Drunkill April 13th, 2005, 08:01 AM Yes, alot of us hate it, including me. But a good thing is an openair ob deck, 50+meters above the level 88 ob deck.

A photo has been posted of I think GPT in Sydney where the floorplates were just off the ground and the core approaching full height. One core level can be completed in as little as five days.
Also in the first photo, notice how the builders forgot to leave enough room for the A in Eureka :)

markyates April 29th, 2005, 04:00 PM Great looking building - but I wonder how long this will hold the record. There's at least one residential building in Dubai with 80+ more floors being constructed, and a proposal for one that's 110 stories. I'd have to check the Dubai Tower thread section for more details - sorry for sounding sketchy on the details it's quite insane the amount of projects on the go in the Dubai Marina area alone :)
Devilution April 29th, 2005, 04:04 PM Very interesting design...and so damn tall! I envy you =)

Chibcha2k April 30th, 2005, 06:59 PM damn its so beautiful ....i want one like it in my city.
Erektion May 1st, 2005, 02:19 AM Hey R2 it's a very unusual shaped and designed building, especially when you take into account its soaring height. The stripes, setbacks, obscure floor plan and skewed rise all make for a very interesting design. I think you'll find that the more it's completed, the better it will appear. It's going to be a very dramatic building which ever angle it's viewed from. I predict the gold crown on top will start a new craze in building design...just be a bit more patient and watch! NFK are very creative in their designs and check out another great apartment building: Republic Tower also in Melbourne. Cheers
onetwothree May 2nd, 2005, 06:05 PM Woosh! I had no idea that this is going to be the tallest residential building. Cool!
Gotta love the design of this building

malec May 15th, 2005, 01:23 PM One thing's been bothering me for a while about this tower. What the hell is up with that spire. To me it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb.
The tower itsself is amazing though. One of my favourites

All residential.

I live in the UK, but I was in Melbourne last month and took loads of Eureka pics so I knew at least a couple of them would have Flinders Street Station in the foreground :)
Urban Dave May 16th, 2005, 12:25 AM You must be joking. This mast ruins the tower!!!!! One of the amazing features was the yellow, this steel gray mast is awful :puke::puke:
Dean May 16th, 2005, 07:39 AM Aweful building...sorry
I understand you're entiltled to your opinion, however i think calling it aweful and then apologising for it just reaks of jealousy. especially when you have magnificent cutting edged designed buildings from where you're from.lol

fahed May 16th, 2005, 09:34 AM I don't think that they would make it look like in the last pic. Simply because the ones who made this tower look beautiful will never ruin it just because they wanted more height. I am definate that they wouldnt make the highest residential tower in the world looking awful like in that render.
sirhc8 May 16th, 2005, 09:52 AM ^
I certainly hope you're right.
Urban Dave May 16th, 2005, 10:39 AM It's an amazing tower, it doesn't need to be the highest residential tower in the world. Becaouse someone can built higher if they want makeing a design without spires.
@Thebasetower: Take it easy man! ;)
salamagd May 16th, 2005, 10:44 AM Here's a picture from the Eureka thread taken by T_Thayer, you can see the corebox being removed:

calico May 16th, 2005, 10:43 PM This is an amazing tower, although the observation platform extension looks out of place just sitting on the top. Any idea how much the penthouse was sold/selling for?
salamagd May 16th, 2005, 10:59 PM nothing special!,sorry!
Hmm, this seems to be a common theme - people unknown to the thread jumping on and making an unjustified, two-word declamation of the inadequacy of the tower, then apologising for it! What an interesting form of critique :weird:
Any idea how much the penthouse was sold/selling for?
It's still available as far as I know, with an asking price of AUD $8 million. It's not a particularly special penthouse actually, just the whole of the 84th floor (total of about 550 square metres of space).
ChgoLvr83 May 16th, 2005, 11:25 PM Sorry. Im not in love with this at all. Actually dont even like it. I cant get past that absolutely horrible mast. At first glance, I thought it was cool until I reeaally looked at it. It doesnt do it for me but I digress.
Side note: Im sorry if I may have offended someone, not because Im jealous. I just want to make that clear.
Dean May 17th, 2005, 01:07 AM ^^ lol No problem. i certainly dont expect that it's for everyone. At least you quantified/qulaified your opinion, so people know where your coming from, instead of dismissing it with a two word answer. I find it quite funny that both of those forumers are from israel and both gave the same responce(pretty much) and then apologised for it.
Cheers

Grollo May 17th, 2005, 01:44 AM The mast has not been approved yet. The planning department has asked for more information and architect is still working on the final plans for the mast. I think they just wanted to get an application in and they rushed it a bit, they didn't expect anyone to find out about it this soon and just wanted to make sure that they could get a permit quickly when they need it.
Hopefully the final version will be a significant improvement, it could also end up being signficantly higher as there is no height limit :-)

If what you say is correct than it makes some sense. I guess I'll hold my final judgement for the completed project. Things can change. One can only hope so. :)

Xander May 18th, 2005, 03:36 PM i like it, great updates.
phi1ip May 20th, 2005, 07:08 PM 21st Century Tower; 269 m/883 ft, 54 floors
Eureka (without mast); 297 m/975 ft, 91 floors
Or...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/phi1ip/Skyscrapers/21ctwrversuseureka.jpg
Bear in mind 21st Century Tower has a whopping great spire on top, whereas Eureka has apartments right up to 280 metres. I believe apartments up to level 55 (i.e. the lower setback) are just about to be occupied in the next three months, at which point Eureka can (briefly) take the crown from Dubai... I believe there's a 340 metre high all-residential use one u/c which is due 2007 or so.
I'm amused people are writing this building off (and apologising) when:
a) it's clear few of the renders have captured the unusual geometries of the building's crown - it really has to be appreciated from many angles!
b) only the core has topped out, and we are just now beginning to see the floorplates give definition to the tapering form of the tower from level 55 upwards.
c) as has been pointed out by Grollo, even if the mast goes ahead - and it may not! - even then, the design we have seen thus far is not necessarily set in stone.
Koi May 21st, 2005, 02:03 AM Nice skyscraper....but spoiled by those awful overhead cables!!
richardsonhomebuyers May 21st, 2005, 02:35 AM To bad it will only be the tallest until Trump Chicago is done. Sorry guys.
Grollo May 21st, 2005, 02:42 AM Trump Chicago is a mixed use building, not just residential.
John Hancock Center in Chicago will still have apartments higher than Eureka but that is mixed use as well.
Barsby May 21st, 2005, 02:46 AM haha no need to be sorry, thats life, i think the big thing here is it will be the tallest in the southern hemisphere for some time. Spoiled by those awful overhead cables? its called an efficient public transport system, something that most cities around the world struggle with.
Aaron17 May 21st, 2005, 04:59 AM I agree with barsby, the trams in melbourne kick ass, it makes it so easy to move aorund the city and surrounding areas quite fast. i loved em, wish we had em in brisbane.

No need to be sorry, there are already a few proposals in Dubai that are taller also, and they are 100% residential too. ;)
isoboy May 23rd, 2005, 05:12 AM I like it, but I tend to agree with those who say it's nothing special. It's certainly tall, and an impressive addition to Melbourne's skyline, but I don't see anything amazing or revolutionary about it. Some Melburnian forumers seem to feel it's compulsory to be "blown away" by Eureka.
isoboy May 23rd, 2005, 05:17 AM P.S. I hope they don't add a spire. It really doesn't need one. I think a cheap attempt to add height would compromise the building's solid, confident design a little.
Barsby May 23rd, 2005, 05:20 AM ever been up close to it since it has topped out isoboy?

Dubai now have some real talls UC.
they have 4 resi towers uc taller then Eureka . If Eureka gets mast approval there will be just one higher (23 marina).
all these are pure residential
23 Marina - 380 m /90 /2008
Princess Tower - 340 m/ 90 /2009
Najd Tower -340m / 82 /2008
Ocean Heights -310 m /82/ 2007

I'll have to wait until it's complete, but I don't like the gold summit at all, from what I've seen in renderings. A gold-capped skyscraper will comletely clash with the rest of the building, and Melbourne's skyline in general, IMO. I'd actually like the building much more without the disharmonious pinnacle.
God knows, if a gold-capped skyscraper went up in Sydney or Brisbane, it would be endlessly disparaged as "tacky" by Melburnians...
CULWULLA May 23rd, 2005, 07:43 AM ^ hey sydney already has a 300m gold capped structure!! lol

well there are foto's and there is real life. Come and have a look at it, and if ur not amazed by the Eureka then there is either something wrong with u, or ur just saying it because of the sydney Melbourne rivalry, something which i am quite frankly sick to death of. We are all Australians and can be proud of Eureka!
isoboy May 23rd, 2005, 10:12 AM if ur not amazed by the Eureka then there is either something wrong with u, or ur just saying it because of the sydney Melbourne rivalry
There is no right or wrong when it comes to aesthetic opinions. I would never say "there is something wrong with you" just because you didn't agree with my assessment of a building. How old are you? 12? And BTW, I do not buy into Sydney-Melbourne rivalry - I'm not from either city. I live in Sydney at the moment, but actually prefer Melbourne in many ways.
Wezza May 23rd, 2005, 10:15 AM I'm liking Eureka more and more as the floorplates catch up to the core. In some of those pics, it's looking supertall!

I have said it before and I will say it again, Eureka looks fantastic, I just hope the glass at the summit is Mandalay Bay style highly reflective metallic gold glass. We have been let down by Q1 but it seems that Eureka will live up to each and every expectation.

Then why are you even on skyscrapercity? These forums are all about posting pics of skyscrapers (or renderings or models) around the world and discussing them. Or do you fly to each and every individual site before making comment? Somehow, I doubt it.
Like most people here, I have seen numerous Eureka renderings. I have seen the latest pics. I have also been to the site several times over the construction phase, as recently as a few months ago. I am familiar with how the project has progressed, how it looks now, and how it is meant to look upon completion. If I want to comment, I will. By your logic, this thread is restricted to Melburnians or forumers currently visiting the city. Ridiculous.

Curtain May 25th, 2005, 10:10 AM Yeah the spire is not an elegant solution, its slap dash.
I don't there are many people who like it who would complain if it was altered for aesthetics.
At least the Dubai tower spires / pinnacles actually look congruous to the design of the tower.
Still its a great unknown, we haven't heard anything since it was proposed so we can admire / complain about it when and if it happens.
Curtain May 25th, 2005, 10:13 AM Oh sorry, its the Gold Crown we hate - havent heard of that one :)
mello May 28th, 2005, 01:27 AM I can't wait to be there in person to see that. Melbourne's skyline is really shaping up to be a classic.
Drunkill May 28th, 2005, 06:11 AM you comming over some time Mello? or just wanting to?
Everyday at the trainstation it looks taller and taller.
mello May 29th, 2005, 06:40 PM I'm going to start working on my Visa soon and possibly go to the Australian consulate in LA to talk to them. I'm really getting sick of California, the future here for quality of life looks very grim. San Diego and LA are simply too auto dependent and expensive. Yeah the weather is nice but it is just not worth the cost of housing. Crappy one bedroom apartments in less then desirable areas rent for $800 dollars a month.
The middle class is virtually dissapearing here, it is a land of the haves and have nots and it is getting quite depressing. Melbourne looks like the best place for me since I can't stand humidity and the from the photos I've seen Melbourne looks like the most fascinating Aussie city by far and the least auto dependent. Would you say it has the best public transport of any Aussie city, is it easier to live car free there or Sydney?

:omg::omg::omg:!!!! Those penthouse will have stunning views!
invincible May 31st, 2005, 11:12 AM Would you say it has the best public transport of any Aussie city, is it easier to live car free there or Sydney?
Both Sydney and Melbourne have decent public transport coverage, but many Sydneysiders complain about a lack of reliability, and Melbourne suffers from a couple of coverage holes. Someone once said that Sydney has the most intensive train network in Australia, while Melbourne's is the most extensive. www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au is a good start for info.
But if you're anywhere in the inner city, the tram network will probably put Melbourne in front. I like the ticketing system over Sydney's too... time (tickets last from two hours to one year) and zone based across all modes, and students pay half price. :D
Melbourne is the least humid of the Australian cities, but it can still get very hot in summer.
... and there's still a penthouse for sale, $8 million.

actually 354m above the Yarra! Its 351m above ground level.
skiesthelimit June 7th, 2005, 08:55 AM I must admit that from that angle the mast doesn't look too bad, but I'm not exactly sold on it either. Gotta say it is growing on me slightly, but on the whole I wish they would just leave E as is, because from some angles the mast still looks awful IMO.
Curtain June 7th, 2005, 11:05 AM actually 354m above the Yarra! Its 351m above ground level.
Yeah I know that, but the Yarra isn't sea level upstream - thats why it flows to the sea and its level goes up and down.
351m is good enough, 353.75m above sea level.

From that angle it doesn't look as good IMO because I like the way the building steps up, you can't see it at all from this angle, and it doesn't look as tall..Although I would say i'm half and half with the radio mast, I reckon it will look crap when viewing the building from this or the opposite side, but ok from the front/back on sides.

Yeah, I agree that both the east and west views of this tower are not as impressive as from the north and south. From my balconey in Beacon Cove, I pretty much view Eureka square from the west, and it looks a little bit featureless and rectangular. You can't see the interesting angles and setbacks, and with Freshwater Place, Crown and some of the southbank towers clustered in front of it, you can't see the whole tower. That will probably change once the crown is completed.

i dunno about that, if u view E from Swan St, Richmond, you cannot see the set backs from there, but if u see that view u couldnt tell me it doesnt look impressive.

deep sea buildings July 29th, 2005, 09:07 PM does anyone have a rough timeline as to when the mast starts to go on top?
Drunkill July 30th, 2005, 08:03 AM does anyone have a rough timeline as to when the mast starts to go on top?
If approved (still waiting) it will be hoisted up by a helicopter (i guess) in sections and bolted together over a few days. But this will only happen once the structure is externally complete, so around feb-march 06' when it's finished.
GGG August 2nd, 2005, 11:44 PM If I were lying on my back and I topped out like this, I'd say EUREKA!

demanjo August 4th, 2005, 06:44 AM Oh god, im feeling sick just looking at those pictures... the height is breath taking.
Although it was an extremely well done render Curtain, i just have to say that i dont like the look of the crown in that pic... :S Perhaps because it is not the whole building in the shot, and hence it doesnt blend that well. It just looks a bit too big & out of place. Im sure it will look fab tho.
Curtain August 4th, 2005, 08:36 AM ^Yeah you're absolutely right.. retouched it and made it smaller
sorry got carried away :) ctrl & F5 to reload new one. cheers
