the leading center for the introduction of American culture. It was in this atmosphere that the Dojunkai apartments became a sort of elite place to live, and they had an emotional attachment and history. Many people wanted to keep the apartments as they were, but it was decided to redevelop the whole area, so we wanted to create a new tradition to make it a convincing success.
When the old apartments were demolished there were 140 units, only 10 percent of which were being used as residences. Many were shops or other retail-related facilities and many were vacant. The buildings also faced possible collapse in the event of a major earthquake. They had faced the normal wear and tear over the years. Their seismic resistance wasn’t up to modern standards, and it was dangerous to leave them as they were. Some owners still wanted to keep living there as they were, but after the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995 many realized that they needed to move on and agreed to the redevelopment scheme. So it’s an uncanny coincidence that this site was built because of one earthquake and demolished because of another. The apartments were built in 1927 and knocked down in 2003, so they were in service for 75 years. Usually the average lifespan of a building in Tokyo is 25 years, so this is three times the average and about the same as London, I think.
How and why did you select Tadao Ando as the architect?
I thought we needed someone of Ando’s magnitude, a world-leading architect, to get wide support for the project.
In many countries, when a sensitive site is being redeveloped there is a public-tender competition process to facilitate public dialogue about the outcome. Why hasn’t Mori Building taken this approach?
No we haven’t taken that approach before. We choose our architects according to the specific site, environment or purpose of the development. But of course we have a very heated discussion internally before making a final decision, and we have a process of discussing these matters with landowners affected by the scheme and the people living nearby. So there is plenty of opportunity for these people to understand and get involved, we don’t just jump to our final decisions.
Moto Azabu Hills was designed by leading Japanese architect Shozo Uchii, who also designed the Imperial Palace. Some people think the goblet shape is rather odd, but it is quickly becoming a landmark. Atago Green Hills was designed by Cesar Pelli, and with the temple in the middle has a Buddhist theme, and the two towers resemble lotus buds about to bloom. At Roppongi Hills we employed many different architects: Kohn Pederson Fox for Mori Tower, Sir Terence Conran for the residential towers, Fumihiko Maki for the TV Asahi broadcasting headquarters, and others. I think we have been very successful choosing the best architects for the best places.
Even though Ando was a popular choice [for Omotesando Hills] there was a certain amount of opposition amongst the landowners who were concerned that his buildings were too fashionable for the area. But when it opens I think people will understand that it is going to be a site of cultural heritage for the future.
You are unusual among developers in promoting the role of “culture” in your commercial projects. Suntory Hall in the Ark Hills development of the mid-'80s and the Mori Art Museum atop Mori Tower are the two most celebrated examples. What is the function of culture in your developments?
The cities of the past were industrial cities, but today we need cultural cities that are international, comfortable to live and work in, and also fun to visit. I believe that only those sort of cities will thrive in the future. That is why I wanted Roppongi Hills to be the cultural heart of Japan. Ark Hills was mainly a financial center with a cultural aspect on the side, but at Roppongi Hills, culture is at the heart of the project.
In your Urban New Deal proposal for regenerating Tokyo, you say that you want to redevelop the whole city. Aren’t there any areas of Tokyo that you would keep as they are?
Since Roppongi Hills was completed, the adjacent areas have changed too, and this also would be true for other developments. I’m thinking about building five more Roppongi Hills-style developments in Tokyo in the next 15 years or so, and so those neighboring areas will inevitably change too. I’m not sure what will remain. The things I would like to keep are parks or historical sights—shrines and temples. But as for other residential and office areas, there is none that I would keep as they are right now.
Which areas of the city are you looking at for these new Roppongi Hills-style developments?
The NPO Council is now being established to debate and lay a plan for the redevelopment of central Tokyo. If they ask Mori Building to undertake any schemes, it should be around here, namely in Minato Ward. Governor [Shintaro] Ishihara has started planning a bid for the 2016 Olympics more than 50 years after the last games here in 1964. In bidding for the games the council wants to change the main street layout and infrastructure of Tokyo, and anything Mori Building does will fit into that citywide plan.
Even if we don’t get the Olympics we may have a major earthquake, so we need to rebuild the city sooner rather than later. This is the most important point. We shouldn’t just make Tokyo earthquake-proof by using the latest technology such as base isolation systems and vibration control systems. Tokyo shouldn’t be somewhere people need to escape in an earthquake but somewhere that can protect them, and where daily life can continue if it happens.
Roppongi Hills is the showcase for the concept you call “Vertical Garden Cities.” Is there anything you would change if you were building another Roppongi Hills-style development again?
Roppongi Hills isn’t the best we can do, and of course there are many things I would change if we did it again. But each site has its own specific requirements. In the case of Toriizaka, neighboring Roppongi Hills, if we develop that area it will be different, more multi-layered with retail and entertainment at the bottom and something more academic above, such as Toyo Eiwa school or The International House, both of which are there right now. And any residences or hotels on the site would also be different. And in the case of the Kanjo Loop Road No. 2 project, we plan to have buildings straddle the street. At Roppongi Hills we built Roku-Roku Plaza over the street, but for this project we are going to see a building actually above the street for a more efficient use of the area.
Mori Building’s website states: “Our mission is to create cities, and to nurture those cities together with their residents and other people who use them. In other words, we aim to be involved with almost every aspect of human life.” Why didn’t you choose politics as perhaps a more appropriate path to achieve your goals?
Politics is not my strong point. Personally I think the academic field needs more attention right now, and I have become a visiting professor at Tokyo Shuto University in order to prevent the spread of wrong ideas about city planning. So I would like to play a role in that area.
And finally, a lighter question—one that everyone would like to know the answer to: Why do you name all of your developments “Hills”?
Tokyo is roughly divided into the Shitamachi downtown area and Yamanote hillside area. Our recent developments are on the Yamanote side and often have slopes and hills as part of their geography. In the case of Omotesando Hills, it’s built on a slope but also it has an ascending spiral “hill” inside as well. And of course there are wonderful places around the world such as Beverly Hills which give the name a nice connotation. Perhaps I should change the name of the company to Mori Hills, too.
Even if people may hate him, his contributions to the improvement of Japan through Modern Architecture & Design are substantial. He shares the mission to modernize Japan through neo-urbanism projects such as these. He is one of many others that make a Japan a model of modernism not only at home but also to many others from abroad.
His contributions will help in human progress as we move forward to the future.

Very interesting article!!..
I think the booming is having now Tokyo is one of the reason why the land price is surging again in Japan...As the economy growth will be stronger in future, probably new buidlings will be added on the Tokyo skyline

Thanks

Go especially to sites like Shinjuku (lot of skyscrapers), Ikebukuro, Shibuya (shops, shops and sexy girls), Minato, my favourite ward, where you can find Roppongi, Tokyo Tower and you can go to Odaiba, and lot of places, I don't know in Tokyo you can see lot of things ;)
By the way silvermat, which part of Tokyo is your second pic?

One good skyscraper to go to is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building #1 in West Shinjuku. It's free to go up to the observation decks on the 45th floors.
The Mori building in Roppongi also has an observtation deck, but it was not free when I last visited.

Hello, Downtown Mark... well, I dont know if Barcelona has the most expensive residences, but certainly here in Spain we have a bubble in the housing market, with prices of residences going up almost 15% or even 20%year on year... so I think it is very possible for Barcelona, or Madrid.

Would love to visit Tokyo...but emmm its tooo expensive.
Whats the average cost of living for a bachelor, who is willing to cook food himself, no car/no parties/ no bars( well only sometimes), room plus bath with shared kitchen, etc etc?
I would say like it would cost some one around 600-700 euros in france.

amazing picture of the statue of liberty.
^It's not a copy, but a gift from France like the original in NYC.
__
On 22 December, 2000 the torch was lit on a replica of the Statue of Liberty erected at the Fuji Television headquarters in Tokyo. It stands 34-feet tall on Tokyo Bay. It is only 25% the size of the one in New York, but larger than the one in Paris which was lent to Tokyo in early 2000. It proved such a hit that Fuji TV built their own.

The government should tighten the regulations of the roof colors of the houses. I really really HATE the red/yellow/blue/green roofs!
They are the eyesore in Tokyo.
Traditional black roof and white wall is the best.

I guess those were just visions. In the german TV there was recently a docu about Skycity1000. They gave the project a relatively high chance (in contrary to e.g. the Millenium Tower) for being built and I thought you japanese forumers maye know a bit more abou it.

1. Sumitomo Estate is planning a new huge skyscraper in Roppongi. The building lot is the place Roppongi Price Hotel and IBM Japan HQ now occupy. Sumito bought these buildings by this month and is going to clear them for the new building.
2. Mori already purchased the adjoing huge land of current Roppongi Hills complex to build one more Roppongi Hills complex (2nd Roppongi Hills). The site for a new complex is to the east of current Roppongi Hills. It is said 2nd Roppongi Hills is composed of 3 skyscrapers.
3. Tokyo Prime Stage (joint venture of Tokyo Tatemono and Taisei Corp.) is to build a scraper (200m. 43 stories) in Otemachi. The site is now used as Mizuho Bank Building and Otemachi Financial Center, but is to be a vacant lot by 2009. In Otemachi, lots of building are planned to construct within a few years, so the landscape around there should change drastically.
the place new scraper to be built in Otemachi in near future.
