I don't know...I could name a half dozen that should be on there and aren't. I told Dave before he posted it...that list is not very good.

for one thing, i dont think this is listed in order from best down. it is just all 100 best albums in no order.

second, i dont understand why coldplay's album "parachutes" is on the list. Shouldn't "a rush of blood to the head" be on there? a rush... was far better. i havent heard all of the songs from parachutes.... but it didnt sound like anything special.

hmmmmm not sure.. I can't even believe Duran Duran are on there for Rio, The Jam and Robbie Williams being on there just makes a mockery of it really. Also quite surprised they put George Michael's Faith on there instead of Listen Without Predjudice which was a zillion times better in every way.

Oh well...one mans jewels are another mans rubbish.

RADIOHEAD - OK Computer
Most overrated album EVER.

Sgt Peppers, Revolver and the White Album should have been the top 3.

lol! Nobody could ever agree with these lists - can't you all marvel in the quality that is present rather than dwelling on that which isn't?!

ALANIS MORISSETTE, COLDPLAY, DURAN DURAN, SEX PISTOLS, BLUR, MEAT LOAF, THE PRODIGY, THE LIBERTINES, HAPPY MONDAYS, DIDO, OUTKAST, MASSIVE ATTACK, EMINEM, GEORGE MICHAEL, ROBBIE WILLIAMS, MOBY, THE STREETS and ROD STEWART???

that list is a joke to anyone who's serious about music. it is compiled by people who have a biased love for a certain artist (ie, robbie williams) but don't know jack shit about music as a whole. so many great albums missing from that list it's scary (and quite sad). so much greater stuff out there if only people would find the time to go looking and not just lazily rely on what the radio or TV force feeds down their lug'holes!!

dinp
April 21st, 2005, 04:07 PM
I agree that Alanis Morissette should be on there, its a quality album, nothing she's done since has beaten it.

I would have expected 'The Colour and the Shape' from Foo Fighters to be on there, and the other Coldplay album. Parachutes was ok, but not their best of the two.

There were only 125 nominations. Silly really.

Hmm... Marvin Gaye's 'Whats going on' is a classic no doubt about it but his later albums 'Lets Get it On' and 'Here my dear' are better in my opinion. The last track on 'Lets Get it On': 'Just to keep you satisfied' is the best thing Gaye ever did. Its spine tinglingly good and it stops you dead in your tracks. An ode to a crumbling / failed marriage and cowritten by his estranged wife. What its doing on a record devoted to sex is anyones guess but it is a sublime moment.

Radiohead's OK Computer is genuis though.

i'm happy to accept people will have differing opinions as far as their view of quality music is concerned, which is why i rarely comment in these threads even when the likes of robbie williams or oasis are mentioned in the context of 'greatness', but i always have trouble believing so many people apparently adore U2.

what is wrong with you bloody people?

i'm shocked that ooberman didn't get into the top twenty.

on a slightly less sarcastic note... people (and who, exactly? were you offered a chance to vote in this?) were given 125 albums to choose from, and one of them was by the bloody scissor sisters. pet sounds is number one for me, no doubt about it.

when they do these "greatest of all time" lists then they shouldnt allow anything that is less than say 10 or 20 years old... obviously it has to be in proportion to the time span of the medium being judged. There may be some great newer stuff but by the nature of the 'greatest of all time' title it has to have at least stood the test of time

cheers Blunther, I missed that when I scanned the listt.

My favourate song from Simon and Garfunkle is "Homeward bound" - it really sums up that feeling of looking forward to going home.

I ignored this thread at first, but I've just gotten around to watching the full programme. I picked OK Computer as my best album, but never imagined it would be the viewer's choice.

Being the unfashionable geek I am I was surprised to find I have twelve of the 100:

RADIOHEAD - OK Computer
GUNS N' ROSES - Appetite For Destruction
R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
COLDPLAY - Parachutes
ALANIS MORISSETTE - Jagged Little Pill
THE VERVE - Urban Hymns
RADIOHEAD - The Bends
THE WHITE STRIPES - Elephant
DIRE STRAITS - Brothers in Arms
GEORGE MICHAEL - Faith
MEAT LOAF - Bat Out of Hell
THE STROKES - Is this It

Out of the other 88, are there any I should be rushing straight out to buy...?

...and if you look at the page for Grace, "People Who Bought This Title Also Bought: COLDAPLAY - PARACHUTES, NICK DRAKE - FIVE LEAVES LEFT, JONI MITCHELL - BLUE, RADIOHEAD - OK COMPUTER, AIR - MOON SAFARI".

Heh heh heh.

excellent self-talking-to skills, wakefield boy. give nevermind a miss for the time being, and go straight to doolittle. you also need to get pet sounds.

OK Computer is a good record, but number one?! I have all (but one) of their albums, but frankly I think they're overrated.

As for the Bends, I suppose it belongs in the top 100, but to me it sounds like Thom ripped off Jeff Buckley. Bends did come out a year after Grace.

Nevermind's reputation is a bit overinflated, not exactly groundbreaking when comapred to alot of indie bands from the late 80's. In my opinion, In Utero, their 1993 album, is ten times better.

May 8th, 2005, 03:07 AM
thank fuck there is no cliff richard up there, he is neither musical or talented. hes famous for being a christian and thats a shit reason to be famous.i cant believe charlie... or anyone has never heard nevermind, its the defining album of our generation (or am i just making sweeping assumptions about the generations of people on this website)

was actually happy to see radiohead doing so well, they are the most original band since pink floyd, and its good to see them appreciated.

As for what was missing:

iron maiden
Carlos santana
eric clapton?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

maybe not the best compiled list, but not far off

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn also. :)

I don't understand how Automatic For The People is way up there. R.E.M. have made much better albums (Murmur may actually be the greatest album ever released).

Joy Division and the Pixies albums are two that everyone should own. So raw, emotional, fantastic lyrics and from the heart...and have great tracks for dancing too.

I agree with Dinp, the Foo Fighters Colour and the Shape should be there. Janis Joplin too.....

Actually when you put it like that youre right. He is a talentless cunt who wants shooting.

The Pixies were better than Nirvana. Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim are almost as good as Dolittle and a fair bit better than Nevermind. Nevermind is good though.

nevermind is a huge album, its the album of the nighties. I don't know anyone who listens to rock music in there 20's that hasnt been influenced by this album, granted you get bored of it after a few years, but you cant underestimate its impact.

Whilst i agree that musically pixies are far better, they're just not as famous, or significant.
