The city of

The city of Gradacac played a very important role in the history of Bosnia-Herzegovina, especially in modern times.

Husein Kapetan Gradaščević, the "Zmaj od Bosne (Dragon of Bosnia)", was a member of the city's ruling family. He led the 1830 rebellion - which was predominantly a Bosnian Muslim war for independence from the Ottoman Empire.

In the same way that most Bosnian cities have a Marshall Tito Street, they also have a Zmaja od Bosne.

Beautiful city, I just love how it looks untouched. :) All cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have great potential, even the small towns! I am really suprised how modern some small towns are in the countryside.

i forgot to mention, is it just me or do others as well notice that these small bosnia and herzegovina cities are extremely well planned out? i mean, in those photos it looks like everything was planned to be there, and has a good purpose and location! it's unbelievable...

Nice. The home of our greatest hero. And surprisingly charming as well. How many people does it have?

p.s. do you know if Gradascevic's tower is open to the public? It looks nicely kept up.

I personally think that the city has great charm. The same reason that people think that Teslic has great charm, I also think the same for Gradacac. The quite streets, the extremely nice architeture...Everything seems extremely nice. :)

This picture I think is great. :)

The first 2 photos on the second row are so fantastic
That is how houses used to be build in Albania in the 19th century or even before that
In fact , in Ohrid , Macedonia i made a comment in one thread about how identical the houses look.
We have a city in East-Central Albania by the name of Berat and it is called The City of 1000 Windows
The houses there look exactly like in those 2 photos , with 4-5 windows in one wall alone:D

The city of
TRAVNIK

Mods: I realize there was already a Travnik thread but it was labelled "Muslim/Croat Federation" instead of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Here are some photos of the city and it's alpine resort (Vlasic) from February/March, 2005...

The 'Petar Barbaric' Catholic Center in Travnik.

Travnik has been declared an "Open City" - which is a special designation given to Bosnian cities (by the UN) where all ethnic and religious groups live in harmony.

Nice pictures. That carsija would look really awesome if it was completely rennovated.. a lot of fine historical buildings look too run down.

By the way, I know that the municipalities are right next to each other but how far apart are the cities Novi Travnik and Travnik?

Imagine if all the places like this:

http://fluid.members.epn.ba/Gradovi%20BiH/Travnik/photos/photo6.jpg

Were as rennovated well as this:

A lot of it has been, Ledeni. You probably remember Travnik after the war - even before it, actually.

Surely you agree that downtown Sarajevo looks "better" by these standards in 2005 than it did in 1985? The colors are all fresh and bright - everything looks new and clean. Travnik is going through a similar renovation.

You must remember that Travnik never lost a single building during the war, not even one. A few had to be repaired and that was the extent of it. So, Bosnia-Herzegovina doesn't really have enough money for aesthetic renovations just yet - hence all the bulletholes in Sarajevo.

Travnik has still managed to fix up quite a lot, though. The Plava Voda district is an exceptional example. The main street through town is another. It almost has the atmosphere of post-war Berlin where the main streets were rebuilt, but go a block in any direction and you were standing in war ruins. Travnik is like that. The main streets, sites, are all flawlessly restored - the rest of the city is as rundown and "grey" as the whole of Yugoslavia was in the 1970s.

^ It's a good idea. You'll notice in these pictures - I was too lazy to sort out the scans and uploads and everything else - I have the insides of the Church and the Cathedral far from the outsides...there's no sense or reason to the order in the photos above, but that's fine. :D For now. ;) But yes, in the future lets sort it out. :) I also have to upload a modern Sarajevo section, I skipped over it fairly completely in the above post because I just wanted to get, in full size, everything I've already posted in other threads.

To Mila and Mimica:

Dont take this as critisicm because it is not but i believe that Sarajevo needs to get rid of these houses in the hill , just eliminate them and build highrises as a replacement.
Or , just make it green
These tiny houses ruin the great buildings of Sarajevo , they ruin the structure of the city
A european modern city such as sarajevo cannot have these tiny houses in the downtown area being so visible.
They belong in the outskirts of the city

I disagree with you. In my opinion Sarajevo shouldn't build so much modern high-rises, simply because that is not Sarajevo... when a person thinks about Sarajevo they think of Bascarsija, or the miljacka, or the Olympic mountains... no one really thinks of the new bosmal buildings... I mean they are very nice but every city in Europe has high-rises...not every city has such a blend of east meets west, modern/historic.. you know what I mean? Plus I always wanted to live in a house on the hills of Sarajevo... I think that would be amazing waking up with a view like that :D ahha so don't ruin my dream! lol

I agree with both of you. Homes aren't often visible from the new city areas - but that's the beauty of Sarajevo, our hills. Even in the old city, you can constantly see the homes, mosques, churches, etc...on the hillsides around you. Also - it's not as though they're shanty towns. They are normal, Bosnian-style neighborhoods:

You were the same person that said that Sarajevo wasn't very modern! ;) :D You need to realize, for a city of this size, Sarajevo is very modern. Those homes that you speak of on the hills, my friend...Those have been there longer than Bosnia and Herzegovina has been a country! :D

If I'm not mistaken, most of the newest projects, if not all, are located down in the actuall city part. Those homes on the hills and great beauty to the mountains, and provide excellent views for the owners.

Your wish of talking down the homes and placing highrises there, would almost be impossible, since it's very difficult to build a high structure on the steep hill.

Sarajevo is modern , there is no question of this and it was the most modern city in the Balkans in the 80's in my opinion
The war really damaged it but the recent thread of photos that Mila opened really convinced me
I simple believe that those houses in the hills dont belong there
They might be attractive to some but let's be honest , Sarajevo is not a small town so you really cant have houses in a capital city so close to downtown

Sarajka
April 17th, 2005, 09:54 AM
They're not really that close, though. :) I mean, I wouldn't want to have to walk from one of those homes to the stadium. ;)

It's an illusion created by the size of the landscape around Sarajevo. If you were to lay Sarajevo flat, you would see how far apart everything really is.

Take the "L" for example, the two ends seem so close? But stretch it out: "__" - and they're far apart. ;)

I was wondering, do you know if there have been any Bosnians going back to live in Bosnia/Sarajevo? Those who left Bosnia after Yugoslavia fell apart?

From the articles that I have read, yes. There seem to be quite a few people going back to Bosnia and Herzegovina every year, and I believe an article in the thread, "News in Bosnia and Herzegovina" has something to talk about the people comming back. You should take a look.

Some of the things, as L3D3NI put it, are the people aren't sure if they can come back into the life in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It's not really that lack of anything, it's just that some people fear they won't be accepted by jobs, since they don't speak PERFECT Bosnian, and stuff like that.

I believe there is some sort of English College in Sarajevo at the moment, or it is being built, I'm not sure, but that will certainly help convince more of the people that left to come back. :)

^^ You can do more from the outside than from the inside out.

I don't get it when people say, everyone should return. What's the point? It would just put more pressure on the economy, since there are already not enough jobs out there.

If you're gonna start a business there, okay.... that I get. You would hire people, contribute to taxes and so on. But to return there and end up jobless or even steal jobs from people who need it more, is not helping.

My cousin in Sweden has it figured out. He works for some sports gambling company that works a lot over the internet.. he makes the odds or something like that. He does the bulk of his work over the computer so it allows him to spend half his year in Bosnia.

You are right, the unemployment rate is still very high, but from all the articles that I've read, it seems to be falling. Once the newest generations of Bosniaks start working, unlike many of their parents (:|), then the unemployment rate will fall dramatically...

This isn't related to what he said, but he reminded me of something!

My cousin Danijela, last summer she came back to BiH with a group of her friends from Norway; they'd always made fun of her for coming back to BiH on all her breaks until they watched a home video we made. It wasn't even about the city at all - it just had a few scenes taken from on my balcony and that was enough. ;) They had to come.

Anyhow, at the end of their visit they all left with good memories. One of the girls hated it here because the "air was still and warm". :D But the rest liked it.

^ in a nutshell, a new generation starting to work has little to do with the current unemployment rate. Foreign investments to BiH are low, and the long-term forecast isn't predicting sunshine. Domestic investment is obviously low. It has been going up, but that's because it can't get much more down. Foreign aid is spotty. As a whole, there are no jobs, and satisfactory economic conditions needed to create them won't occur for a while yet.

In fact, that's why it indeed makes no sense for everyone who left to come back. First and foremost, it makes no sense as an individual choice. It doesn't make sense for an educated person (who probably has deep loans for that education) to take a catastrophic pay cut, if they can even find a job. Secondly, they are stealing a job from someone who needs it more. That doesn't make sense. So you lose $$$, and you're making it harder for those that can't go out of BiH to get a job in BiH.

Indeed, the only time when it makes sense for people to come back (if they wish, that is), is if they were lucky enough to have accumulated a large amount of capital and are willing to spend it in BiH in some capacity. These people are rare.

Those problems that you are talking about aren't exactly only for Bosnia and Herzegovina, if you haven't realized. The surrounding area, such as Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia, Croatia are also having the same problems when it comes to the issues that you've stated. :|

As for your information about "the future not looking any brighter", you'll probably have to look at the information on Bosnia and Herzegovina, before making your assumptions. :ohno: The economy is growing, and that means that more jobs will be made. Right? If more jobs are made, that means more people will HAVE the jobs. Right? If more people HAVE the jobs, that means that the current unemployement rate will fall. Right?

^ Oh it is picking up but you must remember that this would've been quite a terrible adjustment even if our separation from Yugoslavia had been peaceful.

Under communism, the Bosnian economy was artificial. Everyone worked, whether they needed to or not. There were often a dozen hands where two would suffice. This was not unique to Yugoslavia - it was the same situation in much of the USSR and elsewhere. When you switch to a free market economy, it runs on supply on demand. If it is needed, you do/make it - you have a job. If it is not needed, you don't, you find a new need to fill. Bosnia, as a country, hasn't gotten the hang of this yet.

To steal a football metaphor - you can't chase after the ball, you have to know where the ball is going to be. Economically, Bosnia is trying to copy what other states in similar situations have been doing - but we've missed those supply/demand "perfect storms" - we need to find our own.

The most important thing we can do is decentralize. Government runs on taxes, and it generates a small local economy. Spreading departments around the country would share the economy that OUR tax dollars create with everyone. I applaud King Paddy for suggesting that several departments be moved from Sarajevo to Mostar.

Secondly, we need to supply the local needs first. Each village, town, and city needs to be as self-sufficient as possible. The public must support this - buy local produce, clothing, and so on - even if it costs a little more.

We need to establish a Capital Development Fund for the diaspora. This would be a fund which the government can use to build infrastructure, whatever else - all very pinpointed and strategic. I don't know of a single Bosnian working abroad who wouldn't give *something*, no matter how small, to improve economic conditions in BiH.

Education is also very important. We need to change the university system. We cannot afford to be paying for university students to get an education and then leave. Neither can we afford to NOT offer a free education and condemn THOUSANDS, possibly hundreds of thousands in BiH to a life of ignorance. Thus we need to enact laws requiring graduates to work for 1 or two years in BiH, or to pay a certain, low percentage of their earnings elsewhere.

Those are my suggestions anyway. ;)

Mila, all the things that you've said, are happening in ALL of Ex-Yugoslavia! From the past of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and from what it has gone through in the last 10 years, it is a GREAT deal of things. Bosnia and Herzegovina got whipped around like a rag in the past decade, and before that it wasn't getting much better.

Give Bosnia and Herzegovina a decade or two, I know it's going to be a very important country in the future, and time will give the economy more experience in the new type of economy. :)

Do you really think that a year after the war people EVER thought that we'd accomplish even half as much as we have to this current day? NO!!! If we just continue to keep moving, have our economy progressing, give it some experience, it'll show us all Bosnia and Herzegovina to be better than ever. :)

Mabye I put it in the wrong words. I didn't mean important as in USA, Germany, UK, etc. I just thought more important as in, other countries admirring the economy, the cities, and things like that. I don't want Sarajevo loosing it's charm, or Mostar taking it's bridge down to build something instead. Those problems that you are talking about aren't exactly only for Bosnia and Herzegovina, if you haven't realized. The surrounding area, such as Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia, Croatia are also having the same problems when it comes to the issues that you've stated. :|

Did I say the opposite?... I am aware that the problem is not isolated to BiH. And indeed, I wouldn't encourage those from the other places you've listed to come back unless they've got $$$. Remember, in most of ex-YU, the youth in general still wants to leave. What's the point in going to 4 years of university, for example, only to end up unemployed?

As for your information about "the future not looking any brighter", you'll probably have to look at the information on Bosnia and Herzegovina, before making your assumptions. :ohno: The economy is growing, and that means that more jobs will be made.

Political instability, outdated infrastructure, relatively expensive labour costs, etc. are real problems. You are correct that the economy is growing, but if the GDP is very low to begin with (and in this case it is - what is it now, 11B?), 5% growth is hardly good news. Even this growth is questionable in the near future, as economic diversification is just not happening on a large scale. It's not all lost... but let's try to be realistic here.

Right? If more jobs are made, that means more people will HAVE the jobs. Right? If more people HAVE the jobs, that means that the current unemployement rate will fall. Right?

The unemployment rate will fall eventually. But falling from 'unacceptable' to 'still unacceptable' isn't exactly good news.

I know what your talking about, but the only thing I'm basically saying is that all the countries in the region have those problems, or even more. From what Bosnia and Herzegovina has accomplished in the last decade should make everyone proud, considering that what was left after the war was either worthless and totally wardamaged, and now it's all comming back. If Bosnia and Herzegovina keeps moving at this pace, there is no doubt that it can accomplish some great things in the near future. Trust me on that one...

Thank you for the compliments, but you need to realize some things. First of all, Bosnia and Herzegovina isn't a 'large' country at all, since it is only a small piece of a medium sized country. When you said, 'healthy', I assume that your speaking for the economy and government? :dunno: The government has improved greatly in the past decade, and government stability is comming along well, it's just you can't really expect a country to cool down that easily after a war, even though it was 10 years ago...The economy does have some good potential, and I do believe in about 10 years Bosnia and Herzegovina will probably be in the EU (if things run smoothly), have a stable government (including the people at peace), and if the economic progress continues, have an excellent economy.

Remember, that is only if things run smoothly like they have been in the most part lately, if something goes out of order, it'll take longer to become a wealthy, stable nation. :)

When all these cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina get renovated, I'm sure that all these cities will look absolutely beatiful. Just cleaning them up, putting some fresh paint on the buildings, and it'll be AMAZING!

Some people really hate how there are some commies in Sarajevo, but I don't mind them at all. I mean, once all of the commies get a new coat of paint on them, I so no reason no anyone not to like them.
I would never consider a commie block a skyscraper, but I do think they are pretty impressive. Keeping MANY peolpe in a tall building, which increases the cities density, if newly painted they look GREAT, and are "pretty" cheap to build. :)

The Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo- trully one of the most beautifull landmarks of Sarajevo and yet, it is still at the mercy of local polititians and mother nature. This building need immediate restoration from inside and outside. It is trully sad to see it fade away in front of our very eyes unless something is done soon.

I N F O R M A T I O N
ON THE DRAMATIC CONDITION OF THE BUILDING OF THE
ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS IN SARAJEVO

Immediately upon the end of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo addressed the president of Centar Municipality of the time with the information on the necessary restoration of the building and its exterior arrangement, among other things because the Centar Municipality had allocated considerable resources to this purpose immediately before the war. At the time, the president promised to the Dean of the Academy that the earlier municipal decision would be carried out.

The Academy has thereupon addressed the University in Sarajevo, cantonal and federal ministries of education and culture, city and municipal authorities with a few requests for financial support for the building restoration and exterior arrangement around it.
The restoration is necessary in order to prevent further decay of the facility and ensure the safety of passers-by.
We point out that the facility is included in the high-ranking cultural heritage and, with its location, is one of the key symbols of the city.
The building of the Academy, at Obala Maka Dizdara 3, was erected in 1898 as an Evangelist Church, and in 1911 the wings were added, which is proven by the tablet still placed on its front.
In 1968 the building became state-owned, and in 1981 it was adapted and added upon for the needs of the Academy of Fine Arts, which it houses to this day.
During the 14th Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, divine services for all the Anglican Olympics participants were taking place in this building.
In 1996 the dome was rebuilt and part of the roof restored with donors’ support.
In 1999, teaching premises were added on the roof and the entire roof was restored.
Members of the Evangelist Church delegation, who visited us in 1999, were also informed on these works.
In order to speed up the process, the Academy funded the project of façade restoration with its own resources. It also has the urban approval and favourable opinion of Cantonal Institute for the Protection of Cultural, Historical, and Natural Heritage.
According to estimates by our architects who worked on postwar adaptations, the consolidation and reconstruction of the façade would cost about € 300,000.
Since the falling off of the façade parts increased last winter, the Academy allocated part of its own, generally insufficient resources for the acquisition of scaffolding that could at least partly alleviate the undesirable results of parts of the building falling on the passers-by, above all students, teachers and staff.

The city has a very nice feeling to it. There is a nice mixture of the old and the modern in the city, and I also like some of the destroyed buildings. They give such a nice, a honest, feeling to the place. Communist blocks next to older architecture. Green areas and cemeteries. Mountainous. People seem poor but there are also skyscrapers. Very contradictory, very nice.

^ Sarajevo is a strange sort of poor, yes. The older people don't mind it as much. They're happy with what they have. They'll sit on their balconies with coffee and cigarettes, watch the sun go down and be amazed that someone could ever think they didn't own the world. The younger people are more...self-conscious about it. You'll notice Sarajevo compares to Latin America in that way; young people try to dress as "richly" as possible; often people will spend money on designer clothing before they'll buy groceries or anything else. You'll meet a unusually high number of people in Sarajevo who will insist you hang out downtown, who - if you drive them home - will get you to drop them at the end of their street. The youth often aren't proud of their homes, etc. But there is such - what I call a "third world" closeness in Sarajevo. Everything makes noise, everything is a little bit louder than it is everywhere else, a little bit bigger, a little bit more...rough. There is more chaos, more music in the streets, more people breaking into drunken songs on the city trams. It's all things that I've grown to love, and that I feel are worth having.

It is *only* families that came here very recently that aren't mixed, that I know of. All my friends that have families that have been in Sarajevo for 50, 100+ years...are all mixed. Some a little, most a GREAT deal mixed.

One interesting demonstration of the poverty vs heart of Sarajevo - and, for that matter, most of the Balkans:
http://www.softic.org/Sarajevo2002/images/P0001459.jpg
^ Note the cheap, wooden crosses between the giant, marble tombs.

Bosnian families of all faiths will place a wooden symbol on the grave when the family member is burried. From then on, money will be saved - sometimes it takes weeks, sometimes, sometimes years - depending on the family. Once enough money is raised, the wooden symbol of removed, and a proper tombstone is placed over the grave. It's little things like this that I truly love.

The city has charm to it for sure....But it is sad to look at the older generations...they all seem to be worn-out by the whole think (end of WWII, the initial high hopes with communism, TiTo, reconstruction, life in a strong and prosperous country, then the slide...starting with the inflation of the 1980s...then reconstruction. It's like what they contributed in their lifetimes got discarded. The older folks seem disappointed...it's in their eyes.

^ Yes. The older people have a sense of self-blame. I've never heard anyone over 60 say: "The Croats ruined...", "The Serbs ruined...", "The Bosniaks ruined...", "The West ruined..."

But I've heard almost every old person I know say, "We ruined it, after Tito died. We let it fall apart." etc.

EDIT: My Grandmother's exact words: "We are a disgrace to Tito. He built it, with his own hands he built it. All we had to do was maintain, and we couldn't even do that. Wherever he is, he looks at us now with shame. That is why I do not have his picture up, I would be ashamed to look upon it."

Exactly. Since I was born in North America, when I went to visit last summer, I really wanted to hear what the locals there (regardless of the ethnicity..) had to say. I really enjoyed talking to the older men that were still proud of Tito and his fleet and the good ole days. I had to talk to them and absorb what they had to say, realizing that sooner or later that generation will be confined to the history books. I found it sad, especially when they were bolstering about the good days...Surprinsingly, the Croatians were less eager to discuss or even give some credit to the old Yugo. I was puzzled. verybody else had something positive to say...

I also Love, respect, and find Tito to be a very positive figure in the Former Yugoslavia, and to all Yugoslavs. I really see him as an example of how good things can really be, and that our future might be like it was with him. I find People in Yugoslavia, whether in Split, Banja Luka, Prishtina, Ohrid or where ever respect him for what he was, a noble, kind hearted, and all round True Yugoslav!

On the other side Former Yugoslavs in North America, resent him, view him as a bad man, a man that was against Serbs, Croats, Muslims, Realign, Democracy, and all these negative things! I really don't understand it. Perhaps it is well with The younger people especially, they want to be the BEST Serbs, BEST Croats, and BEST Muslims, they could be.. so Tito doesn't fall in to the cards.. I have heard form Canadian Serbs Tito is a liar, It was a conspiracy, his views and morals were all wrong, he was against these people ,he committed these crimes.. it is actually very hard for me, since now i usually don't talk about political things with my friends, to say even i respect Tito, but will never take off the picture i still have of him on my bedroom wall, i will always respect Josip Broz Tito!

Woow, come on this sounds like there hasn't been any pursuits of 'politically incorrect' Yugo inhabitants/ surpressing and distorting of WW2 history etcetcetc.

Don't get me wrong, I aswell respect him, but he is nothing special IMO. He could have done much more instead he was acting like a billionaire hunting women:D:|, enjoying life on his yachts and in x villas :|........................

Wow, this sounds as if you've just been listening to that beautiful :| speech that Draskovic delivered today. A nice example of what social psychologists refer to as 'priming'.

^I don't like Draskovic that much so no need to listen to any of his talks......
Still, your comment doesn't contribute to anything

It looks really nice, alive, sunny and there seems to be a lot of construction, yet the feweling is not lost. Nice bridge.

^ I'm amazing they scanned, branded, and uploaded the photos the night of the day they were taken. :) A nice treat.

Mostar is my second favorite city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. If you could combine Mostar, with Stari Grad/Centar Sarajevo...and finish it off with a little Dubrovnik on the edges...you'd have my heaven.

^ It is similar, Football Rules.

A question now for anyone with Ottoman architecture. I always assumed the channels in the streets were for rainwater.

My husband says that - as in Paris, London, and much of the world at those times - they were used for sewage. :(

Which is true?

I remember watching videos from Paris before WWII, and the people throwing buckets of sewage from their windows into the street, and thinking: My God, savages. :D

I refuse to believe it. Bosnia had indoor plumbing and functioning toilets since the beginning of time, now lets leave it. :D Hahaha

I feel sooo ashamed for loosing the link, but there was this really cool sight with really cool projects in Tuzla, with glass offices, and new apartment buildings. Really modern stuff. So, I'm getting ready to post this information (of about 25 projects) and the computer freezes. :ohno:
I go back onto Google search, and pray to find it again. I haven't seen ANYTHING similar to it again, and I'm sad. :(

Very nice. The first pictures are from Tekije in Blagaj. Blagaj, Pocitelj and Stolac are the oldest cities in Herzegovina. On top of that moutain above Tekije, there's Herceg Stjepan Castle, who ruled Herzegovina in middle ages.

FERHADIJA - FERHAT PASHA STREET

http://img24.echo.cx/img24/7210/image10nu.jpg

Ferhat Pasha Street is where Ottoman Sarajevo ends, and Austro-Hungarian Sarajevo begins.

Saraci street, lined on both signs with Ottoman shops and boutiques, changes its name to Ferhat Pasha Street at exactly the point where Austro-Hungarian architecture begins.

It is the city's main pedestrian avenue, and - in many ways - one of the city's main avenues, period.

It is, in my opinion, the grandest example of the Austro-Hungarian plan for Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Austrians wanted to implement a European ridgidness atop the haphazard, Ottoman design of Bosnian cities. Every major settlement in Bosnia-Herzegovina was expanded, at great expense, with often elaborate Central European-style buildings and districts.

This construction was used by the Austrians to develop Central European ways and customs among Bosnians of all ethnicities, especially Croats.

Magnificent Catholic churches were constructed with the better design elements of several styles from the Balkans and Central Europe.

It truly is a rare example, in European history, of an empire offering it's lifestyle as a gift, instead of forcing it on conquered peoples.

For these reasons, Ferhat Pasha Street is an important symbol of the Ottomans who founded and developed Bosnian cities, and the Austrians who were very careful and respectful of the heritage of this place.

ahhh...:)

excellent thread, it's magical how magical sarajevo is ;) i usually take this route with my friedns:

1. we take tram to skenderija
2. a walk to marshala tita, ferhadija
3. ivan goes to cathedral (even though he doesn't give a f*** about that, but to show us that he's a "real" croat)
4. we go for an ice-cream at egipat :)
5. i, marko, miloš and sanjin go to orthodox church (to show ivan we're REAL serbs :D - HE STARTED THAT! ;))
6. we go to bashcharchija to chevapi at hodzhich
7. than at markele for some things, and near (near shebilj) is tram station - ilidža - trolley - home :)

all that without ferhadija would be incomplete...--that was why i wrote this to all of you who were wondering "koji mu je kurac":D

The city of Sarajevo came into existence on the exact place whose center is the crossroads of East and West, of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, of Christianity and Islam, of Austrian boulevards and Ottoman shops, of modern skyscrapers and European squares...

The transition from East to West is more than a metaphor; in Sarajevo, it is reality. From the Ottoman East with it's magnificent mosques and Oriental architecture, through the Austrian Center with it's proud churches and European architecture, to the modern West with it's towering buildings and wide highways...
