Wow I have made my 1000th post - took me a while!

Anyway I thought I'd share this with the forum - my first attempt at building a city. The final result looks a little animated but it also helps to give an otherworldliness. The city is far from finished and is only just starting to take shape. I guess the idea is to get things in place then work backward and redetail everything right down to roads and lanes and building treatments. After the CBD is filled up I could move onto the surrounding suburbia which at present is empty.

I have to admit though it's pretty crap compared with some of the stuff floating around - mine lacks so much detail.

Heliconia or Helliconia is another world created by Brian Aldiss in his trilogy "Helliconia Spring, Helliconia Summer and Helliconia Winter" The world as it appears in these books is far more backward than my city - but it does include a binary sun and an amazingly detailed environment.

I have some additional views and will be adding some more later if anyone is interested.

What program did you use to create the city?

and how much was the program you used?

@ skyscraperguy

Lightwave 7.0 (rendering and modelling) $2298
Carrara Pro 4 (rendering and modelling) $599
Photoshop CS (re-finishing and presentation) $950.91
Corel Draw 12 (presentation) $800

Download some trials of the rendering packages and have a play with the programs, you might be naturally more comfortable with one of them.

If you want something eaier to use and not as full on as the big guns, I suggest programs like Carrara - professional but aimed more at video and presentation. Most of the stuff above was done in Carrara Pro 4.

You don't have to pay for software to make this kind of stuff. Check out POV-Ray, Blender (+Yafray plugin) and Wings3D if don't like to throw money out of the window. They are all 100% free. My personal opinion is that POV-Ray is the best renderer and that Wings3D is the easiest one to use.

LOL Newtek would not be pleased to hear that. It is available to students as a discounted rate in an educational version. It's any wonder why its so expensive in the western countries.

If you are willing to break the piracy laws of your country (if it has any) then it's available free.
