My mum's nickname for Sydney was Sickney. I went down about 6 times in 2 years and nearly every time I came back sick with the flu and had to take time off work. I was working for my parents at the time.

Melbourne is known as 'The City By The Bay' . The weather dude on channel 10 evening news says it everyday as part of his presentation.

'World's Most Livable City' is a bit pretentious but i guess Melbourne's won those world surveys about 10 times since the early 90's so who knows it may stick.

Cheers

* Hamilton, New Zealand
o Hamiltron

From Wikipedia: It is now popularly referred to as "Hamiltron, City of the Future," in an ironic stab at the city's reputation as being a "cow town".
I don't get it??

Townsville's nicknames: Twin Cities, Mt Isa by the Sea, Brownsville. Thankfully we've just about overcome the stigma of the last two.

* Brisbane
o Brisvegas (a play on Las Vegas, Nevada)

Why?

* Melbourne
o The World's Most Livable City
o Paris on the Yarra

You may well agree with these but they're not nicknames, no one refers to the city as such.

* Sydney
o Emerald City

???

o Brisvegas (a play on Las Vegas, Nevada)

Why?

Something to do with when the U.S Soldiers were here during the war... And party town... or something. lol. It does have meaning.

Heres another reason... (I Stills stand by the US Soldiers thing. I saw it on tv)

Edit:
Bris Vegas was originally a derogatory term employed by southern-Australians, in particular, to deride the apparent tackiness and unsophisticatedness of the northern city of Brisbane, Queensland. Though it is still used in this sense, more recently, however, the term has been adopted by Brisbanites as an endearing soubriquet for the city in which they reside. In this later sense, the term represents Brisbane’s new-found vibrancy and active night-life as it continues to absorb migrants, both inter-state and foreign, exponentially as Australia’s fastest growing capital.

* Melbourne
o The World's Most Livable City
o Paris on the Yarra

Probably because it was voted one of/the worlds livable cities.
And its also the most European city... Hence remark to Paris

Emerald City:

I think this referes to Sydney's status as Australia's gay capital. The Emerald City was the city depicted in the movie the Wizard of Oz. This movie has gay iconic status being that the character of "Dorothy" who was played by Judy Garland was and still is a gay icon.

I may be wrong but that is how I have always seen it - at least since mardigras 2001.

lol nice one Jayt but nothing to do with it.

Seattle and Sydney both share this title and it references back to the film 'The Wizard of Oz' and to the city of Oz in particular (how natuarally beautiful and spectacular both cities are). When David Williamson wrote the play 'Emerald City' it cemented the term for Sydney and here we are today.

Oh OK. I just remember that in the 2001 G & L mardigras there was a float depicting the Wizard Of Oz and Emerald City (being Sydney). It was all very camp with the charater dorothy played by a drag queen.

Also - how about 'Sin City' for Sydney. I think it was a term used long ago - not sure about now though.

Na honestly man it's been Rotovegas for about 10 years. They even say it on TV and stuff. It's because the main road Fenton Street has so many neon signs from all the budget motels. It's a joke of course.

Perth used to be called 'city of light' during the early days of the first nasa manned orbital missions. I think these days a lot of the locals call it 'dullsville!' Seems to be going through a servere conservative period. Pity....loads of potential but zero politicians who have any vision and wouldn't know anything about how to make a lively city and interesting, the best they have come up with is a bell tower!

The thing about world's most liveable city titles is that there are so many of them from so many organisations. They do mean something, the cities that get these titles are likely to be near the top of the bunch. I wouldn't go preaching about them though, makes you sound like you're trying hard to prove something.
