A few questions about Yokohama:

Do most Yokohamers commute to Tokyo for work or do they work in their own city?

Does the prefecture (and the Greater Tokyo Area as a whole) suffer from NIMBYism like here in the West?

Well, perhaps the good thing about Japan is that things don't have to be centralized in the nation's capital. For instance, unlike developing countries (such as the country where I'm from) where technology, development and progress is felt only in the capital or the 'main area', Japan sees that other areas get opportunities.

Things such as employment, distribution of goods and services, healthcare, education, transportation, economic development. Perhaps, to put it in a simpler way, you don't need to transfer to Tokyo (or to the Greater Tokyo Area) in order to experience progress and economic development.

I mean just look at places like Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe for proof that people there are happy. Heck, even in Okinawa, Hokkaido, Kyushu......and even Kyoto is now even on the list.

Or something like that.......

NIMBYism you got to be in the field to be using this term. Whats your firm, are you on the developer end or the lobby end of the NIMBY problem.

as for NIMBYism i think its a more of a western phenomenon where individualism and private property are enshrined in the social psyche.

Do most Yokohamers commute to Tokyo for work or do they work in their own city?

All of the following data is from the 2005 national census, available at http://www.city.yokohama.jp/me/stat/census/kokucho0510/hokoku/pdf/chapter10.pdf"]http://www.city.yokohama.jp/me/stat/census/kokucho0510/hokoku/pdf/chapter10.pdf, p15 (only if you can read Japanese).

People living in Yokohama over the age of 15 who commute to work/school: 1,930,568

Work/commute within Yokohama: 1,201,539
Work/commute to outside of Yokohama: 729,029

Destination of commuters who live in Yokohama, but commute elsewhere:

Tokyo (23 wards): 446,000
Kawasaki City: 102,000
Central Kanagawa Prefecture: 44,000
Yokosuka / Miura: 41,000
Shonan: 36,000
Elsewhere: 59,000
Total: 729,000

Origin of commuters who commute to Yokohama, but live elsewhere:

Tokyo (23 wards): 52,000
Kawasaki City: 71,000
Central Kanagawa Prefecture: 69,000
Yokosuka / Miura: 70,000
Shonan: 61,000
Elsewhere: 70,000
Total: 393,000

Based on that, the 23 special wards of Tokyo capture 61% of people who live in Yokohama and commute outside of the city, and 23% of all commuters who live in Yokohama... Which means one in four commuters who live in Yokohama are destined for Tokyo.

Tokyo Disney Resort has many official and partner hotels in the area, such as Hilton Tokyo Bay, Sheraton Grande, Hotel Okura Tokyo Bay...
But the hotels managed directly by Tokyo Disney Resort were only 2 so far: Disney Ambassador Hotel beside the Ikspiari, and Disneysea Hotel MiraCosta in the Disneysea.

Please be serious, this thread is for great Tokyo pictures, not for riling people up over ludicrous claims.

And in case you are serious (sorry), just look a page or two back to see all of the new openings of big-name stores in the Ginza. That's a start.

To be honest, I thinks so too. But there is an important question to be asked here. If a city has got tons of extravagant big (like, 30m x 200m) flashy neons or superskyscrapers, that might look dynamic but at what cost? Is "looking dynamic" a good thing in the first place??

Recent tidbit on Mori Biru's Toranomon-Roppongi project:

http://www.asahi.com/housing/jutaku-s/JSN200807140001.html

"Establishment of Urban Redevelopment Association" approved
Toranomon-Roppongi District Type-1 Urban Redevelopment Project

Mori Building, which is participating the proposed Toranomon-Roppongi District Type-1 Urban Redevelopment Project, has indicated that the governor of Tokyo has approved the establishment of an urban redevelopment association.

The project is composed of mixed-use residential and office towers and open space totaling 2 hectares. The project site is on blocks 4 through 7 of Toranomon 5-chome (Minato Ward, Tokyo) and Roppongi 1-chome, and is located near Kamiyacho Station (Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line) and Roppongi 1-chome Station (Tokyo Metro Nanboku Line).

With the concept of a "green urban core," 3,000 sq. m. on the west end and 1,000 sq. m. on the south end will be turned into open space, taking advantage of the available land as a result of densification.

The project aims for approval of the rights transfers and start of construction in 2009, with completion in 2012.

http://roppongi.keizai.biz/img/headline/1215775023_photo.jpg
46-story (200 m) mixed-use tower + 4 underground floors (residential on floors 3-24, offices on floors 25-46)

2棟合計のコンテナ収容個数は840TEU(40フィートコンテナ420個分の格納棚を設置)となる。

I love Tokyo! Buildings are fantastic! What a great city! Shows the hard-working nature of Japanese people which we Indians admire a lot! Would like to visit this wonderful Japanese Capital at least once in my lifetime.:)

Some of the photos are described in Japanese which I don't understand.:ohno:

Tokyo sure is incredible. However I agree with you, I would prefer to live in Fukuoka (although it could be too humid this time of year.)

I'm sure most have heard about this already, but Street View has been enabled in several Japanese cities on Google Maps. Tokyo (and some surrounding cities), Osaka / Kyoto / Kobe, Sendai, Hakodate, and Sapporo are the only ones I can remember. It's pretty good! It misses out on a lot of smaller streets, but it's a lot better than I imagined it would be.

IS anyone here from shimura sakaue or heard of happy street?
It's kind of close to Ikebukuro.
It would be great if someone posts some photos of those areas since I lived there 8 years ago and would love to relive all those great memories through pictures.
If anyone does have photos of the places mentioned, then please personally message me because I post things all over the place and forget about it.

Amazing streets. It looks as if there's a different kind of view around every corner.

It doesn't matter if it's a bit messy at times with overhead wires and mixed building styles, and it doesn't have to be enormous flashy buildings, when an area is this cosy and liveable. I wish we could plan the cities in a similar way here in Sweden, instead of the usual arrays of identical buildings over a whole area.

I wasn't being stereotypical but I just don't get why have a Greco-Egyptian design for the Japanese parliament.
BTW, just out of curiosity, how many members are in the Diet?

High Intensity Proton Accelerator Facility aims to pursue frontier science in particle physics, nuclear physics, materials science, life science and nuclear technology, using a new proton accelerator complex at the highest beam power in the world. The plan has been discussed and proposed jointly by the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK (http://www.kek.jp/intra-e/index.html)) and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA (http://www.jaea.go.jp/english/index.shtml)). Previously these institutions proposed the Japan Hadron Facility (JHF) at KEK and the Neutron Science Project(NSP) at JAEA, respectively. The present new joint plan is based on these past proposals.

In addition, an upgrade towards 5-MW proton beam power at the few GeV energy region is proposed as a next step in the future. These accelerators will be constructed at the Tokai campus of JAEA, about 130km north-east of Tokyo.

At the 50-GeV Proton Synchrotron (PS), nuclear/particle physics experiments using kaon beams, antiproton beams, hyperon beams and primary proton beams are planned. Using kaon beams, production of strangeness in nuclear matter become possible, and the study of the influence of nuclear matter on this impurity probe of a strange particle will be performed. Experiments on kaon rare decays, such as K0 -> pi0 nu nu-bar to measure CP matrix elements, experiments on neutrino oscillation using the Super-Kamiokande as a detector, etc. will also be carried out.

The 3-GeV ring will be used as a booster synchrotron for the 50-GeV main ring. In addition, it is designed to provide beam power of 1 MW. Extensive physics programs which cover nuclear/particle physics, condensed matter physics, materials sciences and structural biology will be carried out there. Among them, the major highlights are materials sciences and structural biology using neutrons produced in proton+nucleus spallation reactions. Since a neutron has a magnetic moment but no electric charge, neutrons can be used for the study of magnetic properties of matter. Also, since the neutron has a mass which is similar to that of the hydrogen atom, neutrons can probe sensitively the location and dynamic behavior of hydrogen atoms in materials. The role of hydrogen atoms in biological cells is of particular interest in life science and, there, the neutron beams play a crucial role for these studies. In addition to neutrons, muon beams are also important in which muSR (muon spin rotation/relaxation), muon catalyzed fusion, and other materials sciences can be conducted. Also, particle physics experiments such as a muN -> eN conversion experiment can be performed. Radioactive beams produced from the 3-GeV PS are also useful to nuclear/astro physics research. Finally, the high current 600-MeV Linac will be used for R&D for the accelerator-driven nuclear transmutation.

The beam power is sufficiently high for all the above sciences. However, a higher beam power will enrich, in particular, neutron sciences. Thus, we plan to upgrade the accelerator to 5MW for spallation neutrons.

I think in Ginza there was only a Zara, and this last shop is made for richer people than the others and with very expensive clothes and different designs, in each street/city/country the clothes and prices changes a lot, in México it's quite cheap because of the country for example.
Those H&M buildings are impressive

Pd: Zara has just built a new building in Shinjuku, very nice

Mori Building and Toyota acquires the land of Palette Town in Odaiba
http://building-pc.cocolog-nifty.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/12/27/tokyodaiba11.jpg
Both companies are to break down facilities in the whole town.
Venus Fort (Mediterranean shopping mall) ,Megaweb (huge showroom of Toyota cars), Zepp Tokyo (live concert venue) - all are to be demolished in a couple of years. Only ferris wheel of Odaiba is to be rebuilt later in different style.
Mori and Toyota has the plans to regenerate the site as huge business cluster.

Otemachi chain redevelopment
As Otemachi is located on the north of Marunochi and Tokyo Central Station,
the area has been one of the traditional CBDs in Tokyo.
Now we can see the rush to redevelopmet there.

chain redevelopment
http://building-pc.cocolog-nifty.com/./photos/uncategorized/2008/06/16/tokyoootemachi080611.jpg
Phase 1
three office buildings are under construction.
http://building-pc.cocolog-nifty.com/./photos/uncategorized/2008/06/09/tokyoootemachi08062.jpg
Phase 2
two office towers (probably 200m + 200m) are to be built near the phase 1 site.
Phase 3
one office tower (probably 200m or more high) is to be built between the phase 1 and the phase 2
1-6 Project
one office tower (200m) is to be built on the south of the phase 2 site.
2-1 Projects
two office towers (180m-200m, 200m) are to be built to the west of the phase 2 site

and some more projects are revealed. (reconstructions of NTT Data Center, Resona Bank, The Palace Hotel, etc)

Phase 2... decision is reached. Twin office towers (floor space: 241,000 square meters), but the height is disappointing. 177m + 157m. Medical and health facilities are to be constrcuted in lower floors.

I wasn't just basing my opinion on the images posted earlier. I was in Tokyo for 2 weeks 3 years ago. Like I said in my previous post i had a gran experience there. I just didn't find the cluster of skyscrapers that makes for a great skyline.

IMO a sprinkling of great building does not a great skyline make.

Tokyo is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan and located on the eastern side of the main island Honshū. The twenty-three special wards of Tokyo, each governed as a city, cover the area that was once the city of Tokyo in the eastern part of the prefecture, and total over 8 million people. The population of the prefecture exceeds 12 million.

I always think Tokyo's sky is always smoggy even if the weather is good...and make me depressed.
I feel that especially when I go up skyscrapers like Tokyo tower..maybe that's the same as Hong Kong, where sky is always gray.
Maybe after rain it looks a bit better.:)
However, night view of Tokyo is very good, I think...

With all the nice pictures that are posted here in this thread the posts with info on new projects are getting a bit lost. There are some interesting projects planned or going on right now, it's a shame if they don't the attention they deserve right here on the Japan Forum right now.

So wouldn't it be better if there would be a Tokyo picture thread and a Tokyo projects and updates thread.

Fab pictures that make me want to go back immediately! Tokyo will always be my number one city and I hope to be able to return many times (may the Yen become cheaper!)

One thing that amazed me though, as I was walking through Shinjuku Sanchome for instance at 3 o'clock in the morning, is that a lot of the neon lights stay on during the entire night even though there are virtually no people in the street. Is that normal?

This is exactly what Tokyo needs to escape from the heat island phenomena that gets worse every summer.:applause:

The first thread reached 2,000 replies, so let's give a warm welcome to Tokyo 東京 - part two :)

What to do in Tokyo on a clear day

You can either go to your local store, buy some beer and empty the cans while browsering the forum, or you can take your camera and go out for some fine images.

Luckily I was invited to have lunch at the 36th floor of the ANA Intercontinental Hotel in Roppongi, a nice start to any day.

The mountain you see on the background is Mt. Tsukuba, 70 kms away from the hotel.

Ooh, nice pictures. :)
After having visited the major observatories around Tokyo (Tokyo Tower, Sunshine 60, Tocho, and the Mori Tower), I think Mori Tower takes the cake... The sky deck is incredible at night, as you get great views of the Tokyo Tower and Shinjuku. Even, the regular observatory is great, well worth the 1500 yen or so.

I hope they don't demolish this beautiful historical builiding.
That would be a shame.
Maybe they should just build it in a different location and keep this bulding as a museum.
