Global Released what they say is a rendering of what they say the logo looks like. I was unable to obtain there rendering so I created my own based on what I saw.

The VAN-OC say's you will be wowed by the emblem if the new logo looks anything like that I wont be wowed. The Global rendering looked like "ass" IMO.

I still don't get this, it would work for Olympiad 3534 in Iqualuit, but not for Vancouver.

Illanaaq the Inukshuk was unveiled Saturday night as the logo of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Illanaaq is Inuit for "friend," while an inukshuk is a traditional stone marker used by the Inuit to guide their way across the sometimes featureless Arctic.

"It is amazing to see our logo larger than life," said Elena Rivera MacGregor Saturday night after the logo was unveiled.

Theodora Mantzaris, who also designed the logo for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, explained why the design resonated for her.

"You see I'm Greek, I was seeing it (an inukshuk) for the first time and I felt somebody welcoming me. So I thought it was a strong emblem," said the judge.

"Something that appeals to young people and you know, I think there's a bit of our personality, the Canadian personality in it, saying, 'Here: This way to the podium, this was to the finish line'," said judge Steve Mykolyn.

"After a lot of research, it was the only item that represented culture, the environment, people, Canada," Rivera MacGregor said.

The competition began last June. After reviewing 1,600 entries from across Canada, the international panel of nine judges chose the design by Vancouverite MacGregor -- who was rewarded with $25,000, two tickets to the opening ceremonies of the Games and the first two pins based on the design.

Business implications

The choosing of a logo is considered a gamble, with the outcome having a potential business impact of millions of dollars.

While the five Olympic rings are one of the most internationally recognized symbols, individual Games emblems have been around for nearly 80 years.

Wei Yew, an Edmonton graphic designer and one of the judges who chose the Vancouver logo, said one of the first recognizable emblems was created for the 1928 Winter Olympics at St. Moritz, Switzerland.

The design consisted of the Swiss and Olympic flags with a mountain in the background.

"At the time it was more of a recognition element of the Games," Yew, author of the book The Olympic Image -- The First 100 Years, told The Canadian Press.

Decades later, the commercial potential of the Games logo became evident at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics when it began appearing on pins, pennants and clothing.

The logo consisted of the Olympic rings superimposed on the emblem of the Japanese national flag, representing the rising sun.

"They started to sell well and people started to collect them," said Yew.

The logo also generates profits through merchandising. Companies such as Bell Canada, Royal Bank and the Bay -- who pay to be official Games sponsors -- earn the right to use the symbol.

"For emerging subgroups within the Olympic Games, logos are extremely important for sales and manufacturing for clothes, posters, pins, you name it," said Kevin Wamsley, director of the International Centre for Olympic Studies at the University of Western Ontario.

I agree, i also don't like it but i think we'll all grow into liking it. One thing that is good about this is that there' so much meaning to this logo.

At first I didn't like the logo but it has grown on me. It has alot of symbolism, they are found all over Canada and are important symbol of the northern people. The logo is a perfect mach to the Inukshuk in Vancouvers English Bay which is now an instant major Vancouver land mark, after the games tourists will seek it out.

It might now be what I expected but if you look at past offical olympic emblems Vancouver's is one of the best.

BTW Some how I was sitting in the VIP section and met the mayor of Vancouver, Gordon Campbell, Jack Poole and Jim Pattison, it was very cool.

Like someone else said, it just looks like a stupid obese man. No one outside Canada will know it's related to the Inuit people (who, BTW do not reside in the province of BC)... to other people it'll just look like a retarded fat person!

I like Torino's better too, but it symbolis nothing. I think it could have been better but if you look back on past logo's its definatly not the worst.

The 2010 Olympics emblem is named Ilanaaq, the Inuit word for friend.

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Officially, the emblem for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics symbolizes hope, friendship and hospitality. Unofficially, it hints at Canada's favorite sport — hockey.

The design, representing a traditional Inuit directional landmark, or inukshuk, was unveiled Saturday in front of about 10,000 at GM Place. At first glance, it resembles a hockey goalie.

The emblem is named Ilanaaq, the Inuit word for friend. It features five stone-like formations in green, red, gold and two shades of blue.

Rivera Design Group of Vancouver submitted the design, chosen by an international judging panel from more than 1,600 entries. The design team's prizes include $25,000.

Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, said, "I loved it immediately. I smiled when I saw it.

"It reminds me of a hockey goalie."

The inukshuk at English Bay was built for Expo '86. It isn't much of a landmark.

I was just wondering.. Since the Inukshuk is a Canadian Symbol, you know how many people around the world will have no Idea what it is? I mean it looks like a Person! With the mouth and all! Also, the Olympics are a world wide event, I thought they werent aloud Choosing a national symbol for the Emblem.

Hello everybody from Italy! :)

I'm a student of graphic design and honestly I don't like this new emblem...I mean, the concept behind the logo is very representative of Canada, instead of a banal maple leaf...But it's hard to understand it for a stranger who looks at the logo...And above all I think it's too much colored for a WOG logo...looks more like to a Summer Games logo.

Somehow or other I think it will grow on us...(I hope!)
