Located in the region of Middle Black Sea, Amasya is founded on the slopes of Mt. Harşena in Yeşilırmak Valley. With its over 7000 year historical background it became a capital of a kingdom, trained scientists, artists, poets, and became a training city for sultan's sons. First steps of the Independence War of Turkey also took place in Amasya. Along with these historical and cultural riches , Amasya especially takes attention with Yalıboyu houses constructed along the shore of Yeşilırmak . If you want to see a fascinating antic city where history and nature mingles and where you can see the best marble apples, cherries, peaches and okras of the world, Amasya is waiting for you with its cosy and hospitable people.

the architecture is totally Ottoman/Turkish architecture; white houses with oval brown, wooden, bay windows... you can see this style of architecture only in Turkish cities and Balkans. but of course you can see western influnce everywhere in Turkey and its architecture.
museum artifacts are Roman but mostly part of other Anatolian civilizations too.

by the way great pictures Allan looks like very liveable and peaceful place.

Whoa thanks, excellent thread. Amasya was once the ancient captial of Pontus, no ? The ruins are hellenistic and Pontic I think, Pontic Kings were buried in it, I'm not sure.

HISTORY

Amasya was probably founded by the Hittites, dating possibly back to the 2nd millennium BCE.

333 BC: Comes under control of Alexander the Great.
302 BC: With the formation of the Pontic kingdom, Amaseia becomes its capital.
183 BC: Sinop is conquered by the Pontic kingdom, and becomes the new capital. Amaseia continues to be an important city.
65 BC: Is absorbed by Rome, which makes it a free city and the administrative centre of a large region.
2nd century CE: Is appointed "metropolis" and "first city".
1071: Falls to Seljuqs Turks, who lets the city continue to prosper.
1413: Becomes part of the expanding Ottoman Empire. Amasya becomes a training place for future sultans, who would serve as governors of Amasya.
1939: Heavy earthquake destroys large parts of town
