View Full Version : The Ugliest Building In Your City?
Travis007 April 23rd, 2005, 11:36 PM In Toronto, it's gotta be the Novotel Hotel in North York. Just look at it, a pink/purple facade with greenish glass. :runaway:
Thank god it's nestled away up there in North York. :bash:

The 'Sauga April 24th, 2005, 12:07 AM In Vancouver I would say it's Harbour centre. I never seen what's so nice about it, it's just a commie block with a observation tower on top. The design never apealed to me, it's not much better than the Genex Tower in Belgrade.

In Toronto I would say the Toronto Star Building at the foot of Yonge Street.

Hey, don't be dissin' up da Genex.:D
I for one admire brutalism, especially when it makes such a powerful statement.
ssiguy2 April 24th, 2005, 02:44 AM Her's one all Vancouverites can agree with..........the CBC building downtown.
LooselogInThePeg April 24th, 2005, 02:52 AM In Winnipeg I'd say it's the downtown Radisson hotel. It doesn't look like anything TOO terrible from the front but if you see it from the back it's got to be the ugliest thing ever built. Think Genex without the aesthetic appeal.
Natelox April 24th, 2005, 03:02 AM Her's one all Vancouverites can agree with..........the CBC building downtown.

You're right dude, pretty ugly. Raw concrete for the whole tower. :puke:

Manulife is one of my favourite Toronto towers.
Travis007 April 24th, 2005, 04:34 AM Well Filip, if you love concrete structures, then Toronto is your city! :) ;)
So then what kind of buildings do you hate?
Filip April 24th, 2005, 04:36 AM Yup, TO's the place for me - well and mostly any other Eastern European city.:D
I hate kitchy PoMo, like the ones gracing most of Dubai and Shanghai.:puke:
This building is just sickening...

Exactly, it's like the Jetsons or smth. Horrible architecture imo, luckily Toronto lacks in that department.
*Jarrod April 24th, 2005, 05:24 AM yeah, i don't like those pictures above... they're pretty horrible.

Actually, THAT'S the building I wanted to compare it to but Manulife centre is still a nicer looking building IMO.
Anyway, from the front, it's boring and grey and depressing (the Radisson I mean) but nothing worth noting. I was trying to find pictures of it from the back though...then you could really see just how nasty the building looks.
PS: I thought that that was the Sheraton....or a hotel at least.

The Sheraton and Manulife share a lot of similarities. Check out previous pics on this thread. They're different buildings in different parts of the city.
bluenoser April 24th, 2005, 06:10 PM This would have to be the worst in Halifax. And the worst part is it's our tallest.
I dunno man.. there's a few really ill-conceived midrises (and the Aliant building) downtown, and the Cowie Hill apartments...
cassius April 24th, 2005, 07:18 PM I actually like the Manulife Centre in Toronto for what it is. A big, slabtacular, imposing concrete structure. As ugly as it may be, I'd be disapointed to see it go.
My vote for ugliest goes to the Toronto Star building, which I used to work in.
Ashok April 24th, 2005, 07:27 PM I really hate the hydro building in Montreal, just a huge piece of uglyness sitting on the east site of downtown

citizen j May 2nd, 2005, 07:24 PM ^ Hmm, there's something alluring about that in a squalid, post-industrial sculpture sense. Looks like the live model of a Charles Demuth painting.
LooselogInThePeg May 3rd, 2005, 03:54 AM ^lol. You'd find Point Douglas in Winnipeg VERY alluring then.

This is definatley top of the list.
Those other residential commie blocks in Toronto wouldn't make my list because they were built to serve their purpose, cheap, affordable housing. THey were not built to win any awards, and are similar in every large CDN city, as well as most cities in the world.

Well, like I said before, from the front it's nothing all that much worse than many other buildings in the country. It's the back that looks so horrible to me. If I could find a shot of it from Graham you'd see that I have some justification for my opinion of this building. What it really needs is a paint job or re-cladding. Actually, recladding would do wonders for the building IMO.

LOL...thanks SimpleSimon. For some reason it doesn't look as bad as usual in that photo. I think maybe it's just one of those buildings where the details are what makes it ugly IMO. The windows on the parkade look very dirty and murky, and there is a faded paint job that isn't visible in that picture. For me, I guess it's my opinion that to see it in person makes it such an ugly looking building. Just a paint job even would do wonders for it IMO.

SimpleSimon May 9th, 2005, 02:29 AM For raddison, the east and west (i.e. windowless sides) are ugly. I do agree with the parkade though. There is however one apartment near the corner of Sargent and Isabel that is ugly. I will try to find a pic.
SimpleSimon May 9th, 2005, 02:40 AM Ahh, here we go. This is by far the ugliest building in Winnipeg. No contest, case closed.

EdZed May 9th, 2005, 03:55 AM Fording Place in Calgary on 9th and McLeod. To bad the only picture I could find does not do the justice and this picture is old, right now there is wood on some windows and the building looks very dirty from the outside.

Mock May 12th, 2005, 09:24 PM None of the buildings in downtown Edmonton are particularily offensive, but I think I found the ugliest one on the south skyline, which I captured unawares.

I really don't know if that is ugly, in fact it looks cool, and is a high-rated hotel. I mean it was built fairly recently, and apparently most people who participate in contests on MuchMusic stay there and everybody calls it SWANKY. I like how the Holiday Inn lit up at night there. However, there was a hotel in downtown Toronto that used to be a Holiday Inn, and then become COLONY hotel, it's near the Metropolitan Hotel. That was pretty cheesy.
worldwide May 14th, 2005, 07:41 PM true that, jaybird that building is hideous, but it grows on you and it actually looks good at street level, on the dundas side at least. with all of the ivy growing up the side. have you ever seen that building behind cherryhill mall that is the tallest one of them all http://www.emporis.com/files/transfer/sixwm/2003/12/236541.jpg sorry i didnt show the pic, but i dont know how, if someone could tell me that would be cool

I agree, I usually love commie blocks. Especially the ones in that chinese city in the "Commie Blocks to the MAXXXXXXXXXXX" topic. Very neat and organized.
This one just stands out like a sore thumb, though.
aplz May 16th, 2005, 12:01 AM I live in K-W, so I'll do two.
First one is the Oxlea Tower, this real ugly red brick building in the heart of downtown. At 12 floors, it's one of the few actual office 'towers' we have in Kitchener, infact one of the biggest downtown. Excuse the Emporis watermarks.
http://img223.echo.cx/img223/2846/2105768ym.jpg
Next, for Waterloo, there is the Richmond Square towers, which are two 18 floor residental buildings somewhere in Waterloo. They remind me of ugly Russian/Moscow commie blocks, only in Canada.
http://img223.echo.cx/img223/4912/1811276yq.jpg
Hmm, I guess another Kitchener building would be the Commerce House, an early office building built downtown. Anybody who likes concrete buildings will like this. Allthough only 11 floors, it's quite big, at least for Kitchener.
http://img243.echo.cx/img243/2430/commercebig5tr.jpg
While this isnt my city, Quebec has to have some of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen.
Examples:
The Raddison: http://www.emporis.com/en/il/pc/?id=113435&aid=8
Hôtel Loews Le Concorde: http://www.emporis.com/en/il/pc/?id=113432&aid=8
Édifice d'Youville : http://www.emporis.com/en/il/im/?id=164929

AndrewJM3D December 29th, 2011, 07:35 PM This is hands down the ugliest building in Toronto. located at Bloor and Dundas.
It's a 1960's apartment, on top of a 1960's office, on top of a 1960's strip plaza.

Taller, Better December 30th, 2011, 08:07 AM I'd put forth Mississauga's City Hall. A vile PoMo nightmare that resembles more a prison than a civic centre. Came out right about the time that "whimsical" had reached the end of its run.

I'm sorry I don't know who took this pic. I've had it in my files for donkey's years.
isaidso December 30th, 2011, 08:26 AM ^^ I love Mississauga City Hall; it's something Hitler would have built if he was around in the 1980s. It's easily one of my favourite buildings in the GTA.
AndrewJM3D December 30th, 2011, 09:07 AM That has to be the first time I've heard Hitler's name used in a compliment. LOL.
Huhu December 30th, 2011, 11:11 AM If Hitler built that, they would have bombed the sh!t out of it so at least it would be entertaining.
Taller, Better December 30th, 2011, 04:34 PM It is probably the most forbidding and unwelcoming Civic structure I've ever seen. It would make a swell prison; all it is missing is a ten foot rolled barbed wire fence all round it. I think perhaps it took inspiration from Hitler's bunker.

Don't be shy, folks.
Toronto3 December 30th, 2011, 05:10 PM Oh well in that case, dont get me started on those squat apartments in North Vancouver....... Nice view of the city though. Alright i think we tortured the world with ugly Canada enough. Just couldnt resist this last one

There is a certain civic centre in the Peg that takes the cake, even away from Missassauga. Their city hall along with the Public Safety Bldg (shown below) all make up up one big unfriendly complex. Winnipeg should build a new City Hall and flatten this block.
(Actually, I take that back. Mississauga's is still worse IMO, this one is just so unfriendly though.)
google images, all of the one complex

:ohno:
vid December 31st, 2011, 12:13 AM That first one is the Public Safety Building, but after parts of its facade started collapsing, people began calling it "the Publicly Unsafe Building". It is the headquarters of Winnipeg Police. There is a parkade nearby that actually looks better. (http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll=49.900606,-97.139794&spn=0.004437,0.00883&t=k&z=17&vpsrc=6&layer=c&cbll=49.900243,-97.139541&panoid=oc0lIjGqJkHDvVg1TrUXBw&cbp=12,254.68,,0,-10.94)
Winnipeg's city hall isn't too bad. Across from that is the concert hall (http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll=49.899984,-97.138184&spn=0.004437,0.00883&t=k&z=17&vpsrc=6&layer=c&cbll=49.899779,-97.13834&panoid=es5NQToRFyvLmczLzFSLcw&cbp=12,86.45,,0,-6.23) which has the same general architectural theme.
The whole area around Winnipeg's City Hall, except for Union Bank Tower, is basically what Architects of the late 1960s thought all cities should look like. the Public Safety Building almost looks like something you'd find in Africa.

I did like his taste in architecture and most Nazi symbolism visually interesting. Probably not very PC, but I also find those Nazi uniforms kind of hot. :shifty:
Taller, Better December 31st, 2011, 07:15 AM ^^ Hitler had a famous and highly influential architect named Albert Speer. We studied him in Architecture classes. It is amazing the number of 1950's buildings around that drew obvious inspiration from his work.
AndrewJM3D December 31st, 2011, 09:14 AM davidivivid, I kind of like that building. I'm not a fan of most Brutalism but some of them when you get up close have an organic feel. There is a Brutalist building near Bay and Dundas that I know some architectural fanatics love but I can't stand. It's just cold and ugly.
vanboy2 January 1st, 2012, 08:10 PM I will try to find one of the ''ugliest building''in Vancouver and post it here....hummmmm which one should I take a picture of...?

I wouldn't say that I found them "hot" but I do agree in that the uniforms were attractive. And that is not by accident either. They spent a lot of time and money on designing the most visually appealing and symbolic uniforms.

Did Speer design that giant Nazi stadium that was to hold 400,000 spectators? Now that's what I call making a statement.

I know right! LOL I'm not a fan of Herr Hilter and I'm opposed to EVERYTHING he stood for. But I gotta say, some of the stuff they built wasn't half bad. God knows it's better than most of what is built today (that ugly addition to the ROM comes to mind). I guess I'm a fan of the monumental. Also, I must say, Thomas Kretschmann looked soooo sexy in that uniform. Also, I must say, even the Nazi's would have found most of the building in this thread ugly and tacky looking!
AndrewJM3D January 8th, 2012, 08:16 PM I love that ugly addition to the R.O.M, it's a huge improvement of the old addition it replaced.
