View Full Version : Vaasa - The Sunniest Town of Finland
Qualtagh April 12th, 2005, 11:05 PM These photos are taken by me last weekend (9.4.2005) when I walked around the city of Vaasa (or Vasa in Swedish) looking for a pair of new shoes. The city is the sunniest in Finland indeed, and like most of the old "garden" towns, looks best in the summer, but this day happened to be a gray Saturday in April.
Finns do not have to comment since I've shown these pics with some extra ones in Talo Forum already. ;)
I have to admit that I only took 1 to 2 photos of each target, alas some of them never made it to my server.

Coming up in June: More sunny photos of the dowtown and the ruins/remained buildings of old Wasa.
Ringil April 12th, 2005, 11:31 PM thanks! its nice to see some other finnish towns for once. Vasa seems to be a nice town, i come to think a little bit of Uppsala when i saw some the pictures.
http://www.netikka.net/jukkasah/mjs/wasa/lyseo.jpg
ah,you can see the Vasa weapon shield on the top of that house.
lofgren April 12th, 2005, 11:42 PM Nice, but it doesn't look too sunny there though.
Qualtagh April 12th, 2005, 11:51 PM Nice, but it doesn't look too sunny there though.
Yeh, quite a sarcastic title, but that's actually one of the slogans of the city.
Romas April 13th, 2005, 04:50 AM Thanks for pictures.
Nice buildings of the beginning of 20th century.
Are the other pictures from 20-30ies?
DnH April 13th, 2005, 12:01 PM nice pics
my grandmother came from Vaasa
Qualtagh April 13th, 2005, 12:32 PM Thanks for pictures.

Eldest are from late 1800's, because the old town was burned down in ~1850, and the new city of Nikolaistad was founded closer by the sea.
Sideshow_Bob April 13th, 2005, 02:23 PM A lot of flags, i can count thirteen finnish flags on your pictures.
Thanks for the pics and nice looking town!
designwise April 13th, 2005, 05:11 PM Vasa is one of Finland's most Swedish towns. The city looks like a mix of Stockholm and Uppsala and it has the atmosphere of a Swedish city like some other cities in Finland like Mariehamn. It's named after king Gustav Vasa.
I really love some of the buildings in Vasa.
sander April 13th, 2005, 06:39 PM Thanks for the tour. Even with grey weather this city looks nice. I like street shots, there aren`t very many cars and everywhere seems to be "tranquil feeling".
late- April 13th, 2005, 08:23 PM Vaasa is also a strong contender for having the ugliest city buses of all Finnish towns :) The only real competitor is Hämeenlinna.
Maris VX April 14th, 2005, 10:30 AM Nice town. Reminds me of Pori (Bjorneborg in Swedish).
Moolio April 14th, 2005, 11:08 AM Vaasa is a strange town. in this http://www.netikka.net/jukkasah/mjs/wasa/nakyma.jpg pic it looks like nice and relatively dense, but then there are these areas which aren't urban at all. I can't make up my mind if I like it or not.

Have ye been there? Yeah, the truth is that mostly only the newer parts of the downtown are truly urban, but I like that small-town feeling, especially in the summer. And the fact is that there aren't more than 75 000 inhabitants in Vaasa. I try to snap some suburban commieblock photos next time...
Moolio April 14th, 2005, 03:50 PM 75'000? Sounds too much. I've heard it's closer 55'000 or so. I dunno. In Finland it's really difficult to tell a city's or town's pop since we're probably the only country in Europe where the word "town" refers to the whole municipality populationwise. Oh, and no, I've never been there, but I'd surely like to go there someday.
designwise April 14th, 2005, 04:16 PM I agree with Maris that it does resemble Pori (Björneborg) slightly. My family originates from near there.. a town called Norrmark which is very very beautiful. The town is visited by architects from around the world as it features masterpieces by Aalto and one of the world's greatest private houses from the last century + many old Nordic wooden houses and mansions, parks.

Dang. :D That's right, it's 57 000. I find it kinda funny that a town that has over 50 000 inhabitants is officially already a "big city" in Finland. Doesn't really matter because only the word "city" is used in everyday language. I tend to call some very small towns "kauppala" (borough or the former name for a small town) though. :D
Jarmo K April 14th, 2005, 07:19 PM very very beautiful town!
i epecially like the water tower and hartmann's building (toni has already shown this pic to me:D) (:
thanks dude!
Nightsky April 15th, 2005, 04:25 PM If this is the sunniest town in Finland - how is the least sunny town when?! (just kidding).
Nice photos, beautiful buildings. I think it looks much like Sweden. It is very nice to see other cities then the most famous ones.
Nightsky April 15th, 2005, 04:43 PM Btw, the population is 57 000 according to World Gazetteer.
MCarr April 15th, 2005, 04:58 PM for where I come from and as for my standarts I couldnt help to smile when i saw these pictures of the SUNNIEST town in Finland... :)
Moolio April 15th, 2005, 05:10 PM If I remember correctly Vaasa once advertised itself as the sunniest town in Finland. These kinds of slogans were back then very common among the smaller places in the country. Most of them had little or nothing to do with reality. I remember some obscure little village I had never in heard of calling itself the "Monaco of Finland", or smt. :D:D:D:D:D Lahti (a town of 90'000 people then) had a the most outrageous slogan of all "Lahti - business city". I still can't stop laughing thinking of all those slogans. :)
dababest May 8th, 2005, 09:24 PM So nice Finnish city! :eek2: :okay:
wolkenkrabber May 9th, 2005, 04:09 PM cool. Vaasa is much more of a city them i had expected it to be, how far is it from Vaasa o Jacobstad?
Qualtagh May 9th, 2005, 07:09 PM how far is it from Vaasa o Jacobstad?

AtlanticaC5 May 9th, 2005, 07:28 PM Nice pics with nice buildings. The old watertower looks mighty, how tall is it?
intervention May 9th, 2005, 10:14 PM No disrespect here, but my first impression of the town was "...how Russian!"
Magnus Brage June 10th, 2006, 12:58 AM varför ser det så jävla dystert ut i Finland? man blir ju deppig bara av att se på bilderna.
Svempa99 June 10th, 2006, 05:15 AM Any city looks dull on a gray day. But it's never the less obvious that the architecture in these pics is nice I think.

Du grabben, har du varit i Vasa ? Hur kan du veta det ??? Stämingen här i Helsingfors iaf är alltid på toppen !! Nordens party city numero uno! ;)

Yes you're right. In Vaasa you don't have to speak finnish. You could survive with swedish.
100 kilometers.

Nice pic! How I hope that we don't have our east neighbour or just sea between them!
sapmi October 31st, 2007, 11:14 PM Beautiful buildings!
Qualtagh November 3rd, 2007, 01:01 AM Funny to log on the forum for the first time in a year, and find my old thread on the first page of S&B. Celebrating that, here's some more pics I took back in 2006 with my good ol' Canon A400. This time the sun actually shined. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that the King of Sweden was in town.
(Boring fact: the first pics were taken in July and the latter in September, but you can't tell the difference, can you.)
