Thanks, guys for the nice pictures. Could we also get some pics of Indore? It is the economic heart of MP and is a pretty dynamic city. Even in 1997, it was already building lower-sized shopping malls and supermarkets. I would think that the mall revolution would not have left Indore also untouched.

looks like a naturally formed lake (as against manmade reservoir).

Its about 15 minutes away and airport is about 30 mins away..



I am really curious to see pictures of New Bhopal. I heard they did a good job on that one.

After visiting Nagpur,New Bhopal seriously wasnt that fascinating at all.Nothing much to see in Bhopal..except for the Lake where you can do boat riding.Other than that,Bhopal is still in a pretty bad shape..Bhopal just has one flyover and that too in the far end of the city called Chetak Bridge which runs over a railway line.There seriously is no place where you can go to kill time other than that lake view road or the V.I.P road on the other side of the lake or this Zoo if you follow lake view road.Bhopal has about 4 lakes with one being man made.
Other than seeing that one perticular lake(i went there like 6 times in 7 days),there literally is nothing to do..

NIce pics..I feel Bougain Villa is the best shrub to be planted in medians. Not much care required and would be a feast for the eyes when it blooms.

Bhopal is getting a lot cleaner and nicer especially near the lake. There are some beautiful Masjids and Mahals. I'll post some pictures from summer 2007 soon.

Bhopal is amazingly clean! although i am from Indore and folks from Indore and bhopal fight over things like Mum and Del. I would just accept that bhopal as a city looks a lot better than Indore, just like a mumbaikar would say that Delhi has tremendously improved. But the feel of the city, u know! Indore looks more lively. I have been to bhopal sooo many tmes. and some places are stunning! bhopal must be projected as the best city representing Madhya Pradesh. But people there must change the way they live there.

BTW , i m from bhopal and also regular visitor of indore because my so many relatives live there ... u r right when u say indore is more lively ... the only think it lacks is infrastructure ... otherwise indore would have been one of best cities of india ... but i disagree that people of bhopal needs to change the way of living ... i must say style of living isn't that bad ... it has changed a lot in past few years ... and the things bhopal lacks will come within an year so it will become a very good city:):):)

So, based on the discussions here, Bhopal is greener, cleaner and has better infrastructure (like Delhi vs Mumbai) whereas Indore is more prosperous, business-oriented, lively, and cosmo/metropolitan, correct?

What is meant exactly by the comment "bhopal people really need to change the way they live"? Is it that Bhopal is not modern enough? I can see Indore being more modern but is Bhopal really that far behind - may be Bhopal today is what Indore was a few years ago, which isn't that bad!! After all, most cities with numbers of government employees won't feel the same as cities with a huge business community! :)

Let me know if I'm right.....

u r absolutely right about comparision of bhopal and indore ...
but nowadays spending power of people of bhopal has increased due to increase in government pay (6th pay commision) and also increase in business class people ... but still spending power is lesser in comparision to indore ...
area wise bhopal is very big ( bigger than indore ) but has 1-2 lacs lesser population than indore at about 17-18 lacs ... bhopal is also very cosmopolitan due to many central government offices/institutes .... and indore has a large of marathi , gujarati and marwari community ... and its like mini pune/ahmedabad :):):)

good roads, sarkari buildings and sprawling bungalows, you know, are some of the generously provided gifts to bhopal, being a rajdhani. It is a beautiful city indeed. Indore lacks those good boulevards bhopal has which make it look like bangalore. yeah there are some places in Bhopal especially the roads are somewhat like road in and around malleshwaram , bangalore

but those bad city buses spoil everything. both Indore and Bhopal got their own transport companies a the same time. but, while Indore transport company is thriving, Bhopal had to pull off the buses from its roads. don't know why. My cousins tell me that it just didn't work there!

MP04, why don't you provideus the photos of places like the hillside besides the lake where the houses and buildings looks very nice and some photos of areas around cm's bungalow, city park, and other sarkari buildings.birla mandir and Assembly. they would make others from the forum know what cities in M.P are like!

life is very peaceful in Bhopal. i think it is like a pensioner's paradise. a little slow city which goes to sleep at around 9-10 o clock.it is like a big hill station. I guess mini bangalore. In Indore, you will find crowded places, people bustling to go somewhere, more traffic, more activity and a relatively mixed culture (though not as diverse as other metros). you can get things to eat even at night people usually roam around the streets carefree at night till 2-3. (although after terror threat and all police crakdown has discouraged this a lot)
some relatively small software companies like impetus is in Indore. you have Mphasis and retail outlets of almost every brand here (not exotic ones, but). pharma and automobile mfg, transportation and aviation hub of M.P. Indore is the financial capital.

well currently i m not in bhopal ... so will not be able to take the photos ...if i go there i will definately take the photos ... esp. of the picturesque shahpura lake and surrounding colonies , mansions , villas etc because that place is a hot spot nowadays

regarding city buses , they r no less than gutter services ... i have never seen such worst city buses (so called mini buses) in any city of india ... star buses were introduced but they failed because of lack of planning and also these buses were frequently attacked by mini bus walas ...
but the good thing is 225 new buses ( ac and non ac ) high quality buses will be plying soon in bhopal under the central governments jnnurm scheme and that will run on BRTS corrider being constructed and also on other roads ... but i m not sure whether government will phase out the mini buses

I know well Bhopal and Bangalore. Bangalore is well laid out better than any other metro.

As far as Bhopalis are concerned they are enjoy life better than most others and are happy goers .. kind of me no worry.. me no care. Some donot like this attitude.

Bhopal has surprised me!

Although on a soar point ther Union Carbide plant is still there and has not been demolished or made safe from a BBC report recently.

The place should be turned into a memorial park for the victims after a proper clean up and demolition.

the government has plans to make memorial there ... but i don't know how much work has been done :)

Water bodies supplying drinking water are well maintained. Others are artificial lakes, again well maintained, but definitely water not meant for consumption.

I love such clean and green roads of Bhopal. When it comes to city development particularly government initiatives, Bhopal serves as a showcase city for showing what government is capable of doing. I love these roads of bhopal. I wish MP gov. also paid attention to Develop such beautiful boulevards in at least some parts of Indore. The road around the lake, I think is VIP road. It looks very beautiful. Indore is more like a pvt development and they don't pay much attention to beautification of the city. I love Bhopal's views, hills etc

btw always wanted to ask this. To what extent is Bhopal still suffering from the gas tragedy? Cause the media presents a sort of picture that Bhopal is not progressing at all.

well the people who have contracted diseases at time of tragedy r still suffering from it ... even now i think ( not completely sure ) some new born have malformations in their body ...
also , the biggest thing is that the toxic wastes that was released hasen't been disposed ... it still is their at that site ... the ground water in that area is full of toxic because of that and people living there r contracting varied diseases ... now the gov. has decided to dispose it at pithampur industrial area near indore but there is a lot of protest regarding that ...
the memorial hasen't been made till yet

and regarding progress of bhopal , it has come along way after that ... bhopal is in news only because of tragedy ... even my friends from other states only know bhopal for tragedy ... but there is alot more apart from it ... i can see lots of development happening everywhere in almost all fields

and guess what is happening in Indore. The villagers near that Industrial cluster (Pithampur), are afraid that similar diseases may strike them also. Quite obviously the ground water is most likely to be affected even if other things are prevented. It also poses a serious threat to Pharma SEZ and auto cluster in Pithampus, Indore.
