Its about time I broke me duck, and started a thread.

I would say it is a skyscraper, for manchester anyway.

its small windows make it look bigger than it is, if it had balconies may it wouldnt get my approval.

I'd call it a 'tower'.

I think 'Skyscraper' is pushing it a bit.

I'd say it is a tower.

A skyscraper is generally considered to be a building over 150m.

Have you ever been to London and actually seen Tower 42 or SwissRe up close? Now they are real skyscrapers. Check this out: http://www.willfox.com/t42.html

Arndale is a big building but it doesn't exactly "soar" like a true skyscraper does.

Don't worry, you'll soon have the Beetham Tower. :)

The Arndale is a pathetic excuse for a building why they don't knock it down is beyond me!

I like the arndale tower it adds a bit of midrise bulk to the skyline ..it just needs recladding not demolishing and it looks good at night lit up

Nobby
April 13th, 2005, 06:57 PM
they are pretty damn similar in size aren't they.

Looking at Beetham (the side with the blade on) will look huge.

Didn't realise it would be as tall as Tower 42 - which looks huge even amongst the taller surroundings in London.

April 13th, 2005, 06:57 PM
agree with you oscar; although i wouldnt call it a skyscraper. it is definitely high-rise though. i think it should be re-cald, like city tower is at the mo.

I have been to NYC and seen the Empire State building and the Twin Towers....now they are REAL skyscrapers.........hehehe.

I have to say, I wouldnt say a council tower block was a skyscraper, but the Arndale is over 20 stories high .........does anyone have a good pic showing it in good light.

If it was actually possible to stand at its base (instead of in the feckin middle of a shopping mall) I think it would look alot more slender.

andysimo123

No I dont think it is as I said on the other thread its really only a high rise.

caw123
April 13th, 2005, 09:19 PM
Can't say I'm arsed.

Highrise, skyscraper, tower. Whatever you label it it's still there, still rank, and I still love it.

I've always thought a skyscraper is over 500ft. Don't think it adds bulk to the skyline though. There's no bulk yet.

April 17th, 2005, 04:04 PM
It has a dominating presence over its immediate surroundings, I like it.. at one time it would of been feasible to say it was a skyscraper to Manc.. as it was the 3rd tallest block.. now however, like its 2 senior cousins it shall be a mid-rise, as the age of true skyscrapers begins for Manc. I would still call it a tower. Besides, you keep calling it rank but it aint that bad from a distance, lol.. they're are far worse towers about.

The small windows are the reason why it looks taller than it is,I like the way it towers over exchange sq...is it due for a reclad? the mustard colour is one reason why people hate it I think ...it reminds them of the old arndale itself.....which was digusting

Accura4Matalan
April 17th, 2005, 05:39 PM
Although ugly, it is very successful in terms of making money. Because of that, there are no plans to reclad it.

18 stories of office space and 2 for the Upper and Lower mall floors respectively.

Be curious to know what financial details you are basing that on Accura?

Even it is making money, doesnt exclude the possibility of it being smartened up to make even more money does it?

Well the Arndale tower is to the Arndale as the Rotunda must be to the Bullring.. and they're wanting to give that a spruce up so.... I wouldn't rule out Arndale, but its unlikely..However, it would be the only tall of Manc not to get some attention, CIS & City Tower are gettin attention.. NT and Portland recently have had work done (even if by Bruntwooders) so who knows.. Certainly would compliment the new Next if the arndale was changed.. Although I think I'd want it staying some kind of yellow colour. A lot less mustard-like and grimey, but maybe similair to the tiles they've used on the Next extension.. could look nice.

The Arndale Tower is a hideous outmoded carbuncle that REALLY SHOULD have been blown up long ago - if Brum can start dismantling its most outdated 60s towers (two of which don't even hold a candle to Arndale Tower in terms of sheer ugliness), why the hell can't Manc? At least then with all the other huge towers that will be springing up in the city in the next 5-10 years, its demise won't be such a huge loss....if at all... I SAY FLATTEN THE PUKE-COLOURED FUCKER NOW - IT'S UGLY AS SIN!!!!

Agree its bloody ugly in its present state but a reclad in limestone or granite effect cladding would be better than demolition but unlikely anytime soon ..lets just demolish the tower on manchester cathedral it looks like a small town parish church to me

If you walk from the bottom floor of Muji up the stairs towards the exit on Exchange Sq, the tower looks 'kin massive.
One of the very few remainders/reminders of 70's Manchester left. The fact that it is a 90m high museum piece and pretty ugly to boot serves it no favours.
Reclad it in tea leaves.

Better still slip a huge 300ft brown paper bag [with obligatory two circles cut out for eyes] upside down over the fucker - surely something else Manchester can proudly shout from the rooftops about - you know - the world's largest brown paper bag covering one of its buildings!!!

I will have to post up a Photoshop jobbie on this one, it's too good to let go now.....

I can't believe that people want to knock her down. Ok, she isn't everyone's cup of tea, but Manchester has little enough office space as it is, and needs one hell of a lot more, so stop being so idealistic and boneheadedly romantic and deal with her for what she is, because she will not be going anywhere fast.

Think about it, how many 90m office towers are currently approved for construction? Last thing Manchester needs is losing that amount of space and office workers just because someone has some gripe about her asthetic appeal.

it's only a bit of fun,,we know it's never going to be demolished,,but i would definatly like to it reclad , or painted ,that colour is awful and just reminds us of the miles of piss stained tiles we used to have

I very much doubt he will go to such extremes, besides, what are you implying? That some forumers here rid themselves of their sense of humour?
Yeah - I think that will do wonders for the spirit of this community then - make it into something just like the US forums or summat. Where you get brigged just for having a different opinion that doesn't tie with common "consensus". Yeah. Right. And I wonder which misguided soul was the NINTH person to bestow said Arndale Tower the already dubious distinction of "skyscraper"? I always believed that the minimum height of a true skyscraper started at 400 feet anyway. Anything below would just be a "tower block" really.

When you get the urge to log on, perhaps you could adopt another remedy.
There is a new contraption from Sony which has a working title of "Rikko".
You spout some farfetched poetry into the 5mm uber-disc slot and it re plays this as chamber music up your spine.
The sensations are accordingly tremendous.
Akin to those facial massagers you get in Daily Mail techno pamphlets but with your nerves fizzing rampant like.
