LEAFS FANATIC June 6th, 2006, 05:40 PM I am bringing this thread to life again as I will be visiting Paros this summer. I have been there once before and enjoyed its many golden sandy-brown beaches very much!
PAROS:
The central island of Paros, lying some 8 km west of Naxos, is occupied by a range of hills of gently rounded contours, rising to 764 m in Mount Profitis Ilias (rewarding climb, with guide; magnificent panoramic views). Three bays cut deep inland - in the west the sheltered Paroikia Bay, with the island's capital that serves as the main sailing port and as a yacht charter base; in the north the bay which shelters the little town of Naoussa, which in Roman times was the island's main port for the shipment of Lychnites marble; and in the east the flat Marmara bay. The whole island is covered with a layer of coarse-grained crystalline limestone, in which lie rich beds of pure marble.
The island's considerable prosperity has depended since ancient times on agriculture, favoured by fertile soil and an abundance of water, and on the working on marble, which is still quarried on a small scale. In recent years the rapid development of the tourist trade has brought changes in the landscape, the island's economy and its social structure.
History
Excavations have yielded evidence of settlement in the Late Neolithic period (5th-4th millennium BCE). The island, which has preserved its ancient name, was already well populated in the age of the Cycladic culture (3rd millennium BCE). In the 1st millennium BCE the Ionian Greeks settled on Paros and made it a considerable sea-power, minting its own coins; in the 7th c. BCE Paros founded colonies on Thasos and in Thrace. In the 6th and 5th c. BCE Paros was celebrated for its school of sculptures. It was a member of the first Attic maritime league, and its unusually large contributions to the league (30 talents in 425 BCD) are evidence of the island's wealth in the 5th c. BCE.
In Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times Paros was not of great importance. In the 9th c. it was depopulated as a result of raids by Arab pirates, plundering and burning. From 1207 to 1399 it belonged to the Duchy of Naxos, and thereafter was ruled by various dynasties until its capture by the Turks in 1537. It was reunited with Greece in the 19th c. after the foundation of the new Greek kingdom.

Parikia -- Frankish Castle (Built in 1200s)
Thalassa May 29th, 2009, 01:04 AM Lefkes, Paros
One of the loveliest villages of Paros, Lefkes is situated in the central part of Paros, 11 kilometres south-east of Parikia.
Lefkes has 500 inhabitants and is built at an altitude of 300 metres above the sea level, on a verdant hill covered with olive trees and pine trees and offers a breathtaking view of Naxos Island.
This beautiful village used to be Paros’ capital during the Middle-Ages and is full of little traditional whitewashed houses, mixed with Venetian architecture, wonderful churches dating from the 15th century, whitewashed windmills and beautiful dovecotes.
The charm and the beauty of Lefkes are still untouched by mass tourism, which help it maintain its authenticity.
The Church of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) is the village’s main church; it is a beautiful Byzantine church made of fine white marble, glimmering under the sun; rare and valuable Byzantine icons are housed in this church and are very worth-seeing.
In Lefkes are also a Folk Art Museum which exhibits various local tools and clothing and a Museum of Aegean Folk.
From this marvelous village, the “Byzantine Road”, a paved footpath dating from the Byzantine period, leads to the village of Prodromos and finishes down to the sea.

Thalassa May 29th, 2009, 02:39 AM Naoussa, Paros
The beautiful picturesque fishing village of Naoussa is located in a huge bay in the northern part of Paros, 10 kilometres east from the capital, Parikia.
Naoussa is considered to be one of the prettiest villages in the Cyclades and, despite the development of tourism, this lovely village has managed to keep its authenticity, its character and its charm, with its whitewashed and flowered little houses and its tiny whitewashed churches and chapels, surrounded by labyrinth-like narrow, stone-paved streets.
The lovely village of Naoussa is built amphitheatrically around a tiny picturesque port where little colorful fishing boats called caiques are mooring and where remains of a Venetian castle can still be seen, creating a particular and enchanting atmosphere.
Little taverns and ouzeries are boarding the port, creating a friendly and traditional atmosphere. Even if Naoussa is much quitter than Parikia, it also offers animated bars and night-clubs, opened until dawn.
Naoussa, Paros is also famous for its numerous beautiful golden beaches, filling the huge bay of Naoussa, such as Kolymbithres Beach, Agios Ioannis, Agioi Anargyroi, Monastiri and much more.
Naoussa also has many beautiful churches to visit such as its main church, Kimissis tis Theotokou (the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin) which is located on the highest spot of the village or the Church of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) in which is housed an interesting Byzantine Museum exposing fine and valuable 13th century icons.

Thalassa May 29th, 2009, 03:23 PM Piso Livadi, Paros
The small fishing port of Piso Livadi is located a couple of kilometres south of Marpissa and 19 kilometres south-east of Parikia.
Piso Livadi used to be a calm little village but it has been transformed and intensely developed in order to attract tourists.
This important holiday resort has many restaurants and cafes located on the waterfront and a few rentals; it is famous for its fine Greek cuisine.
From this little port, daily trips for Naxos, Ios, Santorini and Amorgos are organized regularly.
South of Piso Livadi one can found many superb beaches as the Golden Beach, considered as one of the best spots in the Mediterranean for slalom windsurfing.
The big religious festivity of this little resort is the celebration of the Ascension Day, during which many happenings are organized and sea food and wine are served to the participants.

The beach of Kolimbithres is one of the most famous beaches of Paros and is located in the huge bay of Naoussa, or Plastira Bay.
This beach is particularly impressive because of the huge blocks of granite boarding it, sculpted into strange smooth shapes by the sea and the wind over the centuries.
Small sandy coves are lining one after another, constituting the beach of Kolimbithres. Sun beds and umbrellas can be hired in some of the beaches and some water sports facilities are even available.
A few beach bars and taverns can be find along the road leading to the beach.

Thalassa May 29th, 2009, 07:08 PM EngineerGreece, no, I'm afraid not. I have been worked to death for the past few years. I only get 10 days vacation a year. I am a Construction Manager for a Japanese construction company. I mainly focus on interiors - banks, restaurants, retail, etc. That is one of the reasons I was attracted to this forum. There are many days I want to pull my hair out but once the job is completed and the ribbon is cut, I forget the aggravation. Then I start the whole thing all over again. :)
I am still counting on winning the lottery or having someone leave me everything in their will so I can retire
EngineerGreece May 29th, 2009, 11:13 PM Oh I see... I study Electrical Engineering and I love skyscrapers that's why I was attracted to this forum. :D Not many projects though... :(
Anyway I like your photos a lot... Good job
