I've not been to Tokyo, but I love this building. The City Hall designed by Kenzo Tange.

It is Tokyo's tallest...

Kenzo Tange is one of my favorite architects! He's so orderly and precise...Just like me...

Can anyone guess what the conceptual inspiration was for TCH? (another building inspired its shape)

Sunshine60 is 240m high (60stories above ground ), which was the highest in Japan until 1991 but the 6th highest now.
Perhaps Sunshine60 is one of the unpopular skyscrapers in Tokyo.
That is because of the tasteless design and the location - not Tokyo Central and Tokyo Bay area, I think.
In addition, Sunshine60 has many a mystery and strange episode.

Sunshine60 was constructed in 1978. Before the construction, the site was Sugamo Prison, which accommodated 60 war criminals, including a former Prime Minister Hideki Tojo. They were executed on the top of 60 stairs. At first the building was planed for 70 stories, but it was rumored that some architect had altered the plan. It is also said the design of Sunshine60 represents the gravestone in Japanese style.
That's only one of episodes of the building.

Hong Kong comes to Tokyo !!!!

Now Tokyo is in the hotel construction boom.
Many famous hotel chains land on Tokyo one after another now . ....Four Seasons Hotel Marunouchi, Park Hotel Tokyo, Celestine Tokyo, Grand Hyatt Tokyo, Tokyo Prince Hotel Park Tower, the St. Regis Tokyo, The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo, etc.,
Above all, three hotels comes from Hong Kong in 2006, Surprisingly, the namea are Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts Tokyo, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Tokyo, and the Peninsula Tokyo !!!!

A decade ago, the top three hotels in Tokyo were the Imperial Hotel, Hotel New Otani Tokyo, the Hotel Okura.
but now, the top three is Park Hyatt Tokyo, Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo, and the Westin Hotel Tokyo.
Perhaps ten years later, the top three hotels in Tokyo will be the Peninsula Tokyo, The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo, and the St.Regis Tokyo.

In Japan, due to height restrictions, we have not had over 300m buildings until today. But here is interesting data, which has been discussed in the forum of the famous scraper site in Japan.
As compared with the scrapers in Hong Kong, the Scrapers in Tokyo may be lower but in fact much more gigantic in scale.:D

Hong Kong height (m) gross floor area(m2)
Central Plaza 374 172,798
Bank of China Tower 369 135,000
The Center 350 130,032
Cheung Kong Center 290 125,418
Manulife Plaza 240 83,860

Tokyo
Tokyo City Hall 1 243 380,502
Sunshine 60 Bldg 240 241,546
Roppongi Tower 238 380,105
Opera City Tower 234 242,261
Shinjuku Park Tower 233 263,836

If we construct the building in scale of Manulife Plaza in Tokyo instead of H.K. , the height of it would be 90 meters high in Tokyo. and now there are already more than 400 buildings over 90m in Tokyo.;)

Sonie
November 4th, 2002, 02:37 PM
According to Skyscraper.com, only three office buildings over 200m is now under construction. But additionally, five office buildings over 200m are supposed to be constructed in a few years.
In Tokyo, buildings over 200m are used as offices. Now the highest residential tower in Tokyo is 192m high.

The most incredible thing for me is Shiodome. During my visit there were only some 20 floor of the the major buildings surrounding the Yurikamome station.

And only 2 years later a cluster larger than Canary Wharf has emerged.

i am living in osaka at the moment.

what do you go up to get the classic picture of shinjuku with mt fuji behind.....that is absolutely incredible.

its amazing how japan is misunderstood and its cities are largely ignored. osaka is absolutely immense and with kobe certainaly rivals london or new york in terms of size.

tokyo is the biggest city in the world - over 33 million people. insane. i cant wait until the 2nd january when i will be going there for 4 days.....urban heaven :)

Honestly, I don't think so. I bet you should look at all gothic cathedral. I think they all have their own shapes.

And well, I'm not sure we could call this cathedral a gothic cathedral. It really got its own style and well, that's not a bad one. In fact I find it's pretty different. Maybe the guys who designed it has been inspired, but really. It's an original cathedral to me.

The bridges and the city hall are wonderfull.

How long would it take to get from Shinjuku to Yokohama's Landmark Tower by train?

In about 30 minutes you reach Yokohama station with the JR Shonan Shinjuku Line. Add 5 more to the tower by the Minato Mirai subway line.

January 5th, 2005, 04:47 AM
I recently visited Yokohama. The Landmark tower is nice, and the elevator the fastest in the world. Quite a trip.

The elevators in theTaipei 101 have now the record. But the elevators in the Landmark Tower are still very impressive.
I have a small video that i have made. The video is 35 second long and begins in the second floor and ends in the 69.
If someone have 5,5MB webspace i could upload the video.

I made a big mistake. I was only in Yokohame because of the Landmark tower. It would be better if i had spent some time in the city.

Is Tokyo-Nagoya-Kyoto-Osaka Megalopolis the largest in the world or will it face tough competition from the BosWash Area/Northeast Corridor Area/Boston-New York-Philadelphia-Washington-Baltimore Megalopolis? :)

Frungy
January 20th, 2005, 08:15 AM
Well, Bosnywash has about 44 million people, according to Wikipedia. The Tokyo metro area alone has 34 million people. and the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metro area has 17 million people. They just don't pack 'em in as dense in the US.

Harry Potter China

So the entire Tokaido Megalopolis has over 51 million inhabitants.
How about comparing the GDP of Tokyo-Ngoya-Kyoto-Osaka Megalopolis with Boston-New York-Philadelphia-Washington-Baltimore?

The area you are refering to is the Tokyo-Kawasaki-Yokohama-Chiba Area.
You are quite right, though, it has fewer people. The real number is around 28-30 million. There is another statistic which shows the population to be 44 million. This, however, is the National Capital Region of Tokyo. Officially (as in government statistics it could be considered as the extreme extent of Tokyo's metropolis). But in reality Tokyo is not a mere metropolis. It is a megalopolis (as in many metropolises connected by dense transportation network). There, in reality, Tokyo's extreme urban extent is called the Tokaido Area. This area, which extends southwestward, includes all of Tokyo's NCR (this includes already Kawasaki, Yokohama, and Chiba + Kyoto + Nagoya + Osaka + Kobe. This entire area has: 44 million + 17 million (for Osaka-Kobe) + couple millions... lets say 3 million??? for Nagoya + Kyoto population ???=the very rough estimate puts it at 68 million. :) :) :)

I was in Hong Kong, too. But, to be honest, Tokyo is 10 times greater. I don`t think that there is any city on this planet that is better than Tokyo.

I hope that the nice people in Tokyo and Japan never change. And something else, you don`t need super tall building or a great skyline, you can stay like you are forever and i would visit you again and again.

I read somewhere Mori Tower's floor area is equivalent to Chicago's Sears Tower. Massive.

new tokyo tower will be over 450m office + over 150m digital broadcasting tower(like a freedom tower ?).
And maybe ,the project contains some skyscrapers around new tower.

SO when the tower is contructed and completed will it be taller than Burj Dubai?

I wish the Mega TRY Pyramid and X-Seed 4000 get buit. Probably not in Japan as its economy has matured and their is little room to grow even more. I guess these two mega-structures would materialize in booming economies such as China, India or even possible, the US.

Never in those countries. They have huge land area, unlike Tokyo, where there is a limited amount left.

Wow these pic are just amazing. I've been a silent observer of this forum for a long time..this time just couldn't resist. The lighting for the night shots is friggin awesome...i think Tokyo is unique cuz its one of the few asian cities that seems to come to life at night. i have to make it to japan one of these days :)

i've been up both.... the taipei 101 and the landmark tower and although the latter is supposed to be slower imo the lifts in the landmark tower felt noticeably quicker. maybe they accelerate faster but have a lower top speed.
