View Full Version : Shanghai Pudong International Airport
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm April 24th, 2005, 04:46 AM Here's another rendering I found of the new "Master Plan" including Terminal 2 (currently under construction) and Terminal 3 with one of the two satellite concourses shown:

Enjoy!
Stamford Island April 24th, 2005, 11:53 AM R u sure its the final plan? There seems to be many different plans...
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm April 24th, 2005, 07:55 PM Yeah this is the plan as it stands today. The original plan was to build four identical terminals but this was scrapped and now the one above is being used. The old plan:

Q-TIP April 24th, 2005, 08:27 PM That looks amazing! So many taxiways???
Chibcha2k April 25th, 2005, 03:11 AM doesn't look very congested to need more terminals, not even in the renders
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm April 25th, 2005, 05:58 AM ^ Actually the airport's only existing terminal, Terminal 1, is already running at peak capacity, 20 Million passengers per year, and other airlines are interested in flying here. By the time Terminal 2 (The one opposite terminal 1) & Terminal 3 (The rectangular shaped building that will serve the two '+' shaped satellite buildings) are complete, the airport will be able to handle 80 Million! :cheers1:
superchan7 April 25th, 2005, 06:02 AM Wellp, so much for Hongqiao. Now all they need to do is extend the maglev line and promote its usage.
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm April 25th, 2005, 06:08 AM ^ Actually celestar0 in the older Pudong thread (which I was lazy and didn't want to bother digging up) explained Hongqiao is staying in operation because all the businesses in the region like to use it for cargo, because they haven't built enough highways to connect Pudong. SIAA was even talking up putting in another runway at Hongqiao, which if you ask me is a stupid idea because the airport's already surrounded by buildings. I think once they work out the infrastructure issues with Pudong, they'll either bulldoze Hongqiao or turn it into a general aviation facility.
I also believe they're building an extension of the Maglev across the river so it'll be useful and not have its other terminus in the middle-of-nowhere Pudong. :)
Airport Addict April 25th, 2005, 12:01 PM ^ Actually celestar0 in the older Pudong thread
Perhaps the moderators could merge the two threads (older one is at id 171412) ?
Another interesting bit of information: Lord Rogers' architectural practice has updated and expanded their online presence. At rrp.co.uk you can get to a fairly detailed presentation (more detailed than seen seen on here hitherto) of his losing bid for Pudong Phase 2. It, incidentally, was first brought up on this forum in an even older thread (way back in April/May 2004) - and in my opinion is, for the moment at least, the greatest terminal never built. Though I can see that it was more prudent to take a smaller Terminal 2 first and than go in phases as demand grows.
celestar0 April 25th, 2005, 10:02 PM @Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm -
That's so far the biggest & clearest aerial rendering of T2 vFinal I've seen, which is so hard (at least 4 me) to find on the net!
@Airport Addict -
The rendering pix of PVG @ RRP's updated website are so great & comprehensive! Thanks for your info! So pity that such striking design will NEVER be materialized...
Another rendering of T2 by ECADI (which I posted b4 in thread #171412):

Rendering of T2 by the Team of Landrum & Brown / Yang Molen...(link in pdf format):

What a difference! The latter was the original winning design. ECADI is responsible for follow-up....
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm April 25th, 2005, 10:58 PM I totally agree with Airport Addict. RRP's Terminal is deliciously incredible, and a total shame it won't be built:

Does anyone know if Terminal 3 and the two satellite buildings are "finalized", or is there still hope to build something like the RRP terminal in its place? :)
Karl McF May 16th, 2005, 11:52 PM I seen the pictures of the desgin of the shanghai pudong airport.
At the web site of www.rrp.co.uk
I all picture so nice. Hoping for the airport to get build soon.

What?!!?!? So they not even going to build ANY of this at all?
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm June 7th, 2005, 05:14 PM ^ It's really sad isn't it? Such a beautiful design, but instead they want to build a plain rectangle terminal with two t-shaped satellite buildings. :llama:
Monkey June 7th, 2005, 06:04 PM I have seen the plans at the Shanghai Development Museum in People's Square just a few days ago. Cheese is right. This does seem like the final plan along with the aforementioned identical pair of + shaped satelites. Too bad Roger's plan never made it but the new one does seem impressive too. One difference however - the museum mentioned a capacity of 60 million once the two terminals and salelites are complete - not 80 million. However 60 million does seem rather low given the scale of the airport.
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm June 7th, 2005, 06:13 PM ^ I think they're referring to Terminal 2 & 3 with the two satellites having a combined capacity of 60 Million ppm. Add the current Terminal 1 in and you have a total capacity for Pudong of over 80 Million ppm.
Handsome June 7th, 2005, 07:31 PM nice
raymond_tung88 June 7th, 2005, 10:48 PM Why was Richard Rogers' design not chosen? The current Terminal 3 BUilding is just that building that looks like a " + " sign?
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm June 8th, 2005, 04:48 AM Why was Richard Rogers' design not chosen?
I'd like to know this too please. :) :) :) :) :) :)
Handsome June 8th, 2005, 12:54 PM which one did they6 choose??
raymond_tung88 June 8th, 2005, 03:08 PM So what does the Terminal 3 design they have chosen (for now) look like? I'm confused. Is Terminal 3 just the " + " shaped building?
babystan03 June 8th, 2005, 07:13 PM Went to the museum on Monday......Terminal 3 is located between terminal 1 & 2........

Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm June 8th, 2005, 08:09 PM ^ FABULOUS PICS!!! Thanks so much for stopping by that model, we've been trying to get someone to do that for quite a while! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
Yeah T3 is the plain rectangle in between T1 & T2. I just assume T3 will serve those two satellite buildings yes?

hkskyline June 9th, 2005, 04:39 AM HSBC launches advertising at Pudong Airport aerobridge
3 June 2005
HSBC is still trying to establish the bank's image in China despite its long history and prestige. There are advertisements of HSBC on the aerobridge of the Shanghai Pudong International Airport. This is the first time advertising has ever been allowed on the aerobridges at airports in China. This move has re-enforced HSBC's position as the best foreign-invested bank in China. The cooperation between HSBC Group and Shanghai Airport Group will last for 5 years until 2009. During the five years, HSBC has the sole right to advertise on the aerobridge of the Shanghai Pudong International Airport. It is expected that over 135 million passengers will see the advertisements of HSBC on the aerobridge within this period.

Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm July 7th, 2005, 08:31 PM ... Just wanted to save this thread from extinction! :) :) :)
There's waaaaay too many news threads going on in the airports section and not enough cool projects being discussed, like this one!
Anyone have new construction pics, renderings?
Cheese Mmmmmmmmmmmm July 8th, 2005, 04:02 PM ... So no one cares about this project? How sad... but I don't blame anyone for hating the Shanghai Airport Authority when they dumped one of the most awesome terminals ever designed by RRP. :) :) :)

YES! I saw that in the earlier posts too... not building it makes me want to cry...
Monkey November 28th, 2005, 03:38 AM Richard Rogers is the best airport architect in the world. In my opinion he exceeds Norman Foster and Paul Andreu. It's such a shame the Rogers design won't be built in Shanghai. It would have eclipsed his effort in Madrid and been the best in the world. Now I think it's between Roger's new Madrid Barajas and the Norman Foster's Beijing.
