QUEEN'S GARDENS RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT

Queens Gardens is a unique luxury residential development in the centre of Pafos and has already been described as one of the most exciting projects in Cyprus.

The building will be set on a hill facing the processional route between the presidential palace and the old city.

The primary role of the building is to encourage citizens to participate in the democratic process. To this end, the design places the public at the heart of the new complex and brings them into direct contact with the working spaces of the institution.

The foyer surrounding the hill forms an extension to the public open spaces adjacent to the site. It is a space of meeting and exchange between the public and their representatives - a contemporary agora for a modern and dynamic democracy. It is flanked by the committee and political meeting rooms. At the symbolic and functional centre of the building is the parliament chamber itself, a tall alabaster drum diffusing light into the hall and foyer that surrounds it.

The hot dry climate of Nicosia informs the architecture of the building. Deep overhangs, massive construction and evaporative cooling reduce the heat built up during the day. At night, natural ventilation pre-cools the structure.

MALTA, CYPRUS TO LAUNCH JOINT INTERNATIONAL
PROMOTION PROGRAMME WITH EMIRATES AIRLINES

Over the next few days, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and Emirates Airlines will be putting together a top-level technical committee to explore all possible avenues of active co-operation in the tourism sector. The committee will be holding its first meeting in Malta on the 20th of March. The Technical committee will include representatives from the MTA, the CTO and Emirates, as well as tour operators and travel agents from the respective destinations. The aim of this committee will be to create a dynamic action plan for promoting Malta, Cyprus and Dubai, jointly at international level, both as significant destinations in themselves, as well as convenient hubs for travel in the immediate environs. It is envisaged that this strategy will be particularly effective in rapidly-growing, emerging Asian markets, such as China and India. Tourists traveling towards long-haul destinations from this region would be far more favourably-disposed towards booking multiple-destination itineraries, rather than single-stop trips.

The agreement to create this strategic alliance was reached this week in Nicosia, Cyprus, between Malta Tourism Authority Executive Chairman, Romwald Lungaro Mifsud, Chairman of the Cyprus Tourism Authority, Photis Photiou and the Senior Vice-President, Commercial Operations – Europe, Emirates, Mr. Keith Longstaff. The delegations also included senior officials from all three entities as well as representatives from the Maltese and Cypriot private sector. During this meeting it was agreed that Malta and Cyprus would embark upon a joint-promotional participation programme in the relevant Travel and Tourism fairs. In fact Malta and Cyprus will exhibit together at the Dubai launch of the 2006/2007 Emirates’ Holidays Brochure in April, followed by co-participation at the Arabian Travel Market in the first week of May, also in Dubai. It is also envisaged that Malta-Cyprus delegations will be attending other important fairs in tandem, such as the Beijing International Tourism Expo in June, as well as a number of other trade fairs in the region over the coming months. During the meeting it was also agreed that specific measures would be taken to further promote bilateral tourism between Malta and Cyprus.

In a joint statement, commenting on the agreement reached in Nicosia, MTA Executive Chairman, Romwald Lungaro Mifsud and CTO Chairman Photis Photiou remarked that this was a breakthrough agreement, one that will certainly have a beneficial, long-term impact on both countries’ tourism industries. In a scenario wherein the global Tourism sector is constantly undergoing radical changes in trends and patterns, new realities need to be addressed in equally novel ways, otherwise one runs the risk of becoming irrelevant in the marketplace. The alliance being forged is wholly innovative in that two Mediterranean island states, ostensibly competitors, shall be working together to promote the region and, more specifically, both countries, in important emerging markets that, thus far, neither country has tapped effectively. In these particular markets co-operation, rather than competition, will ensure that both Malta and Cyprus stand to gain equally from any inroads made here.

The inclusion of Emirates into the equation also adds a new dimension: Dubai and the Gulf region, providing more and more value to the whole package. One should also underline the importance of being integrally associated with a reputable airline such as Emirates; an airline that is, in no uncertain terms, a gateway to and from Asia and the Far East. Emirates operates an impressive array of regular scheduled flights to most major Asian destinations such as Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and New Delhi, amongst many others. Emirates have been operating four flights a week from Dubai to Cyprus and Malta since October 2005.

Description of the project from the shacolas internet site. the project is well under way,i visited the area last week and it is proceeding quite fast.

The Shacolas Emporium Park is a multifunctional commercial centre located on the southern outskirts of Lefkosia, the capital of Cyprus. The site has direct access from the Lefkosia-Lemesos motorway and with the new traffic network which has been completed in the area, it will be easily accessible from all directions. The project is surrounded by new substantial developments such as the Lefkosia General Hospital, the Headquarters of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, the University Campus, the Head Offices of the two main Banks, other important organisations and the Athalassa Green Park.
The total land area of the project is 102.000 sq. metres and it is divided into several plots. A substantial portion of the land will be used for the construction of the Shacolas Emporium Park. Part of the land has been rented to the well known Swedish company IKEA, the international chain for furniture and other home equipment / appliances.
A large square devoted to "Mother" ("sti Mana") will be created, in expression of appreciation to the Cypriot mother, which with the appropriate landscape, will be ideal for organising a variety of open air events. This Square will be one of the largest on the island and will be a meeting point for all age groups, i.e. a place where everybody can relax and entertain themselves in a beautiful and green environment.
The remaining land will be used for the construction of office and showroom areas.
The promoters: The project is being promoted by ITTL Trade Tourist and Leisure Park Ltd, a company that belongs to the Shacolas Group of Companies.
The location
The project is located within a 7 minute driving distance from the capital's centre, 30 minutes from Larnaka and its international airport and 45 minutes from Lemesos, the second largest city in Cyprus. The project, being adjacent to the Lefkosia-Lemesos and Lefkosia-Larnaka motorway connecting the capital Lefkosia with all other towns and villages of Cyprus, airports and ports, is strategically located with easy access to and from all directions.

Χαμπουλάς, στο πλαίσιο συνέντευξης που παραχώρησε στη «Σ», παρουσίασε σε όλο του το εύρος το σύνολο των οδικών έργων που κατασκευάζονται ή πρόκειται σύντομα ν’ αρχίσουν να κατασκευάζονται, ή σχεδιάζονται επί χάρτου και γίνονται μελέτες για να αρχίσει η κατασκευή τους. Έργα εκατομμυρίων, που τα επόμενα χρόνια θ’ αλλάξουν άρδην τον οδικό χάρτη της Κύπρου και θα συμβάλουν στην πιο άνετη διακίνηση των οδηγών, σε όλο το μήκος και πλάτος της ελεύθερης Κύπρου, χωρίς να παραγνωρίζεται και η προοπτική επανένωσης του νησιού, οπόταν θα χρειασθεί ομαλή οδική σύνδεση και με τις περιοχές που σήμερα είναι κατεχόμενες. (Π.χ. όπως στην περίπτωση του αυτοκινητόδρομου Λευκωσίας - Τροόδους, για τον οποίο υπάρχει προοπτική επέκτασής του μέχρι και τη Μόρφου).
Παράλληλα, ο κ. Χαμπουλάς παρουσίασε στην εφημερίδα μας και τα μεγάλα πολεοδομικά έργα που προωθεί το Τμήμα Δημοσίων Έργων, τα οποία ως επί το πλείστον περιλαμβάνουν κυβερνητικά κτίρια για Υπηρεσίες, με στόχο την άνετη εργασία των κυβερνητικών υπαλλήλων που θα στεγαστούν σ’ αυτά, που θα έχει ως αποτέλεσμα την αναβάθμιση της ποιότητας εργασίας τους.

Τα μεγαλεπήβολα σχέδια του Τμήματος Δημοσίων Έργων

ΟΔΙΚΟ ΔΙΚΤΥΟ
ΑΥΤΟΚΙΝΗΤΟΔΡΟΜΟΙ
1. Αναβάθμιση κόμβων παρακαμπτηρίου Λεμεσού
Κόμβος Πολεμιδιών-Λιμανιού:
Άρχισε στις 10/2/2003 και το Δεκέμβριο του 2005 παραδόθηκε στην κυκλοφορία ο κυρίως αυτοκινητόδρομος. Το έργο θα ολοκληρωθεί πλήρως εντός του έτους, έναντι ποσού συμβολαίου £14.984.631 + Φ.Π.Α. (Εργολάβος: Ιωάννου και Παρασκευαΐδης Λτδ).
Λεωφόρος Σπύρου Κυπριανού - Λευκωσία:
Μέχρι να ληφθεί η τελική απόφαση για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο θα ανακατασκευαστεί το έργο, αποφασίστηκε από το Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο να κατασκευαστεί δρόμος τεσσάρων λωρίδων από τον κυκλικό κόμβο Τσερίου, μέχρι τα φώτα της υπεραγοράς «Ορφανίδης». Τα έργα θα ξεκινήσουν άμεσα, και οι τέσσερις λωρίδες στο πιο πάνω σημείο του δρόμου αναμένεται να είναι έτοιμες σε έξι περίπου μήνες.
Κόμβος Αγ. Φύλας
Άρχισε στις 3/1/2005 και αναμένεται να συμπληρωθεί περί το τέλος του 2006 έναντι ποσού συμβολαίου £12.375.186 + Φ.Π.Α.. (Εργολάβος: Κοινοπραξία Ιωάννου και Παρασκευαΐδης (ο) & Ιωάννου και Παρασκευαΐδης Λτδ).
Κόμβος Μέσα Γειτονιάς
Άρχισε στις 17/1/2005 και αναμένεται να συμπληρωθεί τον Ιούλιο του 2006, έναντι ποσού συμβολαίου £10.772.000 + Φ.Π.Α. {Εργολάβος: Α/φοί Ιακώβου (κατασκευαί) Λτδ}.
Κόμβος Αγ. Αθανασίου
Οι εργασίες άρχισαν στις 12.9.2005 και βάσει συμβολαίου πρέπει να συμπληρωθούν στις 12.3.2007, έναντι ποσού £10.994.000 + Φ.Π.Α. Το έργο χρηματοδοτείται από το Ταμείο Συνοχής της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης σε ποσοστό 62%. (Εργολάβος: Κοινοπραξία Α/φοί Ιακώβου και Medcon Co.).
Κόμβος Γερμασόγειας
Έχουν ζητηθεί προσφορές οι οποίες έληξαν στις 16.12.2005 και κατακυρώθηκαν έναντι ποσού £17.194.792 + Φ.Π.Α. Η έναρξη του έργου αναμένεται σύντομα με διάρκεια κατασκευής 22 μήνες. Το έργο θα χρηματοδοτηθεί από το Ταμείο Συνοχής της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης σε ποσοστό 62% περίπου.
(Εργολάβος: Κοινοπραξία J&B & ΑΒΑΞ).
2. Αυτοκινητόδρομος Κοκκινοτριμιθιάς-Αστρομερίτη
Τμήμα Κοκκινοτριμιθιάς-Δένειας (8.3 χλμ.)
Άρχισε στις 21/1/2003 και ολοκληρώθηκε το Δεκέμβριο του 2005 ο κυρίως αυτοκινητόδρομος, ενώ οι συμπληρωματικές εργασίες θα συμπληρωθούν έναντι δαπάνης £20.239.285 + Φ.Π.Α. (Εργολάβος: Κοινοπραξία Ιωάννου και Παρασκευαΐδης (ο) & Ιωάννου και Παρασκευαΐδης Λτδ).
Τμήμα Δένειας-Αστρομερίτη (17.5 χλμ.)
Η μελέτη δεν έχει προχωρήσει, λόγω του ότι ο δρόμος διέρχεται διά μέσου της ελεγχόμενης από τα Ηνωμένα Έθνη περιοχής και τα Ηνωμένα Έθνη δεν μπόρεσαν να παράσχουν προστασία στους μελετητές.
3. Συνδετικός δρόμος Αεροδρομίου Λάρνακας
Άρχισε στις 27/1/2004 και αναμένεται να ολοκληρωθεί το Σεπτέμβριο 2006 έναντι ποσού συμβολαίου £9.119.000 + Φ.Π.Α. (Εργολάβος: Α/φοί Ιακώβου (κατασκευαί) Λτδ).

Υπό μελέτην
4. Αυτοκινητόδρομος Πάφου-Πόλης
Το έργο θα προωθηθεί με τη μέθοδο DBFO (Μελέτη, Κατασκευή, Χρηματοδότηση, Λειτουργία). Έχουν ετοιμαστεί η περιβαλλοντική και προκαταρκτική μελέτη και ετοιμάζονται τα έγγραφα από εμπειρογνώμονες για προσφοροδότηση του έργου με την πιο πάνω μέθοδο. Η ολοκλήρωση της διαδικασίας και η επιλογή του επενδυτή αναμένεται να γίνουν μέσα στο 2007.
5. Αναβάθμιση του αυτοκινητόδρομου Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού
σε 6 λωρίδες κυκλοφορίας μεταξύ των κόμβων Στροβόλου και Αλάμπρας
Το έργο αναμένεται να χρηματοδοτηθεί από το Ταμείο Συνοχής της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης για την περίοδο 2007-13. Η προσφοροδότηση του έργου προγραμματίζεται για το 2006 και η έναρξη τοποθετείται μέσα στο 2007. Το κόστος του έργου υπολογίζεται γύρω στα £16,0 εκ.
6. Περιμετρικός αυτοκινητόδρομος Λευκωσίας
Έχει ολοκληρωθεί η περιβαλλοντική/τεχνοοικονομική/συγκριτική μελέτη και αναμένεται έγκριση για προκήρυξη προσφορών για ανάθεση της μελέτης. Η έναρξη του έργου τοποθετείται το 2009.
7. Συνδετικός δρόμος Λιμανιού Λεμεσού
Το έργο βρίσκεται υπό μελέτην και η έναρξη των εργασιών αναμένεται το 2007. Το κόστος του έργου υπολογίζεται να είναι της τάξης των £12 εκ. και θα προταθεί για χρηματοδότηση από το Ταμείο Συνοχής της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης.
8. Αυτοκινητόδρομος Λευκωσίας-Παλαιχωρίου
Έχει ετοιμαστεί η τεχνοοικονομική και περιβαλλοντική μελέτη για την κατασκευή νέου δρόμου 4 λωρίδων κυκλοφορίας από Ανθούπολη μέχρι την πρόσβαση Καλού Χωριού, μήκους 18,5 χλμ. και στάληκε στην Περιβαλλοντική Αρχή στις αρχές του 2006 για έγκριση.
9. Αυτοκινητόδρομος Αστρομερίτη-Ευρύχου
Ετοιμάζεται τεχνοοικονομική και περιβαλλοντική μελέτη για κατασκευή του αυτοκινητόδρομου, μήκους 15 χλμ. περίπου, η οποία αναμένεται να ολοκληρωθεί περί τα μέσα του 2006.
10. Αυτοκινητόδρομος Λεμεσού-Σαϊττά
Ετοιμάζεται η τεχνοοικονομική/περιβαλλοντική/προκαταρκτική μελέτη για κατασκευή αυτοκινητόδρομου από τα Πολεμίδια μέχρι την πρόσβαση Σαϊττά, μήκους 24 χλμ. Η πιο πάνω μελέτη αναμένεται να ολοκληρωθεί στα μέσα του 2006. Ακολούθως, θα πρέπει να ετοιμαστούν τα κατασκευαστικά σχέδια, που υπολογίζεται να είναι έτοιμα σε 3 χρόνια από την ημερομηνία ανάθεσης των μελετών.

3. Επαρχιακό Δικαστήριο Λεμεσού (υπόγειος χώρος στάθμευσης): Προωθήθηκαν οι προσφορές για κατασκευή υπόγειων χώρων στάθμευσης έναντι δαπάνης £2,0 εκ. και η έναρξη εργασιών θα γίνει το Μάρτιο 2006.
4. Αστυνομικός Σταθμός Πέρα Χωρίου Νήσου: Βρίσκεται σε διαδικασία προσφορών και αναμένεται να αρχίσει τον Απρίλιο του 2006 έναντι δαπάνης £1,0 εκ. περίπου.

ΝΕΟ ΚΤΙΡΙΟ ΥΠΟΥΡΓΕΙΟΥ ΑΜΥΝΑΣ

Α’ ΒΡΑΒΕΙΟ
ΧΡΥΣΑΝΘΟΣ ΧΡΥΣΑΝΘΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΗΡΑΚΛΗΣ ΠΑΠΑΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ

Ο χώρος επέμβασης ορίζεται σε ένα καθαρά αστικό τοπίο πάνω σε έναν από τους σημαντικότερους οδικούς άξονες της πόλης, ο οποίος λόγω των ιδιαίτερων απαιτήσεων του κτιριολογικού προγράμματος, αλλά και του ίδιου του μεγέθους του, απαιτεί πολεοδομική σύνταξη το ίδιο καθαυτό. Το κτιριακό σύμπλεγμα πρέπει να χαρακτηρίζεται και να διακρίνεται ως σημείο αναφοράς στο αρχιτεκτονικό τοπίο της πρωτεύουσας. Μέσα από απλές αλλά και μεγαλεπήβολες αρχιτεκτονικές χειρονομίες, αντάξιες των αξιών που αυτό πρεσβεύει να επιβάλλεται με την απλότητα και το κύρος του, εξασφαλίζοντας την εύρυθμη αλλά και ασφαλή λειτουργία του.

Κεντρική ιδέα. Ένας διαχωρισμός του οικοπέδου σε ζώνες και ενοποίησή τους με ένα γραμμικό αρθρωτικό στοιχείο πάνω στο οποίο και σε συνδυασμό με το περιεχόμενο των ζωνών συντάσσονται ιεραρχημένα οι κτιριακοί όγκοι.

Αρχιτεκτονική – Χωροταξική σύνθεση. Μέσα από τις απαιτήσεις του κτιριολογικού προγράμματος, τις νύξεις του τοπίου και τις αφορμές της αστικής λειτουργίας, έρχεται να αποκρυσταλλωθεί και να υλοποιηθεί η κεντρική ιδέα διαμέσου της αρχιτεκτονικής σύνθεσης.

Το συγκρότημα αναπτύσσει τη δική του πολεοδομική οργάνωση, μέσω της οποίας αυτοπροσδιορίζεται εν μέσω του αστικού ιστού. Δημιουργούνται τέσσερις ζώνες: 1. Νότια ζώνη κατά μήκος του μοναδικού συνόρου του οικοπέδου με άλλο οικόπεδο. 2. Δυτική ζώνη επί της Λεωφόρου Μακαρίου Γ’. 3. Ανατολική ζώνη επί της οδού Καλλιπόλεως 4. Ενδιάμεση ζώνη και 5. Ζώνη πρασίνου επί της οδού Εθνικής Φρουράς. Στη νότια ζώνη αναπτύσσεται ένας γραμμικός όγκος εν μέρει διαμπερής, που διατρέχει και αρθρώνει όλες τις ζώνες, με τις χρήσεις πορείας και στεγάστρου να εναλλάσσονται, και στο σημείο που εισέρχεται στη δυτική ζώνη στρέφεται παράλληλα με τη Λεωφόρο Μακαρίου, για να διαμορφώσει έναν διώροφο ημιυπαίθριο χώρο, πρόπυλου. Στη δυτική ζώνη και αμέσως πιο πίσω από το πρόπυλο αναπτύσσεται καθ’ ύψος με μορφή ορθογωνίου πρίσματος ο πυρήνας Α, που στεγάζει την ιεραρχία Υπουργείου Αμύνης και ΓΕΕΦ. Σε διαδοχή του πυρήνα Α συντάσσεται σε σχέση με τον γραμμικό όγκο και ο πυρήνας Β, με μορφή ορθογώνιου πρίσματος, σαφώς όμως χαμηλότερος από τον πυρήνα Α, στον οποίο στεγάζονται οι υπόλοιποι χώροι ΥΠΑΜ και ΓΕΕΦ. Στην ανατολική ζώνη, στο όριο του οικοπέδου με την οδό Εθνικής Φρουράς, ορίζεται ο χώρος για τη μελλοντική ανέγερση της λέσχης αξιωματικών σε σχέση με τη ζώνη πρασίνου.

ΔΗΜΟΤΙΚΟ ΘΕΑΤΡΟ ΠΑΦΟΥ

Α’ ΒΡΑΒΕΙΟ

Η ταύτιση της λειτουργικής επίλυσης του κτιρίου με τις αρχιτεκτονικές μας επιλογές αποτελεί σημαντικό γνώρισμα της πρότασής μας.

Οι επιμέρους λειτουργικές ενότητες συντάσσονται στο κτίριο σε ένα απλό λειτουργικό διάγραμμα το οποίο χαρακτηρίζεται από τη σαφήνεια στο διαχωρισμό των ενοτήτων, την καθαρότητα και την εύκολη αναγνωσιμότητα των χώρων και την οικονομία και απλότητα στις οριζόντιες και κατακόρυφες κυκλοφορίες. Οι λειτουργικές ενότητες σηματοδοτούνται και αναδεικνύονται μορφολογικά στο χώρο με σαφήνεια.

Οι δημόσιοι χώροι του θεάτρου (είσοδος, φουαγιέ, καφετέρια ), συνθέτουν μια μεγάλη διαμπερή χωρική ενότητα που αποτελεί τη συνέχεια των εξωτερικών δημόσιων χώρων του κτιρίου και κατ’ επέκταση και του ευρύτερου αστικού χώρου. Στη διαμπερή αυτή ενότητα αντιπαραβάλλονται οι συμπαγείς ενότητες των σκηνών και των χώρων υποστήριξης – παρασκηνίων, που αποτελούν ταυτόχρονα το όριο προς τον υφιστάμενο οικιστικό ιστό.

Οι δύο σκηνές τοποθετούνται στο ίδιο επίπεδο με τους χώρους υποστήριξης, έτσι ώστε να εξυπηρετούνται άμεσα και εύκολα από αυτούς.

we didnrt appoint her,she won the competition.
according to cypriot constitution no project can be given directly to an architect,there must be a competition for it.
this was the point of a big debate last autumn,bc the cypriot minister of education and culture wanted to directly ask from a famous architect to design the new archaeological museum in nicosia but it could not be approved since there must be a competition for it.

zaha hadid redesigned eleftheria square,kohn pedersen the new parliament and the new lyric stage(megaro lyrikis mousikis).

the question is WHEN will they build them......

Uggh, I agree, these designs are not so nice.
I hope Kypros does not become too dominated by giant hotel complexes like you find in every other country. I hate them! They are artificial feeling, too generic.

Dunno if this has been brought up before, but there is a fantastic development (now essentially completed) just outside of Paphos called Aphrodite Hills. It includes real estate (villas, town houses, apartments), a village with shops and restaurants, a 5 star hotel, a tennis academy, a championship-standard golf course, a spa etc etc:

Another cypriot company is awarded a major project abroad...

Based on the data provided by the tender commission for the evaluation and selection of the most favorable offer, the executive board commission of Serbian Railways has decided to award the contract for authorizing the legal right for using and building commercial space in the Belgrade's Prokop railway station to "Trigranit Holding Company LTD" from Cyprus.

Three offers were discussed, but one of them, submitted by “Pavlovic Nagle Consortium", did not satisfy all the necessary criteria that were asked for in auction’s documentation. The domestic company, Energoprojekt, and Trigranit Holding from Cyprus fufilled all the terms required, but the commission chose Trigranit as the winner after carefully analyzing the financial offerings and reference comparisons. The contract will be signed within 60 days and the construction works should be completed within three years. The investment will be worth at least 200 million Euros.

As a result, Belgrade will have a completely new and modern railway station. At the same time, improved conditions will be made for more effective traffic across Corridor 10.

During the first working phase, 128000 square metres of residential-office space should be built ontop of the reinforced-concrete sheet that stands on the section known as Altitude 105 of the new railway station for passenger transport. At the same time, 10 000 square meters of commercial space within the station. This phase also includes building the accompanying infrastructure that will connect the Station with other transportation links in the area.

The second phase of construction will require building another 150000 to 170000 squared metres of business space among the Prokop complex. The value of entire Prokop complex will be significantly over a billion dollars.

Moving the main railway station to the new location will provide around 80 hectares of free space close to the Sava river that is prime real estate. That area would be offered to the investors according to market trade conditions so that it could become the most important business, cultural, commercial, and tourist center in this part of Europe, and also very important source of income for Serbia.

Επένδυση άνω των £10 εκατ. της Wonderworld Cyprus στο Μαρώνι

ΜΕΤΑ από πέντε χρόνια μελέτης, το πρώτο θεματικό πάρκο της Κύπρου περνά στο στάδιο της υλοποίησης, καθώς η εταιρεία Wonderworld Cyprus, στην οποία μετέχουν Κύπριοι, Αμερικανοί και άλλοι επενδυτές, έχει προχωρήσει στην εξασφάλιση της πολεοδομικής άδειας και έχει συγκεντρώσει το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του απαιτούμενου κεφαλαίου.
Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες του «Φ» το πρώτο θεματικό πάρκο θα κατασκευαστεί στην περιοχή Μαρωνίου, σε γη που κατέχει ήδη η εταιρεία Wonderworld Cyprus και το κόστος της επένδυσης ξεπερνά τα £10 εκατ.
Το θεματικό πάρκο, θα έχει ως θέμα του την παράδοση της Κύπρου, κάτι που συνάδει πλήρως με την εκτίμηση της κοινοπραξίας ManSystems Business Consultant s και JBR Hellas Business Consultants, που διενήργησε πρόσφατα μελέτη για ανάπτυξη θεματικών πάρκων για λογαριασμό του ΚΟΤ. Το σχεδιασμό του θεματικού πάρκου εκπόνησε αμερικάνικη εταιρεία για λογαριασμό της Wonderworld Cyprus και βασίζεται πάνω σε ένα μίγμα παραδοσιακών στοιχείων της Κύπρου, αφού σε αυτό θα ανεγερθούν μικρά μουσεία για την παράδοση και την ιστορία του νησιού. Σε ένα από τα μουσεία θα φιλοξενηθεί πανομοιότυπο του «Κερύνεια Ι». Επίσης θα συμπεριληφθούν χώροι κατασκευής λευκαρίτικων κεντημάτων και παρασκευής κυπριακών προϊόντων όπως ο σουτζιούκκος, ενώ παράλληλα λόγω του πολυδιάστατου του έργου, θα υπάρχουν σε αυτό εστιατόρια, χώροι εκδηλώσεων και υδροπάρκο.
Αξίζει να αναφερθεί πως το εν λόγω έργο θα αποτελέσει το ένα και μοναδικό μεγάλο θεματικό πάρκο που θα αποκτήσει η Κύπρος, αφού όπως προέκυψε από τη μελέτη που διενεργήθηκε πρόσφατα για τον ΚΟΤ, η υπάρχουσα ζήτηση, αλλά και το μέγεθος του τουριστικού προορισμού δεν επιτρέπουν τη δημιουργία περισσότερων του ενός θεματικού πάρκου στο νησί.
Η δημιουργία του θεματικού πάρκου θα διαφοροποιήσει και θα αναβαθμίσει το υφιστάμενο τουριστικό προϊόν εξυπηρετώντας κάποιες από τις ανάγκες και απαιτήσεις των στοχευμένων τμημάτων αγοράς, τόσο του διεθνούς όσο και του εγχώριου τουρισμού. Σημειώνεται ότι διεθνώς από το 1990, ο αριθμός θεματικών πάρκων έχει αυξηθεί εντυπωσιακά σε όλον τον κόσμο (σύνολο 366) και ιδιαίτερα στην Ασία όπου σήμερα υπάρχουν 127 πάρκα

Στα πλαίσια της προσπάθειας για ανοικοδόμηση και εκσυγχρονισμό της Λευκωσίας, το Υπουργείο Συγκοινωνιών σε συνεργασία με το Δήμο Λευκωσίας ετοιμάζουν σχέδια εκμετάλλευσης του χώρου του παλιού ΓΣΠ. Ο χώρος θα περιλαμβάνει υπόγειο χώρο στάθμευσης, αστική πλατεία, καθώς και ένα πλήθος κατασκευών. Ο ακριβής σχεδιασμός του όλου χώρου θα αποφασιστεί με αρχιτεκτονικό διαγωνισμό. Αντικείμενο του διαγωνισμού θα είναι η σωστή χωροθέτηση των διαφόρων κατασκευών και οι εργασίες αναμένεται να ξεκινήσουν εντός του 2007. Για τις ανάγκες και την ορθότητα του έργου έχουν γίνει ανασκαφές από το Τμήμα Αρχαιοτήτων, έχει γίνει κυκλοφοριακή και γεωλογική μελέτη, και βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη τεχνοοικονομική μελέτη. Το όλο έργο αναμένεται να ολοκληρωθεί τρία περίπου χρόνια από την έναρξή του και θα στοιχίσει περίπου £17 εκατομμύρια.
Ο χώρος θα φιλοξενήσει στο άμεσο μέλλον ένα διώροφο υπόγειο χώρο στάθμευσης, ο οποίος θα δώσει λύση στο πρόβλημα του χώρου στάθμευσης στην περιοχή, καθώς και καταστήματα. Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες που έδωσε στη «Σ» η Μαρκέλλα Χατζηδά, λειτουργός του Τμήματος Πολεοδομίας, γίνονται προσπάθειες ενίσχυσης και ανάπλασης του σημαντικού αστικού χώρου μεταξύ της περιοχής του παλιού ΓΣΠ και της Λεωφόρου Γρίβα Διγενή, που αποτελεί και πολυλειτουργικό κέντρο της πρωτεύουσας. Στη γενικότερη περιοχή θα ανεγερθούν μεταξύ άλλων: Η νέα Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων, το Κρατικό Θέατρο, η Αρχιγραμματεία, η οποία θα χρησιμοποιείται για πολιτισμικές χρήσεις και χρήσεις αναψυχής, και το Μέγαρο Πολιτισμού Κύπρου. Η πρώτη φάση του σχεδίου έχει ήδη ολοκληρωθεί με το Υπουργείο Οικονομικών.

Πλήρης μεταμόρφωση της περιοχής

Ο χώρος του παλιού ΓΣΠ, τον τελευταίο καιρό έχει μετατραπεί σε χώρο στάθμευσης 500 περίπου αυτοκινήτων. Το γεγονός ότι πλημμυρίζει από αυτοκίνητα, δείχνει, ενδεχομένως, ότι υπάρχει πρόβλημα στο χώρο στάθμευσης της περιοχής. Λύση στο πρόβλημα αυτό αναμένεται να φέρει η κατασκευή ενός διώροφου χώρου στάθμευσης, χωρητικότητας περίπου 1600 αυτοκινήτων. Επιπρόσθετα θα λύσει κάποια κυκλοφοριακά προβλήματα, που εμφανίστηκαν στην περιοχή μετά τη χωροθέτηση του Υπουργείου Οικονομικών και άλλων λειτουργιών, και θα βοηθήσει επίσης και στη γενική εικόνα του χώρου. Πρόσβαση στο χώρο στάθμευσης θα υπάρχει στη Λεωφόρο Γρηγόρη Αυξεντίου και την οδό Βασιλέως Παύλου. Η κυκλοφοριακή μελέτη που έγινε δείχνει ότι, παρά την αύξηση του κυκλοφοριακού που αναμένεται να προκληθεί στην περιοχή μετά την κατασκευή του νέου αυτού έργου, οι χώροι στάθμευσης θα καλύψουν τις ανάγκες. Κατά τη διάρκεια της κατασκευής του έργου, όμως, αναμένονται προβλήματα χώρου στάθμευσης, για τα οποία γίνονται προσπάθειες επίλυσης.

Μεγάλη αστική πλατεία

ΑΠΟ το γενικό χωροταξικό, προβλέπεται και η κατασκευή μιας μεγάλης αστικής πλατείας πρωτοφανούς μεγέθους για τα κυπριακά δεδομένα. Η κατασκευή της πλατείας θα γίνει στο χώρο του στίβου και θα διακοσμηθεί με χορτοτάπητα, καθιστικές επιφάνειες, καφετερίες και εστιατόρια. Η νέα αυτή πλατεία θα συνδέεται με την πλατεία Ελευθερίας, μέσω της Λεωφόρου Ευαγόρου. Προσπάθειες θα γίνουν και για τη διατήρηση της μνήμης του χώρου, παράλληλα με την ανάπτυξή του, το οποίο είναι κατασκευής 1902. Η διατήρηση της μνήμης του ΓΣΠ αναμένεται να επιτευχθεί με τη διατήρηση των βορειοανατολικών κερκίδων ως μέρους ενός αμφιθέατρου και με την κατασκευή ενός μουσείου. Το αμφιθέατρο θα περιλαμβάνει οθόνη και θα χρησιμοποιηθεί ως χώρος για υπαίθριες παραστάσεις. Πέραν της πλατείας και του αμφιθεάτρου, θα κατασκευαστούν και περιορισμένης κλίμακας κτίρια αναψυχής (2.5 τετ. χλμ πολιτιστικές κατασκευές και 2.5 τετ. χλμ εμπορικές), κατά μήκος της Λεωφόρου Γρηγόρη Αυξεντίου.

Η Στατιστική Υπηρεσία ανακοινώνει ότι ο αριθμός των αδειών οικοδομής που εκδόθηκαν από τις δημοτικές αρχές και τις επαρχιακές διοικήσεις κατά το μήνα Φεβρουάριο 2006 ανήλθε στις 853. Η συνολική αξία των αδειών αυτών έφθασε τα £111,9 εκατομμύρια και το συνολικό εμβαδόν τις 265,8 χιλιάδες τετραγωνικά μέτρα. Με τις άδειες αυτές προβλέπεται να ανεγερθούν 1.481 οικιστικές μονάδες.

Κατά την περίοδο Ιανουαρίου – Φεβρουαρίου 2006 εκδόθηκαν 1.628 άδειες οικοδομής, παρουσιάζοντας άνοδο 6,3% έναντι της αντίστοιχης περιόδου του προηγούμενου έτους. Η συνολική αξία των αδειών αυτών αυξήθηκε κατά 3,6% ενώ το συνολικό εμβαδόν μειώθηκε κατά 1,3%. Ο αριθμός των οικιστικών μονάδων παρουσίασε πτώση της τάξης του 0,9%.

Οι άδειες οικοδομής συνιστούν σημαντική ένδειξη για τη μελλοντική δραστηριότητα στον κατασκευαστικό τομέα

Μήπως μπορεί κάποιος να ενημερώσει σχετικά με το Ολυμπιακό Μέγαρο της Κυπριακής Ολυμπιακής Επιτροπής; Φαίνεται να είναι μία πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ανάπτυξη αλλά λεπτομέρειες για το στάδιο κατασκευής ή φωτογραφίες δεν βρήκα πουθενά αλλού εκτός της παρούσας συζήτησης. Ευχαριστώ.

there is already a new business center being formed at the entrance of nicosia from the limassol-nicosia motorway.
in this new business area the following companies have their headquarters: laiki trapeza,elliniki trapeza (both have really nice buildings,laiki has a very modern one and elliniki a more conservative one but still very nice), cypriot olympic comittee ,which is almost complete(i posted the designs of this one in the other thread about cyprus) , louis tours(owner of several cruiseliners and hotels in both greece and cyprus) and the headquarters of the cypriot electricity authority....

Όντως η συγκεκριμένη περιοχή έχει πολλές προοπτικές με όλα αυτά τα σύγχρονα κτήρια . Να μια άποψη του κτηρίου της Λαϊκής αν δεν απατώμαι τράπεζας

First stone laid on new airport

‘42 months from now we will have a new and modern terminal building’

HERMES Group chairman Nicos Shacolas yesterday pledged that the new Larnaca Airport, capable of handling 7.5 million passengers a year would be completed on time in 2009.

Shacolas was speaking at a ceremony to mark the laying of the foundation stone for the new terminal building, 31 years after Larnaca airport became the island’s main entry point in the wake of the Turkish invasion.

“We will honour the contract that we have signed with the government of the Cyprus Republic down to the last detail and in three and a half years without any delays we will all be here again to inaugurate the new airport and for that we can feel proud,” said Shacolas.

Shacolas said that 6,000 people would be permanently employed at the new airports. He also said that over the next three and a half years around 2,000 people would be working on the construction of the new terminal.

The foundation stone was laid jointly with President Tassos Papadopoulos as dignitaries and diplomats joined officials for the historic occasion.

“Forty-two months from now we will have a new and modern terminal building that will further contribute to Cyprus’ development, offering the island a special place in the eastern Mediterranean region”, Papadopoulos said.

He said it was the government’s most important project so far and would make Cyprus an even more important player in air transport in the region.

Harking back to 1974 when Nicosia Airport came under UN control, Papadopouolos said: “Seven months after the disaster, we built Larnaca Airport as a temporary solution. The first year, 200,000 passengers used the airport and today, 31 years after, it serves around five million passengers a year”, he said. Larnaca is only designed to accept 2.5 million passengers a year as it stands.

Phase one of the new airport will see Larnaca capable of handing nine million passengers. Papadopoulos said phase one, which would also include the upgrade at Paphos would cost 500 million euros.

The total cost including construction plans and provision for future extension comes to around 643 million euros.

The project is being carried out under the Build Operate Transfer (BOT) system where Hermes will construct the airport and run it for 25 years.

Communications and Works Minister Harris Thrassou said that after 18 months of negotiations the agreement with Hermes was signed on May 11 this year.

Under the agreement the government will receive 33 per cent of the gross income from the company and an additional 3.5 million euros every year, Thrassou said.

He said the area of the building to be constructed during the first phase would be 95,000 square metres and will serve 7.5 million passengers a year. The second phase would increase the area to 112.000 square metres with a capacity of nine million passengers a year, Thrassou said.

Papadopoulos also paid tribute to former Communications and Works Minister, now opposition DISY vice chairman Averoff Neophytou for his insistence and determination that a BOT project was the right road to take in constructing a new airport, despite the prevailing opposition at the time.
The project will see the construction of two passenger terminals at both airports, featuring VIP and CIP (Commercially Important Persons) halls, CCTV, and the CUTE (Common Use Terminal Equipment) system

This allows an airport to organise efficient gate and check-in counter allocations and system management. The changes transform the two airports into fully modern facilities, with walkways leading passengers directly from the new terminals to the plane.

The project has however had its share of controversy. Talks with the initial successful bidder, the Alterra/Cybarco consortium, broke down and the contract was later awarded by default to the next in line bidder, Hermes.

Hermes participants include Charilaos Apostolides, the Shacolas group CTC, Egis Projects and Iacovou Brothers, together with Ireland’s Aer Rianta International, and French interests Bouygues Batiment and the Chambre de Commerce et D'Industrie Nice Cote D'Azur.

Two of the rejected bidders then claimed irregularities in the tender process, with one of the trying to freeze the signing of the agreement. A motion by Alterra/Cybarco for an interim order to put the agreement on hold while its allegations were being investigated was rejected by the Tenders’ Review Authority.

The second rejected bidder, the J&P-led consortium, has lodged a complaint with the European Commission, alleging that the deal was tailor-made to suit Hermes’ interests and disqualify all of its competitors.
The European Commission found there were grounds to investigate the allegations and informed the government last November. It emerged during the negotiations with Hermes, that the government decided to take over security at the airports, ostensibly for national security reasons. But the European Commission said this might constitute a substantive alteration of the terms of the agreement.

According to EU law and directives, any essential change to a government procurement contract means the tender must be scrapped and bidders invited to submit their offers all over again.

The government however has forged ahead, worried that more delays could set the project back until 2013.

Duty-free shops head for Hermes control

CYPRUS Airways (CY) will relinquish the operation of the duty-free shops at Larnaca and Paphos Airports on June 30, after a ten-year stint the airline announced yesterday.

“It is widely known that the administration of the Larnaca and Paphos airports has been undertaken recently by Hermes joint venture, which has the right to operate the airport spaces,” a CY statement to the Cyprus Stock Exchange said.

CY said it wanted to thank passengers for their support in the past ten years and that CY products would still be available during flights.

The operation both airports has been taken over by the Hermes group, the consortium that is going to build a new airport at Larnaca and upgrade the one in Paphos.

The government handed over the running of the duty-free shops to CY in 1996 as a means to give indirect aid to the national carrier, which turned out to be a phenomenally successful source of income for the airline until Cyprus joined the EU in May 2004.

From that date passengers travelling within the bloc could not longer purchase goods on a duty-free basis.

In 2005, revenue from the duty free shops fell to £39.3 million, resulting in a pre-tax loss of £124,000, compared to a profit of £3.8 million in 2004, when revenue dropped by £12.4 million as a result of accession.

Last year’s loss was the first-ever that CY sustained during its 10-year operation of the shops. Profits from the duty free shops peaked in 2002 when the company recorded a pre-tax figure of £7.1 million.

According to the Ministry of Finance, a recent report by Standard and Poor’s rating and research agency ranks Cyprus first in terms of “fiscal flexibility” among 28 European countries.

The report ranks the 25 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, in a 2006 fiscal flexibility index.

Cyprus is ranked first, followed by Switzerland and Ireland--also two comparatively small states.

The index allows for cross country comparisons of government’s ability to adjust to adverse economic trends and to react swiftly and effectively in the wake of economic shocks, by modifying tax and expenditure policies in a way that safeguards smooth debt service payments.

While Cyprus leads marginally thanks to the high degree of revenue flexibility afforded by its exceptionally low tax rate regime, flexibility in Switzerland and Ireland stems from both the revenue and the expenditure sides, CNA reports.

It adds that the Cypriot economy is highly dependent on its tax regime to provide a distinctive appeal to foreign investors.

Cyprus rapidly reduced its budget deficit from 6.3% of GDP in 2003 to around 2.5% of GDP in 2005.

Its corporate tax rate on non-governmental companies is the lowest in Europe at 10%.

Christis shares soar on Delta bid talk

Christis Dairies Pcl shares soared double limit-up or 32% on Friday to 18.2 cent per share on the CSE following reports that Delta S.A. of Greece is seeking to buy Christis from the Shacolas Group and CTC and submit a public offer for the whole of the company.

Delta, which has a 54.9% stake in Cyprus’ third largest dairies company, Charalambides Dairies is reported by the Greek press to be the group “from the EU” which is negotiating with NK Shacolas and Cyprus Trading Corp. Pcl for their majority share in Christis.

Late Thursday, NK Shacolas and Cyprus Trading Corp. Pcl announced that they are at advanced stage of negotiations to sell their stake in Christis Dairies Pcl to a company based in the EU for cash, at a price significantly higher than its current price traded on the CSE.

Following the sharp rally in the share price of Christis, the market capitalisation of the company surged to CYP 10 mln from CYP 6 mln prior to the announcement of the deal according to Financial Mirror calculations.

Based on the 28 cent book value, Christis would be valued at CYP 15 mln.

"The sale of the stake, after the final negotiations are hammered out, will be through a public tender offer for the whole capital of Christis, provided that the relevant authorities of the Republic of Cyprus approve the deal," an official announcement by NK Shacolas filed with the CSE said.

Shareholders of Christis are urged to have patience until the whole deal is wrapped up in the next few weeks, which may not be concluded, the NK Shacolas announcement cautioned.

Christis has a total issued share capital of 54.7 mln shares of 25 cent each with a book value estimated at around 28 cent per share according to its most recent accounts.

The Shacolas Group of Companies and the CTC Group hold a 45.81% controlling stake in Christis, or 25.092.159 shares.

Christis has had a mediocre performance. After reporting net profit of CYP 432.000 in 2003, the company reported CYP 761.000 net loss for 2004, while in 2005 it reported CYP 106.000 in net profit.

Britain’s best-paid woman moves her base to Cyprus

THE highest-paid woman in Britain, hedge-fund manager Elena Ambrosiadou of Ikos Partners, is relocating to Cyprus.
Ambrosiadou, who has an estimated wealth of £200m, according to the Sunday Times Rich List, is quitting London because she believes Cyprus offers a better environment in which to grow the business.

A spokesman for Ikos said: “Elena has a five-year strategic plan to grow the assets under management from $2.8 billion (£1.5 billion) at the moment to $10 billion by 2010.

“Cyprus offers a good environment in which to do this. There is a more benign tax environment, a highly talented English-speaking workforce, and it is closer to Middle Eastern investors.”

Ambrosiadou started Ikos, which means “home” in Greek, in 1992 as one of the first hedge funds set up in London.

Since then, the flagship Financial fund has generated a total return of 144.4% and an annualised return of 10.2%.

According to documents filed at Companies House, Ambrosiadou, 46, the only director of Ikos, was paid a total of £15.9m last financial year.

She quietly built Ikos into one of the most successful hedge funds in the world from an office near Tower Bridge in the east of the City.

But as of July 1, Ikos’s head office is in Cyprus, regulated by the Cyprus Securities & Exchange Commission. The firm will keep its Brighton research office, but London will be used only as a base for meetings.

ΚΑΤA τις επόμενες μέρες αρχίζουν τα έργα κατασκευής γέφυρας μέσα στο φράγμα Γερμασόγειας για αλλαγή της όδευσης ενός μικρού σχετικά τμήματος του δρόμου που οδηγεί στην Aκρούντα, προκειμένου να επιλυθεί οριστικά το πρόβλημα που παρουσιάζεται με τις κατολισθήσεις βράχων με όλους τους συνεπαγόμενους κίνδυνους για τα διερχόμενα οχήματα. Στο πλαίσιο προώθησης του έργου υπογράφηκαν στην παρουσία του Υπουργού Συγκοινωνιών Χάρη Θράσου, τα σχετικά συμβόλαια εκ μέρους της κυβέρνησης από τον Διευθυντή του Τμήματος Δημοσίων Έργων Στάθη Xαμπουλλά και από τον Κυριάκο Χρυσοχόο εκ μέρους της εταιρείας «NEMEΣIΣ εργοληπτική δημόσια εταιρεία Λτδ», που θα αναλάβει την εκτέλεση των εργασιών. H έναρξη των κατασκευαστικών έργων θα είναι άμεση και σύμφωνα με τους υπολογισμούς και όρους που έχουν τεθεί από τους αρμοδίους θα συμπληρωθούν σε χρονικό διάστημα 78 εβδομάδων από την ημέρα έναρξής τους. Tο κόστος της γέφυρας που θα κατασκευαστεί αναμένεται ότι θα ανέλθει περίπου στο £1,4εκ. ΠΟΛΛΑ εναλλακτικά σενάρια για το θέμα της δημιουργίας καζίνο στην Κύπρο περιλαμβάνει η μελέτη που εκπονήθηκε από ξένο οίκο για λογαριασμό του ΚΟΤ και η οποία βρίσκεται ήδη στα χέρια των αρμόδιων λειτουργών του υπουργείου Εμπορίου. Την ολοκλήρωση της μελέτης επιβεβαίωσε με δηλώσεις του στον «Φ» ο αρμόδιος Υπουργός Αντώνης Μιχαηλίδης, ο οποίος, κάνει πλέον λόγο για επίσπευση των διαδικασιών και κατάληξη σε χρονικό διάστημα πολύ πιο σύντομα απ' ό,τι αρχικά προβλεπόταν. Όπως ανέφερε ο κ. Μιχαηλίδης, «στη μελέτη ο ξένος οίκος παρουσιάζει διάφορες εναλλακτικές επιλογές και μοντέλα καζίνο για τα οποία παραθέτει μάλιστα και ξεχωριστά αναλυτικά στοιχεία σχετικά με τις διάφορες κοινωνικές επιπτώσεις που πιθανόν να προκύψουν, αλλά και τις τουριστικές και οικονομικές τους πτυχές». Κληθείς να αναφέρει μερικές από τις εναλλακτικές επιλογές και μοντέλα καζίνο που παρουσιάζονται στη μελέτη, ο υπουργός Εμπορίου, περιορίστηκε να πει πως τα μοντέλα που προτείνονται είναι αρκετά και πως «εναπόκειται σε εμάς να αποφασίσουμε, αφού δεν γίνεται υπόδειξη με απόλυτη θέση». Παράλληλα ανέφερε ότι το ζήτημα έχει οικονομικές και κοινωνικές πτυχές που μελετώνται σε βάθος και πως η κυβέρνηση βρίσκεται σε προχωρημένο στάδιο ώστε να καταλήξει σε κάποια συμπεράσματα.
Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες του «Φ» στη μελέτη γίνεται λόγος για τη δημιουργία συνολικά έξι καζίνο στην Κύπρο, τα οποία θα λειτουργήσουν ένα σε κάθε επαρχία και ένα στις ορεινές περιοχές. Επισημαίνεται πως για τη δημιουργία καζίνο στην Κύπρο έχουν ενδιαφερθεί ανοικτά πολλοί επιχειρηματίες, κυρίως του τουριστικού κλάδου, οι οποίοι μετά την παράδοση της μελέτης από τον ξένο οίκο ετοιμάζουν την επιχειρηματολογία για τη διεκδίκησή τους.
Την ίδια ώρα, και ο ΚΟΤ έχει αρχίσει την προετοιμασία της επιχειρηματολογίας του σε μια προσπάθεια να στηρίξει τη διαδικασία δημιουργίας των καζίνο και την εξάλειψη των όποιων ανησυχιών εκδηλωθούν σχετικά με μια τέτοια εξέλιξη. Η μελέτη θα αποτελέσει το «βαρύ όπλο» του ΚΟΤ, καθώς πλέον μπορεί πιο εύκολα να στηρίξει τα επιχειρήματά του, στους επικριτές της ιδέας δημιουργίας καζίνο στην Κύπρο, αναφέρουν σχετικές πηγές.

i also took a pic of an unknown construction site in nicosia city center,nobody knows what they will build there yet.

Nice projects!

About the second picture... is that the unknown construction site you're talking about? I believe that site is in a very interesting part of town, with the Starbucks tower across the street, as well as the beautiful Arab Bank building, and the 1980s-style Societe General building right next door. So I hope they build something good there, because that will really add a lot visually to the area. Also, if you go to Costa Cafe on the same street, right behind the cafe you'll see a very impressive office building under construction, I believe it's almost finished. If you could take some pics that would be great!

Finally, where is the building in the last pic going to be built? It reminds me of a one of the luxury apartment towers currently being built in Dallas, TX... Good stuff, although I think Nicosia has too many apartments...

the project is by lois builders but there is no advertisment about the building and their website has not been updated in ages.
for the building behind costa i have already posted a pic,i will try to repost it.
the building is completed but not all floors are occupied which is very strange.
the project in the last pic is also a few meters away from costa cafe,i have seen a few renders of it in a magazine,i was not impressed.it is supposed to be two buildings,one with 11 floors(on the main street) ,the other with 9 floors(at the back street).
there is another project under construction at makariou avenue ,but for that one too is impossible to find any info.

Interesting, thanks for the info.

But if the building behind Costa is finished, what's with the weird cement look? I mean, the last time I saw it (summer July 06), the exterior did not look finished, as it was just pure concrete (grey), no paint or fake stone (as many new office bulidings have in Nicosia)... I like the design, but if that's the final look, then it's disgusting.

Europa Monument to be created in Nicosia park

Nicosia will get a new monument within the next two years when the vision of Sculptor Theodoulos Gregoriou is finally realised. Gregoriou recently won a competition qhich will see his futuristic design brought to life as the focal point of the parkland at the entrance to Nicosia ( ear the junction before the Hilton Hotel). The design is a capsul shape made of glass & steel which will feature a 60m x 3m water fall against which images will be projected via a concealed electronic device. The images will be of current events & will be visible both from the inside & the outside of the capsule.

Revitalisation of Old Nicosia Continues

The former cinemas, the Palace and the Regina in downtown Nicosia, will be renovated. The Palace will be refurbished utilising investment from EU Structural Funds at a cost of 1.6 million CYP. On completion it will become the Capitals cultural centre, housing the Cyprus State Orchestra, as well as a Concert Hall, Cinema and lecture / conference halls. The work should be completed by November 2007. The Regina will be renovated using funding supplied by local businessman Takis Kazolides. It is going to be used as a Boutique Hotel providing restaurants and a Night Club as well as Hotel facilities.

Το Υπουργικό έδωσε το πράσινο φως για την ανέγερση Θεάτρου ΘΟΚ

Τη στιγμή που ελπίδες για την ανέγερση του Θεάτρου ΘΟΚ άρχισαν να εξανεμίζονται, το Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο με μια απόφαση-αστραπή άνοιξε εκ νέου το κεφάλαιο το οποίο θα κλείσει αυτή τη φορά όταν το κτίριο ολοκληρωθεί. Αρχίζουμε πάραυτα δουλειά για το μεγάλο αυτό έργο, δήλωσε χθες στον «Φ» ο διευθυντής του Οργανισμού Άντυς Παρτζίλης. Δηλαδή μέχρι τέλος Ιανουαρίου θα προκηρυχθούν προσφορές για την ανέγερση του κτιρίου, ενώ αναμένεται οι εργασίες να αρχίσουν γύρω στο τέλος του ερχόμενου καλοκαιριού με στόχο να ολοκληρωθούν τέλη του 2009 με αρχές του 2010. Η απόφαση αυτή ουσιαστικά υλοποιεί τη δέσμευση τόσο του προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας Τάσου Παπαδόπουλου όσο και του προέδρου της Βουλής Δημήτρη Χριστόφια.
Η προχθεσινή απόφαση του Υπουργικού Συμβουλίου ουσιαστικά καλύπτει τα ερωτηματικά που άφηνε η προηγούμενη απόφασή του για το τελικό κόστος. Αυτό αναμένεται να είναι γύρω στα 8 με 9 εκατομμύρια.
Ιστορική αναδρομή
Ο Θεατρικός Οργανισμός Κύπρου από το 1976 κατέβαλε συνεχείς προσπάθειες για ν' αποκτήσει ιδιόκτητο συγκρότημα που να πληροί τις απαιτήσεις λειτουργίας του. ΄Ετσι εκπονήθηκε κτιριολογικό πρόγραμμα από τον Θ.Ο.Κ. για προκήρυξη Παγκύπριου Αρχιτεκτονικού Διαγωνισμού για ένα χώρο υψηλών προδιαγραφών τόσο σε αρχιτεκτονική έκφραση όσο και λειτουργικότητα με ειδική αναφορά σε ένα ζωντανό αυτοδύναμο θεατρικό κέντρο με ειδικούς θεατρικούς χώρους.
Μετά από περιπέτειες για εξεύρεση του χώρου όπου θα στεγαζόταν το Κρατικό Θέατρο, το Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο και οι πολεοδόμοι κατέληξαν σε συγκεκριμένο χώρο του παλαιού Γ.Σ.Π. στο κέντρο της Λευκωσίας και το ενέταξαν στο «Μάστερ Πλαν» της Λευκωσίας, κοντά στο νέο κτιρίο της Βουλής και στα πολιτιστικά κέντρα τα οποία θα χωροθετηθούν μελλοντικά στον ίδιο χώρο.
Τον Αύγουστο 2002 προκηρύχθηκε Παγκύπριος Αρχιτεκτονικός Διαγωνισμός, με 25 συμμετοχές. Το Α΄Βραβείο δόθηκε στο Αρχιτεκτονικό Γραφείο Δ.Κυθρεώτης & Συνεργάτες με το ακόλουθο σκεπτικό
« Κρίνοντας στην ολότητα την πρόταση αυτή η Επιτροπή θεωρεί ότι ο μελετητής έχει καταφέρει σε μέγιστο βαθμό να ανταποκριθεί στις απαιτήσεις του Διαγωνισμού και να προσφέρει υψηλής ποιότητας αρχιτεκτονική κατάλληλη για ένα τόσο σημαντικό δημόσιο κτίριο». Αν και τα αρχιτεκτονικά σχέδια και το κονδύλι για την ανέγερση του κρατικού θεάτρου είχαν εγκριθεί, υπήρχε ένα κενό ως προς το κόστος του κτιρίου και παρεμβάλλονταν διάφορα προβλήματα που εμπόδιζαν την άμεση έναρξη των εργασιών για την ολοκλήρωσή του.
Το νέο κτίριο
Το βασικότερο μέλημα κατά το σχεδιασμό ενός θεάτρου πρέπει να είναι η σχέση θεατή-ηθοποιού, αμφιθεάτρου και σκηνής, όταν μάλιστα το θέατρο προορίζεται να εξυπηρετήσει το Δράμα που έχει σαν πρωταρχικό σκοπό την ανάπτυξη του λόγου, η σχέση αυτή είναι καθοριστική στην εσωτερική μορφολογία του, αναφέρει ο αρχιτέκτονας Μίμης Κυθρεώτης. Εκτός από τις συμβατικές απαιτήσεις άνεσης, ποιοτικής και ακουστικής επάρκειας πρέπει κυρίως να εκπληρώνεται το αίσθημα στους θεατές ότι βρίσκονται σε οικείο θεατρικό περιβάλλον και η επιθυμία θεατή-ηθοποιού για επικοινωνία και ταύτιση, ταύτιση του θεατή με τα δρώμενα και τις συναισθηματικές καταστάσεις του ηθοποιού, επικοινωνία του ηθοποιού με το θεατή για να τον καταστήσει κοινωνό της τέχνης του και να του μεταδώσει το μήνυμα του συγγραφέα, εξηγεί ο αρχιτέκτονας.
Το σχέδιο του κτιρίου
Στο προτεινόμενο Θέατρο του Θ.Ο.Κ. (Κεντρική Σκηνή) με χωρητικότητα 500 ατόμων η μορφολογία του εσωτερικού χώρου έχει σχήμα κεκλιμένου πετάλου που αγκαλιάζει τη σκηνή με τις θέσεις των θεατών σε τρία επίπεδα που δίνουν ενδιαφέρουσες οπτικές γωνίες προς τη σκηνή, που ενισχύει την επικοινωνία θεατή - ηθοποιού, ακουστική επάρκεια, παρασκήνια και άρτιο μηχανικό εξοπλισμό.
Ο χώρος της πειραματικής σκηνής (Νέα Σκηνή) πρέπει να επιτρέπει την ικανοποίηση κάθε πρωτοποριακής τάσης, στις αναζητήσεις του συγγραφέα, στους πειραματισμούς του σκηνοθέτη, στην έκφραση του ηθοποιού και στην ευαισθησία του σκηνογράφου. Ένα εργαστήρι οργανωμένο από τις λιτές σκηνές των πειραματικών θεάτρων όπου όλοι οι άνθρωποι να έχουν την ευκαιρία να ερευνούν και να πειραματίζονται. Στην περίπτωση του Θ.Ο.Κ. ο χώρος της Νέας Σκηνής προτείνεται σαν ενιαίος χώρος σε κουτί, με 150 θέσεις, όπου τίποτε δεν είναι σταθερό, ούτε οι θέσεις ούτε η σκηνή, ένας ευέλικτος χώρος όπου ο σκηνοθέτης μπορεί να παίξει και να πειραματισθεί ανάλογα με την παράσταση που θα ήθελε να ανεβάσει, η σκηνή δυνατόν να τοποθετείται στο κέντρο, στο πλάϊ της αίθουσας ή στο πίσω μέρος όπως ανάλογα διαρρυθμίζονται και τα καθίσματα.
Μέσα από τον πολυδύναμο σχεδιασμό του το κτίριο θα περιλαμβάνει τα γραφεία του οργανισμού, αίθουσες δοκιμών, εκθεσιακούς χώρους, καφετέρια, βιβλιοπωλείο κ.ά.

Η Στατιστική Υπηρεσία ανακοινώνει ότι ο αριθμός των αδειών οικοδομής που εκδόθηκαν από τις δημοτικές αρχές και τις επαρχιακές διοικήσεις κατά το μήνα Νοέμβριο 2006 ανήλθε στις 999. Η συνολική αξία των αδειών αυτών έφθασε τα £148,8 εκατομμύρια και το συνολικό εμβαδόν τις 333,9 χιλιάδες τετραγωνικά μέτρα. Με τις άδειες αυτές προβλέπεται να ανεγερθούν 1.639 οικιστικές μονάδες.

Κατά την περίοδο Ιανουαρίου – Νοεμβρίου 2006 εκδόθηκαν 9.022 άδειες οικοδομής, παρουσιάζοντας άνοδο 9,5% έναντι της αντίστοιχης περιόδου του προηγούμενου έτους. Η συνολική αξία των αδειών αυτών αυξήθηκε κατά 8,6% και το συνολικό εμβαδόν κατά 3,3%. Ο αριθμός των οικιστικών μονάδων παρουσίασε άνοδο της τάξης του 2,4%.

Οι άδειες οικοδομής συνιστούν σημαντική ένδειξη για τη μελλοντική δραστηριότητα στον κατασκευαστικό τομέα.

The island’s new airports will be delivered ahead of time, according to the chief executive of the multinational venture that will build and operate the brand new terminal buildings and runway extensions at Larnaca and Paphos at a cost of EUR 645 mln.

The smaller Paphos airport and its new facilities will delivered by the end of 2008 and the bigger one in Larnaca by the end of 2009.

Bob Manning, CEO of Hermes Airports Ltd., told the Financial Mirror in an exclusive interview that Larnaca “will be a world-class airport. Spectacular!”

With over 20 years experience in building and running airports in Australia and around the world, he was recruited for the Cyprus job by Vancouver Airports, one of the leading airport designers and operators in the world and an equity shareholder in Hermes Airports.

“This contract is a turnkey project for ‘design and build’, which means that Bouygues International produces a comprehensive design which is built by expert local and international partners, and we review the design packages as we go along,” Manning explained.

“We hardly ever deviate from such designs, unless some particular issues come up. So far everything has been going ahead smoothly and we will even finish the new airport (at Larnaca) ahead of time,” he said.

The government awarded Hermes Airports a build-operate-transfer (BOT) concession agreement for 25 years in May which should earn the state some CYP 2 bln (EUR 3.48 bln) during that period.

The present airport terminal was built in 1975 and has been subject to many extensions and with an ability to handle some 2.5 mln passengers a year, as opposed to the present-day traffic of some 6 mln passengers a year.

The BOT contract is for a new passenger terminal at Larnaca with a design capacity for 7.5 mln passengers a year scheduled for delivery to the public on November 11, 2009. A second phase will see the extension of the new terminal raise its capacity to 9 mln passengers and extend the runway from 2,700m to 3,500m by 2013.

There will be a total of 16 passenger boarding bridges accepting almost all types of aircraft ranging from the small Airbus A321 to the larger Boeing 747-400 Jumbo.

Work should be completed on June 2, 2009 after which there will be a phase-in period to test the facilities.

The Paphos project will see a new passenger terminal with a capacity for 2.7 mln passengers and runway extension to 3,100m for delivery on November 11, 2008.

It’s all about tourism

But Manning said that if Cyprus as a tourist destination doesn’t work, it won’t make any difference how big an airport one builds.

“We’re not in the business of just operating an airport – we’re in the business of tourism and tourism is all about what you do when you get there,” to the final destination, he said.

Manning said that it was up to all parties concerned to review the island’s tourism marketing and plan ahead for the long-term.

A round table discussion will be held at the end of January with the participation of all interested parties – the airport operators, airline representatives, officials from the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) – in order to review all issues.

“We can’t succeed without them and they can’t succeed without us,” Manning said.

He said that with new projects being delivered as planned, people get a bit confident and show more interest in public projects. Even the new port development in Larnaca should gain from the airport project and the new air of confidence.

Fee hikes

As regards criticism that airport fees were hiked half-way through the 2006 summer season, Manning said that “any price rise is the result of two things – new buildings and privatization.” He added, however, that the Cyprus airport fees were “much too low” and that state subsidies did not help improve things.

“It isn’t an option to maintain the existing buildings and refurbish them,” he said. Eventually, after the new terminals are built and operation, the old buildings could be utilized for other services such as cargo, aircraft maintenance, etc.

The new Larnaca terminal building is based on a previous Aeroport des Paris (ATP) design produced in 1994 for an airport that accommodates some 3 mln tourists a year in an economy very much like that of Cyprus, driven by tourism.

It will be on three levels, with the third level used for departures and the second for arrivals. The highway extension has already been built and the traffic will revolve around short and long-stay parking, as well as quick drop-off points for individuals, taxis and buses.

There will be no conflict in the two directions of traffic (arrivals and departures), while passengers will walk straight into the main areas and find their gates very easily.

Passenger growth

“We’re planning for passenger growth every year, with a long-term target of 3.5 to 4% each year,” Manning said.

Asked if the new airport will be able to handle wide-body and long-haul aircraft, such as the Airbus A380, he explained that aviation in Cyprus in the future will be about frequency as opposed to the size of aircraft that land at the airports.

“It’s all about scheduling, and at present all the traffic is in summer. We should see how we can spread that out more evenly in the future.”

As regards the matter of having more runways to cope with the increased traffic, as was the case during the evacuation from Lebanon in summer, Manning said this is unnecessary if you plan well. “We can even accommodate up to 20-25 mln through-traffic on just one runway if need be. More runways do not solve problems.”

Realising that fuel economy and emissions are the new buzzwords for airlines, the new airport operator has already recruited a manager with “good environmental sense.”

“Hermes Airports wants to be and wants to be seen as a good environmental manager,” Manning said, adding that “anything that saves fuel and lowers emissions we will be looking into.”

He added that there is even some solar power utilization on the design of the new buildings.

Manning said that the full liberalisation of airport services will begin in the first and second quarters of 2008, a year prior to the transfer from the old Larnaca terminal building to the new.

Eventually, there will be three operators working under one roof, with CTC-ARI already operating as the master concessionaire for the shops and retail services. CTC-ARI is a joint venture partnership between the 10% local shareholder CTC and the Irish Aer Rianta International.

A food and beverage (F&B) announcement will be made “soon”, Manning added, while the issue of security of the building, as well as aviation safety is the responsibility of the government.

Another low-cost carrier heads for Cyprus

A SECOND low-cost airline is set to start operations to Cyprus, with the announcement that SkyEurope Airlines is to offer two flights a week to the island beginning in March.

The airline, whose main base is in Bratislava, Slovakia will fly to Larnaca airport from Vienna and back again.

The price of a one-way ticket is believed to be 19 euros plus 11 in taxes. With bases also in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia SkyEurope is the first multi-based airline in Central Europe. The airline operates short-haul “point-to-point” scheduled and charter passenger and cargo services.

The airline was established in November 2001 and started operations in February 2002.

Employs around 700 people it currently operates a total of 99 routes to 42 destinations in 19 countries, making it Central Europe?s largest low-cost airline.

The SkyEurope fleet includes four Boeing 737-300?s (operated by SkyEurope Airlines Hungary), three Boeing 737-500?s and six Boeing 737-700?s. SkyEurope placed an order in 2005 for up to 32 new Boeing 737-700 aircraft (of which 16 are subject to purchase rights) to be delivered between 2006 and 2009, currently the largest order in Central Europe valued at US$1.76 billion at list prices. The first 12 aircraft will be financed and leased to SkyEurope by GECAS.

Last December, it was announced that budget airline Monarch is to launch scheduled flights from London Luton to Cyprus.

The Larnaca service will start on March 26 with fares from ?69.99 sterling one-way including taxes, and web booking discounts.

Ayia Napa is not the first place that springs to mind when it comes to overseas property hotspots.

The Cypriot resort has, during the last 10 years, been associated with a burgeoning UK Garage music scene and hordes of drunken Brits on 18-30 holidays.

But Ayia Napa is reinventing itself and is now becoming a serious prospect for investors looking to buy property in Cyprus, according to investment firm Assetz.

The authorities are clamping down on loud music and typical 18-30s antics as the resort transforms into an upmarket holiday destination.

Now, nightclubs and bars that play loud music into the early hours are immediately closed down and their equipment confiscated.

The move to rid the resort of its downmarket reputation is attracting more families with children and more upmarket holidaymakers, and facilities to cater for them are springing up.

There are plans to build three golf courses and two huge marinas that are capable of berthing large yachts, with the aim of turning Ayia Napa into the ‘Monte Carlo of the Middle East’.

Moira Augusti, a resident of Ayia Napa for nearly a decade, said of the change in the resort: “Several years ago, Ayia Napa was a club haven for the young, it was extremely noisy and there was always trouble. There is now a dramatic change. The streets are occupied by families with children eating ice creams and young couples walking hand-in-hand, rather than young drunken clubbers.”

So why should this interest overseas property investors?

To start with house prices in Cyprus have risen by about 15 per cent in the last 12 months, but in Ayia Napa, along with neighbouring Protaras and Paralimni, prices have risen by an additional five per cent.

The poor reputation of Ayia Napa also means that house prices are considerably lower than in the rest of the island, meaning there is room for growth as the area regenerates.

Currently, a penthouse apartment of about 80 to 90 square metres, with a 50 square metre terrace area 300 yards from the beach, with on-site swimming pools, tennis and shops would cost about £110,000 sterling.

An equivalent property at the other end of the island would cost between 30 per cent and 40 per cent more, at about £145,000 to £155,000.

“As the higher quality holiday companies move into Ayia Napa and the world-class golf courses and marinas for business, the potential rental income for investors is significantly improved,” said Assetz managing director Stuart Law.

“They will also benefit from house price growth which is likely to be higher than the rest of the island as the upmarket tourist trade continues to develop.

“When Cyprus adopts the euro in 2008 it will have to decrease interest rates from the current 5.5 per cent to the much lower euro rate, making borrowing cheaper, which is likely to further strengthen the property market.”

All in all this makes Ayia Napa a far more attractive prospect for overseas property investors, particularly those looking for property in Cyprus, than its erstwhile downmarket reputation would suggest.

Airport bus system by 2008?

THE GOVERNMENT is looking into a transport system to take passengers to and from the island’s airports, with initial forecasts saying the plan could be in effect as early as next year.
The plan is at its final stage, with the European Commission on its way to approving the initiation of research into the viability of the project based on the EU budget for Cyprus for the years 2007 to 2013.

The plan was given a welcome hearing during a meeting last week between the Municipalities Union and the Government Planning Department, especially from the representative of the Commission who has the final say in the approval of the budget.
“This is not the first time we have put forward this proposal, this time we have received a positive reaction from the EU and the Planning Department so we can receive the money from the Union budget to begin the research,” the General Secretary of the Union Municipality Athos Germanos said yesterday.

“This is designed to raise the quality of service to both Cypriots going and returning from abroad as well as tourists. We feel that it is a duty of a state to provide such a service to the public. It will be an additional service to the taxis,” he told the Mail.
General Manager of the Government Planning Department, Andreas Moleskis, said that this can only be seen as a good thing as an alternative has to be provided to the taxi service currently available.

“It is not possible for someone coming to Cyprus from Greece or other neighbouring countries for £50 and then needing the same amount of money to arrive at his destination which is located elsewhere on the island,” he said.

In view of possible opposition to the plan by taxi services at both airports, Moleskis said that nothing would stop the preliminary research taking place given that it was given the final green light.

“No reaction to the plan can obstruct us from carrying out this research, we will definitely be doing so once we receive the economic boost,” he added.

Over the possible time scale before this transport service would finally be put into action, Germanos said that he hoped that everything would be in place by 2008.

“An exact date cannot be set at the moment; there are still a lot of things that need to be done. As soon as the subsidy is released for us to use, the research will begin and should be completed by the end of the year. Then based on the results, which are fully expected to point to the creation of such a service, it could even start from the next year,” he said.

Cypriot suppliers to the hospitality industry are in confident mood as they prepare to participate in the first national pavilion for Cyprus at The Hotel Show 2007.

Recent forecast by the World Travel Organisation (WTO) predicted an average annual growth rate of 6.7 per cent per for the next 15 years in the hospitality sector in this region. There will be over 20 major exporters participating in the Cypriot group, and having already contributed towards the development of the Mediterranean island’s own five-star industry, they have every reason to be optimistic about their move into this growing market.

Maggie Moore, Exhibition Director, The Hotel Show 2007, which takes place at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre (DIEC) on 3-5 June, said, “This is the first time Cyprus has organised a national pavilion. Last year individual Cypriot companies took a total of 30 square metres. Πέντε διεθνείς ή πολυεθνικές κατασκευαστικές κοινοπραξίες έχουν επιλεγεί μετά από αξιολόγηση από το Υπουργείο Συγκοινωνιών και Έργων, σχετικά με την κατασκευή του αυτοκινητόδρομου Πάφου-Πόλεως Χρυσοχούς. Η εξέλιξη αυτή κρίνεται καθοριστική για τη συνέχεια, δεδομένου ότι σε λίγες μέρες παραδίδονται τα έγγραφα υποβολής προσφορών στις εν λόγω κοινοπραξίες, με στόχο πριν το τέλος του 2007 να κατακυρωθεί το έργο στον προτιμητέο προσφοροδότη.

Στη συνέχεια θα ακολουθήσει αξιολόγηση των προσφορών και θα αρχίσει διαπραγμάτευση με τον προτιμητέο προσφοροδότη. Στόχος είναι πριν το τέλος του 2007 να υπογραφεί συμφωνία για την εκτέλεση του έργου.
Οι εξελίξεις αυτές έχουν προκαλέσει ικανοποίηση στις Αρχές της επαρχίας Πάφου και ιδιαίτερα στο διαμέρισμα Χρυσοχούς, λόγω της κεφαλαιώδους σημασίας που αποδίδεται στο συγκεκριμένο έργο.
Ο νέος αυτοκινητόδρομος Πάφου-Πόλεως Χρυσοχούς θα είναι μήκους 30,5 χιλιομέτρων, ο παρακαμπτήριος θα έχει μήκος 3,3 χιλιόμετρα, η πρόσβαση προς το Λατσί 1,8 και η σύνδεση Μεσόγης-Τσάδας 4 χιλιόμετρα. Ο κύριος αυτοκινητόδρομος περιλαμβάνει 9 ανισόπεδους κόμβους, 7 κοιλαδογέφυρες και δύο σήραγγες. Η διάρκεια κατασκευής του έργου είναι τα τέσσερα χρόνια.

Jazeera to fly Cyprus from March

Jazeera Airways today announced it will begin flights to Larnaca via Kuwait starting March 26, 2007. It will fly three times a week from Dubai to the European resort town via Kuwait, operating brand new Airbus A320s all fitted with leather seats.

“We are very pleased to be launching this new destination today and to open our expanding network to travellers from the Larnaca International Airport,” said chairman and CEO, Marwan Boodai.

“This new destination brings added travel options to our leisure travelers who can now look forward to enjoying the amazing culture and entertainment Larnaca has to offer. With a fare of Dh270 each way, there has never been a better time to explore and enjoy Larnaca.”

Situated on the south-east coast of Cyprus, Larnaca is known for its picturesque palm-fringed seafront. History enthusiasts can look forward to discovering the ruins of Ancient Kitium which date back to the 13th century as well as enjoy a visit to the famous marble bust of Stoic philosopher Zeno. The town also boasts an excellent variety of restaurants, clubs, shops and cinemas.

Flights from Dubai to Larnaca will operate on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

The airline’s website jazeeraairways.com now offers an enhanced online travel solution where travellers can book, pay and reserve their seats online and even change their booking right up to three hours before flight. Travelers can alternatively book their tickets through the customer support call centres in their cities or through their chosen travel agents.

Hm this is good news. That high place will finally complete the highway network in cyprus...perhaps it will be fully built if the morfou highway is connected with polhs as well, but there is little use to that.

Now as far the Dubai flights that could only mean good things for my hometown which is in desperate need of tourism. But Larnaca should become important for Muslims because of Mehmet Nazim Adil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehmet_Nazim_Adil) founder of the Sufi order and the Hala Sultan Tekke, the 3rd holiest Muslim place. There is so much potential for religious tourism which is left unexploited.

no further info unfortunately....
i only remember reading about them in a goverment paper for the future of transports in cyprus...
the paper mentioned also the second ring road for nicosia that will start from geri,pass from dhali,tseri , lakatameia and join the nicosia-troodos highway

I think is J&P AVAX (1 company),but anyway a new highway its always good news:)

J&P (Joannou kai Paraskevaidis) is a company of cypriot origin and base, J&P AVAX is the joint company based in Greece mostly owned by Paraskevaidis (J&P)... When they say that AVAX will be performing works in cyprus they mean just that... Engineers and site managers will be coming over from Greece as employees of J&P AVAX possibly using Cypriot workers as the capacity of J&P Cyprus may not be capable of handling all the work... This is the case with the construction of the new ring road of limassol that involves the construction of multy-level junctions (anisopedoi komvoi). The junctions of Agia fyla and Polemidia were constructed by J&P Cyprus but the junction of Germasogia is being constructed by J&P AVAX...

Eurobank eyes June Cyprus opening

EFG Eurobank, Greece’s third largest financial group has announced its intention to expand into Cyprus through the establishment of its first branch here by June 2007, according to local sources.

Eurobank CEO Nikola Karamouzi had a meeting with the Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, Christodoulos Christodoulou, with Eurobank officials stating that they welcome the competitive environment in the local banking market.

“After our expansion into the Balkan region, we decided that the time was right to expand our operations to Cyprus,” Karamouzi told reporters, adding that the expansion drive will be organic and does not include plans for mergers or takeovers.

Christodoulou welcomed the arrival of Eurobank to Cyprus as not only the Group is one of the best managed in Greece but it also will expand the range of services on offer in Cyprus.

Eurobank is one of Greece’s most dynamic banks with a presence in south east Europe with emphasis on the Balkans area including significant presence in Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, as well as Poland and recently in Turkey and the Ukraine.

The EFG Group, based in Geneva and controlled by the Latsis family has 40.8% control of the voting shares of the Bank, with Eurobank enjoying a strong shareholder base since it has more than 300.000 institutional and private investors in its share registry.

A Nicosia lobby group who have launched a campaign to stop the planned transformation of Eleftheria Square have set up a website, urging people to log on and register their protests.

Calling themselves, ‘Nicosia Citizens Against the Transformation of Eleftheria Square’, the group is led by archaeologist and art historian Anna Marangou and journalist Alex Efthyvoulou. Marangou, who narrowly failed in her bid to be elected to the position of Nicosia Mayor in December, yesterday said that the aim of the website is to “inform people of our objections”.

“People living within the walls of Nicosia need to know how their daily lives are going to be greatly inconvenienced.” She added that she has nothing against the plans per se, as design is subjective, “but it is simply not suitable to be placed within the historical topography of Nicosia.”

In May 2005, Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid and her associates Christos Passas and Saffet Bekiroglu won the competition to redesign the capital’s square. Marangou says she feels “awkward that Hadid herself has never visited Cyprus to get a feel of the place”.

In the plans, the moat becomes a green belt, which will surround and unify the whole of the Venetian walls and become Nicosia’s main park. One of the aims is to enhance the quality of life for residents and offer a range of recreational facilities. Bicycle routes and walkways are clearly marked on the plans.

A smooth downhill continuation of the square will lead to the moat, where pedestrians can descend to the garden level and actively use the area. Coffee shops, snack bars and newsagents will be at hand too. There will also be a gallery, which will house information on the history of the Venetian walls and the city within the walls. Underground parking facilities and traffic redirection will apparently alleviate today’s congestion problems and a significant aspect is that the designs took into account the future reunification of Nicosia.

Marangou has for a long time been against the plans, previously labelling the project as “illegal” because the Aarhus Convention, which has been ratified by the Cyprus government, states that any major work such as this must first be presented to the people for their approval, which has not been done.

She added that the average European has the notion of a square as a place without motor vehicles, but that the road will remain in this case, with traffic actually increasing. There will also be no shade, as trees will be cut down, turning the area into what she described as an imposing concrete monstrosity. There are also worries over the cost, with the lobby group claiming the project will far exceed its initial budget of around £4 million.

The group has proposed the plan be presented to residents to inform them and then for it to be put to a municipal referendum, something they claim was in Mayor Eleni Mavrou’s electoral manifesto.

Despite their protests, Mavrou has remained defiant, saying that construction works for the restructuring of the area would begin early next year. She added that she was not surprised there was opposition to the scheme, as it could not please everyone.

The Architectural Council of Cyprus yesterday called on the Municipality to move forward with the plans, in spite of the opposition. This evening, several members of Hadid’s team will be in the capital to unveil further details.

Έργο Αρχαγγέλου στο Στρόβολο και στην Έγκωμη .
Το έργο θα ξεκινά από το φώτα τροχαίας του Κ Cineplex και θα καταλήγει, διαλαμβάνοντας τη Λεωφόρου Αρχαγγέλου, την οδό Μετοχίου και μέρος της Γρίβα Διγενή, στην περιοχή που βρίσκονται οι Πρεσβείες της Ρωσίας και των ΗΠΑ.
Το συνολικό μήκος του δρόμου - που είναι τεσσάρων λωρίδων - συμπεριλαμβανομένης της Γρίβα Διγενή, θα είναι τέσσερα χιλιόμετρα, ενώ του δευτερεύοντος οδικού δικτύου θα είναι δύο χιλιόμετρα.
Πρόκειται για μελέτη κατασκευής που υπάρχει εδώ και 10-12 χρόνια, γεγονός που είχε ως συνέπεια να διατηρηθεί το πλάτος του δρόμου όπως προέβλεπαν τα παλιά σχέδια (γύρω στα 7 μέτρα), σε αντίθεση με σήμερα, που λόγω της αύξησης της τιμής της γης, το πλάτος των υπό κατασκευήν δρόμων έχει μειωθεί έως και 40 εκατοστά.
Η ολοκλήρωση του έργου προβλέπεται να γίνει έως το 2010 με 2011, νοουμένου ότι όλα θα κινηθούν ομαλά μέσα στον υφιστάμενο προγραμματισμό.
Τα νέα έργα οδοποιίας γίνονται με στόχο τη βελτίωση του οδικού και κυκλοφοριακού δικτύου και, γενικότερα, την αναβάθμιση του συγκοινωνιακού συστήματος της πρωτεύουσας.

Τετραπλής κατεύθυνσης

Το έργο περιλαμβάνει τρεις διαβάσεις πεζών και ένα roundabout στην περιοχή του Δία. Θα είναι δρόμος τετραπλής κατεύθυνσης - δύο λωρίδων προς Τρόοδος και δύο λωρίδων προς Λευκωσία, ενώ τελευταίως έχει προστεθεί και μια ειδική λωρίδα για λεωφορεία, στην οποία θα υπάρχει ξεχωριστή σήμανση και διαφορετικό χρώμα ασφάλτου, ώστε να μην εισέρχονται εντός της άλλα αυτοκίνητα.
Η λωρίδα αυτή θα βρίσκεται σε όλο το μήκος του νέου δρόμου, μόνο όμως στην πλευρά με κατεύθυνση τη Λευκωσία. Η απόφαση αυτή λήφθηκε, προκειμένου να μη γίνουν επιπλέον απαλλοτριώσεις. Το λεωφορεία που θα κατευθύνονται από Λευκωσία προς Τρόοδος θα ακολουθούν τις κανονικές λωρίδες, αλλά με διαφοροποιημένο ωράριο, ώστε να μη συμβαίνει συμφόρηση κατά τη διακίνηση, κυρίως στις ώρες αιχμής.
Το μήκος της λεωφορειο-λωρίδας θα είναι γύρω στα 1900 μέτρα. Προνοείται ταυτόχρονα δημιουργία ποδηλατόδρομου, μέσα στο νέο σκέλος της Κύκκου - Μακεδονίας, ο οποίος προβλέπεται βάσει του κεντρικού, εγκριμένου σχεδίου ποδηλατόδρομων που υφίσταται ήδη.

Πεζοδρόμια, διαβάσεις

Προβλέπεται επίσης δημιουργία πεζοδρομίων. Μέσα στη Λεωφ. Αρχαγγέλου τα πεζοδρόμια θα είναι 3 μέτρα και 5 εκατοστά, στα αριστερά, προς τη Λευκωσία, ενώ κατά μήκος όλων των πεζοδρόμων θα υπάρχει οδηγός κατεύθυνσης τυφλών, για να μπορεί να χρησιμοποιείται από τυφλούς και άτομα με αναπηρία. Θα δημιουργηθούν επίσης 3 νέου τύπου υπόγειες διαβάσεις πεζών, οι οποίες, από τη μια θα παρέχουν μεγαλύτερη ασφάλεια, αλλά θα είναι και περισσότερο εύχρηστες, από την άλλη, σε σχέση προς τις υπέργειες διαβάσεις.

Απαλλοτριώσεις εκκλησιαστικής γης

ΤΟ ΕΡΓΟ πολύ πιθανό να ενταχθεί σε προγράμματα της Ε.Ε., και συγκεκριμένα στο Ταμείο Συνοχής, λόγω ορισμένων προδιαγραφών του, οι οποίες αποτελούν απαραίτητους όρους για να ενταχθεί ένα έργο στο συγκεκριμένο Ταμείο, όπως είναι η λεωφορειο-λωρίδα, η κυκλοφοριακή αναβάθμιση αρκετών περιοχών κ.λπ. Έτσι, είναι πολύ πιθανόν, ένα σημαντικό μέρος του έργου να καλυφθεί από την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση.
Το συνολικό κατασκευαστικό κόστος του έργου, χωρίς τις απαλλοτριώσεις, οι περισσότερες από τις οποίες βρίσκονται μέσα σε εκκλησιαστική γη (σημειωτέον πως «απαλλοτριώσεις» τέτοιου είδους, δηλαδή εντός εκκλησιαστικής γης, δεν θεωρούνται κανονικές απαλλοτριώσεις), αναμένεται να ανέλθει γύρω στα 13-15 εκατομμύρια λίρες. Η εξασφάλιση και χρησιμοποίηση της εκκλησιαστικής γης κατέστη δυνατή μέσω ειδικών συμφωνιών που έγιναν με την Ιερά Μονή Κύκκου. Το τελικό κόστος του έργου θα γνωστοποιηθεί με το άνοιγμα των προσφορών. Ένα μέρος του κόστους, περίπου το 1/5, έχει συμφωνηθεί να το επωμιστούν οι Δήμοι Έγκωμης και Στροβόλου, ενώ τα 4/5 η κυβέρνηση. Σε περίπτωση, όμως, που έρθει η ευρωπαϊκή χορηγία, που υπολογίζεται γύρω στο 40 με 60%, τότε θα διαφοροποιηθεί και το κόστος που θα καταβάλει η κάθε πλευρά.
Η ανάθεση του έργου θα γίνει με διεθνή διαγωνισμό, γι’ αυτό και ο χρόνος έναρξης των εργασιών θα προσδιοριστεί, αφού ολοκληρωθεί πρώτα το νομοτυπικό μέρος της διαδικασίας.
Το έργο, ως διεθνής προσφορά, θα δημοσιευθεί στην εφημερίδα των Ευρωπαϊκών Κοινοτήτων, περίοδος που μπορεί να διαρκέσει έως και 3 μήνες, και μετά θα γίνει η επιλογή του εργολάβου που θα το αναλάβει.
Σύμφωνα με τις εκτιμήσεις του Τομέα Μελετών Οδοποιίας του Τμήματος Δημοσίων Έργων, αν όλα κυλήσουν ομαλώς, γύρω στον ερχόμενο Δεκέμβριο ή Ιανουάριο προβλέπεται η έναρξη των εργασιών.

Δυο νέοι δρόμοι στον κυκλικό κόμβο

ΣΤΟΝ κυκλικό κόμβο θα γίνουν δύο νέοι δρόμοι. Ο ένας, ο οποίος δεν έχει ακόμη οδόσημο, θα είναι προέκταση της Κύκκου, θα φτάνει έως την Pizza Hut και θα σταματά επί της Σταδίου. Μελλοντικά προβλέπεται να καταλήξει στο δρόμο Λευκωσίας - Λεμεσού. Το οδόστρωμα προς Λευκωσία θα είναι πλάτους 6,60 μέτρα, ενώ η κεντρική νησίδα θα είναι γύρω στο 1,2 μέτρο - η αρχική εκτίμηση ήταν να είναι γύρω στα 4,20 μέτρα, αλλά αναγκαστικά θα μειωθεί για να δοθεί περισσότερος χώρος για τη λεωφορειο-λωρίδα.
Προς το Τρόοδος, το πλάτος του δρόμου θα είναι γύρω στα 7 μέτρα και 3 μέτρα πεζοδρόμιο. Το μέγιστο συνολικό πλάτος του δρόμου θα είναι γύρω στα 23,80 μέτρα.
Όσον αφορά την πρόσβαση από και προς το Μέγαρο Δίας, μετά τη δημιουργία των νέων οδικών δικτύων πίσω από το μέγαρο - υφίσταται ήδη μία είσοδος προς το πάρκινγκ, το Τμήμα Δημοσίων Έργων εισηγήθηκε δύο νέες εισόδους, οι οποίες η μία θα είναι από την Κύκκου - με αριστερόστροφες κινήσεις - και η άλλη από την πίσω πλευρά.
Ο άλλος δρόμος, έως τη Βασιλέως Παύλου, που θα αποτελεί κι αυτός νέο σκέλος - υπάρχει υφιστάμενος δρόμος που θα αναβαθμιστεί - θα σταματά στη συγκεκριμένη οδό, με φώτα τροχαίας.

Η Γρίβα Διγενή

ΠΑΡΑΛΛΗΛΑ με το έργο αυτό, αναβαθμίζεται δραστικά η Λεωφόρος Γρίβα Διγενή - περίπου 700 μέτρα σε ολόκληρο το μήκος της, που κατανέμεται σε 350 μέτρα προς τα φώτα του Άλφα - Μέγα και 350 μέτρα προς την πλευρά των σχολείων. Παράλληλα, η οδική αναρρύθμιση θα διαλαμβάνει και ολόκληρη τη Λεωφόρο Προκοπίου (Μετόχι Κύκκου) έως τη ρωσική πρεσβεία.
Σύμφωνα με το σχέδιο, ο δρόμος αυτός δεν θα καλυφθεί με άσφαλτο, αλλά με κόκκινους κυβόλιθους -θα μοιάζει με βουλεβάρτο, δηλαδή πλατιά και δενδροφυτεμένη λεωφόρο αστικού κέντρου κατάλληλη για περιπάτους-, μια αρχική εξαγγελία που είχε κάνε η Πολεοδομία, ώστε να τονιστεί η ιδιαιτερότητα του δρόμου.

Το έργο χωρίστηκε σε τρία τμήματα

ΤΟ ΕΡΓΟ έχει χωριστεί σε τρία τμήματα, έτσι ώστε να καταστεί περισσότερο ευχερής η αποπεράτωσή του, αλλά και με λιγότερες δυσκολίες η καθημερινή διακίνηση των οδηγών. Θα αποπερατώνεται το πρώτο τμήμα και θα γίνεται η παραχώρησή του στην κυκλοφορία, ενώ παράλληλα θα αρχίζει η κατασκευή του δεύτερου. Το πρώτο τμήμα διαλαμβάνει τη Λεωφόρο Προκοπίου, έως την περιοχή των Πρεσβειών, τη Λεωφόρο Γρίβα Διγενή, και τη διάβαση πεζών που θα κατασκευαστεί σχεδόν απέναντι από την Ιερατική Σχολή (στο ύψος της εισόδου στο φυτώριο του Κύκκου).
Το δεύτερο τμήμα διαλαμβάνει τις προεκτάσεις της οδού Κύκκου και της οδού Μακεδονίας και θα φτάνει έως το σχολείο Παρισινού. Το τρίτο τμήμα θα «ανέρχεται» έως τα φώτα τροχαίας στο K Cineplex. Ο συγκεκριμένος σχεδιασμός δεν αποκλείει, βεβαίως, τη δυνατότητα του εργολάβου να προχωρεί στη μετακίνηση περιφράξεων στα άλλα δύο τμήματα, ενώ θα μαίνονται οι εργασίες στο ένα τμήμα. Οι εργασίες θα γίνονται ανά τεμάχια των 30-40 μέτρων δρόμου, τα οποία θα παραδίδονται στην κυκλοφορία, ώστε να μην επηρεάζεται σε μεγάλη κλίμακα το οδικό δίκτυο.
Παράλληλα θα τοποθετηθούν σωλήνες αποχέτευσης ομβρίων υδάτων - θα υπάρχουν 10 χιλιόμετρα πλαστικές σωλήνες, που θα διοχετεύουν το νερό από φρεάτια μέσα στους κεντρικούς οχετούς και άλλα 7 χιλιόμετρα τσιμεντοσωλήνες.
Με το κυρίως έργο θα συνδεθεί περί τα δύο χιλιόμετρα δευτερεύον οδικό δίκτυο - δηλαδή υπηρεσιακοί δρόμοι, παράδρομοι που ενώνονται με τους κεντρικούς δρόμους.

«Δεν πάει άλλο η Κύπρος να αναπτύσσεται σε μήκος και σε πλάτος», δήλωσε χθες ο Υπουργός Εσωτερικών Νεοκλής Συλικιώτης, τονίζοντας ότι η ανάπτυξη της Κύπρου πρέπει να στηρίζεται σε σωστά πολεοδομικά κριτήρια και σε ένα σωστό πολεοδομικό σχεδιασμό

Από τον περασμένο Ιανουάριο, ανέφερε ο Ν. Συλικιώτης, έχει αναθέσει σε έγκυρο πολεοδόμο να μελετήσει το όλο θέμα με αρχή τις χιλιάδες άκτιστα οικόπεδα που είναι αδρανούντα σε αστικές περιοχές, σημειώνοντας ότι μόνο στη Λευκωσία υπάρχουν 3.500 τέτοια οικόπεδα. Το δεύτερο που πρέπει να μελετηθεί, είπε, είναι η ανάπτυξη σε ύψος, βλέποντας πάντοτε τα δεδομένα και τις προϋποθέσεις, σημειώνοντας ότι «όταν αναπτύσσεσαι σε ύψος πρέπει να υπάρχει μία τέτοια ανάπτυξη που να μην επιβαρύνονται οι κάτοικοι της περιοχής», δηλαδή να υπάρξει και η κατάλληλη υποδομή, όπως δρόμοι, πλατείες και χώροι στάθμευσης. «Στόχος μας», κατέληξε ο κ. Συλικιώτης, «είναι να ενισχύσουμε την ποιότητα ζωής των Κυπρίων για να υπάρξει μία τέτοια ανάπτυξη, την οποία να κληροδοτήσουμε στις επόμενες γενιές, μιαν Κύπρο όπου θα διασφαλίζεται ο σεβασμός στον άνθρωπο και στο περιβάλλον».

it is very simple in design but its importance is that it is a private investment project,which makes it the first non goverment/municipal theater in the city.
(there are other small theaters in nicosia but are all housed in old warehouses or buildings, they dont have their "own" building,if i can put it like this)

IKEA Cyprus to open in September

The budget furniture store IKEA will open its first outlet in Cyprus on September 5 within the busiest commercial square mile on the outskirts of Nicosia, where other store openings are expected the same month in what is probably going to be the biggest shopping mall on the island.

Vassilis Fourlis, president of the operator of the furniture franchise that already has two IKEA stores in Greece, will be in Cyprus for the inauguration of the 22,000 sq.m. store strategically located within the ‘Mall of Cyprus’ at the Shacolas Emporium Park that will include retail stores, clothing shops and food outlets.

Fourlis will also be here next week for a media event and to introduce the IKEA catalogue that will be distributed in the wider market.

Although IKEA products can no longer be placed in the ‘low cost’ category, they are known for their functionality, simple designs and affordable prices.

The Fourlis group officially announced in October 2005 that it was to build the first IKEA store in Cyprus, through its House Market subsidiary. It was initially expected to commence operations by June this year, but has been recruiting local staff for training since last year.

Fourlis’ flagship store with a floor space of 20,000 sq.m. opened in Thessaloniki, followed by a second 25,000 sq.m. IKEA store near Athens airport last year. A second Athens outlet is expected to open in September and the Group also plans to open a new IKEA outlet in Bulgaria in 2008.

The cost of establishing the Cyprus and Athens stores is estimated at EUR 40 mln, while the annual turnover of House Market following the full operation of all three stores is expected to top EUR 300 mln.

IKEA Cyprus is expected to generate annual sales of EUR 40-50 mln, Vassilis Fourlis told Reuters in an interview last October 2006, while the sale of a 20% stake in Kotsovolos to Dixons Group is estimated at contribute EUR 32 mln to Fourlis Group earnings.

The IKEA opening is regarded as a welcome move in Cyprus, after the IKEA-owned Habitat franchise in Nicosia closed unceremoniously last December due to troubles at the Greek franchise operations.

At the time of closure a Habitat statement read: “It is with deepest regret that we confirm Habitat’s franchise partner Franco Import has come into financial difficulties leading to the closure of four stores – three in Athens and one in Cyprus – on December 11. This situation has been triggered by an external supplier to Franco Import, not by Habitat.”

The statement went on to say that Franco Import and Habitat UK Limited have been partners for almost ten years and that the company was, “saddened that Franco is facing challenging circumstances.”

Though the companies are owned by the same conglomerate, the opening of two IKEA superstores in Athens and Thessaloniki is said to have hit Habitat hard in Greece, with an Athenian newspaper reporting that it was only a matter of time before Habitat got into trouble.

Habitat is owned by the Ikano Group and operates as an independent commercial legal entity from the IKEA Group.

The Habitat store in Nicosia reopened its doors to the public briefly in March in an attempt to get rid of its outstanding stock and satisfy previous orders.

The store has since been taken over by the TAG Designer clothing company that already operates a store on Zena Gunther road.

The ‘Mall of Cyprus’ in the Shacolas Emporium Park will also include a Carrefour supermarket, food outlets (Burger King, McDonald’s), a Starbucks coffee shop, and retail stores from the Shacolas groups (Debenhams, Next, Zako, etc.).

The main ‘Mall of Cyprus’ will have total shop space of 27,500 sq.m., the new IKEA store and two adjacent retail buildings with a further 10,000 sq.m. In addition, the nearby DIY Home Centre will continue to operate independently, but will eventually be engulfed by the new complex.

One of the newcomers is Public, the books, music, games and peripherals store that already operates three outlets in Greece and plans to open the Nicosia store by the end of the year.

The 1,900 sq.m. store will include sections or departments for books, music, sound and vision CDs and DVDs, computers, mobile phones, photography and gaming.

The holding company, PublicWorld AE, has already embarked on an ambitious recruitment drive to hire as many as 180 staff for all levels of work, from mid-management department heads, to marketing and sales, as well as engineers, cashiers and store keepers.

Public also attracts customers through its marketing gimmicks such as ‘in-store’ events, music downloading and surfing the Internet.

Σήμερα σημειώθηκε νέο ρεκόρ στη ζήτηση, η οποία γύρω στις 2 το μεσημέρι έφτασε τα 1012 MW. Το ρεκόρ του φετινού καλοκαιριού ήταν 1006, το οποίο σημειώθηκε στις 28 Ιουνίου. Ο υπουργός Εμπορίου Αντώνης Μιχαηλίδης δεν αποκλείει το ενδεχόμενο το 2008 η Κύπρος να αντιμετωπίσει πρόβλημα στην κάλυψη των αναγκών ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας και γι' αυτό θεωρεί ιδιαίτερα σημαντική τη λειτουργία της τέταρτης μονάδας στο Βασιλικό.

Από πλευράς Αρχής Ηλεκτρισμού δόθηκαν διαβεβαιώσεις ότι λαμβάνονται όλα τα δέοντα μέτρα ώστε το ερχόμενο καλοκαίρι να υπάρχει επάρκεια ρεύματος και ότι έγιναν διευθετήσεις για να παραδοθεί έγκαιρα η μονάδα στο Βασιλικό με επιπρόσθετη παραγωγή 130 MW.

Η κοινοτική έρευνα καλύπτει όλους τους τομείς που κρίνουν την ποιότητα ζωής μιας πόλης
Η μεγάλη πλειοψηφία (84%) των κατοίκων της Λευκωσίας εμφανίζεται ικανοποιημένη από την ποιότητα ζωής στην πόλη, ενώ μόνο το 14% εξέφρασε αντίθετη άποψη, σύμφωνα με έρευνα που πραγματοποιήθηκε σε 75 ευρωπαϊκές πόλεις το Νοέμβριο του 2006 για λογαριασμό της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής.

Από την έρευνα, προκύπτει ότι η Αθήνα έχει το μικρότερο ποσοστό ικανοποιημένων (62%) και το μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό (38%) δυσαρεστημένων μεταξύ όλων των ευρωπαϊκών πόλεων για την ποιότητα ζωής. Στο σύνολο των ευρωπαϊκών πόλεων, το 90% των ερωτηθέντων δήλωσε ικανοποίηση.

Η κοινοτική έρευνα καλύπτει όλους τους τομείς που κρίνουν την ποιότητα ζωής μιας πόλης, δηλαδή τη ρύπανση, το θόρυβο, το πράσινο, την ασφάλεια, την αγοραστική δύναμη, τις δημόσιες μεταφορές, την υγεία και τις υπηρεσίες.

Η αμέσως επόμενη πόλη με τους περισσότερους δυσαρεστημένους κατοίκους μετά την Αθήνα, ήταν η Νάπολη της Ιταλίας (36%) και στη συνέχεια η Κωνσταντινούπολη (29%) , το Βουκουρέστι (20%) και το Λονδίνο (16%). Στον αντίποδα, πανευτυχείς με την ποιότητα ζωής της πόλης τους εμφανίζονται οι κάτοικοι της πρωτεύουσας του Λουξεμβούργου (3% δυσαρεστημένοι), της Κοπεγχάγης (3%), του Ελσίνκι (5%), του Δουβλίνου (6%) και του Αμστερνταμ (6%).

Σχετικά με τους επιμέρους τομείς, για τις δημόσιες μεταφορές το 72% των κατοίκων της Λευκωσίας δήλωσε ότι δεν είναι ικανοποιημένο, ενώ ικανοποίηση εξέφρασε το 17%. Στην Αθήνα το 70% εμφανίζεται ικανοποιημένο από τις υπηρεσίες που προσφέρονται, ενώ οι δυσαρεστημένοι δεν ξεπέρασαν το 20%.

Στην ερώτηση εάν η πόλη είναι καθαρή, το 61% των κατοίκων της Λευκωσίας απάντησε καταφατικά και το 39% αρνητικά. Στην Αθήνα το 30% απάντησε θετικά και το 68% αρνητικά.

Το 79% των ερωτηθέντων απάντησε ότι η πόλη της Λευκωσίας έχει πολύ θόρυβο, ενώ το αντίστοιχο ποσοστό στην Αθήνα ήταν 82%. Το 82% θεωρεί ότι η Λευκωσία έχει μεγάλη ρύπανση, ενώ το αντίστοιχο ποσοστό στην Αθήνα ήταν 94%.Το 52% θεωρεί ότι υπάρχει έλλειψη πρασίνου στην πρωτεύουσα της Κύπρου, ενώ στην Αθήνα το αντίστοιχο ποσοστό ήταν 68% και στο σύνολο της ΕΕ 28%.

Το 91% των κατοίκων της Λευκωσίας αισθάνεται ασφάλεια στη γειτονιά του και το 86% στο σύνολο της πόλης. Τα αντίστοιχα ποσοστά στην Αθήνα ήταν 78% και 59%.

Για τα σχολεία το 68% των κατοίκων της Λευκωσίας δήλωσε ότι είναι ικανοποιημένο από την ποιότητά τους, ενώ αντίθετη άποψη εξέφρασε το 19%. Ο μέσος όρος της ΕΕ ήταν 19% και 59% αντίστοιχα.

Για τις υπηρεσίες που προσφέρουν τα νοσοκομεία ικανοποίηση εξέφρασε το 52% των κατοίκων της Λευκωσίας, ενώ δυσαρεστημένο είναι το 19%. Ειδικότερα για τους γιατρούς το 73% εκφράζει την ικανοποίησή του για τις υπηρεσίες τους, ενώ το 20% εξέφρασε αρνητική άποψη.

Το ποσοστό ικανοποίησης για την ποιότητα ζωής που εξέφρασαν οι κάτοικοι των παρακάτω πόλεων ήταν το εξής: Αθήνα 62%, Κωνσταντινούπολη 70%, Βουκουρέστι 79%, Βαλέτα 82%, Λονδίνο 83%, Λευκωσία 84%, Ρώμη 85%, Σόφια 86%, Βουδαπέστη 86%, Μαδρίτη 88%, Βαρσοβία 89%, Μπρατισλάβα 89%, Βρυξέλλες 89%, Ρίγα 89%, Βερολίνο 90%, Παρίσι 90%, Λισαβόνα 91%, Πράγα 92%, Στοκχόλμη 93%, Βιέννη 94%, Βίλνιους 93%, Δουβλίνο 94%, Λουμπλιάνα 94%, Τάλιν 94, Ελσίνκι 94%, Αμστερνταμ 95%, Κοπεγχάγη 97%, Λουξεμβούργο 97%.

BoC plans Ukraine acquisition

BANK OF Cyprus expects to buy a bank in Ukraine in the next three months as part of its expansion drive into eastern Europe, its deputy chief executive said yesterday.

Bank of Cyprus is the island's largest lender with about 29 per cent of the banking market. It holds 3.7 per cent of the Greek market, both in terms of deposits and advances.

It opened fully fledged banking operations in Romania and Russia this year and under a three-year business plan expects overseas activities to account for about 70 per cent of its operations.

"We are evaluating four or five Ukrainian banks which have certain key features which are of preliminary interest to us," Bank of Cyprus group deputy Chief Executive Officer Charilaos Stavrakis told Reuters in an interview.

"Ukraine is a hugely expanding market. We don't want to miss the train for too long, so we would want to acquire a small bank to use as a vehicle to enter the market," Stavrakis said. "We are very confident that within three months we will be able to make an announcement of the acquisition of a Ukrainian bank … obviously this would be subject to approval of the Central Banks of Cyprus and Ukraine," he said.

Some preliminary contacts had been made, Stavrakis said. Asked what he was looking for, Stavrakis said: "A bank with a reasonable branch network, ideally more than 20 or 30 outlets at the minimum, a clean track record in the market."

Cyprus has strong business links with eastern Europe and already has Ukrainian clients on its books. The bank also has a team of people in Ukraine covering the local market, Stavrakis said.

"Ukraine is a huge market with a population of close to 50 million and it is still grossly underbanked," he said.

In Romania and Russia, Bank of Cyprus expects to set up at least "10 to 20 branches" within the next three years, he said. In Russia, Stavrakis said the bank would put emphasis on growing in Moscow and St. Petersburg. (R)

Bank of Cyprus Group Pcl (BOCY) announced the imminent opening of 11 branches in Greece, raising the total number of branches there to 132 and on target to increase its network in its second largest market where it operates to 190 by 2009.

BOC Group CEO Andreas Eliades said despite the intense competitive environment in the Greek market, the Group managed to lift its Return on Equity in Greece to 19.5% by the first half of 2007 from 13% a year ago.

Total advances in Greece during the first half of 2007 increased by 23% YoY to EUR 7.27 bln with a 3.7% market share of total loans in Greece and representing 41% of overall BOC Group advances that as at 30 June 2007 reached EUR 17.5 bln.

Total deposits in Greece during the first half of 2007 increased by 19% YoY to EUR 8.1 bln with a 3.7% market share by April 2007 and representing 35% of overall BOC Group deposits that as at 30 June 2007 reached EUR 22.8 bln.

Bank of Cyprus revealed that 25% of its loan portfolio in Greece is placed with large enterprises, 43% with medium-sized enterprises and 32% with private individuals. The comparable loan levels at BOC Group level are 48% with large enterprises, 16% with medium sized and 36% among private individuals.

Net interest income in the first half in Greece amounted to EUR 136 mln, up 21% YoY while total income was up 22% to EUR 171 mln compared to EUR 140 mln a year ago in the same period.

Total costs were up 18% to EUR 81 mln of which EUR 44 mln were staff costs and EUR 37 mln other costs. Core profits were up 25% at EUR 90 mln with the rate of contribution to overall Group profits at 29%, down from 31% a year ago.

Net profit for the first half of 2007 amounted to EUR 51 mln, up 83% from a year ago and representing 22% of overall total net profit of the Bank of Cyprus Group, which improved by 58% YoY to EUR 230 mln.

The Group employed a total of 2784 persons in Greece out of a total 6555 workforce. The net interest margin in Greece was 3%, the cost to income ratio at 47.6%, down from 49% a year ago but still higher than the overall Group C-I ratio of 43% for 1H07 while the ROE in Greece was 19.5%, which although better than the 13% achieved a year ago, is well below the 27.7% overall Bank of Cyprus ROE.

Αξιολόγηση της οικονομίας της Κύπρου από τον Διεθνή Οίκο Μoody's

Το Υπουργείο Οικονομικών ανακοινώνει ότι ο Διεθνής Οίκος Moody΄s στην πρόσφατη αξιολόγηση που διενήργησε για την κυπριακή οικονομία (έκθεση – Ιούλιος 2007) προέβη σε αναθεώρηση της πιστοληπτικής αξιολόγησης της Κύπρου σε ξένο συνάλλαγμα. Ο βαθμός που αποδόθηκε στην Κύπρο είναι «Α1 positive» που είναι υψηλότερος συγκριτικά με «Α2 positive» που ήταν η προηγούμενη αξιολόγηση. Η πιστοληπτική αξιολόγηση της Κύπρου σε εγχώριο νόμισμα επίσης βελτιώθηκε από «Α2 positive» σε «Α1 positive». Η αναβάθμιση της πιστοληπτικής αξιολόγησης της Κύπρου θα βελτιώσει τους όρους χρηματοδότησης ακόμη περισσότερο.

Ο Οίκος κατέληξε στην αξιολόγησή του αφού έλαβε υπόψη του την επικείμενη εισαγωγή του ευρώ στην Κύπρο την 1η Ιανουαρίου 2008, το βιώσιμο ρυθμό ανάπτυξης, τη διατήρηση του πληθωρισμού σε σχετικά χαμηλά επίπεδα, και το γεγονός ότι η Κύπρος βρίσκεται στη διαδικασία δημοσιονομικής εξυγίανσης με επιτυχή βελτίωση των δημόσιων οικονομικών.

Ο Οίκος αναφέρει ότι η ένταξη στη ζώνη του ευρώ είναι θετικό βήμα, αφού θα επιφέρει σημαντικά πλεονεκτήματα και χειροπιαστά οφέλη για την οικονομία, τις επιχειρήσεις και τον απλό πολίτη, όπως διαμόρφωση ευνοϊκών συνθηκών για σύγκλιση των επιτοκίων στα επίπεδα που επικρατούν στη ζώνη του ευρώ, δημιουργία ευνοϊκότερων συνθηκών δανεισμού για το δημόσιο και ιδιωτικό τομέα, εξουδετέρωση του συναλλαγματικού κόστους και κινδύνου στις συναλλαγές σε ευρώ, προσέλκυση ξένων επενδύσεων, μεγαλύτερη διαφάνεια στις τιμές, πρόσβαση σε ξένες χρηματαγορές.

Ο Οίκος αναφέρεται επίσης και στις προκλήσεις που έχει να αντιμετωπίσει η κυπριακή οικονομία. Οι προκλήσεις αυτές αφορούν: α) την εξάρτηση της Κύπρου από τις εισαγωγές πετρελαίου για κάλυψη των ενεργειακών της αναγκών σε συνδυασμό με την αυξανόμενη τιμή του πετρελαίου, β) το μικρό μέγεθος της οικονομίας και την εξάρτηση της από συγκεκριμένους τομείς οικονομικής δραστηριότητας, γεγονός που εγκυμονεί κινδύνους σε περίπτωση εμφάνισης κλυδωνισμών στους τομείς αυτούς και γ) τη διατήρηση της ανταγωνιστικότητας της οικονομίας.

ΤΗΣ ΣΤΑΛΩΣ ΓΡΗΓΟΡΙΟΥ
Με χρονικό ορόσημο την ερχόμενη Πέμπτη 16 του μηνός, η Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία και οι αρμόδιες υπηρεσίες της προετοιμάζονται για το επόμενο σημαντικό βήμα στην υλοποίηση των πετρελαϊκών τους σχεδιασμών. Στα χέρια των τεχνοκρατών της Κυβέρνησης βρίσκονται, ήδη, τρισδιάστατες αναλύσεις και δεδομένα, τα οποία κρίνονται ως ιδιαίτερα ενθαρρυντικά σ’ ό,τι αφορά το μέγεθος του υποθαλάσσιου πλούτου που εντοπίστηκε στη θαλάσσια οικονομική ζώνη του νησιού. Οι τρισδιάστατες αυτές εικόνες που λήφθηκαν πρόσφατα, κατόπιν ερευνών που η ίδια η Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία διενήργησε, αφορούν στα δύο από τα δεκατρία θαλάσσια τεμάχια της συγκεκριμένης περιοχής και έρχονται να προστεθούν στο, ήδη, θετικό σκηνικό που διαμορφώνεται.
Ενισχυτικό των δηλώσεων του κ. Κασίνη αποτελεί και η χθεσινοβραδινή δήλωση του εκπροσώπου της νορβηγικής εταιρείας PGS στο «Σίγμα», Μαρκ Σπένσερ Τζόουνς, με την οποία συνεργάζεται η Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, αναφορικά με τα ευρήματα των τρισδιάστατων ερευνών που έγιναν. Όπως ανέφερε, οι προοπτικές για το μέγεθος των κοιτασμάτων στη θαλάσσια περιοχή της Κύπρου είναι υποσχόμενες και πολύ ενθαρρυντικές.

Επτά αιτήσεις

Την ίδια ώρα, την ερχόμενη βδομάδα, περίπου επτά εταιρείες αναμένεται να καταθέσουν τελικά στο τραπέζι την αίτησή τους για συνεργασία με την κυπριακή Κυβέρνηση και κατ’ επέκταση την ουσιαστική και πρακτική εμπλοκή τους στις διαδικασίες έρευνας και εξόρυξης υδρογονανθράκων.
Οι μέχρι στιγμής εξελίξεις, πάντως, γύρω από την εκδήλωση ενδιαφέροντος από ξένες εταιρείες και πετρελαϊκούς κολοσσούς, σε σχέση με τον πρώτο γύρο αδειοδότησης, αφήνουν ικανοποιημένους τόσο τον αρμόδιο υπουργό Αντώνη Μιχαηλίδη όσο και το Διευθυντή της Υπηρεσίας Ενέργειας στο Υπουργείο Εμπορίου Σόλωνα Κασίνη, ο οποίος χθες υπογράμμισε ότι, πριν από το τέλος του χρόνου, η πρώτη φάση της διαδικασίας έκδοσης αδειών θα ολοκληρωθεί. «Οι εταιρείες θα υποβάλουν αιτήσεις, τώρα, για κάθε τεμάχιο χωριστά (από τα έντεκα που είναι διαθέσιμα αυτήν τη στιγμή), το οποίο έχουμε χωρομετρήσει», δήλωσε.

Γεώτρηση: 600 χιλ. δολάρια η μία

Σ΄ ό,τι αφορά την παρούσα φάση των διαδικασιών, ο Διευθυντής της Υπηρεσίας Ενέργειας σημείωσε πως το κόστος, για την κάθε εταιρεία που επιθυμεί να προχωρήσει σε γεωτρήσεις, είναι τεράστιο. «Γι’ αυτό το στάδιο των ερευνών οι προϋπολογισμοί τους πρέπει να είναι της τάξης των 50 - 100 εκ. δολαρίων, αν αναλογιστεί κανείς πως σήμερα τα γεωτρύπανα χρεώνουν γύρω στις 600 χιλιάδες δολάρια την ημέρα, για δοκιμαστικές γεωτρήσεις», είπε. Πρόκειται, λοιπόν, συνέχισε, για σοβαρές εταιρείες και ουσιαστικό κόστος.

Το Σεπτέμβρη ο δεύτερος γύρος

Στο δεύτερο γύρο αδειοδότησης, ο οποίος εκτιμάται ότι θα ξεκινήσει τις πρώτες μέρες του Σεπτέμβρη, θα περιληφθούν και τα δεκατρία τεμάχια της οικονομικής θαλάσσιας ζώνης της Κύπρου. Σύμφωνα με τον κ. Σόλωνα Κασίνη, η νέα αυτή διαδικασία, στην οποία θα συμπεριληφθούν και τα δεκατρία οικόπεδα, υπολογίζεται ότι θ’ αρχίσει στις αρχές του 2008.
Σ’ ό,τι αφορά το νέο κύκλο παροχής αδειών, ο Διευθυντής της Υπηρεσίας Ενέργειας σημείωσε ότι ο ίδιος, στις 4 - 7 Σεπτεμβρίου, κατόπιν σχετικής πρόσκλησης, θα βρεθεί στο Παρίσι και θα μιλήσει στις εργασίες συνεδρίου για τους υδρογονάνθρακες της Βορείου Αφρικής, ανακοινώνοντας την έναρξη του δεύτερου γύρου αδειοδότησης της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας.

Ενδιαφέρεται τώρα και η Κίνα

ΕΝΤΟΝΟ ενδιαφέρον για την εξόρυξη κοιτασμάτων πετρελαίου στην περιοχή της Κύπρου επιδεικνύει, στο μεταξύ, και η Κίνα. Ο πρεσβευτής της χώρας στην Κύπρο συναντήθηκε, χθες, με τον Υπουργό Εμπορίου και ενημερώθηκε για τη διαδικασία που θα ακολουθηθεί. Ο Κινέζος πρεσβευτής αναφέρθηκε στο ενδιαφέρον της χώρας του για το θέμα των πετρελαίων, αλλά δεν θέλησε να σχολιάσει τις απειλές της Τουρκίας εναντίον της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, παρά το γεγονός ότι η Άγκυρα εξακολουθεί να εκτοξεύει απειλές και να προειδοποιεί για τα κυριαρχικά της δικαιώματα, όπως ισχυρίζεται.
Ο εκπρόσωπος του Τουρκικού Υπουργείου Εξωτερικών αναφέρθηκε, χθες, στο δικαίωμα της χώρας του για εκμετάλλευση του θαλάσσιου πλούτου στην οικονομική ζώνη της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας και προειδοποίησε, εκ νέου, ότι η Τουρκία θα διαφυλάξει με θάρρος τα δικαιώματα που έχει επί της περιοχής αυτής.

Η Τουρκία δεν νομιμομοιείται

Νωρίτερα, ο Κυβερνητικός Εκπρόσωπος Βασίλης Πάλμας επανέλαβε ότι η Τουρκία δεν νομιμοποιείται ν’ αντιδρά με οποιονδήποτε τρόπο σε σχέση με το θέμα, από τη στιγμή που όλα γίνονται στο πλαίσιο της διεθνούς νομιμότητας. Απαντώντας σε άλλη ερώτηση, για ενδεχόμενο ενδιαφέρον από τρεις χώρες-μόνιμα μέλη του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας, ο κ. Πάλμας επισήμανε πως δεν πρέπει να πολιτικοποιείται το θέμα ή να δίνονται πολιτικές προεκτάσεις. Αυτό που μας ενδιαφέρει, κατέληξε, είναι αυτές οι εταιρείες που ενδιαφέρονται, να είναι εταιρείες που ανταποκρίνονται στις προδιαγραφές και έχουν το εκτόπισμα που πρέπει να έχουν, για να διεξάγουν όσο το δυνατόν καλύτερα τις έρευνες.

Ενώπιον της Υπηρεσίας Ασύλου εκκρεμούν πέραν των οκτώ χιλιάδων αιτήσεων από αλλοδαπούς, που αιτούνται πολιτικό άσυλο. Την αποκάλυψη αυτή έκανε χθες ο Υπουργός Εσωτερικών Χρίστος Πατσαλίδης, ο οποίος επισκέφθηκε το Τμήμα και είχε συνάντηση με το διευθυντή της Υπηρεσίας Μάκη Πολυδώρου. Με βάση τα στοιχεία που κατέχει η Κυβέρνηση, μετά το 2004 -χρονιά που εντάχθηκε η Κύπρος στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση και συνεχίστηκε η μερική άρση στους περιορισμούς διακίνησης από και προς τα κατεχόμενα- εισρέουν, κατ’ έτος, στις ελεύθερες περιοχές 5.000 αιτητές πολιτικού ασύλου, ενώ το ποσοστό των εγκρινόμενων αιτήσεων δεν υπερβαίνει το 1,5%.
Σύμφωνα με τον Υπουργό Εσωτερικών, κατά το 2007 υπήρχαν 4.000 περίπου αιτητές ασύλου, ενώ περίπου στον ίδιο αριθμό ανέρχονται και οι αιτήσεις που χρήζουν άμεσης εξέτασης. Χαρακτηριστικά, ο κ. Πατσαλίδης είπε ότι, ως Κύπρος, «έχουμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε ένα πολύ μεγάλο πρόβλημα και χρειάζεται όλοι να το χειριζόμαστε με μεγάλη ευαισθησία και να είμαστε πάρα πολύ σοβαροί, ακόμα και οι δημοσιογράφοι, διότι έχει και τις μέγιστες πολιτικές προεκτάσεις». Σημείωσε ακόμα ότι, «μετά το 2004, αυξήθηκε δραματικά ο αριθμός των αφίξεων αιτητών πολιτικού ασύλου και αυτό πρέπει να μας προβληματίσει».
Ο κ. Πατσαλίδης διερωτήθηκε, επίσης, «τι θα συμβεί με μια μεγάλη εισροή αιτητών από γειτονικές χώρες, στις οποίες υπάρχουν προβλήματα, διότι -ως Κύπρος- είμαστε η πόρτα της Ε.Ε. προς τη Μέση Ανατολή». Σε ερώτηση εάν έχει δοθεί το μήνυμα στους αιτητές ασύλου, ότι η Κύπρος είναι μια χώρα που εύκολα μπορεί να τους δεχθεί, ο Υπουργός Εσωτερικών είπε ότι, αντιθέτως, «μας κατηγορούν ότι είμαστε πολύ πιο αυστηροί».

Προσφυγική πολιτική

ΑΝΑΦΟΡΙΚΑ με τον τρόπο αντιμετώπισης όσων δεν τύχουν παραχώρησης πολιτικού ασύλου, ο Υπουργός Εσωτερικών είπε ότι «πρέπει να φύγουν από την Κύπρο». Τόνισε, επίσης, ότι «το θέμα ‘‘προσφυγική πολιτική και άσυλο’’ απασχολεί πάρα πολύ σοβαρά και την ίδια την Ευρώπη και ειδικότερα μετά την ένταξή μας στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ενωση, αποτελούμε έναν πόλο έλξης για αιτητές πολιτικού ασύλου».
Εξάλλου, στις δικές του δηλώσεις, ο διεθυντής της Υπηρεσίας Ασύλου Μάκης Πολυδώρου παραδέχθηκε ότι είναι χαμηλό το ποσοστό του 1,5%, που αντιστοιχεί σε αυτούς που λαμβάνουν πολιτικό άσυλο. Ωστόσο, υπέδειξε ότι «πρέπει να προστατέψουμε κάποιους ανθρώπους».
‘Οπως είπε ο κ. Πολυδώρου, η καθυστέρηση που παρατηρείται στην εξέταση αιτήσεων δεν είναι άσχετη με την εισροή αιτητών πολιτικού ασύλου «λόγω των κατεχομένων, διότι οι περισσότεροι αριθμοί έρχονται από τα κατεχόμενα». Καταλήγοντας, ανέφερε ότι η Υπηρεσία Ασύλου θα ενισχυθεί με τέσσερις ακόμα λειτουργούς.

H Στατιστική Υπηρεσία ανακοινώνει ότι έχει εκδώσει την έκθεση «ΕΓΓΡΑΦΕΣ ΜΗΧΑΝΟΚΙΝΗΤΩΝ ΟΧΗΜΑΤΩΝ», για την περίοδο Ιανουαρίου – Ιουλίου 2007.

Η έκδοση περιέχει στοιχεία για τις εγγραφές μηχανοκινήτων οχημάτων κατά κατηγορία, είδος καυσίμου, μάρκα, τύπο οχήματος, κυβισμό και καθαρό βάρος.

Οι συνολικές εγγραφές οχημάτων, κατά τους πρώτους επτά μήνες του 2007, αυξήθηκαν κατά 33,1% και έφθασαν τις 40.285, σε σύγκριση με 30.259 την περίοδο Ιανουαρίου – Ιουλίου 2006.

Οι εγγραφές ιδιωτικών αυτοκινήτων σαλούν, αυξήθηκαν σε 29.551, σε σύγκριση με 21.851 την αντίστοιχη περίοδο του 2006, δηλαδή υπήρξε αύξηση 35,2%.

New initiative for state music schools

THE STATE’S Music School in Limassol will officially begin operations next month.
The Education Ministry decided to open the island’s second music school following the success of the first in Nicosia, which opened last February.

The schools will work in the form of an all-day school, with pupils attending normal lyceum classes in the morning and continuing with four hours of music lessons from 2.30pm onwards.

These will include individual lessons for piano and any other musical instrument of their choice.

The aim of the Music School is to prepare and train pupils who wish to follow music as a career, while at the same time not depriving them of a general and complete education.

“We teach anything here, from jazz, to classical music, to Byzantine music,” the Education Ministry’s Maro Skordi, the woman in charge of the project, told the Cyprus Mail.

She said that parents initially appeared hesitant to enrol their kids, mainly because they were afraid of trying something that was so new.

“But we are slowly resolving our problems and parents are becoming more accustomed to the idea,” Skordi pointed out.

“Our aim is to help as many pupils as possible to achieve places in Greek as well as international universities.

“In the future, we would also like to co-operate with other European music schools to plan concerts and other such events.”

An evaluation was carried out to see how successful and effective the first school was in order to move ahead with its operation for a second year.

“You see, each pupil costs the state a lot of money,” Skordi explained. “Each pupil has two individual instrument lessons every school day, piano and any other instrument they choose.

“So for the time being, the state couldn't fund more than 20 pupils per school.”

But as Skordi pointed out, the state has paid for all of the schools’ equipment.

“The state has bought all the instruments you could imagine and they will be loaned out to pupils.

“It is a complete scholarship for talented children.”

Twenty pupils were chosen for each school, following personal interviews, as well as written and oral exams.

The Nicosia school is based at the Pancyprian Gymnasium, while in Limassol it is based at Lanitio Lyceum A.

The lessons will be offered for free, while pupils’ afternoon schedules will be flexible, meaning they can adjust the times and lessons to suit them.

The school has employed music teachers who specialise on various subjects, such as musical instruments, music theory and traditional music.

All new lessons, except individual instrument lessons, will be held in groups, with emphasis given on the active participation of pupils.

“The children seem to be really excited about attending the school. Despite it being hard work, they are enjoying it,” said Skordi.

Third grade gymnasium pupils should apply for a place in the Music School by the end of May.

Buses threaten strike if trams get the green light

THE INTRODUCTION of a tram system to Nicosia is on the table again, much to the displeasure of bus and taxi drivers across the capital.

Bus drivers have in fact threatened that if such an idea is even considered, they will go on an indefinite strike in September.

But the Mayor of Strovolos, Savvas Eliofotou, who is against the idea of a tram system for the time being, said this was an idea that always came up during discussions over the island’s appalling public transport system.

“Every time a transport problem crops up, the idea to introduce the tram appears,” Eliofotou told the Cyprus Mail.

“But there are so many simpler things that can be done before something like the tram is imported. Such as upgrading the existing transportation system and creating a system for school pupils. Have you noticed that when schools are closed, the transport situation suddenly improves?”

He pointed out that a number of studies had already been carried out to see how viable a tram system would be in Cyprus; they all showed that for the time being, the idea was not to the island’s best interests.

“I am not against the tram; this can be done in the future. But first we must sort out our existing buses and our roads,” said Eliofotou, adding: “Even if they do decide to create trams, it will take up to eight years.”

Creating an independent transport body, much like the Water Board, would be a very positive step in the direction of improving transport problems in Cyprus, the Strovolos Mayor suggested.

“If the government decides to set up an organisation, which it will fund and create a legal framework for, I believe that only then will all these problems be solved,” he said.

Meanwhile, the head of the Public Works Department, Alecos Michaelides, has said that no final decision has been made. The idea of the tram, he added, was being examined as a possibility to improve public transport and make the island’s towns more public-friendly.

Michaelides said that while a study was being carried out to see whether the tram system would be viable in Cyprus, he agreed the current public transport system should be upgraded.

He pointed out that even if the tram did operate in Cyprus, this would not mean that buses would be out of work.

But bus drivers have warned that they will pull the hand break up in September if procedures begin to introduce trams.

“What is going on is outrageous and it appears that some are aiming at stalling procedures to offer buses the mass transportation of the public,” said Giorgos Kyriacou, the co-ordinator of regional bus companies, adding that this includes upgrading buses, intensifying bus routes, reducing fares and public funding.

He warned that bus drivers intended to take drastic measures if the tram idea goes ahead.

Back in May, Transport Minster Harris Thrassou unveiled a massive £275 million plan to increase public transport usage from two to ten per cent by 2015.

With declining numbers using the island’s only public transport, the bus, the plan envisaged school buses everywhere, crackdowns on illegal parking, increased pedestrian areas, new buses, brand new central bus stations in all towns, bus lanes, better bus stops, a park and ride system, and electronic ticketing machines.

Thrassou said that in 1980 buses carried 13 million passengers but by 2004 this had fallen to only 3.5 million, despite an influx of foreigners who generally use public transport. In fact, the number fell below 3 million in 2000 but has since climbed slightly.

During the same period, the number of private cars in Cyprus has risen from 200,000 to 520,000, making the car the preferred mode of transport for 85 per cent of people living on the island.

Only 12 per cent of respondents consider themselves pedestrians compared to only two per cent who say they use public transport. Only bicycles are less popular, with one per cent saying they cycle as a mode of transport.

Λευκωσία: Αύξηση στη διακίνηση αεροσκαφών και φορτίου σημειώθηκε τον Ιούνιο του 2007, σε σύγκριση με την κίνηση του ίδιου μήνα πέρσι, στα αεροδρόμια Λάρνακας και Πάφου. Όσον αφορά στη διακίνηση επιβατών, στη Λάρνακα αυξήθηκε, ενώ στην Πάφο παρατηρήθηκε πτώση. Σύμφωνα με τα στατιστικά στοιχεία που τηρούνται από το Τμήμα Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας, κατά τη διάρκεια του Ιουνίου 2007 παρατηρήθηκε ότι, σε σύγκριση με την αεροπορική κίνηση του ίδιου μήνα του 2006, σημειώθηκε αύξηση στον αερολιμένα Λάρνακας στη διακίνηση αεροσκαφών κατά 5,9%, στη διακίνηση επιβατών κατά 4,1% και στη διακίνηση φορτίου κατά 11,5%. Όπως αναφέρεται σε ανακοίνωση του Υπουργείου Συγκοινωνιών και Έργων, στον αερολιμένα Πάφου σημειώθηκε αύξηση στη διακίνηση αεροσκαφών κατά 1,0% και στη διακίνηση φορτίου κατά 132,4%, ενώ στη διακίνηση επιβατών σημειώθηκε μείωση κατά 3,0%. Ο Ιούνιος μαζί με τον Ιούλιο και τον Αύγουστο ανήκουν στους μήνες της μεγάλης επιβατικής αιχμής όπως επίσης και της μεγάλης διακίνησης αεροσκαφών.

Αμέλεια που έφερε χάος
Νοσοκομείο, ΙΚΕΑ, καταστήματα, χωρίς καμιά πρόνοια για την κυκλοφορία
Τρέχουν και δεν προφτάνουν στο Τμήμα Δημοσίων Έργων για να περιορίσουν το τροχαίο χάος, που δημιουργήθηκε με τη λειτουργία του νέου Γενικού Νοσοκομείου και το οποίο θα επιδεινωθεί με τη λειτουργία του πολυκαταστήματος ΙΚΕΑ καθώς και νέων καταστημάτων έναντι του Νοσοκομείου αλλά και την επικείμενη μετακίνηση εκεί τεσσάρων κυβερνητικών υπηρεσιών. Οι Λευκωσιάτες ξέχασαν αυτές τις μέρες την ταλαιπωρία, αλλά με την επιστροφή τους από τις διακοπές θα την βρουν και πάλι μπροστά τους, αφού η επίλυση του προβλήματος δεν προβλέπεται σύντομη. Η πυκνή τροχαία κίνηση, που παρατηρείται μεταξύ του κυκλικού κόμβου στην είσοδο της Λευκωσίας και του κόμβου του Νοσοκομείου και που επεκτείνεται σχεδόν μέχρι το κέντρο της πρωτεύουσας, εκτιμάται ότι οφείλεται στο γεγονός ότι το κράτος δεν κατάφερε να προνοήσει και να λάβει μέτρα για την οφθαλμοφανή κατάσταση που θα δημιουργείτο. Το χάος αποδίδεται αποκλειστικά στην έλλειψη συντονισμού και την αμέλεια των αρμοδίων υπηρεσιών. Τεράστιο είναι το πρόβλημα και για τα ασθενοφόρα αφού εγκλωβίζονται στην κίνηση και καθυστερούν να φτάσουν στο νοσοκομείο.
Παράπονα διατυπώνουν και οι επιχειρηματίες και οι εργαζόμενοι στην περιοχή ενώ οδηγοί ισχυρίζονται ότι για να διανύσουν την απόσταση από τον κόμβο εισόδου της Λευκωσίας μέχρι τον κόμβο του νοσοκομείου χρειάζονται 25 λεπτά.

Αερογέφυρα... κατόπιν εορτής

Προγραμματίζεται η κατασκευή αερογέφυρας πάνω από το δρόμο Λευκωσίας - Λεμεσού η οποία θα αρχίζει από τον κυκλικό κόμβο Στεφανίδη και θα περνά πάνω από το δρόμο Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού και στη συνέχεια θα «προσγειώνεται» και θα συνδέεται με τη λεωφόρο Σταυρού.
Επιστολή υπουργού Υγείας
Ακόμη και το υπουργείο Υγείας έφτασε στο σημείο να κρούει τον κώδωνα του κινδύνου, αφού στην περιοχή εγκλωβίζονται και τα ασθενοφόρα, γεγονός που μπορεί να θέσει σε κίνδυνο ανθρώπινες ζωές. Ήδη, ο υπουργός Υγείας έστειλε επιστολή στις αρμόδιες υπηρεσίες και ζητά να ληφθούν το συντομότερο μέτρα προτού επιδεινωθεί περαιτέρω η κατάσταση.

Η πλήρης έλλειψη συντονισμού και η απρονοησία των κρατικών υπηρεσιών επιδείνωσαν το κυκλοφοριακό χάος της πρωτεύουσας και οδήγησαν στην ταλαιπωρία χιλιάδων οδηγών και επιβατών οι οποίοι κινούνται από την περιοχή του νέου Γενικού Νοσοκομείου μέχρι και τις παρυφές του κέντρου της Λευκωσίας. Το πρόβλημα δημιουργήθηκε επειδή σταδιακά οι αρμόδιες υπηρεσίες εξέδωσαν άδειες για αναπτύξεις (Νέο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο, πολυκαταστήματα, εμπορικά και άλλα καταστήματα) χωρίς να ληφθεί υπόψη η επικείμενη λειτουργία του ΙΚΕΑ (που εκτιμάται ότι θα επιδεινώσει την ήδη βεβαρημένη κατάσταση) χωρίς να μεριμνήσουν για τη διαχείριση της τροχαίας κίνησης. Ειδικά στην περιοχή του Γενικού Νοσοκομείου, μεταξύ του κόμβου στην είσοδο της Λευκωσίας και του κόμβου του Νοσοκομείου, οι οδηγοί κινούνται σε ρυθμούς χελώνας. Τις ώρες αιχμής, τόσον το πρωί που οι εργαζόμενοι κινούνται προς την είσοδο της Λευκωσίας καθοδόν προς τη δουλειά τους, όσον και το απόγευμα κατά την επιστροφή τους, η περιοχή του Νοσοκομείου μοιάζει απροσπέλαστη. Πρόβλημα αντιμετωπίζουν ακόμη και τα ασθενοφόρα και δεν είναι απίθανο να χαθούν και ζωές από τις καθυστερήσεις που παρατηρούνται. Ήδη, όπως πληροφορείται ο «Φ», σχετική επιστολή προς τους αρμόδιους φορείς απέστειλε το υπουργείο Υγείας εφιστώντας την προσοχή τους για το πρόβλημα διακίνησης των ασθενοφόρων που παρατηρείται. Εξάλλου, οδηγοί διαμαρτύρονται για την κατάσταση που επικρατεί και υποστηρίζουν πως για να διανύσει κάποιος την απόσταση από τον κόμβο της εισόδου της Λευκωσία μέχρι τον κόμβο του Νοσοκομείου και για να επιστρέψει στον κόμβο της εισόδου κατά τις ώρες αιχμής χρειάζεται περίπου πενήντα λεπτά, δηλαδή όση ώρα χρειάζεται για να ξεκινήσει κανείς από τη Λεμεσό και να φτάσει στην είσοδο της Λευκωσίας διανύοντας περίπου 90 χιλιόμετρα. Πάντως, σήμερα το πρόβλημα είναι. λυμένο αφού οι μισοί κάτοικοι της Λευκωσίας απουσιάζουν σε διακοπές και τα σχολεία είναι κλειστά. Αν ληφθεί υπόψη ότι στην περιοχή του Νοσοκομείου θα μεταφερθούν και κυβερνητικές υπηρεσίες καθώς και η Νοσηλευτική Σχολή, με την παράλληλη λειτουργία καταστημάτων έναντι του Νοσοκομείου, γίνεται αντιληπτό, ότι η κατάσταση για τους οδηγούς θα είναι τραγική, εκτός και αν ληφθούν αμέσως μέτρα. Η κατάσταση έφτασε στο απροχώρητο και γίνονται σκέψεις ακόμη και για κατασκευή υπέργειας γέφυρας πάνω από το δρόμο Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού ώστε να δοθεί έξοδος στους οδηγούς που θα εγκλωβίζονται στην περιοχή. Το ερώτημα που εγείρεται είναι γιατί αφού διαφαινόταν εδώ και χρόνια ότι θα αυξηθεί κατακόρυφα η τροχαία κίνηση δεν ελήφθησαν μέτρα ή ακόμη γιατί μετετράπη η περιοχή σε εμπορική και δόθηκαν άδειες για ανέγερση μεγάλων καταστημάτων τα οποία συγκεντρώνουν μεγάλο αριθμό πελατών, δίχως να δοθούν λύσεις για την προσέλευση και αποχώρηση τους. ΛΕΖΑΝΤΑ: Η κατασκευή του νέου Γενικού Νοσοκομείου σχεδιάστηκε εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια. Τα έργα επίσης διάρκεσαν αρκετά χρόνια. Αλλά, δεν λήφθηκαν ποτέ ουσιαστικά μέτρα διαχείρησης της ολοένεα και περισσότερο αυξανόμενης κυκλοφορίας, η οποία σε ένα μεγάλο βαθμό ήταν προβλεπτή. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι ότι σήμερα ταλαιπωρούνται οι ασθενείς, το προσωπικό του Νοσοκομείου, οι κάτοικοι της περιοχής Λατσιών, αλλά και όσοι τολμήσουν να κατευθυνθούν στη Λευκωσία μέσω των δύο κόμβων. >> εδωσαν αδειες Νέο Γενικό Νοσοκομείο Πολυκαταστήματα ΙΚΕΑ + Νοσηλευτική Σχολή + Κυβερνητικές υπηρεσίες ΤΟ ΧΑΟΣ ΜΕ ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΑΡΙΘΜΟΥΣ >> 50 λεπτά χρειάζεται κανείς για να διανύσει την απόσταση από τον κόμβο της εισόδου της Λευκωσίας μέχρι τον κόμβο του νέου νοσοκομείου κατά τις ώρες αιχμής. Όση ώρα δηλαδή, χρειάζεσαι για να κάνεις τη διαδρομή Λευκωσία-Λεμεσός. >> Από το μποτιλιάρισμα δεν γλυτώνουν τα ασθενοφόρα. Τα οποία χάνουν πολύτιμα λεπτά μέχρι να καταφέρουν οι οδηγοί τους να ξεφύγουν από το κυκλοφοριακό "μπλόκο". Μάλιστα το υπ. Υγείας ζήτησε με επιστολή από τους αρμόδιους φορείς τη λήψη μέτρων προτού να είναι αργά. >> Πέραν της ταλαιπωρίας εκατοντάδων οδηγών, προκαλείται περιβαλλοντικό κόστος από το «σημειωτόν» των αυτοκινήτων και τα καυσαέρια που εκπέμπονται. Παράλληλα προκαλείται κόστος από την κατανάλωση καυσίμων αλλά και τις φθορές των αυτοκινήτων τα οποία κινούνται κυρίως με την πρώτη. >>Παράπονα για την κατάσταση που επικρατεί εκφράζουν οι επιχειρηματίες και οι υπάλληλοι των επιχειρήσεων που δραστηριοποιούνται στη λεωφόρο Καλαμών και τους γύρω δρόμους αλλά και οι κάτοικοι Λατσιών, ειδικά όσοι διαμένουν προς την πλευρά του Νοσοκομείου. Εξάλλου, καταστηματάρχες άρχισαν να παραπονιούνται ότι χάνουν πελάτες αφού η διακίνηση τους στην περιοχή αυτή είναι προβληματική. ΤΑ ΜΕΤΡΑ που ΘΑ λάβουν κατόπιν εορτής 1. Ανάκληση μονοδρόμησης της εξόδου (επί του δρόμου Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού) που οδηγεί προς το ψυχιατρείο και καταλήγει στον κόμβο που δημιουργήθηκε παρά τον αυτοκινητολιμένα «Στεφανίδη». 2. Κατασκευή υπέργειας γέφυρας από τον κυκλικό κόμβο Στεφανίδη και πάνω από το δρόμο Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού. 3. Βύθιση του κόμβου στην είσοδο της Λευκωσίας από την οδό Καλαμών με κατεύθυνση την λεωφόρο Τροόδους. ΤΜΗΜΑ ΔΗΜΟΣΙΩΝ ΕΡΓΩΝ Ετοιμάζουν "μικρές ανάσες" ΤΟ ΤΜΗΜΑ Δημοσίων Έργων τρέχει να περισώσει ότι περισώζεται, αν και υπήρχαν σχεδιασμοί που αν υλοποιούνταν θα περιόριζαν το πρόβλημα χωρίς να το επιλύσουν. Η προϊσταμένη του κλάδου μελετών του τμήματος Δημοσίων Έργων κ. Κρύσταλλα Μαλλούππα, η οποία ανέλαβε καθήκοντα, αναγνωρίζει ότι αυξήθηκε η τροχαία κίνηση στην περιοχή του Νοσοκομείου και προσθέτει ότι θα αυξηθεί περαιτέρω με την κατασκευή τεσσάρων νέων κυβερνητικών κτιρίων. Σύμφωνα με την κ. Μαλλούππα δρομολογήθηκε η λήψη μέτρων και το Τμήμα εργάζεται πυρετωδώς για την υλοποίηση τους με στόχο να αμβλυνθούν τα κυκλοφοριακά προβλήματα της περιοχής. Όπως είπε, ετοιμάστηκε πρόγραμμα και σύντομα θα εκπονηθεί και το χρονοδιάγραμμα υλοποίησης του. Ωστόσο γίνεται αντιληπτό ότι ακόμη για την υλοποίηση των σχεδίων θα απαιτηθούν, ανάλογα με το έργο, από αρκετούς μήνες μέχρι και μερικά χρόνια, αφού μόνο οι διαδικασίες της προσφοράς για κάθε έργο μπορεί να χρειαστεί ένα-δύο χρόνια για να ολοκληρωθεί. Τα δύο έργα τα οποία το τμήμα Δημοσίων Έργων εκτιμά ότι θα προσφέρουν μία μικρή ανάσα σε αριθμό οδηγών είναι η ανάκληση της μονοδρόμησης της εξόδου (επί του δρόμου Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού) που οδηγεί προς το ψυχιατρείο και καταλήγει στον κόμβο που δημιουργήθηκε σχετικά πρόσφατα παρά τον αυτοκινητολιμένα «Στεφανίδη». Με την ανάκληση της μονοδρόμησης και αφού εκτελεστούν μερικά έργα, οι οδηγοί θα μπορούν να έχουν πρόσβαση στο δρόμο Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού, αν και εκφράζονται φόβοι ότι με τη λύση αυτή η τροχαία κίνηση θα μεταφέρεται απλώς σε άλλα σημεία. Το έργο που εκτιμάται ότι θα βοηθήσει αρκετούς οδηγούς καθώς και επισκέπτες των γύρω καταστημάτων είναι η κατασκευή υπέργειας γέφυρας η οποία θα αρχίζει από τον κυκλικό κόμβο Στεφανίδη και θα περνά πάνω από το δρόμο Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού και στη συνέχεια θα «προσγειώνεται» και θα συνδέεται με τη λεωφόρο Σταυρού. Η γέφυρα η οποία θεωρείται ότι αποτελεί λύση ανάγκης θα εξυπηρετήσει μέρος των αναγκών του οδικού δικτύου, ενώ η λεωφόρος Σταυρού θα προεκταθεί (διερχόμενη από τη σχολή «ΦΑΛΚΟΝ») μέχρι τα γραφεία της ΑΗΚ και στη συνέχεια θα ενωθεί (με την κατασκευή κυκλικού κόμβου) με το δρόμο Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού στο ύψος όπου σήμερα βρίσκεται ο δρόμος που οδηγεί στην Αθαλάσσα, σε μικρή απόσταση από τα φώτα τροχαίας «Καλησπέρα». Η κ. Μαλλούππα ανέφερε ότι τα κατασκευαστικά σχέδια της λεωφόρου Σταυρού είναι ήδη έτοιμα. Εξετάζουν και βύθιση του κόμβου στην είσοδο Λ/σίας ΕΝΑ άλλο έργο είναι η βύθιση του κόμβου στην είσοδο της Λευκωσίας, (όπου σήμερα παρατηρείται πυκνή τροχαία κίνηση) από την οδό Καλαμών με κατεύθυνση τη λεωφόρο Τροόδους, ώστε να φεύγουν, σχετικά εύκολα, τα αυτοκίνητα που θα προέρχονται από τα Λατσιά μέσω του κόμβου παρά το Γενικό Νοσοκομείο. Παράλληλα, για να αποφευχθεί η μεταφορά της κίνησης στα φώτα τροχαίας «Ορφανίδη» θα δημιουργηθεί στη θέση τους κυκλικός κόμβος. Κυκλικός κόμβος θα δημιουργηθεί και επί του δρόμου Λευκωσίας-Λεμεσού στο ύψος του σταδίου ΓΣΠ. Τέλος, κάποτε θα κατασκευαστεί και ο περιμετρικός δρόμος Λευκωσίας.
