View Full Version : Hail Rafa!
Toadboy March 27th, 2006, 08:45 PM and my advice for scouse and cockney stragglers is "run". :runaway:
Stragglers - we'll have 50,000 there minimum, tickets or not, this is a big day out for every Tom, Dick and Scally in Liverpool, loads of old scores to be settled etc., posh shops to be looted and GMP to be put down.
Me, I'm going to get an early train in, slink in to a smallish, centralish boozer (got a couple in mind) and hopefully have a few nice beers without hassle before the game. Straight to the station and home ASAP afterwards.

What,not staying to celebrate?
Toadboy March 27th, 2006, 08:56 PM Not likely, the place will be destroyed by then.
scouserdave March 27th, 2006, 10:16 PM yeah paul i went that game ur talkin about in march 1984. i was in the kippax stand (used to love going to maine road). i remember coming home on the coach after the game and a huge slab of concrete gettin flung over the m62 at a bridge. narrowly missed the traffic thankfully.
thinkin more rationally about it, i think it could be a recipe for trouble with 40,000 liverpool fans in town (bearing in mind how much the tension has arisen over the last few years between Liverpool and United). i think villa park would be a better venue (plus we never lose there! )
No comparison between Maine Road and Old Trafford. Citeh's ground was surrounded by a rabbit warren of Corrie Streets. There were some scary skirmishes around there in '84. I can't see there being much trouble in this Semi, unless anyones looking for it.
L11_Red March 27th, 2006, 10:29 PM Hopefully we'll win

i realise maine road was in the middle of rough and ready moss side dave and yeah in the 84 milk cup replay it did all go off. but it was still one of my fave grounds. like villa park steeped in tradition that you just dont get now at eastlands. also i felt a lot safer there than i ever did at old trafford (who can forget being at the scoreboard end at united and being pelted by missiles from the stand behind). in my experience, i found that Liverpool and City fans generally got on well (Obviously there was trouble for those who went looking for it).
anyways, now that the game is defo on at old trafford, we will turn it into a home game (just like we did against the villa at the same ground in 96). bagsy, luis garcia to get the winner and morinho to not accept that their team were actually beaten again by us!.
L11_Red March 27th, 2006, 10:36 PM Wonder if the "Red army" will make an appearance ? :horse:

You've just reminded me of us getting pelted by coins by the Southampton fans when they occupied the upper tier at Villa. Could be '86. Facts are correct, but stand to be corrected about the year.
Toadboy March 27th, 2006, 10:40 PM White Hart Lane, Dave?
scouserdave March 27th, 2006, 10:57 PM White Hart Lane, Dave?
Oh fuck! Wrong date and venue. What a wanker I am. They had the Upper East Stand, didn't they? It was the end looking to the right if you were in the away end (Park Lane).
I'm getting mixed up with a midweek semi (Milk Cup) aginst Portsmouth at Villa aren't I? Or was that the Portugal v N Korea WC Q.Final at Goodison in 1966?
Toadboy March 27th, 2006, 11:15 PM We had the away end and half the Shelf, I think we had the Upper Tier. They had the Paxton and Main Stand.
You probably got pelted with friendly fire.
Pompey was about '82 wasn't it? Madness them lot.
I loved Maine Road, but from personal experience it actually went off more there than OT, police had OT boxed off from the early 80's and although it got moody there and things happened, City guaranteed a snarl and getting legged or legging the locals up and down jiggers. One year when it was all going off some manc loon pulled out an axe and looked menacing before a bottle took him out and he got pummelled as the city mob melted. Even our last couple of games at City had problems, 350 Liverpool section 60'd, big kick off by the school as you come out of the away end - Urchins getting cavalry charged and coralled, buses getting bottled by drinkers at a previously friendly ale house (I sipped my Pimms quietly as the locals pelted Happy Als coaches!).
Maine Road had an edge, I miss it in some ways, but waltzing around the City of Manchester, 99% confident it isn't going to go off is probably preferable to us more saintly types.
Durbsboi March 28th, 2006, 07:20 AM So is Old Trafford gonna be turned into Anfeild number 2? They should cover up all the Man U signs & put the Liverpool Badge everywhere!
Paul D March 28th, 2006, 02:17 PM I've got a feeling there will be more seats on the pitch than in the stands at the end of the game.

Paul D March 29th, 2006, 02:38 PM Reds in talks with buyers Mar 29 2006
LIVERPOOL were today forced to make a Stock Exchange statement following interest expressed by Spanish entrepreneur Juan Villalonga.
However, the announcement of 'major investment talks' does not signal the end of the club's search for multi-million pound funding into Anfield.
Weekend reports confirmed the Spaniard has approached Liverpool, although his approach won't be successful.
Under strict Stock Exchange protocol, Liverpool are forced to publicly acknowledge they've been engaging in talks.
The Takeover Panel has been informed and the club has written to shareholders, but a brief moment of investment fever earlier today has proved premature.
Reds chief executive Rick Parry told the ECHO today: "Due to the reports over the weekend, we're obliged to make a statement and write to shareholders.
"It's a formality, but there has been no change to the situation."
The Liverpool statement read: "The board of Liverpool FC has noted the recent press speculation concerning possible third-party investment into the club and can confirm that it is continuing discussions with a number of parties regarding a potential investment of new funds into the club.
"Although the structure of any such investment is uncertain, it may include an offer for the entire share capital of the club. Shareholders will be kept updated as appropriate."
Last year, Redrow Homes founder - businessman Steve Morgan - made an unsuccessful approach to buy the club from chairman David Moores and before Christmas there were reports of potential investment by American billionaire Robert Kraft.
More recently, Villalonga has made no secret of his desire to buy into Anfield.

 That could become a reality!
Only noticed it now, when Garcia scored our 2nd on Sat against the blue shite, Reina ran all the way from his goal to celebrate with them in the Shites half!
Toadboy March 30th, 2006, 09:08 AM La Liga, now there's a challenge. Maybe Man United will hook up with the MLS.

Without a doubt.
zulu69 April 4th, 2006, 02:53 AM Alonso is class maybe better than Gerrard? Next season we will be challenging for the title for sure.
In some aspects yes, in others no. I think Rafa was spot on when he stated that our current crop of midfield players are perfect together. You have the power, endevour and will in Gerrard, the class and style of Xabi and the brute strength and defense of Momo and Hamann. I think in the middle of the park we can certainly match ANY team in the world and just about beat them.
The great thing i see happening is that Xabi's and Stevie's game are rubbing off each other. I find Xabi show glimpes of Stevie's power and intiative and Stevie show some of Xabi's composed and more fluid football; even on the right side of the park.
With our rock solid defence and keeper, we really only need (i feel) a dangerous strike force and a right winger. Most of our players are young and Rafa has bought enough for cover now. I reckon we should really challenge for honours next season, both domestically and in Europe.
Durbsboi April 4th, 2006, 08:44 AM ^^Toally agree, I think we have the best midfielders in the Premiership in a whole, no other team has 4 quality midfielders as us, Stevie the force behind Liverpool, the slick & accurate passing & crossing of Xabi, the strong yet pfast Momo & the German midfield machine of Hamman, all these guys control there part of the field. Defence is set with our back four, & from what I have seen when Rafa has swapped a few players the consistancy is still there. Our strikers are coming good now, prob by next season they will find their feet, I still feel Morientes isnt right playing for us, maybe we need to loan him out next season, prob to another Prem club, so he can find his feet in the Prem, for me his taking too long. Cisse was always a doubt in my mind, but after Sat performance I understand what plans Rafa has for him & Cisse executed it to perfection!

Pobbie April 5th, 2006, 09:45 PM Just thought I'd mention Gerard Houllier and how I'm totally made up for him. Lyon were cruelly beaten at the death last night by Milan, but it doesn't take away the achievement of this team which have established themselves as the dark-horses of European football. While I was always grateful to Houllier for the trophies he brought to Liverpool, I wanted him out because in my opinion he had lost the plot as well as the dressing room. I never hated him as a person and wished him well when he finally left us. Now he's flying. Moving from one managerial job to another is always hard when you leave a club on a low, but Houllier went to Lyon where he had great expectations to live up to: his predecessor Paul Le Guen won the title in each of his three years at the club and earned himself a reputation as one of Europe's top coaches. Houllier took over in the hot seat and has kept this league-winning run going, managing it in his first year in charge and certain to do it again this year. With Lyon now excelling in Europe, they are going from strength to strength. Good on you Gerard. :applause:
Durbsboi April 6th, 2006, 11:42 AM ^^ Must agree with you, at the end Houllier did loose the plot, but he did get us almost all the trpohies. His a good coach just like how Benitez is used to his spanish players, Houllier is used to his French players, hence guys like Traore, Cisse, LaTellac, & Senegalise frenchy's Diouf & Diao came to Liverpool, but some of them just didnt click with the rest of the squad. But now Houllier is back at his home & I think he already has the French league in the bag? & I was backing Lyon as the surprise this year, I told every one that last year Steven Gerrard lifted the Champs league & this year Gerard Houllier will lift it :) but no more, looks like Barca gonna take it.
scouserdave April 6th, 2006, 12:24 PM Just thought I'd mention Gerard Houllier and how I'm totally made up for him.
Class post Pob and I agree 100% Spare a thought for Roy Evans too. Another smashing guy who was found wanting at the end.
BTW, I loved Souness as a player. He is up there with Kenny, Ian St John (my fave as a kid) and Billy Liddell (no competition according to my oul fella - until he saw Dalglish!) as one of the best ever to play for the Redmen. When he was appointed as Manager, I thought it was inspired. How fucking wrong was I? :bash:

YNWA.
Toadboy April 20th, 2006, 10:21 AM Rafa knows the score, what he hasn't got is strikers capable of sealing the win but taking their chances when they come.
We can boss the game on Saturday, I'm convinced of that, what we will need to do is score instead of giving their keeper limp headers to collect and their defenders time to block a shot because our forwards ponder for too long.

Durbsboi April 21st, 2006, 02:38 PM well we all must have heard during the past few days that Real are interested in signing Gerrard in the summer, but here's wat he had to say.
Steven Gerrard has insisted he has no intention of getting embroiled in another summer of transfer speculation by declaring: "I'm happy and settled at Liverpool."
Real Madrid have this week made public their interest in signing the Anfield skipper as they look to build for the new La Liga campaign.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has insisted his captain his not for sale and the player himself has now reconfirmed his commitment to the club.
"I'm not going to get involved in all that kind of speculation again," he said.
"I'm settled and happy at Liverpool, and I'm not going to go through another summer like the last two.
"I'll be staying here until the day someone tells me they don't want me."
Gerrard, meanwhile, has insisted that victory over Chelsea tomorrow will serve as a warning notice that the Reds are ready to challenge for the Londoners' Premiership crown next season.
"A couple of years ago I was thinking we had to break up the top three of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United," he added.
"I definitely feel we've done that now, but maybe we've still got a bit to do to prove that to everyone else.
"If we can beat Chelsea this weekend and then continue to progress in the league next season, I'm sure everyone will be talking about us in the same breath as the others.
"We were in a similar situation to this in 2002. We'd made progress and got close to the leaders, but didn't push on. I definitely feel we're stronger now and in a position to kick on and build even more. I'm sure we're going to take that next step and we'll start getting closer to the league title more regularly.
"But we know going close isn't enough. We want to be winning trophies every season, so there's still a lot of work to be done."

Durbsboi April 24th, 2006, 08:12 AM We goin to Cardiff,
We goin to Cardiff,
We goin to Cardiff,
To win the FA CUP HEY!
Wat a fucking game! I was having my 21st birthday joll, I was running in & out of the house like an idiot, everyone thought I was gone mad! Risse's goal, magnificent! Then when I saw Garcia miss those 2 chances, I was thinkin it was gonna be one of those nights for him, but then then breakaway came, I saw Terry chasing him, so I screamed shoot dammit! Then he lobbed it over Cudducini! GOAL!!!!! Flip me, it was good. I think I might come to cardiif, when do tickets go on sale?
westisbest April 24th, 2006, 08:27 AM them pics don't work
Durbsboi April 24th, 2006, 12:27 PM yeh & the vid links on the red & white kop dont work either, ne one got the goals pleez. & ne one has that goal Cisse scored, well it wasnt really an atemp on goal, it was more like a cross that went wrong but ended up in the back of the net, I think it was against Wigan last year.
Durbsboi April 24th, 2006, 12:55 PM MOURINHO is the biggest faggot I have ever seen! did ne of u guys hear wat he said after the match?
"I am not worried at all about Liverpool and they have no chance of winning the Premiership title next season. We are 45 points ahead of Liverpool in the Premiership over the last two seasons and they have only beaten us twice in 10 games."
I think the nex time we play chelsea, we have to go all out & give them an arse whipping that nobody will forget!
Paul D April 24th, 2006, 02:13 PM We are 45 points ahead of Liverpool in the Premiership over the last two seasons
LOL the fact that someone has sat down and worked this out is a contradiction of what he had to say.
Steve C April 24th, 2006, 03:41 PM And since when was football played over 2 seasons?
30 points behind last season, 15 points this, and 10 ahead next. He's obviously worried about us as he never stops talking about us.
Tony Sebo April 24th, 2006, 04:09 PM I used to like him, but now that I have sussed what he is about I can't stand him... it is like coming across someone who seems refreshing and doesn't mind speaking their minds... you usually think there is another dimension to them... then you find out that they haven't... they're just moaning bastards!
he's probably exactly the same with his neighbours, his cousins and his bleedin older bro!
JUXTAPOL April 24th, 2006, 09:29 PM He is good at playing the Phsycological mind games bullshit, to gain that bit of extra advantage, but it hasn't worked twice now with Liverpool, so he is worried at the competition he will expect next year. -30, -15, +1.
Durbsboi April 25th, 2006, 07:50 AM ^^True that, the only team he is scared of is Liverpool, he doesnt worry that much about ManU or Arsenal, but when it comes down to us, he has always plenty to say. He knows that he & Benitez are currently the 2 top managers on many big clubs wish list's & his just worried about next season. Roman is getting board with the premier league, he made that clear last month, he wants more than just the league, he wants chelsea to dominate, & if Jose can give him that the next option is to get a new manager, & who's the next best?..............
begsy April 25th, 2006, 01:47 PM Sad news about the death of Brian Labone ex Everton center-half, a big man. remember him and Ron Yeates in a crunching tackle at Anfield, the stadium shuddered. R.I.P.
Tony Sebo April 25th, 2006, 02:00 PM Tis sad... used to see him around occasionally... as a matter of fact he was the first 'famous' person I ever saw in the flesh, as it where!

He's echoing what we all think of them I reckon.
Pobbie April 29th, 2006, 06:12 PM 3-1, mustn't grumble. Great to see us recover so soon after being pegged back.
Second place is unlikely, but could we pull it off?
Peyre April 29th, 2006, 06:26 PM why not. United were poor today, and will miss the spark of Rooney, I could see them drop points.
Durbsboi May 2nd, 2006, 10:23 AM UTD DREW! 1 point in it, with 2 teams already religated, its no more survival sunday,
its 2ND PLACE SUNDAY! If liverpool beat pompey & charlton manage a win or even a draw with the manc's we get 2nd!!!!
How was that game on Sat, we played like shit in the 2nd half, bu then Stevies snapped & went mad, good 2 goals though. A win is a win, I see Hammers got alot of injury problems, pray to god we dont have any trouble. See King Luis wont be able to play in da final, stupid FA.

Stupid Luis. If he hadn't gone to the floor like Arjen Robben neither player would have been sent off. All he had to do was walk away and get on with the game but he went down like a little girl drawing attention to the incident. He was also stupid to elbow Mullins and I have very little sympathy for him, I just hope he learns his lesson.
2nd place is still on. Listened to the game on the radio last night and United's players didn't seem interested, plus its Curbishley's last game on Sunday so he'll want to go out on a high.
If we beat Pompey, I'm confident we'll finish 2nd.
Durbsboi May 2nd, 2006, 10:47 AM hey how do you dlaod, from 'uploadspider'? I clicked on that 'click here' thing like a million times, but it justs refresh's the page!
DJ Billy May 2nd, 2006, 11:10 AM Whatever happens at the weekend, the team finishing 3rd will have the highest ever points total for a team finishing 3rd in the Prem (even when there were 42 games). In fact, 79 points would have been enough to win the Premiership in 4 previous seasons!
Doug Roberts May 2nd, 2006, 09:37 PM The match was played to support the Marina Dalglish Appeal, 33,000 turned up so thanks to all the toffees who were there.

Doug Roberts May 2nd, 2006, 09:46 PM Cheers Woody, I was in the lower centenary stand with mostly toffees around me , we all enjoyed a great afternoon.
Durbsboi May 3rd, 2006, 07:54 AM What was the score?
Doug Roberts May 3rd, 2006, 08:00 AM It hardly seemed to matter but for the record the Reds won 1:0 the goal scored by John Durnin, who I've never heard of before??
Toadboy May 3rd, 2006, 11:05 AM John Durnin was to be the 'new Ian Rush'. Never happened of course. He kicked about the lower reaches for a bit - Pompey, Carlisle, Crewe etc., but never made it at home.
L11_Red May 4th, 2006, 04:50 PM Anyone read the Liverpool way forum or the Irish examiner? :)
Was looking at this on various Liverpool forums:
http://forum.raotl.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=29533
Most amusing and great reply!
Toadboy May 4th, 2006, 05:33 PM That's Steve Kelly of Through the Wind and Rain fame - the daddy of all Liverpool FC fanzines.
He's spot on as usual.
L11_Red May 4th, 2006, 06:36 PM Is Through the Wind and Rain the more thinking mans Fanzine while Raotl is more the semi-hooligan type? :)
Toadboy May 5th, 2006, 10:34 AM Almost, RAOTL is more of a certain age than a certain type of fan, most of the fellas on there are vetrans of the 70's and 80's when football hooliganism was just part of the day out, they don't see a bit of bother as being something to get worked up about but most of them can't even walk without becoming breathless any more let alone run and fight!
Through the Wind and Rain is definately a more thought provocking and balanced perspective.
Durbsboi May 7th, 2006, 12:38 AM Tisk I said day, the last day of the Premiership 2005/06 season.
let us bow our head in prayer.
God may Charlton beat da shit out of da manc's
at the ground they call home,
giv alan curb's side the strength to get pass
the demons in that unholy place & buiry the UTD scum
in a swarm of goals,
God let Rafa's side over come the never say die pompey,
Let us score more than 5 goals & keep a clean sheet to
equal the clubs record & send the side into the record books
once again.
& by granting these favours for us almighty,
Liverpool will rightfully earn the 2nd sopt on
the log.
Amen
Paul D May 7th, 2006, 02:35 PM Liverpool Football Club will release a brand new re-working of the legendary Johnny Cash classic 'Ring of Fire' as their official song for the FA Cup final with all proceeds being donated to charity.
Originally penned by June Carter and Merie Kilgour, the song reached No.1 in the Country Charts when recorded by Cash in 1963 and now Liverpool Football Club are hoping to score a number one of their own when the new version is released next week.
Performed by 'The Boot Room All-Stars' - Tim Speed and Apollo 440 - and featuring the distinctive vocals of Echo and the Bunnymen frontman Ian McCulloch, the song will be available as a download only on liverpoolfc.tv. The single will first be available to download during the week of the FA Cup final.
All proceeds from the sales of the download will go to the Marina Dalglish Appeal, an organisation set up by Marina and Kenny Dalglish to raise money for a new Oncology ward at University Hospital Aintree.
'Ring of Fire' Trivia: Did you know?
Johnny Cash's version of 'Ring of Fire' was first adopted by Liverpool supporters travelling to away matches as long ago as 2002 but grew in popularity as the Reds trailed a blaze through Europe on route to last season's Champions League final in Istanbul.
The song was played in the Liverpool players dressing room in the Atatürk stadium in Istanbul before the Champions League final against AC Milan in May 2005 and after winning the game on penalties, Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard were caught singing the song's tune 'Der-der-der-der-der-der-der-derrrrrr' live on TV.
Ian McCulloch is a lifelong Liverpool supporter and Main Stand season ticket holder. He first started visiting Anfield as a young boy and his first hero was 'Sir' Roger Hunt.
The Boot Room All-Stars' version of 'Ring of Fire' contains backing vocals from the travelling Liverpool supporters at Old Trafford during the FA Cup Semi-Final victory over Chelsea and also the Kop during the final Premiership game of the season at Anfield against Aston Villa.
'Ring of Fire' was played by the English cricket team in the dressing room on the final day of the 3rd Test match against India on 22 March 2006. Inspired by the effect it had on the Liverpool players, England came out and took seven wickets for 25 runs in the space of 89 balls to complete their first victory on Indian soil for 21 years.
The Boot Room All-Stars featuring Ian McCulloch are not the first group to cover 'Ring of Fire'. Past cover versions of the track have been performed by Frank Zappa, Ray Charles, Grace Jones, Coldplay and Joaquin Phoenix.

Durbsboi May 9th, 2006, 09:05 AM Hey So wats the story on Mark Gonzalez? I heard his hot property in La Liga.
I hope they get his work permit sorted out fast, I was watchin our local Soccer show last night & Since Mark was born in Durban, South Africa & then immigrated to Chile with his family at a young age, he was mentioned quite a few times. The likes of Barca, Real, & many other Spanish teams are chasing his signiture after his season in the Spanish League.
According to Rafa, he said "Mark is going no where" , also mentioned in the show is that, Sean Right Phillips is guttered at not being picked for England for the world cup & is blaming his lack of appearances for Chelsea the cause of this, & rumors are going around that Liverpool want him. Also rumor's sprung up that Rafa is still chasing Defoe's signiture, so We know Crouch & Fowler are here to stay & Cisse Is flippin brilliant on the right, is Morientes's time up?
scouserdave May 9th, 2006, 09:14 AM I'm putting my head above the parapet here, but why don't we make a move for horseface? Heard the news today that Scum are offering to sell him for £10 million.
DJ Billy May 9th, 2006, 10:35 AM I remember Andy Gray saying earlier in the season that if we had Rooney and Van Nistlerooy up front we'd be running away with it. Half of that duo would be a bad start. I imagine that Liverpool is the last club that Ferguson would want to see him to though :/
scouserdave May 9th, 2006, 12:15 PM I remember Andy Gray :puke:
You have my condolences :)
Gareth May 9th, 2006, 02:32 PM I'm putting my head above the parapet here, but why don't we make a move for horseface? Heard the news today that Scum are offering to sell him for £10 million.
Would be great but I can't se it. I reckon he'll be off to the continent.
Durbsboi May 10th, 2006, 07:56 AM But according to Fergie, Van's off the pitch antics caused all the problems, & since we all know what a racist he is, would he cause problems with Cisse, Sissoko & our other coloured players?
I dont think Rafa will want him, but maybe if push comes to shove & we cant find a decent striker, we might have no option, also in the news is that Jose has given Hernan Crespo da boot! yes apperently Jose wants to line up a deal with AC to give them Crespo & pay fee for Shevchenko.
So Since Owen's not 100% fit, & Monkey face Ronney is injured, it looks like Crouch is Englands lead striker for the world cup. I think he'll be great, If he can win the balls & keep it up as he does for Liverpool, he can feed it off to that Wallcot kid , or Gerrard, Lampard or he can go for goal himself. As Rafa & Sven said you have so many options with Crouch.
Anyone going to the Cup Final on Saturday?
Steve C May 10th, 2006, 09:40 AM But according to Fergie, Van's off the pitch antics caused all the problems, & since we all know what a racist he is, would he cause problems with Cisse, Sissoko & our other coloured players?
What a silly thing to say................ Cisse won't be here next season!
Seriously though, why is RVN a racist? You don't know that, I don't know that so you shouldn't make such accusations.
Durbsboi May 10th, 2006, 09:46 AM ^^ It was said on a Dutch website & came in the papers, about how he racialy insulted Edgar Davids & other black dutch team mates in training, & had on field spites with them too, I am not making any accusations I am just telling ou guys what I heard, not trying to casue any problems here. & Rafa did make it quite clear that he has no intention of selling Cisse in the summer, I am not his greatest fan but he does play quite well on the right & he had a marvelous game against Westham playing on the left, unless Rafa finds a good right winger I see Cisse staying.
scouserdave May 10th, 2006, 10:37 AM What a silly thing to say................ Cisse won't be here next season!

The Longford May 13th, 2006, 08:28 PM Ive said before that i'll never forgive Neil Ruddock for his professional foul in the 1995 Fa Cup replay against Burnley but i always like to see Liverpool win stuff and win it well.
I think it was telling that were only a couple of bookings and virtually no moodiness - just exciting football played like it should be.
I resent some teams success but not Liverpool.
I doubt there are many Reds on these boards tonight but well done if you are!
paulmac35 May 13th, 2006, 08:39 PM just listening to the footy phone in on talk sport.okay west hame may have edged the game pocession wise and were unlucky to lose it so close to the end, but lets not forget liverpool scored 3 wonder goals and west hams 3 were lucky to say the least. get in there stevie g

Doug Roberts May 14th, 2006, 10:54 AM Football fans rightly talk about the 1953 Cup Final as the Matthews final. This was the Gerrard final, an amazing performance with goals good enough to grace any final.
England manager Eriksson should make a big decision now before the World Cup and make Gerrard the England captain. Instanbul and Cardiff have shown that he can lead a team to victory, the current one is well past his sell by date.

Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart

Pietari May 15th, 2006, 11:53 AM Yet another chapter in the history books May 15 2006
Deborah James joined the travelling army of Merseyside fans in Cardiff to witness another legendary occasion
Daily Post
LIVERPOOL FC don't win cup finals any more. They win amazing, emotion-drenched, unforgettable cup finals.
Rafael Benitez and his team wrote another famous chapter in the Anfield history books on Saturday as his team pulled off yet another memorable comeback to defeat a gallant West Ham and clinch the FA Cup.
With a running order reminis-cent of the club's Champions League victory in Istanbul 12 months ago, Saturday's season finale - the last FA final scheduled for Cardiff's Millennium Stadium - proved to be the most gripping in recent times.
For the 24,000 LFC fans who made it inside "Anfield South", it was a white-knuckle rollercoaster ride of pure theatre finishing with a penalty shoot-out that left the entire crowd needing to remind themselves to breathe.
As two-goal match hero Steven Gerrard lifted the 125th FA Cup - the seventh to be kissed by a Liverpool captain since the club started their collection in 1965 - it felt like it could have never turned out any other way.
After all, it was Liverpool who had won Cardiff's first hosting of the event against Arsenal in 2001 and enjoyed it so much, they have now returned for an astonishing seven major finals there.
"We always win in Wales" sang the fans in the bars late into the night and the fates in the Principality once again appeared to shine on the Anfield team. Wembley can wait.
Admittedly, it had all appeared so much different just a few hours earlier as Jamie Carragher's own-goal and Pepe Reina's goalkeeping slip had left Liverpool with a 2-0 deficit and a mountain to climb.
It was a gut-wrenching start for the Red half of the crowd, who before kick-off were brimming with confidence and boasting that Liverpool's history would surely see them through to a jubilant evening.

John Matrix 1985 May 18th, 2006, 03:37 PM After seeing Paddy Shennans' "10 reasons to be proud to be an Evertonian" here is my alternative list:
1. No matter what anyone ever says, Everton would have won the European Cup three or four times if Liverpool* hadn't got us banned out of Europe. There is no doubt that this would have happened, it is fact. This argument can be dragged on for years, years, years and fucking years, even though other teams have managed to get themselves back on track ever since and the ones who did suffer just got on with it.
2. We are the Peoples' Club - not like Liverpool* - their supporters all hail from Norway, Ireland, Surrey and Singapore, ours are all salt of the earth scousers. All the people who turn up at Liverpool victory parades are cardboard cut outs, Evertonians who got paid a lot of cash to wear Liverpool tops or fans from above places who got last minute deals to fly into Liverpool. The Peoples Club was invented by a ginger scotsman who never visited the city. previously.
3. Wayne Rooney - once a Blue always a Manc.
4. Liverpool* can never win trophies properly, despite winning 5 European Cups, 18 League Championships, 7 FA Cups, 7 League Cups, 3 UEFA Cups & 3 European Super Cups these have all been won by default, spawny goals, bad refereeing decisions, shafting Everton, penalty shoot outs and favourable cup draws. Everton have never been lucky and Hans Segers was not at fault for Evertons' 3rd goal in a relegation battle, nor was Boltons' goal over the line in another relegation battle a few years later.
5. Supporting Everton is great - you get to support so many other teams as well, mainly anyone who plays Liverpool. The first half of the 2005 Champions League Final must be the highlight of any Evertonians life.
6. Duncan Ferguson. A living legend apparently, was constantly injured and bladdered, got paid shedloads of cash whilst sitting on his arse, got a standing ovation at a game when he had just been released from prison for assault, poor scoring record, sulked and wouldn't play for Scotland anymore, all this pales into insignificance because he managed to score a few against Liverpool* in a couple of derbies in the mid/late 1990's before he left for Newcastle. Ranks alongside Dixie Dean as one of the all time legends of Goodison Park, God knows why.
7. Bill Kenwright. A true blue who would do anything for the club, mainly keeping his cronies on the board, putting off any potential investors and constantly telling everyone how much of a great Evertonian he is, blotted his copybook recently by stating that when he hears "You'll never walk alone" that it brings a tear to his eye and he is overcome with emotion. Needs to be in the spotlight a lot, especially at the start of the Villareal game but nothing much has been seen of him since.
8. Recently celebrated 100 years of top flight football - if only medals were given out for just hanging around.
9. Most of Liverpools' * greatest players were Evertonians as a child, they obviously watched the great Everton teams of the past and learnt from them.
10. Greatest night of Evertons' history was beating a poor Bayern Munich side in a 2nd rate European competition.
* = Redshite

TheBoy May 18th, 2006, 07:30 PM if any evertonians actually believe that there are more scousers who support them they must be kidding themselves, there is no way, in my school class there were 30 people, 22 reds and 8 blues, i no that is no way conclusive but it always seems to be about that ratio 2:1
L11_Red May 18th, 2006, 07:35 PM Probably is more Liverpool fans in Liverpool than Everton but i reckon more Everton fans go the game.
Gareth May 18th, 2006, 07:46 PM I've heard there is a 60:40 ratio bias towards Everton. Of course that's locally, not worldwide. I'm not sure what's classed as local, for all I know, Huyton may be classed as a worldwide support base because it's not under Liverpool City Council.
Steve C May 18th, 2006, 07:52 PM In my experience it's about 50-50 in Liverpool.
Globally there's no contest, but Everton have their fair share of Yorkshire, Wales and London blues aswell. I've been on the M62 travelling from Liverpool to Yorkshire after an Everton home game and I saw more blue shirts than ford mondeos!
Toadboy May 18th, 2006, 08:59 PM Arf.
The 'Peoples Club' announced by a Glaswegian on his first ever visit to the city, prompted by a bitter actor who probably read Kennys biography in which he proclaims Liverpool FC as 'a club of the people', note the constitution of Kennys statement based on 14 years of personal experience, against the ginger pretenders first of many crass and divisive quotes, aimed at down trodden bitter elements of Everton support at the expense of everyone else.
There's no way Everton come close to 50/50 parity with Liverpool across the city, that went in the 1970's. There's more scouse reds go to the match than Evertons overall average gate in the league while the midweek games are a no contest. On the few occassions (2 that I recall) Liverpool and Everton have been on the telly on the same night, the reds got the big screen and slammed all the pubs while the half dozen or so blues had to make do with portables plonked on the end of the bar.

Liverpool FC 5 Times European Champions
John Matrix 1985 May 25th, 2006, 01:47 PM Was in Melbourne last year watching it at 4am in the morning, booked the holiday a week before the Olympiakos game because I never actually thought we'd get that far, let alone win it.
I remember my bird having a cob on as i woke her up that early to watch it in our room as all the bars were closed and if there were any, I couldnt be arsed traipsing round Melbourne all night and missing out. After the first half i turned off as I didn't want to watch some random australians going on about how much of a different class Milan were in the half time analysis. I even said I wouldnt watch the second half, to which she replied "You f***in better had, waking me up this early, anyway they might get a goal back or two" - to which I said "Its the Champions League Final Love, not Escape to Victory", however, they managed to prove me wrong.
The dodgy Australian channel had the commentary 3 seconds ahead of the pictures so the penalty shoot out was bizarre, Serginho stepped up to take the penalty and the commentary already stated he'd blasted it over the bar. After the game they cut short the celebrations to focus on how great it was that Harry Kewell had got a Champions League medal and how great it was for Australian "Soccer" that both him and Craig Johnston had won the CL with Liverpool.
Only the next day when I saw it on the news did I actually believe it happened and I hadnt had a bizarre dream.
Tony Sebo May 25th, 2006, 07:52 PM Morientes is off to Valencia
he said "those people on that ssc website were really getting on my nerves"
Blabbernsmoke May 25th, 2006, 08:41 PM Going by recent news I thought he'd be staying on. A part of me kept thinking, he's about to start scoring the goals, he's about to return to his Monacco form. But I've been doing this ever seince he jpined 16 months ago. Although he always did some fantastic work on the pitch, with some very classy maneuvers, in terms of being a striker and a hit man he has been a flop.
If Liverpool can get a prolific striker they will challenge for the league no problem. They have the bext defence in the league, and a superb midfield. They only finished 9 points behind Chelsea- I'm willing to bet that could've been closed had there been, say, 10 extra goals in those games where they dominated but walked away with a draw or a loss.
Who do you guys reckon Liverpool will get in then? Has anybody heard any gossip on strikers?
Happy 5 Day everybody!
Happy Istanbul Day!

Toadboy May 26th, 2006, 03:19 AM Friggin Nora that was good.
Got my hands on the big pot and hoisted it, much to the annoyance of the LFC staff and official photographer, balls to them I LOFTED THE EUROPEAN CUP.

lol, I'm sure we were, me same as blabber, always thinking no Mori will hit form soon, but I'm sure we'd have to wait forever. Bet u 50quid he'll be Valencia's highest scorer next season :?
If you check that Transfer news thread in the sports field section I put down some news of a dutch striker, kryt or kryut looks good to me. England B had a shocker last night, see that the Norwich goalie pulled his balls, so Carson came on for him, he did well uptil Bella's 2nd.

Gazzab June 8th, 2006, 01:24 AM It looks like Cisse broke his leg again! Just watching the live France v China game on Eurosport. He fell awkwardly after a tackle and his shin just above the ankle appeared to give way. Eurosport are shite for follow up news in live games, so heard nothing further so far :bash:
Luckily for him it was the other leg to his first brake. If it had been the same brake on the same leg, I think that would have been the end of his footy career.
John Matrix 1985 June 9th, 2006, 10:44 AM Cisse's injury has hit Rafas' spending plans as the deal with marseille was almost done and dusted. We are now being linked with Craig Bellamy as he has a clause in his contract that he can be sold for about 6 million quid.
What I want to know is why do Liverpool now need to sell to buy?. We have one of the largest fan bases in the world, we have qualified for the Champions League now 3 years in a row and won it once, where has all this money gone?. Tottenham and Newcastle have not qualified for the CL yet are still able to spend more than us.
Each season we are told that we need to bridge the gap between us and Chelsea/Man U/Arsenal etc yet we never seem to have any ambition regarding buying top international players, not talking about wasting 30M plus on Shevchenko but we should be able to spend decent amounts on players without thinking. I know Benitez is a fantastic manager and can spot bargains like Sissoko but won't he get sick of constantly looking around the bargain basement with one hand tied behind his back?
Are any other Liverpool fans as pissed off as I am about the way the club is being run and the fact that we don't seem to be building on any of Senor Benitez's hard work?
Blabbernsmoke June 9th, 2006, 11:43 AM John,
I couldn't have put it better myself. I've been keeping an keen eye on the transfer market and what the Reds are up to and I just don't get why they're acting so hard up.
As you put it, they must've earned millions from the CL and the rest. Of course, having other rich clubs to compete with doesn't help as they push up costs- it's not just Chelsea, but other European clubs spend big as well. But yeah, I don't know why Benitez is getting restricted so much because of Cisse. They can still sell him in a few months. The new stadium might be an issue in all of this. Also, LFC needs to get a move on with attrracting new money- the way Chelsea and Utd have.
The other frustrating thing is that Liverpool have won CL last season, improved massively in the league this season and won the FA cup- a lot of players must surely think it is a club on the up and a good place to move to????
I've heard that a deal to buy Alves from Real Sociadad (?) is expected, Gonzalez is expected once the Home Office stop being fucking wankers and give the work permit, then they are after the striker, Kuyt from Feyernaud and Bellamy from Blackburn. They also signed a giant centre back from Argentina but he's young, and I can't remember his name. In any cae, a club like Liverpool should be getting these players no problem!
John Matrix 1985 June 9th, 2006, 12:15 PM Blab,
A lot of what you say is true, the stadium might be sapping the cash but the fact that nothing has happened on it for nearly 4 years is a joke. Not all of it is the boards' fault, we have the objectors, the council and the NWDA all messing about. If it is going to be that much of an issue arent they better pulling out and trying to rebuild the main stand, would this be beneficial at all? - the new stadium is only another 10/15000 - is it really worth the hassle?
Yep, Liverpool won the CL and the FA Cup and took part in the World Club Championship, you'd think that the likes of Ballack and Shevchenko would eye that as a club on the up, instead we get a 2nd rater like Victor last year dithering about joining us in January from Deportivo.
The new players might make a difference but I can't comment personally as I have not seen Palletta the Argentine play but I trust Rafas' judgement. There are conflicting reports about Aurelio the Brazilian left back from Valencia, according to some he's already signed on a free but other reports say he has yet to sign. Kuyt would probably cost about 10-12 million and we still need a decent right midfielder. As for Gonzalez he looks decent with a lot of pace. Don't know why the Home Office rejected his application, they said Chile were not in the top 70 ranked nations, yet they were able to grant a work permit to the Zimbabwean who plays for Portsmouth. Zimbabwe have never qualified for the WC and struggle to make the African Nations Cup regularly.
We need a decent shirt sponsorship deal too - Shalke and Dortmund have better deals than us, we are something like 16th or 18th in the list of sponsorship deals.
John Matrix 1985 June 9th, 2006, 02:41 PM Anyone see that Steven Gerrard documentary the other night? - Alex Curran sounds common as muck!
Paul D June 9th, 2006, 02:51 PM On sky sports news the other day the they were in Liverpool and the piece started off by saying "everyone knows Liverpool is football mad but they are also passionate about something else,England" and that was the whole purpose of the story, what a complete load of crap it's probably the most unpatriotic city in Britain are they trying to brainwash us all.

Paul D June 9th, 2006, 03:09 PM I think its more to do with the way the London press carry on more than anything, they go over the top over all the time.
John Matrix 1985 June 9th, 2006, 04:09 PM The hype is ridiculous - every day about wayne Rooneys foot - even Eriksson got sick of it at the press conference yesterday.

I don't know why the Home Office got involved full stop. It's not like he's going to be claiming dole and running round mugging people is it? He's going to be a very well paid footballer. They were just being twats even bothering with that one.
As for the stadium, they need the new one so that they can expand into the future. What is Old Trafford on now- 70,000-75,000? In the future I can see Old Trafford reaching 90-100k. Liverpool need to compete with this, not just making the present stadium bigger which would only be a short term answer.
To be honest, I don't think the club has been run very well from a business point of view. What you said about the sponsorship says it all, and other clubs make a lot more on merchandise and things like that. I'm starting to hope some fat, yank pig buys up half the club just so a load of cash and business acumen gets pumped in. It's disgraceful that a club with Liverpool's history is falling behind the likes of Arsenal in terms of its stadium. The board seem to be quite cumbersome and old fashioned at times. This obviously has its benefits in some ways. But the game is so money oritentated now that the likes of Utd and Chelsea, even Arsenal and Tottenham, can't be allowed to run away.

Dello June 10th, 2006, 11:13 AM Cisse's injury has hit Rafas' spending plans as the deal with marseille was almost done and dusted.
Are any other Liverpool fans as pissed off as I am about the way the club is being run and the fact that we don't seem to be building on any of Senor Benitez's hard work?
where has the money gone?. Try reevaluating Houlliers transfer dealings. He very nearly bankrupted LFC.
Toadboy June 10th, 2006, 11:40 AM Money.
Still as it ever was, £20 million + surplus every year, reinvested in the team. The club is suffering from a series of big money buys that didn't work out though. All the same the club still invests heavily on it's playing side and it's net spend is very high.
Houlliers transfers nearly bankrupted Liverpool? Not even close.
Liverpool out sell Man United in the merchandising stakes but merchandising is small element in the big picture, gate money, telly money, sponsorships and corporate packages are where it's at and it's gate money and corporate revenues that hurt Liverpool.
Sponsorships are cyclical and Liverpool will command a deal that will be one of the biggest in Europe this time next year. The club fucked up last year when they were close to tying up a deal with LG (according to Ronnie Rumour) but when LG pulled out and Liverpool didn't have at least one other suitor hovering it ballsed up the kit release and led to problems with Reebok etc. For that alone Parry should have been sacked, it's meant a year or two on hurried contracts with suppliers and sponsors at vastly under valued amounts.
The stadium is a major element of the future Liverpool FC, the more and more I see of it, the less the present propsals make sense, capping the capacity at the level they have will hurt the club in the future, the capital cost of a larger stadium versus increased revenues may not stack up at currently but what about a 20 year masterplan to get 70/80,000? As far as the timscales are involed this seems to be par for the course, if Liverpool go on site withing the next yaer and are in for 2009/10 that'll be about the same time frame as Arsenal and Ashburton Grove, I can only think that the only delay now is finace or certainly the constitution of the financial package.
John Matrix 1985 June 10th, 2006, 12:00 PM With regards to Houllier, he was guilty of a few poor buys such as Diouf, Diao & Cheyrou but that was 20M total. Heskey was poor eventually sold for half his original value, Cisse was his last "signing" but Liverpool havent paid the whole 14M yet, apparently only about 10. Its not like Houllier was buying Verons every season for 27M and flogging them to Bolton for 500 grand.
From what I've been told, you get 330 grand for a live TV game, Liverpool were probably live on TV about 50 times last season, the previous season wasnt much different.
Is it worth moving to a new stadium when its only going to increase capacity by 10/15 K? - surely 70,000 would be a more realistic figure, there is still a long waiting list for a season ticket and you'd still get people turning up on spec rather than watching it in a pub.

McGrath June 21st, 2006, 12:33 PM I'm not a red, but just to add to this...
I was watching the game on ITV last night. After the 1st goal, Clive Tyldsley made one idiotic comment too many (I think it was along the lines of 'the next goal will be the World Cup's 2000th goal, Swedes need not apply') so I went to listen to the gaem on Radio5. The radio coverage is so far ahead (in terms of time) of the telly that when Gerrard scored, I had time to run into our lounge, switch on the telly and see the ball hitting the net. And this is followed a second later by the pub opposite exploding with screams. It can very confusing at times.

At least you got three times the enjoyment. :)
McGrath June 21st, 2006, 02:32 PM Yes, a sort of footballing multiple, er, 'climax'.
I'd watch all of the World Cup if it were just the BBC broadcasting the games (minus Ian Wright. Oh deary me). And what's with the gimmicky mini-microphones that the ITV pundits are using? Crap. Even worse than Tyldsley is that Peter Drury fella, he'd bring a touch of melodrama to the most trivial of moments. Dire.
DJ Billy June 21st, 2006, 03:33 PM There are far too many crap commentators out there these days, describing even the most routine bit of play as "amazing", "fantastic" or "brilliant" (Alan Parry and Bryan Marwood, step forward); giving significance to the dullest of facts ("the manager of the English team hotel has the same size feet as their coach driver in 1966. Is that an omen?"); or simply describing everything as "ironic", when it clearly isn't. Alan Green is decent, but if the game is dull he just spends the whole time moaning. Bring back Barry Davies. He never over-commentated and anything that he did say was intelligent.
I'm glad that England's remaining game(s) are on the beeb. At least they have decent analysis, rather than the occasional soundbites that are fitted in between the commercials on ITV.
John Matrix 1985 June 21st, 2006, 04:23 PM What is with those stupid headsets on ITV? - they look like earcleaners sellotaped to their faces. How is Robbie Earle able to provide "expert analysis" when he jumped on the Jamaica bandwagon for the 98 WC and hardly ever played for them again? - to my knowledge he never did much in club football either!

kung_fuzi July 5th, 2006, 05:06 PM RAFA'S DELIGHT AS REDS WIN GONZALEZ APPEAL
Steve Hunter 05 July 2006
Rafael Benitez was celebrating today after Chilean international Mark Gonzalez was given the green light to begin his Liverpool career.
The left winger was granted a work permit after a successful hearing on Wednesday morning, and Benitez believes 23-year-old Gonzalez is a player who will not only enhance his team but also excite the supporters.
"This is very good news for us and I am absolutely delighted to welcome Mark Gonzalez to Liverpool as he is a player the supporters will like to see," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv.
"Mark is an exciting left winger who can cross good balls and beat defenders and he is a very good signing for us. He has a very good mentality as when I was talking with him he told me, 'I want to play for Liverpool'."
Gonzalez spent last season on loan in La Liga with Real Sociedad after he was initially refused a work permit to join Liverpool from Spanish side Albacete.

kung_fuzi July 5th, 2006, 05:07 PM REDS CONFIRM AURELIO CAPTURE
Steve Hunter 05 July 2006
Liverpool have secured the capture of Fabio Aurelio, with the Brazilian left back putting pen to paper on a four-year deal at Anfield this afternoon.
Aurelio won a Spanish La Liga title under Benitez at Valencia and becomes the first Brazilian to play for Liverpool.
"Fabio is a player with a lot of quality and he is a really good signing for us," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv.
"His technical ability is fantastic and he has a great left foot and provides the team with a lot of options. He has a really good mentality and he is a winner."

Paul D July 5th, 2006, 05:08 PM That Argentinian Palleta signed as well.
kung_fuzi July 5th, 2006, 05:08 PM PALETTA PUTS PEN TO PAPER ON REDS DEAL
Paul Rogers 04 July 2006
Rafael Benitez today welcomed Gabriel Paletta into the Liverpool fold and immediately insisted our latest signing has the qualities to match the inspirational leadership of Jamie Carragher.
The young Argentinian defender was at Melwood yesterday for the first day of pre-season training but put pen to paper on a 4-year contract today.
Having followed the youngster's progress for some time, Benitez was delighted to have secured Paletta's signature and said: "I've worked with other Argentinian defenders in the past and there is a good tradition of tough, aggressive and tactically strong defenders from the country.
"Paletta is very tough and he's exactly the sort of player we need who will suit the Premiership. When you talk about the Argentinian defenders I worked with in Valencia, Paletta is more like Ayala than Pellegrino. If you're talking about Liverpool, he's more like Carra than Sami Hyypia. This is good because we will have a balance in the style of defenders.
"He is a defender with a lot of aggression and we're sure he has a great future. He will learn a lot here, like Daniel Agger, and provide competitiveness in our defence.
"We were watching him in the World Under-21 championships in Holland. That's when our scouts spotted him and we identified him as the kind of player we'd like.
"He has attracted a lot of interest from top clubs in Argentina like River Plate and Boca Juniors. River Plate even reserved a number six shirt for him, so we had to move quickly to sign him. We're delighted to have done the deal now."

kung_fuzi July 5th, 2006, 05:10 PM Looks like Rafa means business this season.

Super news. Even though I'm a Yeoville supporter, I've always had a soft spot for the Reds as my Premiership team.
There's Bellamy as well, and Rafa is interested in Kuyt who has been a prolific goal scorer for Feyernord.
Looks like they're really building from the back with all the defensive players signed. The midfield is already class, plus Bellamy and hopefully another striker. Should take the team into a new dimension.
