How pretty! Looks much like Turku with the exception that many beauties in Turku were demolished in the 60s and 70s, so I think Uppsala has more oldies to offer. How large is the population of Uppsala? I've had the impression that it is a very dense town, yet not very large. I know it is pretty near Sthlm, so I guess it must gain population much the same way as Sthlm. I hope it does't grow much bigger than that; it really looks best as it is. :)

This is my favorite.

Uppsala is no exception, a lot of nice old houses were demolished in the 60-70s but thankfully they couldn't destroy everything since it was a great part of our cultural history and people didn't let them. But its still going on, some month ago they destroyed some 19-century houses just to make room for a new highrise building (musikens hus).

The county got 185 000 inhabitians so i guess the city got about 150 000 inhabitians, since there aren't any towns in the county except of Uppsala, only fields and forests. The town is 68 km northwest of Stockholm

Turku/Åbo and Uppsala strongly resemble each other !

Gustavianum, the oldest university building that's left, from the early 16th century. Today its a museums where you can spot old egyptian,greek and roman remainings and even mumies. At the top , one of three oldest anatomic theatre in the world, they say. The two others are/was located in Italy.

Before the mid 17th century a Swedish "capital" didn´t exist. The king took his court and moved across castles and towns in the country where they resided for a couple of months before they moved to the next place. Uppsala has always been an important city, yes, but Stockholm has always been the one and only "true" capital in Sweden.

Nice pics! Looks very clean and neat and there`s quite much greenery between buildings. But in first pic I don`t like residential buildings: they look so dull.

I know what you mean. It´s hard to believe it really is so big. Until 1970 Norrköping was the fourth city of Sweden when first Uppsala and then Linköping (quelle horreur, the rivalling neighbour city became bigger!) went ahead and Norrköping declined. It has been a little halt in the way expansion though: In 2003, Knivsta became an own municipality and took 12000 citizens of Uppsala kommun with them. In the city of Uppsala, there are around 130000 inhabitants and around 170000 in the whole municipality. Anyways, in whatever way you count, it is still the fourth city of Sweden.

About a billion years ago I spent two cold weeks in spring in Uppsala. Actually it was March of 1982.

I was visiting a girl that was from Ostersund but attending school in Uppsala.

I met her the year before when she was an au pair in New York City where I lived.

A couple things struck me when I visited her...one was how much bicycles were used there. When I visited her in March it was still snowing and there was plenty on the ground yet the bicycle racks at the local train station and around town were constantly packed.

Another was the television programming, when I was there in "82" there were but two television stations and they came on about 4pm and were off by midnight. The most explicit program was the American show "Little House on the Prairie". Did/does Sweden have cultural tariffs?

The other was the paucity of radio stations playing "rock and roll". I think I had to listen to "Radio Luxemburg" in order to hear anything from that decade.

I should imagine with satellite television and the internet things have changed there quite a bit since.

Yet another interesting experience was how many offers of marriage I received. I later came to find out that getting a visa for the US is sometimes difficult and so you do what you have to circumvent this hindrance.

I think the Swedish people I met while I was there found me amusing in a loud and silly way. Most of the college kids (my age at the time) I met seemed stoic and more mature then me and my American counterparts.

Oh...and I think "hooking up" was invented by the Swedes. ;)

Holy crap, yes. That would be a very rare scene over here in the US.


We also have what is known as the "designated driver" which refers to a person whose duty it is to stay sober and act as chauffeur when clubbing. How does it work over there...do you have to use a bicycle built for two? ;)

Seriously though, that's great that you use the bicycle as much as you do over there...Sweden probably doesn't have the problem with overweight citizens like we do here in the US.

lol, atleast in Norway, drunk bicycling is allowed. Driving a motorized wheelchair while beeing drunk is not, however.

About your observations from the 80'ies, it was pretty much the same here in neighbouring Norway. I grew up then with only one TV channel, and "Life of Brian" was banned from my country back then:lol: Things have changed ALOT;)
