India rejects HIV infection claim

BBC News, Delhi

It is claimed that Aids is chiefly spread among sex workers
The Indian government has dismissed a claim by an Aids expert that the country now has the most HIV-positive patients in the world.
The claim was made by Richard Feachem of the Global Fund to Fight Aids. He says figures showing India having fewer cases than South Africa are wrong.

The UN says South Africa has 5.3 million people infected with the HIV/Aids virus.

The government in Delhi says there are 5.1 million cases in India.

However, independent experts say the number of people infected in India could be anywhere between 2.5 million to 8.5 million - because of the lack of reliable data here in relation to the HIV pandemic.

HIV/Aids is a serious problem [in India]. We are aware of the gravity of the situation and we have programmes to deal with it

SY Qureshi, National Aids Control Organisation

India's government-controlled National Aids Control Organisation (Naco) chief SY Qureshi told the BBC that Mr Feachem's claim was "nonsense".

"Our [Aids] surveillance systems are certified by the World Health Organisation, UN agency UNAids and the Indian Council of Medical Research [ICMR].

"We stand by our figure of 5.1 million [infections]," Mr Qureshi said.

'Epidemic'

Mr Feachem, who is the executive director of Global Fund to Fight Aids, said in Paris on Tuesday that the epidemic in India was spreading rapidly and that nothing was being done to stop it.

Mr Qureshi strongly rejected his comments.

"HIV/Aids is a serious problem [in India]. We are aware of the gravity of the situation and we have programmes to deal with it," he said.

But Indian and international groups working to prevent HIV/Aids have questioned the official figure of India having 5.1 million infections.

Anjali Gopalan of the Naz Foundation, an non-government organisation working with HIV-infected people, said official figures did not look reliable.

"We have seen the numbers of the infected grow rapidly. Each and every confirmed case hides at least two more. This means the number of infected could be as high as 15 million," she said.

The Global Fund to Fight Aids has committed more than three billion dollars to 300 programmes in 127 countries for combating HIV/Aids, TB and malaria.

The worst thing you can do is to act in denial.

If I was in the Indian Government, I would use the claims as the means to kick the Indian people up the arse and really push a huge save sex campaign and get the funds to do it from the ministry of Finance.

my reserach in 2000 put the figure at a conservative 4.8million..therefore in the space of 5 years the count could easily be up in the 7-8 million mark...nothing has been done in india since the WHO highlighted the problem there in the late 1990's its terribel..almost as bad as sub saharan africa.

Don't you worry. Innocent people still get murdered by policemen in the London tube. Shame that it's never like a right-wing American 'politician' to be the one who gets shot in the head in a London metropolitan train wagon.

well HIV is a serious issue in India indeed, and denying is certainly not the way forward. While it is necessary to discuss the topic .. how can such comments such as these help ? This is not the first time I have seen rude stereotypical comments from you..

..and btw it is this very poor income class of the Indian populace like the snake charmers, who have a long way to go in understanding the implications of getting infected.

If you are suggesting that 4-5 million Indians who are infecteced ( ranging from upper class to poorer classes ) all turn to snake charming.. the Indian economy would take a beating.

I think it would be a better idea for even the snake charming class to get educated and get better jobs and move on in life..( rich enough to buy silk pants  ) After all even George Bush sees benefit in an economically strong India.. looking by it, the news still hasn't filtered through the ranks in America

I think you find the HIV epidemic stems from the prostitution that has existed in India, but also denied by the government 20 years ago. Bombay has a least 100,000 prostitutes (or cage girls) which accounts for approx 1% of women population.

Right wing politicians are too afraid and too stupid to go abroad is more like it. They only travel to Atlanta to shag a thirteen year old

^^ I am almost 99 percent sure that Atlanta was a blue city. And the ones who are getting at these girls are travellers from Atlanta's airport--the busiest in the world I might add. Probally some of them were Dutchmen, Brits, and atheists. :)

Ah poor you. The Dutch actually first have sex at a very late stage. Teenage pregnancy hardly ever occurs. We're not a sexually frustrated country like The USA. And please think before you reply. People IN Atlanta don't need to visit their city by air. You type too much and think too little.
