View Full Version : What is the best skyline in Georgia outside Atlanta metro?
MattSal April 23rd, 2005, 06:44 PM What is the best skyline in Georgia, outside of the Atlanta metro area?
That means Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, etc. are excluded from the vote.
Well then? I couldn't find very good pics, but here are some . . .

Buck April 23rd, 2005, 07:44 PM Savannah and Macon have EXCELLENT small city skylines. Absolutely beautiful, both of them are. But I have to give it to Augusta.
MattSal April 23rd, 2005, 08:04 PM ^My logic exactly. :colgate:
NWGeorgian April 23rd, 2005, 08:38 PM I'll have to go with Rome, Georgia. I'm a huge fan of Savannah but because it's all the way across the state I don't get to see it too often. But I see Rome on a near weekly basis I'll have to go with it.
gwiATLeman April 23rd, 2005, 08:55 PM There is no skyline outside metro Atlanta. Cloumbus a has a couple of pretty tall ones that are nowhere near each other. But since Augusta comes the closest, I go with Agusta.
btw Ive seen better angles of Macon that make it look like a little more like a skyline.
Buck April 23rd, 2005, 08:56 PM Um, skyline? Rome? Great town, but in terms of skyline...
SkyHigh529 April 23rd, 2005, 11:12 PM I'm inclined to say Savannah because I prefer its architecture and downtown, but it really doesnt have a "skyline". So with that, I'm going to go with Augusta.
SkyHigh529 April 23rd, 2005, 11:13 PM Savannah and Macon have EXCELLENT small city skylines. Absolutely beautiful, both of them are. But I have to give it to Augusta.
I have to admit that I was pleasently surprised with Macons downtown when I visited on foot.
Atlman1 April 23rd, 2005, 11:52 PM Columbus has the tallest and most modern buildings than all of the other cities, but unfortunately the buildings are all spread out. Both the Government Center and AFLAC buildings are very nice and light up well at night. If AFLAC was in DT Columbus, than Columbus would surpass all other GA cities by far. Hopefully, with a new hotel being mentioned DT, Columbus's skyline will continue to grow. Maybe AFLAC will build something down there new soon :) .
james2390 April 24th, 2005, 12:20 AM I have been to all of those cities mentioned, but I am going to go with Savannah because of it's setting.
Atlman1 April 26th, 2005, 12:21 AM The second picture of Columbus looks at least 10 years old. Downtown has changed a lot since then. Does anyone have a better picture of Columbus?
Lakelander April 26th, 2005, 05:19 AM I've never been to Augusta, but I'd say Macon, out of it, Savannah and Columbus.
MarcusJY April 26th, 2005, 05:02 PM Those are bad angles of Macon's downtown. I've been to all these cities and Macon's is the most impressive, especially when you look at from the east. I will try and find better pictures, but this one from the angle that I'm looking for. I know the people are blocking the skyline, but it will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Atlman1 April 26th, 2005, 05:50 PM I know this sounds like a really stupid question, but could someone tell me how to post pictures? I can't figure it out and it's driving me crazy!
MattSal April 26th, 2005, 09:53 PM ^Don't worry, most of us asked that at some point in our membership. :D
Find the url of the image you want to use (of the image, not the page it is on) and place it between the tags, like so:
url
@MarcusJY: I know. There really aren't many good photos of Macon anywhere. My favorite view is from Ocmulgee.
Atlman1 April 27th, 2005, 01:53 AM Thanks MattSal for the help. I have tried it numerous times with different sites, but it just wont work for some reason. Could you maybe give me an example because I have some really cool pictures I want to post.
james2390 April 27th, 2005, 05:45 AM I have some Macon skyline photos I'll post tomorrow in my photobucket.
NWGeorgian April 28th, 2005, 12:03 AM Rome has a nice skyline, you just have to know where to look to catch it. Driving over the bridge on Turner McCall Blvd provides a nice view of the historic brick buildings with the clocktower overlooking downtown. And with the hospital being built up just north of downtown is going to be home to some nice buildings in the future.
james2390 April 28th, 2005, 12:35 AM Thought I had more Macon pics, but apparently not.

Rural King April 28th, 2005, 05:08 AM I would vote for Savannah, then for Macon. I like the look of the city's skyline more than height. Historical structures get an edge with me too.

But isn't height the definition of a skyline. Without height you just have some historic buildings, not a skyline
scguy April 28th, 2005, 06:50 PM I like Augusta's skyline the best. Coming in on the elevated John C. Cahoun expressway you get great views of Both Downtown and the Medical School district, which has its own midrise skyline itself.

Macon's downtown, is pretty historic and suprisingly urban, as well. Here's some pics I took about 2 years ago.

gwiATLeman April 28th, 2005, 11:17 PM Macon, Augusta both have very charming downtowns but I think they need to work to get a little more happening there and make them more the center of their metro areas. Columbus isn't bad either and of course Savannah is Savannah.
Rural King April 29th, 2005, 03:39 AM But isn't height the definition of a skyline. Without height you just have some historic buildings, not a skyline
I personally don't think so. A skyline could be as little a handful of taller buildings and some church towers, esp. when you are talking about older, historic, but smaller cities. To me a skyline is the sight/imagery you associate with a town or city.
If you used height alone, then many cities would be hard pressed to have a skyline. Look at this thread, Macon, Culumbus, and Savannah would probably be knocked out, and Augusta would be the only true skyline.
@ Lakelander- Thanks for sharing those pics. Really great shots showing Macon's urban qualities! I really enjoy seeing such pics.
dromulus April 29th, 2005, 04:07 AM i think augusta is the best skyline outside of atlanta. columbus has the aflac building which i think is the newest and tallest outside of atlanta, but too bad it was not built downtown.

I totally agree with the AFLAC statement. It is very unfortunate that it wasn't built DT. If it was, Columbus would have the best skyline outside metro Atlanta easily. Hopefully, as fast as AFLAC is growing, they will build another tower in the city. If they do, I think they would put it DT. Columbus has had many opportunities to get some taller buildings DT, especially with the new TSYS campus DT along the riverwalk. They decided to build 3 large buildings (1 million+ sq. ft.) but only with 5 floors. I have no clue why they didn't build 2 or 3 highrises. It makes since to me. There are plans for a new hotel DT. Columbus has much more modern buildings than the other GA cities. It's home to AFLAC, Synovus, TSYS, Carmike Cinemas, CB&T, and Hughston Orthopedic Hospital (one of the best in the country). Personally, I think it is just a matter of time until DT Columbus explodes with highrise construction. With the large corporate base, eventually one of these companies will want to build a new building.
MattSal April 29th, 2005, 04:17 AM Could someone PLEASE post some pictures of Columbus? I have dug as deep as the internet will let me, but there seems to be none.
In all actuality, I've never even been to downtown Macon or anywhere near Columbus at all.
And of course, I live in Augusta, so I'll defend it to the death. :D

I have tried to put some pictures up MattSal, but everytime I try I get the box with the red X. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
MattSal April 29th, 2005, 04:29 AM ^PM me the link to the websites or images. I'll see what I can do.
If it works, I'll tell you how to do it.
Meanwhile, someone has revived my Augusta photo thread. Why don't ya'll go take a good look at Augusta's skyline. :D

B'ham Bound May 26th, 2005, 08:42 PM Wow... I'm surprised Macon has such an impressive skyline for a city it's size. How large is their metro area (assuming they have a metro area)?
MarcusJY May 26th, 2005, 09:23 PM Macon's MSA is around 230,000 as of 2005 est. But at the 2000 census it was around 375,000 and 3rd largest in GA. Warner Robins lobbied to get their on MSA and won even though it is only 15 miles from Macon and in the joining county. The area is growing and Macon is still the hub of Middle Ga even though it is experiencing the sprawl of larger cities, and WR is an extremely fast growing bedroom community.
B'ham Bound May 26th, 2005, 10:31 PM ^ I just looked at a map of GA to see where Warner Robins is, and I can officially say, requesting their own MSA was one dumbass move. The city is right next door to Macon... That's unbelievable!
YEROCAL August 16th, 2006, 06:07 AM MACON HAS THE BEST AND I HAVE THE WEBSITE TO PROVE IT AT WWW. NEWTOWN MACON.COM, IT HAS A SEVERAL GREAT PICTURES OF MACON DOWNTOWN SKYLINE, ONCE YOU ENTERED THE SITE CLICK ON PROJECTS AND SEE FOR YOUR SELF.
krazeeboi August 16th, 2006, 06:17 AM Augusta. Although I will say that what I've seen of Macon (primarily on this forum) has impressed me.
FLAWDA-FELLA August 16th, 2006, 09:02 AM Augusta for me, but Columbus is a close second.
PiperPig August 16th, 2006, 03:29 PM Okay, I'll say Augusta, just because we have a giant pink building made out of stucco and a carbon copy bank building that looks identical to one in Asheville. :bash: Seriously though, the view of downtown Augusta from the Partridge Inn and Summerville totally washes out the other towns, especially at night. But really, Augusta, Macon, Columbus, Savannah and Athens could all compete with each other for the best skyline and the pathetic thing is we'd still lose to places like Sandy Springs.
Yerocal, that was a good website on downtown Macon. Hopefully they can stop the exodus of people leaving that city for the suburbs.
UPWARDATLANTA August 17th, 2006, 05:34 AM Savannah is just so beautiful.
