The FIFA World Youth Championship is coming to Canada in 2007!

Over a three week period, a total of 52 games will take place in six cities across the country. Toronto and Edmonton have already been pre-selected as host cities, but four locations still need to be awarded.

The bid cities:

Edmonton
Hamilton
Laval
London
Montreal
Ottawa
Quebec City
Sherbrooke
Toronto
Vancouver
Victoria

Toronto and Edmonton have not been included in the poll as they are definites announced by Soccer Canada. The bids from Calgary and Winnipeg ditched out.

Right now its looking like Vancouver, Victoria, Montreal and Ottawa. If it were me I would have liked to have the 6 large metros of Canada doing this. Plus we could have an east grouping and a western grouping. That way the 3 stadia in the east would be close as would the west once making it easy for travel. Of course once you get nearer to the end this would change but that would be only for a couple teams. Now with Calgary and Winnipeg out I would like Victoria due to travel issues

For Hamilton's bid they want to make good use of McMaster Sportcomplex.

It's all part of McMaster University $30 million new sport complex. Construction starts next month and should be completed by September 2006. This was part of Hamilton's 2010 Commonwealth Games bid.

Hamilton bows out of U20 Soccer Championship

HAMILTON - Hamilton will not bid to become a host city for the 2007 under-20 soccer championship in Canada.

Tourism Hamilton executive director David Adames says a mini-feasibility study showed the tournament would not be financially beneficial to the city.

Toronto and Edmonton will provide the centerpiece venues for the tournament.

The Canadian Soccer Association will announce 4 more host cities on May 4th.

If no new stadium ends up being built in Vancouver, yet Vancouver wins a host slot, would they end up using good ol' Swangard in Burnaby? At least international visitors are always delighted when I point it out as the major soccer venue.

Maybe Swanguard, but it's quite old and small and IMO it needs a lot of improvements.

Perhaps BC Place? It would be a great pre-Olympic Games practice event for Vancouver. The stadium recently bought a FIFA approved field turf.

Why is Canada hosting it? We're gonna do so horrible...

Anyways, my vote goes to Montreal.

FIFA is really interested in us. They want to see us host the World Cup in 2018. The federal government also wants to host it.

the other FIFA event we hosted a few years back in Western Canada was a success though.

Were FIFA events held in Victoria in the past? I think I remember seeing FIFA-related events here but I could be mistaken.

a little off-topic, but i have a question. Were the Victoria 1994 Commonwealths a success and where was Commonwealth Stadium and how many seats did it have?

Koz

Huge success, although to the shock and horror of NIMBYs who fought it all the way.

The stadium was built at UVic and seats 6000.

I also answered my own question by searching around a bit. FIFA's U-19 Women's World's was co-hosted in Victoria in 2002.

The cities are:

Montreal
Ottawa
Toronto
Calgary
Edmonton
Vancouver

Each city will host a group of 4 teams.

52 matches in all.

BTW, it cost 500K to install natural grass for the two games of the ChampionsWorld series last year at the Skydome.

Montreal will be building a new soccer stadium, very little details available, minimum 10k seated.

Montreal, Laval, Quebec city and Sherbrooke.

Where will they build the new stadium in Montreal?
I'm sure it will be a success. Montreal is more a soccer city than a baseball city.
(Montreal Manic; Montreal Supra; Montreal Impact)

well i am not sure toronto is in anymore if we can't build the new stadium. There is no where else to play in the city.

Don't get me wrong, as a Canadian I'd love to see us host the world cup, but I just don't see it happening. I imagine we'd have to build 5-10 stadiums to accomodate the event, and then what? What would become of these new stadiums when finished? They would be huge white elephants that at best could be used by CFL teams ...

actually, no. very few new stadiums would be built but many would need renovations and expansions as FIFA World Cup stadiums must have at least 40,000 seats. All the stadiums are in place except Winnipeg and Halifax.

In 2000, CSA studied the economic feasibility of bidding for the FIFA World Cup 2010 tournament. It's a $1.5 billion proposition, which doesn't include the $165.5 million to renovate stadiums in nine cities. These cities are Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg (they have a new stadium btw), Ottawa, Hamilton, Toronto, Montreal, and Halifax.....and about Halifax, they're building a new 28,000 seater at $77 million for their new CFL franchise.

Offcourse Toronto will be in this. The stadium at York could still end up being built but smaller with a 20,000 seating capacity. And if that doesn't get built, I heard that they will play in the Rogers centre, which they already did, last year with exhibtional games with top teams from Europe.

Yeah, since the Argo's aren't moving into the new stadium. Is it still expandable to 80,000?

The Halifax Stadium Consortium (HSC) has committed $38.5 million for the construction of a world-class sports stadium in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

HSC is committed to bringing a professional football franchise to the Halifax Regional Municipality by 2008 and with cooperation from all levels of government, HSC believes organized professional football will kick-off with a 'blast' in the HRM by the start of the 2008 CFL season.

HSC's proposal includes 50 per cent financing of total project construction costs, up to $38.5 million. The remainder to be financed by Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments. Facility management to be negotiated.

HSC's current commitment has exceeded $150,000 in the form of preliminary site evaluation and stadium pre-design options.

The HSC group consists of investors in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario. Full details to be disclosed at a future date.

For what? The Pope? 80,000  = bad idea.

Well, does this city still have Olympic and Commonwealth ambitions?

And it's just temporarily expandable, not permanent. I believe Toronto 2008 proposed a 100,000 seat Olympic Stadium that would've been downsized to 25,000 after the Games.

What's expandable? The Roger's Centre (Skydome) has a capacity of about 50,000 for a baseball game but since this is a soccer/football game they could add for seats to it.
