A photo has been posted of I think GPT in Sydney where the floorplates were just off the ground and the core approaching full height. One core level can be completed in as little as five days.

Great looking building - but I wonder how long this will hold the record. There's at least one residential building in Dubai with 80+ more floors being constructed, and a proposal for one that's 110 stories. I'd have to check the Dubai Tower thread section for more details - sorry for sounding sketchy on the details it's quite insane the amount of projects on the go in the Dubai Marina area alone :)

Hey R2 it's a very unusual shaped and designed building, especially when you take into account its soaring height. The stripes, setbacks, obscure floor plan and skewed rise all make for a very interesting design. I think you'll find that the more it's completed, the better it will appear. It's going to be a very dramatic building which ever angle it's viewed from. I predict the gold crown on top will start a new craze in building design...just be a bit more patient and watch! NFK are very creative in their designs and check out another great apartment building: Republic Tower also in Melbourne. Cheers

One thing's been bothering me for a while about this tower. What the hell is up with that spire. To me it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb.

I live in the UK, but I was in Melbourne last month and took loads of Eureka pics so I knew at least a couple of them would have Flinders Street Station in the foreground :)

I don't think that they would make it look like in the last pic. Simply because the ones who made this tower look beautiful will never ruin it just because they wanted more height. I am definate that they wouldnt make the highest residential tower in the world looking awful like in that render.

It's still available as far as I know, with an asking price of AUD $8 million. It's not a particularly special penthouse actually, just the whole of the 84th floor (total of about 550 square metres of space).

I think they just wanted to get an application in and they rushed it a bit, they didn't expect anyone to find out about it this soon and just wanted to make sure that they could get a permit quickly when they need it.

Hopefully the final version will be a significant improvement, it could also end up being signficantly higher as there is no height limit :-)

I believe apartments up to level 55 (i.e. the lower setback) are just about to be occupied in the next three months, at which point Eureka can (briefly) take the crown from Dubai... I believe there's a 340 metre high all-residential use one u/c which is due 2007 or so.

I'm amused people are writing this building off (and apologising) when:
a) it's clear few of the renders have captured the unusual geometries of the building's crown - it really has to be appreciated from many angles!
b) only the core has topped out, and we are just now beginning to see the floorplates give definition to the tapering form of the tower from level 55 upwards.
c) as has been pointed out by Grollo, even if the mast goes ahead - and it may not! - even then, the design we have seen thus far is not necessarily set in stone.

Trump Chicago is a mixed use building, not just residential.

John Hancock Center in Chicago will still have apartments higher than Eureka but that is mixed use as well.

I agree with barsby, the trams in melbourne kick ass, it makes it so easy to move aorund the city and surrounding areas quite fast. i loved em, wish we had em in brisbane.

Dubai now have some real talls UC.
they have 4 resi towers uc taller then Eureka . If Eureka gets mast approval there will be just one higher (23 marina).

I'll have to wait until it's complete, but I don't like the gold summit at all, from what I've seen in renderings. A gold-capped skyscraper will comletely clash with the rest of the building, and Melbourne's skyline in general, IMO. I'd actually like the building much more without the disharmonious pinnacle.

God knows, if a gold-capped skyscraper went up in Sydney or Brisbane, it would be endlessly disparaged as "tacky" by Melburnians...

well there are foto's and there is real life. Come and have a look at it, and if ur not amazed by the Eureka then there is either something wrong with u, or ur just saying it because of the sydney Melbourne rivalry, something which i am quite frankly sick to death of. I'm liking Eureka more and more as the floorplates catch up to the core. In some of those pics, it's looking supertall!

I have said it before and I will say it again, Eureka looks fantastic, I just hope the glass at the summit is Mandalay Bay style highly reflective metallic gold glass. We have been let down by Q1 but it seems that Eureka will live up to each and every expectation.

Yeah the spire is not an elegant solution, its slap dash.
I don't there are many people who like it who would complain if it was altered for aesthetics.

At least the Dubai tower spires / pinnacles actually look congruous to the design of the tower.

Still its a great unknown, we haven't heard anything since it was proposed so we can admire / complain about it when and if it happens.

Everyday at the trainstation it looks taller and taller.

I'm going to start working on my Visa soon and possibly go to the Australian consulate in LA to talk to them. I'm really getting sick of California, the future here for quality of life looks very grim. San Diego and LA are simply too auto dependent and expensive. Yeah the weather is nice but it is just not worth the cost of housing. Crappy one bedroom apartments in less then desirable areas rent for $800 dollars a month.

The middle class is virtually dissapearing here, it is a land of the haves and have nots and it is getting quite depressing. Melbourne looks like the best place for me since I can't stand humidity and the from the photos I've seen Melbourne looks like the most fascinating Aussie city by far and the least auto dependent. Would you say it has the best public transport of any Aussie city, is it easier to live car free there or Sydney?

Both Sydney and Melbourne have decent public transport coverage, but many Sydneysiders complain about a lack of reliability, and Melbourne suffers from a couple of coverage holes. Someone once said that Sydney has the most intensive train network in Australia, while Melbourne's is the most extensive. www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au is a good start for info.

But if you're anywhere in the inner city, the tram network will probably put Melbourne in front. I like the ticketing system over Sydney's too... time (tickets last from two hours to one year) and zone based across all modes, and students pay half price. :D

Melbourne is the least humid of the Australian cities, but it can still get very hot in summer.

... and there's still a penthouse for sale, $8 million.

I must admit that from that angle the mast doesn't look too bad, but I'm not exactly sold on it either. Gotta say it is growing on me slightly, but on the whole I wish they would just leave E as is, because from some angles the mast still looks awful IMO.

Yeah I know that, but the Yarra isn't sea level upstream - thats why it flows to the sea and its level goes up and down.

That's the Freshwater Place Resi tower.

It will be 205m when completed later this year. it's about 187m to the core in that pic so not far to topping out.

Acctually the top floor penthouse would be above the fog/clouds, whenever its in clouds the top of the core seems to just pass through them.

From that angle it doesn't look as good IMO because I like the way the building steps up, you can't see it at all from this angle, and it doesn't look as tall..Although I would say i'm half and half with the radio mast, I reckon it will look crap when viewing the building from this or the opposite side, but ok from the front/back on sides.

Yeah, I agree that both the east and west views of this tower are not as impressive as from the north and south. From my balconey in Beacon Cove, I pretty much view Eureka square from the west, and it looks a little bit featureless and rectangular. You can't see the interesting angles and setbacks, and with Freshwater Place, Crown and some of the southbank towers clustered in front of it, you can't see the whole tower. That will probably change once the crown is completed.

i dunno about that, if u view E from Swan St, Richmond, you cannot see the set backs from there, but if u see that view u couldnt tell me it doesnt look impressive.

^^^ Facade errors are fixed upon external completion of tower. So it will be fixed in a few months :)

If approved (still waiting) it will be hoisted up by a helicopter (i guess) in sections and bolted together over a few days. But this will only happen once the structure is externally complete, so around feb-march 06' when it's finished.

If I were lying on my back and I topped out like this, I'd say EUREKA!

Oh god, im feeling sick just looking at those pictures... the height is breath taking.

Although it was an extremely well done render Curtain, i just have to say that i dont like the look of the crown in that pic... :S Perhaps because it is not the whole building in the shot, and hence it doesnt blend that well. It just looks a bit too big & out of place. Im sure it will look fab tho.
