if i may comment as a photographer - the pics are good but what would've made them better is a slower shutter speed. They're fairly dark, and a slower shutter would've allowed more light to enter. Im curious what type of camera these pics were taken with. Im not trying to criticise or anything, just trying to help out whoever shot these photos.
just my 2 cents

mostar is stunning!!
is the part where the bridge is the old quarter of the city? how is the rest?

There are a lot of parts surrounding the old quarter with Austrio-Hungarian architecture and various old mosques sprinkled around. There are some very notable buildings in this part... I'm specifically thinking of the the pseudo-Moorish high school which strongly resembles the Sarajevo Vijecnica, and the Orthodox church on the outlying hilltops. If these two structures were rebuilt you'd have another 6 photographs of them, just like yuo have several of the Stari Most. Surrounding these areas are the typical red-roofed houses you see in pictures of Sarajevo... some of them old and with the Ottoman city planning style and some of them more modern communities.

The town is basically divided by the main boulevard. I just described you the old historical part of town east of the boulevard. The boulevard itself could be very beautiful if it was reconstructed. It has some old architecture on the side so parts of it could sort of look like a motorized Ferhadija. As it stands however, its in complete ruins. Some parts of it you would think the war ended yesterday.

The part of town west of the boulevard is more modern. Not to say that the eastern part isn't modern.. it's more that the western part doesn't have much historic architecture. And because there's more space on this western side, some of the more modern buildings, like the main soccer stadium and most of the big malls are there. It's also full of commieblocks which are... well, you know... but the greenery makes them a lot easier to stand. There are a lot of nice new buildings around the place which make the city complete. No real high-rises though.

12,654 yugoslavs? no such thing

yes there was, and still is today.... here are some reasons of why people choose to be called Yugoslavs:

hardcore Yugoslav — (Love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it) patriotism, despite the fact that Yugoslavia at that time readily acknowledged that its population included several (The people who live in a nation or country) nations, not just a single Yugoslav one;

mixed marriages — children of parents of two different ethnicities, raised wholly in the Yugoslav spirit;

relatively minor nationalities —people among the Muslims by nationality or the Bunjevci did not have strong national affiliations.

mapko
October 10th, 2005, 06:30 AM
that sums it up pretty well yugoboy... in 1981 there were over 1.2 million Yugoslavs... the number went down by 1991, and its almost become an anomaly today... a lot of people declared yugoslav in bosnia (5.4% of the population) including my parents... that number surely dropped because of the war, but there is no census info to prove it... in serbia/montenegro alone, the number of yugoslavs dropped from 350,000 to 85,000 (1991 to 2002 census)
