U.S. Census Bureau 2004 county population estimates matched against new MSA designations.
Includes Metroplitan and Micropolitan areas. Metro areas contain a centralized urban area over 50,000. Micro areas contain a centralized urban cluster of between 10,000 and 50,000.

No - b/c the county estimates are provided by the Census every year in April. When the population estimates come in then it is just a matter of plugging them into MSA / CSA definitions.
james2390 April 17th, 2005, 08:31 PM Interesting. I never noticed that Tampa was so high up.
TexasBoi April 17th, 2005, 08:54 PM Is Orlando's growth slowing down. Looks like San Antonio closed the gap. I thought Orlando was much higher than them and was widening the gap. I also thought Orlando would be over 2 million by now.
Blazer85 April 17th, 2005, 10:51 PM Anyone have a list of MSA rankings for all the cities in the US (using the 2004 estimates)?
Nick in Atlanta April 17th, 2005, 11:05 PM This list is pretty accurate, IMO. Miami-Ft.Lauderdale must also include Palm Beach County, otherwise it would be about 4 million.
That whole I-4 corridor between Tampa through Orlando to Daytona Beach is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. It's got a lot of young people that live along it, which is much different to other more older areas of Florida.
Nick in Atlanta April 17th, 2005, 11:11 PM Holy Sh!!t. I just realized that Greensboro, NC and High Point are listed as a different MSA than Winston-Salem!! A certain forumer from Winston-Salem is going to go crazy. I mean crazier!!

just curious though - why is Sandy Springs listed when it isnt incorporated?

Thanks... looks like using the CMSA numbers Birmingham is 37th. I believe in 2003, Birmingham was around 48th in MSAs, so I was wondering wonder how much Birmingham moved up in the rankings (if at all) since our MSA grew from 2003 to 2004, but apparently we didnt move up.
teshadoh April 18th, 2005, 01:39 AM LOL!

The Office of Budget & Management counts census designated areas.
Also note concerning the MSA & CSA lists - I have neglected to update them from the November 2004 listing, mine are from the original 2003 criteria. For example, Greenville & Spartanburg are again merged, at least as a consolidated metro.
marathon April 18th, 2005, 01:42 AM Shouldn't census statistics use defined census divisions?
IOW, where is Washington and Baltimore?
NovaWolverine April 18th, 2005, 02:05 AM The DC-Balt. area is considered northeast.
marathon April 18th, 2005, 02:12 AM The DC-Balt. area is considered northeast.
That's some trick, when the Census Bureau considers Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia as part of the South...
NovaWolverine April 18th, 2005, 02:18 AM Actually it's south by the census, South Atlantic more specifically, but on here, I consider it geographically the south, but I like Mid-Atlantic the best. Geographically DC, N. VA is the center of the eastern seaboard.
Nick in Atlanta April 18th, 2005, 04:39 AM LOL!

They seem to just list two random areas in metro Atlanta besides the City of Atlanta. My best guess as to why they chose Sandy Springs and the City of Marietta is because they have a large population. The city of Marietta is about 50,000 and Sandy Springs (which will probably become an incorporated city this year) has a population of 85,000. Don't ask me why they didn't list the City of Decatur, which also has a sizeable population.
teshadoh April 18th, 2005, 02:06 PM ^ Because Sandy Springs is regarded as a satelitte city & not just a suburb. This merely indicates the splintering of Atlanta's metro, similar to nationwide patterns - it is not primary city based as it once was.

I bet Austin will pass up San Antonio... Because, the only reason SA passed up Dallas in city population is because they annexed. Which is weird, because when you reach the city limits of San Antonio, I-10 is still a 4-lane "road" with a grass median. There really nothing till you reach Houston St., unless you count the gas stations that appear every so often. But I bet Austin will pass up SA's metro later on down the line.
teshadoh April 18th, 2005, 03:59 PM FYI - the MSA / CSA definitions were updated last year, so it's possible there are some errors.
teshadoh April 18th, 2005, 08:18 PM I updated the metro areas - so feel free to view them now.
Additionally, here is a quick map of population growth from 2003 to 2004 for southeastern counties (sorry the map is so big - but how else are you goint to view it?):

teshadoh April 18th, 2005, 08:57 PM Additionally - I am adding a ranking of metro / micro / consolidated areas as well. Please consider that these metro areas are based on their spatial location - that is, if they overlap over any southern state, they are included. If you don't like it - make your own list :)

Nick in Atlanta April 18th, 2005, 10:06 PM that map is very cool, brad. i must say that its sad to see union county be killed by total sprawl. its also intersting to see south atlanta counties grow.
Yup, Henry and Walton(I think) to the southeast of Atlanta, Paulding to the west and of course Forsyth to the north. Carrol county, just south of I-20, on the Alabama border will be the next fast growing county, because a developer announced a few weeks ago a project to build a little subdivision with 18,000 houses in it. :eek2:
Style™ April 18th, 2005, 10:08 PM 18,000 ?! what! that's a city. not a 'subdivison' ! i'd be funny if there was on access road on all of that. i'd laugh. though , that wont happen... i'd still be funny to see momey sit in her denali.
Nick in Atlanta April 18th, 2005, 10:21 PM Brad, are you going to be doing your own census in 2010?
teshadoh April 18th, 2005, 10:26 PM Heh, I appreciate it Nick - but all I'm doing is plugging census data into GIS software. If it's in a usable format, it's pretty easy from there. But I actually worked for the census before - in 1990.
astro April 19th, 2005, 12:30 AM Thanks for all the information Brad. Very interesting. :okay:

I really don't get this map b/c the one before it shows that just about every county surrounding Louisville is growing at a fast enough pace that's they're high lighted in yellow (which is one of the most colored metro's on that map) so why on this one it's only highlighted in lightgreen, when the only 2 counties in Nashville are are highlighted in yellow on the first map but they're entire metro is highlighted in yellow.
teshadoh September 21st, 2005, 11:04 PM ^ Not a bad question, at least much nicer in tone than some folks at SSP, thanks :)
Because those two counties in Nashville MSA/CSA are very popolous, so a high growth rate for those equates to a large population. Those KY & IN counties are generally low in population, so the additional population is minimal. Also, non-popolous counties, despite their growth rate, will be overwhelmed by the more popolous counties, with often a lower growth rate.
louisville playa September 21st, 2005, 11:08 PM So do you know how many people live in those Nashville counties?
teshadoh September 21st, 2005, 11:15 PM ^ Yeah, I would have had to - I used the Census estimates to summarize the metro population.
tayfromnc September 21st, 2005, 11:45 PM That's why I'm talking about look at the Raleigh/Durham Metro, and Wilmington. Take that. North Carolina is that state. Weve got it all. Fast Growing Cities, The Beaches and the Mountains. I don't think I'll ever move away. What for? That's why half my neighbors are from newyork or philly or boston. They have seen the light. :)
ROCguy September 22nd, 2005, 12:24 AM Raleigh-Cary, what the hell is that? Isn't it Raleigh-Durham? Durham has it's own Metro area now? That's ridiculous. I hate The Triangle more anyone else, but that is a very low estimate for Raleigh.
ralex231 September 22nd, 2005, 01:09 AM ^^ lol i was just thinking the exact same thing
rocket9561 September 22nd, 2005, 01:38 AM So do you know how many people live in those Nashville counties?
Rutherford County has a population of 210,025 and is growing at 15.4%
Williamson has a population of 146,935 and is growing at 16.0%
Sumner has a population of 141,611 and is growing at 8.6%
Wilson has a population of 97,891 and is growing at 10.2%
Nashville has a few very populous counties that are posting high growth rates and therefore the MSA is growing very quickly even if the individual county totals don't look as good. Louisville's suburban counties are much smaller than Nashville's.
TexasBoi September 22nd, 2005, 02:12 AM Looking at those numbers thebrad posted a couple months ago which i just stared at for a good 5 minutes lol. You can see huge gaps between the cities
1. DC
2. Dallas
3. Miami
4. Houston
5. Atlanta
6-22. Tampa to Richmond
I believe Dallas could possible pull away from Miami, Houston and Atlanta.
teshadoh September 22nd, 2005, 03:14 AM ^ I have some seen some 20 - 30 year estimates which Dallas - Ft Worth pulls out ahead of Houston considerably.

Isn't the actual county that Nashville is in, Davidson, actually going down in population? Pretty sure that is what the 03 and 04 estimates show.

Nashville/Davidson County is estimated by the census to have posted <1% growth between 2000 and 2004. The City contests this estimate based on their own figures. It is highly unlikely Nashville went from a 12% growth rate between 1990 and 2000 to such a slow one now. During the 90s, the census also predicted Nashville/Davidson to lose population and it did not.

Hey Brad..if you get time, I'd love to see some of the above estimates you mentioned. I know too many friends/family from Houston that steadfastly refuse to believe that the DFW metro area is a bit larger and growing faster every year.

I seen those same estimates that he is talking about. I'll try to find them but I remember seeing DFW close to 10 million and Houston just over 7.

You really think Austin will become larger then San Antonio? I mean just like stated I think back on first page people thought Orlando was gonna pull far ahead of San Antonio and look at it now. Its hard to predict what will happen, Austin is in a kind of boom right now. But sometime that will come to an end. As to your comments the land we annexed was mostly Rural "85%". I think we only added at most 75,000 "if that" to population, if you like ill dig up the figures.
