Atlanta's skyscrapers are getting boring. The lighting is boring and conservative and we've all seen it before.

So how would you pimp out some of Atlanta's most famous skyscrapers? Replace the light on top of SunTrust with a huge laser? Wrap BofA in a huge neon sprial? Reproduce BellSouth's lighting scheme from the Olympics? Huge glowing eye between the cupolas of 191? Cloak of darkness to totally hide the ugliness that is called Peachtree Summit? 10,000 robotic insects with flashlights crawling around the top of Atlantic Center?

What would you do to put excitement into Atlanta's boring skyscraper lighting?

@MattSal - Yeah, sounds like a plan. I have got some rope light in my garage, and we can make the outlines of a few dragons on the GP Building.

I think BoA would look good if it were lit like Dalla's BoA, with all pf it's vertical setbacks.

Are you serious with this? Atlanta has one of the best night time skylines in the country. You want to talk about boring skyscraper lighting, try Houston.

I know you guys are mostly just passing ideas on how to make the Atlanta skyline appear a little different at night, but after reading the word "boring" when describing the lighting there, I just had to add my two cents.

Ok, back to your brainstorming.

Indeed. Not everything has to be bling bling these days. I personally prefer postmodern architecture, with postmodern details, which is why building-for-building, Atlanta has my favorite skyline. (well, yes...I like it as much as I love my Houston skyline). Atlanta's collection of towers is just stunning..I mean..from One Atlantic, to BOA, to 191..all the way to the new Symphony Tower (glass..but..still nice). So..I'll take substance and elegance over blingbling, thankyouverymuch.

OH, and besides, We don't want anyone jacking anything from these buildings now, eh?

^I agree with DuskTrooper, elegance and taste not bling bling... I think Atlanta's skyline lights up well in the regard, NO NEON!

Yes, let's make the light on top of SunTrust a reading light for astronauts in space. Kind of like the Luxor . . .

I agree Atlanta already has one of the most impressive well lit night time skylines. And boring nah, Atlanta has it happening and has taste and class.
And this comes from a non American that lives in Europe.

Very early this morning, I was on my flight going back to Chicago from Atlanta, and they flew around the whole city, so I got some great views of the skyline lit up. I took some pictures but they are horrible, though the ones I took of Chicago's skyline from the plane flying back to South Bend turned out quite well. Go figure.

Dude I just got back from Paris and they put a spotlight (rather, the illusion of one) on top of the Eiffel Tower, BUT even cooler they covered the tower head to toe in strobe lights that flash for 10 minutes every hour. It was the coolest thing I've ever seen. I think any tired old building that did that here would blow people away. Also, I think they could put a Jumbotron on the side of a boring concrete box and make it totally sweet.

Hey Stratosphere 2020: Ajax! Ja! Ja! Ja! Je bent niet en Feyenoord fan hopelijk, but I did pass through Rotterdam on the train to Paris and was very impressed with the skyline.

Yes, Peachtree Center is just too ugly.

Imagine if Peachtree Center ( The small buildings between Westin and Marriott ) were taller in this pic.

You iknow I think Peachtree Center is here to keep The Marriott Marquis and the Westin Peachtree Plaza from fighting.

^I don't know if we want buildings looking like those any taller, chris. ;)

As for lighting schemes, I'm perfectly happy with the way they are right now (tasteful and elegant), but I think it would be nice to see the BellSouth bring back the Olympic scheme every now and then, perhaps once a week or something.

Atlanta has one of the most attractive night skylines I've ever seen outside of New York. Maybe a little color every now and then for holidays or other special days. It is very elegant-looking. A few more tall buildings would make it better though.

I actually meant for them to be replaced with taller Builgings. They are ugly as is.

191 has recently been turning off the lighting on the top at night to save energy. They also turn off the fountain in the lower lobby in the afternoons (actually it is off all the time now since the Peachtree Center entrance is closed for renovations). It's quite sad to look up and see it all dark.

BTW, this thread was meant as a joke. I was surprised that so many took it seriously.

I knew they'd start turning them off once they started losing tenants.

someone should make a website with this name 'blingblingskyscrapers' - that would rule. lol

So am I - especially with "bling bling" (who the heck came up with that term?) in the title. But at least people offered some good suggestions about Atlanta's skyline.

1180 Peachtree is a very nice "blingy" addition to ATL's skyline.

1180 Peachtree is a very nice "blingy" addition to ATL's skyline.I drove in from dinner tonight, and 1180 was lit-up nice and bright. It looks pretty good, but you have to catch it from due north or due south for the brightest effect. The top is white (and not that cheap flourescent white of Atlantic Station or the Bellsouth towers at Lindbergh), and there's a stripe down the sides.

I'd say 1180 Peachtree makes the same statement on the skyline as BoA does, at 3/4 the hieght. But maybe I'm just excited to finally see it lighted.

Here's a pic from WSB-TV's weather cam, looking south:

I think he was joking chris.

Anyways, I doubt they'd use that name for something so formal. They'd probably use his real name, if anything.

Some nice sex jokes can be made out of it, though.

BLING BLING!

Look for a special lighting effect on the 191 Peachtree tower this Monday!

Chris121091
December 8th, 2005, 03:14 AM
Why? I thought it was virtually vacant?

AubieTurtle
December 8th, 2005, 07:19 AM
Not until next year. But being vacant has nothing to do with special lighting. Drawing attention to the building can't hurt but getting noticed certainly can help.

Chris121091
December 10th, 2005, 01:45 AM
Is it possible for a building (like 191 peachtree) to be demolished due to prolonged vacancy?

AubieTurtle
December 10th, 2005, 03:28 AM
191 is only 14 years old and is the only AA office space in the whole city. There is no way it will be torn down. I doubt the investment in the building is anywhere near paid off from just 14 years of rent. If they get desperate enough for renters, they'll do things like slash the rent, convert floors to condos (residential or business), etc.

191 will be fine. Midtown is booming now but that's already spilling over into other areas.
