Hello, Downtown Mark... well, I dont know if Barcelona has the most expensive residences, but certainly here in Spain we have a bubble in the housing market, with prices of residences going up almost 15% or even 20%year on year... so I think it is very possible for Barcelona, or Madrid.

Hi Downtown Mark, hajimemashite ;)
We don't get many active forumers from Nagoya (or from anywhere else in Japan, for that matter) so that's why the thread is so quiet. I guess everyone is posting at 2ch :D
And, yeah I'm a moderator in love with Japan
Have a nice day Mark :)

Would love to visit Tokyo...but emmm its tooo expensive.

Whats the average cost of living for a bachelor, who is willing to cook food himself, no car/no parties/ no bars( well only sometimes), room plus bath with shared kitchen, etc etc?

I would say like it would cost some one around 600-700 euros in france.

^It's not a copy, but a gift from France like the original in NYC.

On 22 December, 2000 the torch was lit on a replica of the Statue of Liberty erected at the Fuji Television headquarters in Tokyo. It stands 34-feet tall on Tokyo Bay. It is only 25% the size of the one in New York, but larger than the one in Paris which was lent to Tokyo in early 2000. It proved such a hit that Fuji TV built their own.

The government should tighten the regulations of the roof colors of the houses. I really really HATE the red/yellow/blue/green roofs!
They are the eyesore in Tokyo.

(In Roppongi, Sumitomo is ready to construct another skyscraper.
Mori is also planning the construction of 2nd Roppongi Hills complex.)

(In Otemachi, another skyscraper (200m) is to be built in a few years by Tokyo Tatemono.)

Please elaborate :D

1. Sumitomo Estate is planning a new huge skyscraper in Roppongi. The building lot is the place Roppongi Price Hotel and IBM Japan HQ now occupy. Sumito bought these buildings by this month and is going to clear them for the new building.

2. Mori already purchased the adjoing huge land of current Roppongi Hills complex to build one more Roppongi Hills complex (2nd Roppongi Hills). The site for a new complex is to the east of current Roppongi Hills. It is said 2nd Roppongi Hills is composed of 3 skyscrapers.

3. Tokyo Prime Stage (joint venture of Tokyo Tatemono and Taisei Corp.) is to build a scraper (200m. 43 stories) in Otemachi. The site is now used as Mizuho Bank Building and Otemachi Financial Center, but is to be a vacant lot by 2009. In Otemachi, lots of building are planned to construct within a few years, so the landscape around there should change drastically.

My God! With all the developments that are about to take place, isn't Roppongi gonna get really, really congested and saturated with shopping areas at this stage? What with Second Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown Tower, and the original Roppongi Hills cannibalizing each other's business.

But, then again, this area is in the center of activity and the hippest place in the entirety of Tokyo...the largest, most ecclectic, and overblown metropolis on the face of the planet.

yes, I really think tokyo is still in its infancy. It`s really great news for tokyo and tokyo skyline...Lately the real estate is sooo booming that one of the reason why the BOJ (bank of Japan) decided to fix the interest to 0.25 is because there is a bubble...called mansion bubble or Tokyo bubble due to the high buildings constructions. So I think the projects are so many because in future the interest rates will surely be higher.

Gutted that the Sofitel in Ueno is to be demolished - I'll have to stay a night there before they deconstruct it.

Is it just me or is the Otemachi/Yaesu/Nihombashi starting rival Shinjuku physically. With the 300m+ blocks proposed it appears that Nihombashi will soon have a proper skyline a la Nishi-Shinjuku.

I wish there was a bit more creativity though in Tokyo's scrapers; almost all of them are boxes or subtle variations on the theme.

I think the new Sony HQ in Shiodome is stunning however...

OMG Tokyo has lot of buildings and it's so high tech but why don't they build a tall building

Probably due to Japan being an earthquake zone and this is why more than 90% of Japan's structures are UNDER the 50-storey/floor count.

But then again...

The Mori building is at 54 storeys/floors tall which breaks the trend of only constructing towers/structures that are under the 50-floor/story count.

So again, it may not be that evident BUT IT IS POSSIBLE (to build buildings that go past 50 floors in Japan).

For reference, the upcoming Tokyo Midtown Tower will be around 50-60 storeys tall further enforcing the facts that there are some exceptions to the rule.

----------------------------------

P.S.

Waaaah, Omotesando Hills looks awesome.

It's like a high-tech work of art and modernism. Plus the fact that it also houses high-end stores. A truly wonderful residential/mixed-use medium-sized complex.

Critics and naysayers of this building should be screwed. Minoru Mori has done a lot to create Omotesando Hills. The fact that he has done this shows that he wants to help Japan become more modern. If he was selfish, he could just spend all that money and build a the most-expensive house in Nagoya and use it all for himself.

BUT he didn't.

Instead, he put it in creating Omotesando Hills and along with friend and partner, Architect Tadao Ando, they created this modern complex with a vision for it to be the "Champs-Elysees" of the 21st century.

Screw critic Mark Devlin of Metropolis magazine who said that this building has a poor, monolithic design, too overly commercial and has a poor environment.

Whatever dude. How about you? Let's see if you can create a shopping complex better than Omotesando Hills and show it to me? This is truly pathetic.

Well to simply cut it short, both Minoru Mori and Tadao Ando are heroes in giving the public inspiration through modern and neo-urbanist structures and buildings and this is what they have done with Omotesando Hills.

Anyone who naysays and gives utterly negative comments about it should be shot in the head because these two great men did it not only for themselves but for the public. As I say, they inspire others through their gifts and talents of architecture, design and modernism.

That's about it and I apologize if I made a speech there

^^ Wow, great shots you got there, vapour! I enjoyed and loved all of them.

Yokohama is stunningly beautiful and breath-taking, indeed!

As usual, Japanese public areas (even the public food areas) are sqeaky clean.

Thanks for the pics. :cheers2:

P.S. Why don't you paste your pics at the Greater Tokyo article at Wikipedia. The pictures there are extremely outdated.

and thanks for the pic of Kawasaki Musashikosugi.
Recently another big project of Musashikosugi was revealed.

Does anyone know how tall is the *massive* building u/c over Shin-Yokohama station? I guess it's around 100 metres.

JR Tokai's shinkansen Shin-Yokohama station will be only 75m (19 stories).
Takashimaya department Store will move in.

Currently redevelopments of Musashikosugi are under way mainly in South Exit area. (18 scrapers are now under construction, including 59 floor residential tower.)
But last week, new projects by 3 different companies were revealed. They are 7.3 hectares, all in North Exit, near Kosugi Tower Place. A station of Kawasaki City Subway is due to be built there.

Matsuzakaya Department Store settles the dispute about the height restriction in Ginza by self-sacrifice!

A couple years ago, Matsuzakaya Department Store Ginza adevertised the redeveloping of the store into 190m building. But the plan raised the strong protest movement among the store keepers in Ginza. Then, they slapped the height restriction in Ginza, that is only 56m !!.
Last night, Matsuzakaya made an announcement that the new department store would be only 56m high (only 15 floors above ground.) instead of 190m. Matsuzakaya conceded EVERYTHING to the store owners in Ginza.
New Matsuzakaya is being designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, famous as the architect of the MoMa in NY and Nissan new HQ in Yokohama.
Mitsukoshi Department Store is also plannning the new store in Ginza, but obviouly impossible to build the high rise.

It's cold in the day but very warm at night.

This is indeed the LARGEST museum in Japan.

Speaking of which, don't forget this date:

On Friday, February 9th, Dr. Kisho Kurosawa (the architect of the facility) will be hosting an architectural conference at the NACT building itself as part of the exhibition entitled "Kisho Kurokawa: From the Age of the Machine to the Age of Life".

The conference will take place from 18:00-20:00 (6 pm-8pm Japan time) and it will be held at the Lecture Hall located on the 3rd Floor.

Admission is FREE :)

I suggest that every SSC forumer who lives/resides in Japan to attend his conference. You might even learn a thing or two about architecture, engineering and design. :)

Tokyo is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo under-represented in these forums. While non-Alpha cities like Dubai, Miami, or Los Angeles have there own respective sub-forum...this ultra-city only has two threads to speak-off in this forum. >(

I REALLY LOVE HOW IN JAPAN AND ESPECIALLY IN TOKYO YOU CAN STILL FIND OLD (OVER 100 YEARS OLD) STRUCTURES AND NEW BUILDINGS IN THE SAME CITY BLOCK. MANY OTHER LARGE CITIES IN THE WORLD THEY JUST DESTROY SIMPLE HOMES AND OTHER BUILDINGS FOR NEW THINGS.
I THINK IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO PRESERVE THESE BUILDINGS BECAUSE THEY ARE PART OF JAPAN HISTORY.:okay:

Actually most buildings in Tokyo are built after WWII. World War 2 basically destoryed the entire city with fires and bombing. Then before that there was the great Kanto earthquake of 1921 (I think that's the year) and many others. Tokyo has been completely destroyed so many times, not very much old still remains. That house is likely just built to look old.

There are a lot of houses like that even on the artificial islands inside Tokyo Bay if you walk around the residential portions.

Architect Kisho Kurokawa To Run In Tokyo Gov. Race

It looks like his motto is:

"Long live the "construction" era of Japan."

Mr. Kurokawa: "The construction boom in this country will NEVER END and we'll make sure that we'll continue this for centuries and even up until the end of time. In short, till then, we'll NEVER STOP building."

Roppongi has begun to change from the latest trendy town to the cutting-edge art center of Tokyo

National Art Center, Tokyo (Jan.2007)
designed by Kisho Kurokawa, who also designed the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Inaugural "Living in the Art of the 20th Centure and Beyond" is now showing. (From Paul Cezanne, Marcel Duchamp to Jasper Johns and Corenelia Parker)
http://kenplatz.nikkeibp.co.jp/free/NEWS/20060922/131969/KP060922nact.JPG

Mori Contemporary Art Museum (2003)
designed by Richard Gluckman, who is famous as architect of Whitney Museum of American Art in NY.
It often hosts great exhibitions of architectures such as Le Corbusier.

Suntory Museum of Art (Mar.2007)
designed by Kengo Kuma, one of Japan's 4th Generational Architects of Postwar.
(needless to say, Kenzo Tange is representative of 1st G.
Fumihiko Maki and Kisho Kurokawa belong to 2nd G.
Tadao Ando and Toyo Ito are the architects of the3rd G.)

Suntory Museum has been the great collection of Japanese and Eastern traditional arts and treasures.
It has moved from Akasaka to Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown.

The size of Tokyo is just insane. I was just looking at the original Tokyo thread. It's like the city is many cities connected into one big one... Is the entire southern coast of Japan built together? Is there any wilderness over there anymore?!

I'd really like to visit - Japanese seem to like Finland because it's so scarcely populated.

Not exactly, Tokyo is seamlessly connected with Chiba, Saitama and Yokohama, sort of 33 million people live in that area. But around this there is space for portions of countryside and small forests. Not all the Japan is made with concrete, get a look on Google Earth. Ah, and there are also some sort of 400 or more golf clubs around Tokyo area... Very strange.

The Michelin Guide Tokyo/ The first Michelin Red Guide for an Asian city
http://www.michelin.co.jp/news/corporat/images/p1658_001.jpghttp://www.michelin.co.jp/news/corporat/images/michelin_guide_tokyo_press2.gif

(AP Mar.14)
The Michelin Guide, the French bible of gastronomy, extended its global reach Wednesday by announcing its first guide to Tokyo's restaurants amid local skepticism the French would be the best judge of Japan's culinary traditions.

The Michelin Guide Tokyo, set for release in November, is the first edition outside Europe and the United States in the renowned guidebook series that rates restaurants and hotels on excellence in cooking, service, decor and upkeep.

“Japan is a country where fine dining is an integral part of the culture,” chief executive Michel Rollier of Michelin said in a statement released Wednesday.

“Tokyo ... seemed the natural gateway to (Asia), which is so rich in gourmet food and cooking traditions,” said Jean-Luc Naret, head of the guidebooks unit.

To quell concern that Michelin's ratings would impose French tastes on centuries-old Japanese customs, Michelin dispatched both Japanese and European food critics to Tokyo's eateries, company spokeswoman Yoko Ikejima said.

“Our staff is fully trained to base their evaluations on Michelin's universal standards, as well as on a full understanding of local traditions,” Ikejima said.

A three-star rating in a Michelin guidebook means “exceptional cuisine, worth a journey.” A two-star restaurant is described as “excellent cooking, worth a detour.”

One star denotes “a very good restaurant in its category.”

Some Japanese purists were skeptical, however.

“The French do not understand anything about sushi and are so far behind in handling fresh fish. So how can they judge us?” said Yoshikazu Ono, master chef at Sukiyabashi Jiro, one of Tokyo's most famous sushi restaurants.

“If they want to appreciate Japanese cuisine, they must first study Japan's history and culture. Then they can write their guide,” he said.

The Michelin Guide's Tokyo debut comes amid moves by the Japanese government to crack down on restaurants abroad that bill themselves as authentic Japanese — but fall short of the standards at home.

A panel of food experts was appointed by the Agriculture Ministry last year to discuss a system that would certify restaurants that serve dishes in true Japanese fashion. It isn't clear when the system will kick off, however.

The Michelin guide was first published in 1900 as a guide for French motorists. It is published by the Clermont-Ferrand-based tire company of the same name.

The Tokyo guide will be released in Japanese and English.
Michelin introduced its guide to New York City restaurants in 2005.

Thousands throng Tokyo's new skyscraper by Kimiko de Freytas-Tamura

Tokyo opened Friday its tallest skyscraper, welcoming thousands of visitors from businessmen to housewives and young couples eager to explore its upmarket shops and restaurants.

Tokyo Midtown opened its wide glass doors in the morning and within hours thousands were inside, with young women in high heels quickly emerging with shopping bags as the stores did brisk business.

Temporary red-rope fences were installed to manage the flow of people, with a guide stationed every few meters (yards) to assist the overwhelmed newcomer.

Tokyo Midtown, built on the site of the former Defence Agency, is a 69,000 square-metre (741,000 square-foot) expanse that includes 132 shops, restaurants, hospital, museum and a design studio.

Its tower stands at 248 metres (813 feet), making it the tallest structure in the metropolis after the Eiffel Tower-inspired Tokyo Tower.

A Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Midtown's top floors offers the city's most expensive rooms with ones featuring a view of Mount Fuji costing 2.1 million yen (18,000 US dollars) a night.

Tokyo's latest giant urban complex enjoyed sunny spring weather on its opening day, as clusters of people admired the blooming cherry trees in its one-and-a-half hectares (four acres) of green space.

Elderly men took pictures of the scenery with their cameras, while younger couples snapped away with their cell phones and others walked dogs.

"Midtown is great because of the greenery," said Ayako Kimura, 27, an employee at one of the companies in Midtown, on a lunch break.

"It's very calm and the wide open space means that even if there are many people, there's no traffic and it's easy to navigate," she added, biting into a sandwich as she sat on a bench with two colleagues.

In one corner of Midtown is the 21-21 Design Site, an institute conceptualized by renowned architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake.

"I came here today especially because I like Ando's architecture and design," said 18-year-old Tsukuru Goto, off from school on spring vacation.

Tokyo Midtown is the latest upscale development in the central Roppongi district, long a haven for foreigners and sleazy nightlife.

Tokyo Midtown is a short walk from the similarly envisioned Roppongi Hills, which quickly became a playground for well-heeled young entrepreneurs after opening in 2003.

Some visitors credited Tokyo Midtown with mixing traditional Japanese elements and modern design. The project was overseen by US firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, best known for Chicago's Sears Tower, the tallest building in the United States.

"I like that there are Japanese aspects in the design of Midtown. Since there are a lot of foreigners in Ropppongi it's nice to have some Japanese-ness," Goto said.

The main tower features tall bamboo trees stretching towards the ceilings, while a curved wooden Asian-style bridge connects the main gallery with the outside park.

But Tokyo Midtown is also home to high-end foreign shops appearing in Japan for the first time.

Japanese shoppers crowded around Noka Chocolate -- which sells truffles to customers in Hollywood -- with prices starting at 2,100 yen (18 dollars) for one centimetre of chocolate.

But despite the initial rush to see the highly promoted complex, some customers wondered if they would come regularly.

"I'm not sure whether I will shop here. Shops seem too expensive," said Kimura, the employee at a Midtown office.

"It's nice but I think this is more of a place for young couples to go on dates, like my son. Not for housewives like me!" laughed Kiyoko Fumoto, 60.

Please give us some more mind-blowing pics of Tokyo Midtown. The whole complex itself is mind-blowing to me.

Combine this with other developments such as Roppongi Hills, Sio Site (in Shiodome), the European town (in Shinbashi/Shiodome West District) and Omotesando Hills among others and you have one mind-blowing city.

This makes the city of Tokyo even more mind-blowing.

It's so mind-blowing, I'm already going nuts
