View Full Version : DUTA-ULU KELANG EXPRESSWAY ( DUKE )
mams April 11th, 2005, 03:00 PM New RM1.16bil expressway project to start next month
KUALA LUMPUR: After being familiar with such names as NKVE, SPRINT and MRR2, motorists in the Klang Valley will have another expressway.
The planned Duta-Ulu Klang Expressway, DUKE in short, will be the “missing link” in the traffic dispersal masterplan of this metropolis of 4.5 million people, who make an estimated 2.1 million vehicle trips daily.
The concession of the 18km expressway, estimated to cost RM1.16bil, has been awarded to Konsortium Lebuhraya Utara Timur (KL) Sdn Bhd (Kesturi) and is due to begin next month.
It is scheduled to be completed in three years, project director Chua Soo Kok said here yesterday.
Chua added that the expressway would begin from the NKVE in Jalan Duta and end at the MRR2 in Jalan Ulu Kelang,
Along the way it will cross Jalan Segambut, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Sentul, Jalan Pahang, Jalan Air Jerneh (Setapak), Jalan Semarak and Jalan Setiawangsa.
Kesturi signed the 34-year concession with the Government in August last year. It is a joint venture between Wira Kristal Sdn Bhd and Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB).
The expressway, with seven elevated interchanges, will have three toll plazas but the good news for motorists is that 46% of the route will be toll-free.
Some 30% of DUKE will be elevated expressway built on 20% private land and the rest government land.
Chua said the project is like killing two birds with one stone.
“Besides filling the 'missing link' that is a vital east-west route for the northern Kuala Lumpur region to allow traffic to bypass the city centre, it will resettle some 1,000 squatter families along the way.”
He said the relocation of the squatters was due to start this month and go on until June and Kesturi would pay compensation to them for moving into three-room Kuala Kumpur City Hall flats all over the city. – Bernama

ZaHiRnYa??? April 12th, 2005, 08:39 AM Nope..it will not cross Seri Maya..;)
Part of the highway will cut cross Desa Tun Hussien Onn n Taman Setiawangsa. Both of the side already been cleared for the construction of the highway somewhere last year...
For anyone who happen to have a map of KL, like the one Sze has, then there is a rendering of the proposed DUKE highway...
So good, I think they might have another intersection nearby Jalan Jelatak...:D

ZaHiRnYa??? October 10th, 2006, 11:51 AM No idea??? Ya..Need some clearance for LRT..How?? Maybe cross traffic at jln jelatek then resume to allevated thereafter..??
dont think can cross traffic, cause the highway cut thru Taman Setiawangsa on the other side. To cross over Jalan Jelatek, the highway has to be build either overhead of lrt line or underneath.
but to build overhead, mean it will be very high, cause the lrt track already elevate high enough from the ground..
Yee Haa October 11th, 2006, 08:20 AM Super high bridge lor..BTW is the landslide is next to section 10. Was it near to the construction site?

dengilo December 5th, 2006, 03:28 AM Wow thanks so much for the photos thundercats it amazing how narrow the highway is when it passes thru taman setiawangsa!i know this is an interesting highway project but i don see how it will disperse traffic during peak hrs the mrr2 is such bad shape in the evenings! sometime to get off the elevated highway into the mrr2 in the evenings can be a nightmare on its own then we have this new highway. But i do see the benefit for people from that part of town heading to jalan duta.
Yee Haa December 5th, 2006, 07:12 AM Indeed bad traffic..maybe once completed will be less traffic in Jln Ampang & Genting Klang..as those hitting MR2 will use this road..

it may be less traffic, or it can be worse.
acela December 6th, 2006, 05:47 PM Actually any highway in KL can at least flow the traffic unfortunately a bad design highway like the MRR2 makes the traffic unflowable especially at pandan or near flamenggo where the traffic is appalling.

true. wonder why all this town planner was thinking when they designing that highway. damn terrible.
dengilo December 7th, 2006, 06:27 AM I agree with acella it the design of the highways the problem with mrr2 at the pandan indah exit is the stupidest ever i think the only reason for that is JKR is not willing to spend the extra few more juta ringgit tax dollars to buy over and demolish some of the houses along that part of the mrr2 as long as the situation as it is ,It will for ever be problem its really a choking point
forrestcat December 7th, 2006, 07:34 AM OMG...those pics...it's quite near my home.
Yee Haa December 8th, 2006, 09:42 AM Agreed with Dengilo..MRR2 especially Pandan Indah stretch to Flamingo..The stupid traffic light @ Pandan Indah to Shamelin all pouring into MRR2 & worst still left flow from MRR2 is crosssing into Jalan pandan creating crossing traffic..Now lagi terok when TESCO coming up..

DUTA INTERCHANGE: The RM1.1 billion expressway, which runs for 18km,
could save commuters precious time. (Inset) Chua oversaw the construction
of the Duke expressway
THE final piece of the Duke jigsaw is finally in place. The Duta Link on the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway is finally complete.
Effective tomorrow, road users will be able to travel from Sri Hartamas to Zoo Negara in mere minutes, as the entire stretch of the Duke expressway is fully accessible to the public.
Duke expressway first opened doors last January, but the Duta Link that stretched from Jalan Duta to Jalan Kuching remained closed as works were still in progress.
It is to be officiated today by new Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor at the toll plaza at Batu, which also is the Duke control, operations and monitoring centre.
The completion of the Duke expressway will be a welcome for commuters who encounter massive traffic jams on a daily basis while trying to get from the east to west side or vice-versa of the city.
It bypasses frequently congested areas such as Lebuhraya Mahameru, Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Ampang. Konsortium Lebuhraya Utara- Timur Sdn Bhd (Kesturi) project director Chua Soo Kok claims that it takes a mere nine minutes to get from end to end.
“Time wasted in traffic jams is precious,”said Chua. “Use Duke if you want to gain lots of precious time.”
The RM 1.1 billion expressway, which spans 18km, is made up of three essential links — the Duta Link, the Ulu Kelang link and the Karak Link.
The Duta Link runs from Jalan Duta and joins the Ulu Kelang link at the Sentul Pasar interchange. The interchange diverts traffic into two directions — eastwards on the Ulu Kelang link towards Ampang and northwards on the Karak Link, which connects to the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) at the Greenwood interchange.
While there are three toll plazas along the Duke, motorists need only pay once in each direction of the journey. The toll is set at RM2 for cars. The speed limit on Duke is 90kmh.
However, it appears that the frugality of Malaysians also extends to the use of tolled roads. After the first phase of the Duke expressway opened on Jan 9, the average daily traffic volume was 35,289 vehicles per day.
Perhaps not too surprisingly, the volume dropped to 21,807 vehicles per day when the company ended the toll-free period and began charging.
Chua predicts that the average daily traffic volume after the expressway is opened in full will be between 100,000 to 130,000.

THE much talked-about Duta-UIu Kelang Expressway (Duke) will be opened to motorists early this month.
Construction of the highway, which is scheduled to be completed by Aug, began in early 2005.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/1/5/central/m_02hillview.jpg
Impressive: The Hillview Interchange along the expressway.
Konsortium Lebuhraya Utara-Timur (KL) Sdn Bhd (Kesturi) project director Chua Soo Kok described the highway as the vital missing link.
“It provides connectivity to the east-west route of the city, completing an important link in the Kuala Lumpur Road Master Plan.
“It also links the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE)/SPRINT on the west side of city to the Karak Highway in the north and the Middle Ring Road II at Jalan Ulu Kelang on the east side.
“We are ahead of schedule because we had put in the land acquisition request early. It should be fully operational by April.
“There is, however, another 800m left on the Duta side and we will be making concerted efforts to complete the system.
“We had also opened the Karak and Ulu Kelang side earlier. The design speed of the highway is 90km/h.
Quick work: Chua explains how the expressway managed to be completed ahead of schedule.
“Nearly half of the expressway is toll free as the Batu toll is only for west-bound traffic and the Ayer Panas toll is for east-bound motorists. The Sentul toll is also only for the north-bound lanes.
“The toll price should be in line with the average pricing of the expressway.
“We are expecting a volume of 50,000 cars but the highway can take up to 130,000 cars once it is fully operational.
“Almost 40% of the highway is elevated and it will take motorists about 9 mintues to traverse the distance,” Chua explained.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/1/5/central/m_02sentul.jpg
In place: The Sentul Pasar Interchange is also ready and awaiting traffic.
Chua added that the highway was designed to disperse traffic in the city by bringing it away from the centre. He also said the company wanted to educate the public on the benefits of using the highway as, on average, motorists spent about 12sen per minute at the traffic lights.
“This figure is based on the use of fuel and wear and tear on the car,” he said.
He said the total cost of the highway RM890mil.

Ready to roll: The Greenwood Interchange 2 along the expressway.
