View Full Version : Ocean Park in Manila Bay
nayki September 16th, 2007, 07:59 AM Actually the whole metro manila must take care of the environment especially the cities where the Pasig river flows not only Manila. Majority of the garbage in Manila bay is not from the city of Manila but it originated from the depressed areas along Manila Bay and Pasig river in Mandaluyong, Pasig, Malabon, and Navotas.
But despite all of this problems I'm sure The Manila Ocean Park will be successful. :)
pau_p1 September 17th, 2007, 04:37 PM yeah... let's not prejudice the project... let's not put our hopes high though.. but still let's not prejudice...
at least when this constructed.. this will add to the profitable establishments in the country and an additional tourist attraction, be it local or foreign tourists... Manila being the main entry point of the country needs these kinds of investments to help pour the money into our economy....
I just hope that this will be as successful as Ocean Adventure of Subic...

don't konw if this 'll be an off topic or w/ the topic question...
what's the difference between the subic and the manila ocean parks? they both showcase creatures in the water..:) alam ko mas mahal ang subic..
kiretoce September 17th, 2007, 10:21 PM ^^ I really don't know but I'm guessing one is an "animal rescue, research, and conservation" facility, while the other is more of the "entertainment variety."

agree with u
pi_malejana September 18th, 2007, 07:35 AM i also noticed that ocean adventure is someone secluded and very very private in terms of where it stands.. it's not that accesible and when going there,, it must be planned weeks ahead.. while in MANILA, pag may pera, gala na!! "field trip" kuno na-naman yan ng mga kolehiyala.. ahhihi..
pau_p1 September 18th, 2007, 08:01 AM Ocean Adventure basically offers dolphin and whales shows... they also feature sea lions.... they have an enclosed area containing an assortment of different tropical sea creatures from jellyfishes to clown fishes to crustaceans...
I think Manila Ocean Park will offer more... they have the underwater walkthrough aquarium where the sea creatures are combined... and I think they'll be featuring dolphins shows also...
Ocean Adventure admission costs P450... and Manila Ocean Park is at US$10 (about P470)...
aside from stunts.. the shows in Ocean Adventure aims to teach visitors of the importance of these marine creatures and how to help save them..
also.. Ocean Adventure is the first open sea activity area in Asia... the dolphin and whales perform on the sea coast and not in an artificial tank which Manila Ocean Park will have...

Ok naman. Simple. But being Manila's own ocean park, yeah, I was hoping the design would be stunning... oh well...
IMO, they should have done a curvy sloping front and back man lang. Would help during typhoons rin.

Actually, the walkalator is a neccesity in underwater walkways. Without a walkalator, foot traffic will be a major problem in enclosed tunnels. People would have the tendency to stay longer and this will be a foot traffic nightmare. Staying longer is just one problem, what about people trying to go back to the tunnel? With a walkalator, people will be moving forward thus removing the problem of people staying longer or going back and forth inside the tunnel. That's why, we should have a walkalator inside the tunnel. It's not for any aesthetic purpose but purely for efficiency.
Sinjin P. September 27th, 2007, 06:12 AM ^ Wasn't it planned to be 200 meters?
bustero September 27th, 2007, 11:14 AM Nope, it's not long at all, I don't know if it's 25 meters but the design is similar to Sydney that there seems to be 2 walkthrough tubes in the same fish tank. (not sure) anyway it's not like oceanpark that there is a big circular tank that goes round and round!

mwg12a September 30th, 2007, 11:58 PM Yeah, there is a point there with ventrro's comment. However, and I don't know how bad it will the there in Manila, but there are several huge oceanic museums type out there that has tunnel with no walkalators in it, such as Chattanooga Tennesee's Aquarium. It didn't seems to have obstructions in those tunnels inspite of the big influx of tourist pouring in daily. Same goes with New Orleans Aquarium ( I don't know if it still exist after Hurricane Katrina).
kalbongdad October 1st, 2007, 07:31 AM the walkalator is 25 meters...about 75ft.....

Finally, world-class marine park in Manila (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/metro/view_article.php?article_id=95168)
Margaux Ortiz, PDI
MANILA, Philippines -- Imagine going to Manila Bay and coming face-to-face with a shark or even a school of fierce barracudas. Come December, this awesome scene would be experienced by Filipinos -- adults and children alike -- with the completion of the Manila Ocean Park just behind the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park.
The ocean park, a P1-billion project of Singaporean and Malaysian investors, is the first world-class marine park to adopt a “fusion concept,” according to Manila Ocean Park president Lim Chee Yong. Lim said the concept entailed bringing together an oceanarium, a mall, a boutique hotel, a restaurant row and open marine habitats -- where marine enthusiasts could learn to swim and dive with the fishes.
“The park will house the first and largest aquarium facility in the Philippines,” Lim announced during a walking tour with the media Wednesday at the site. He said that both the oceanarium and the open marine habitats would contain 12,000 cubic meters of seawater featuring 300 marine species indigenous to the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
Larger than Sentosa’s
Lim proudly said that the Manila Ocean Park would be among the most advanced ocean parks in Asia -- with an area larger than the famous Sentosa oceanarium in Singapore. “Sentosa is 6,000 square meters while this one is 8,000 sqm,” Lim said. He also compared Manila’s upcoming marine park with Hong Kong’s Ocean Park, “which has lots of fun rides but showcases a smaller oceanarium.”[/B]
Species from Philippine waters
Robert Dean Barbers, Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) general manager, said that unlike other oceanariums in Asia, the Manila Ocean Park would be getting marine species from Philippine waters. “All over the world, people have been saying that our country is the center of marine biodiversity,” Barbers said. “This is the time to be proud and show the world what we have,” the PTA head said.
Lim said the project would be composed of three phases, with the oceanarium as the first phase. It would be completed and opened to the public this December. “The second phase, which includes the marine-themed mall and the hotel, and the third phase, the open marine habitats, would be completed next year,” Lim said.
Entrance fee
He said the Manila Ocean Park would be affordable to all -- P250 for students, and P350 to P400 for regular patrons. Aside from providing jobs to 2,000 Filipinos, the project would enable the government to earn P20 million annually in rental fees. “After 5 years, there would be an incremental increase of 5 or 10 percent per year. We would also get a share from the income,” Barbers said. During the walking tour conducted as a “sneak peek” for the media, officials and personnel of the Manila Ocean Park showed the different parts of the oceanarium, now 80 percent complete.
The “oceanarium journey” is divided into six sections, each one carrying a Filipino name to exhibit national pride, according to the park’s vice president Cristina Romualdez. The first section, called Agos (Flow), features a rainforest-theme with eight tanks containing freshwater species.
“This part of the oceanarium -- the only open area in the facility -- shows the interconnectedness between the water and land,” Romualdez said. Agos would also feature an artificial waterfall and a touch pool, where children could interact with creatures such as starfish and shrimps. The next section, called Bahura or the Reef, would exhibit artificial corals in 48 tanks, complete with their scientific and common names, and their roles in the ecosystem. Laot (Fishing Ground), on the other hand, would feature big fish and Eagle-spotted rays in a long tank.
Main attraction
The main attraction of the oceanarium is a 25-meter long walkway tunnel with 220-degree curved acrylic walls. “Other oceanarium tunnels only have 180-degree curved walls. The Manila Ocean Park tunnel in effect, would give patrons a better viewing experience,” Romualdez said.
She said one wall of the tunnel would feature corals and small fishes, while the other wall would exhibit big fishes like sharks and rays. A school of barracudas would be seen swimming in a large tank at the Kalaliman (The Deep) section of the oceanarium. There would also be a shark tank and an overhead aquarium featuring the breathtaking beauty of rays, Romualdez said.
Educational facility
“We are largely an educational facility. As much as possible, we want to promote the conservation and preservation of marine species,” Romualdez said, pointing out that the park has been working very closely with government agencies such as the Department of Education and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. She said the Manila Ocean Park would not include protected and endangered species such as whale sharks and other sea mammals.
A team of marine biologists and scientists has been working to ensure that the types of fish put together could live well with each other in the tanks, Romualdez said. “We are very careful about the fish display. We are aware that we have a responsibility also -- both to the public and the environment,” she said. Manila Ocean Park is owned by China Oceanis Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of China Oceanis Inc., a Singaporean-registered firm that has operated four oceanariums in China.

--------------------In Other News--------------------------------------------
MANILA, Philippines - Scientists exploring a deep ocean basin in search of species isolated for millions of years found marine life believed to be previously undiscovered, including a tentacled orange worm and an unusual black jellyfish.
Project leader Dr. Larry Madin said Tuesday that U.S. and Philippine scientists collected about 100 different specimens in a search in the Celebes Sea south of the Philippines.
Madin, of the Massachusetts-based Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, said the sea is at the heart of the "coral triangle" bordered by the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia — a region recognized by scientists as having a high degree of biological diversity.
The deepest part of the Celebes Sea is 16,500 feet. The team was able to explore to a depth of about 9,100 feet using a remotely operated camera.
"This is probably the center where many of the species evolved and spread to other parts of the ocean, so it's going back to the source in many ways," Madin told a group of journalists, government officials, students and U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney and her staff.
The project involved the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and National Geographic Magazine in cooperation with the Philippine government, which also provided the exploration ship.
The expedition was made up of more than two dozen scientists and a group from National Geographic, including Emory Kristof, the underwater photographer who was part of the team that found the wreckage of the Titanic in 1985.
The group returned to Manila on Tuesday after spending about two weeks in the Celebes Sea off Tawi-Tawi, the Philippines southernmost provincial archipelago nearly 700 miles south of Manila.
Madin said the specimens they collected included several possibly newly discovered species. One was a sea cucumber that is nearly transparent which could swim by bending its elongated body. Another was a black jellyfish found near the sea floor.
The most striking creature found was a spiny orange-colored worm that had 10 tentacles like a squid, Madin said. "We don't know what it is ... it might be something new," he said.
He said it would take "a few more weeks" of research to determine whether the species are newly discovered. He expects to release a report by early next month.
Madin said the Celebes Sea, being surrounded by islands and shallow reefs, is partially isolated now and may have been more isolated millions of years ago, leading scientists to believe that "there may be groups of organisms that have been contained and kept within" the basin since then.
"That makes it an interesting place to go and look to see what we might find," he said.

World's smallest fish title in dispute, new marine species is 20% smaller
Rhett A. Butler, mongabay.com
REVIEW: Researchers dispute last week's claim of world's smallest fish in Sumatra. Evidence of an even smaller fish—a species of marine anglerfish 20 percent smaller than the carp found in southeast Asia—is presented by a University of Washington professor of aquatic and fisheries sciences. In a release from the University of Washington, professor Pietsch describes the tiny, monster-like anglerfish, Photocorynus spiniceps, found in the Philippines.
Flap over fishes: Who's the smallest of them all?
University of Washington release
http://www.mongabay.com/images/external/2006/0130anglerfish.jpg
This 46 mm (1.8 inches) female Photocorynus spiniceps has what looks like a small nub in the middle of her back. Actually, that's a 6.2 mm (less than a quarter of an inch) long male, the world's smallest known, sexually mature vertebrate. Image courtesy of Ted Pietsch at the University of Washington.
The authors of a paper in last week's Proceedings of the Royal Society of London Section B, who say their 7.9 mm-long fish from a peat swamp in Southeast Asia is the smallest fish and vertebrate known, have failed to make note of work published last fall that describes sexually mature, male anglerfishes measuring 6.2 mm to 7.4 mm in length.
The 6.2 mm specimen is by far the smallest of any vertebrate, beating the recent claim by a full 1.7 mm, according to Ted Pietsch, a University of Washington professor of aquatic and fisheries sciences, who has described the specimen.
Pietsch includes information about the tiny specimen, collected in the Philippines, in a review of what's known about reproduction in anglerfishes, so called because they have bioluminescent lures growing from their heads that they wave or cause to blink in order to attract prey to their mouths. The work appeared in the September issue of Ichthyological Research, published by the Ichthyological Society of Japan.
In the "Summary and Conclusions" section of that paper, Pietsch wrote of specimens of Photocorynus spiniceps, the smallest of which was 6.2 mm. Pietsch has the histological evidence that it is a mature male.
http://www.mongabay.com/images/external/2006/0130anglerfish2.jpg
Closeup of the 6.2 mm (less than a quarter of an inch) long male Photocorynus spiniceps anglerfish, the world's smallest known, sexually mature vertebrate. Image courtesy of Ted Pietsch at the University of Washington.
The male is attached to the middle of the back of a 46 mm long female Photocorynus spiniceps because that is how they mate.
It's called sexual parasitism and in five of the 11 families of anglerfishes, the males are tiny compared to the females and fuse for life to their mates by biting onto the sides, backs or bellies of a female. An attached male – even two, three or up to eight, depending on the family – essentially turns the female into a hermaphrodite, providing her body with everything she needs to reproduce. For the task, the 6.2 mm male, for instance, has testes so huge they nearly fill his entire body cavity, crowding his other internal organs.
The female takes care of swimming, eating – everything.
Anglerfishes live in deep water off both U.S. coasts and across the world's oceans. Home includes some of the most desolate stretches of the seafloor on Earth. Scientists estimate that 80 percent of the females, many of which live 25 or 30 years, never encounter a male. So it makes sense that anglerfish have evolved this strategy for reproducing, Pietsch says.
The sexually parasitic males don't have the lures typical of males of non-parasitic anglerfishes, instead their tiny bodies are dominated by nostrils – to detect females – and large eyes to scrutinize the female's lure. The male makes certain the female is of his family before biting onto her.
The specimen Pietsch describes is borrowed from the vertebrate collection of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Along with including information in his published work, Pietsch's findings about the specimen were presented and illustrated at the Seventh Indo-Pacific Fish Conference in Taiwan last May.
"There are always difficulties in talking about the smallest – would that be length, volume or weight – the debate goes round and round," Pietsch says. The co-authors of the paper in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London Section B, two of whom Pietsch knows, call the fish they found "the world's smallest vertebrate" and compare lengths.
They also compare numbers of vertebrae. On that count, Pietsch's Photocorynus spiniceps scores an 18 and Paedocypris progenetica, the subject of this week's paper, scores 33 to 35.

Finally, world-class marine park in Manila
By Margaux Ortiz
Inquirer
10/18/2007
He also compared Manila’s upcoming marine park with Hong Kong’s Ocean Park, “which has lots of fun rides but showcases a smaller oceanarium.”
Manila Ocean Park is owned by China Oceanis Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of China Oceanis Inc., a Singaporean-registered firm that has operated four oceanariums in China.

hiiamdib October 18th, 2007, 09:56 PM do you think tourist will flock our oceanarium? well we showcase Philippine biodiversity right? for sure they don't have that hehehe. This is bigger than Sentosa right? than hong kong?
pau_p1 October 19th, 2007, 05:17 AM well.. of course tourists will flock the place.. I'm sure that the local travel agencies will include the Ocean Park in their travel itineraries for their clients... plus this would be an added attraction of the city... so this will be added in info sheets and sites for tourist spots in the country.... also, they'd probably woo schools to add the park in their field trips also...
this is great... and it is 80% complete now.. wow... I'll try to visit this in January when I come back from holiday vacation....
I checked Underwater World of Sentosa site.. and they're travellator tunnel is 83 meters long...

Manila Ocean Park opens in December

The Philippines may be the center of marine diversity in the world, but ironically, the country doesn’t have an oceanarium to boast of, like the ones in Hong Kong, Singapore or Japan.
"Better late than never," remarked Robert Dean Barbers, Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) general manager, as the country is set to open its first world-class marine park in December.
The Php1.2 -billion Manila Ocean Park, located behind the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park in Manila, is the world’s first marine theme park to adopt a "fusion concept", housing an oceanarium, a mall, a boutique hotel and open marine habitats.
"All over the world, people have been saying that our country is the center of marine biodiversity. This is the time to be proud and show the world what we have," Barbers said.
The Biggest in Asia
Manila Ocean Park president Lim Chee Yong proudly said that the marine park would be among the most advanced ocean parks in Asia. It could also well be one of the biggest in Asia with an area larger than the famous Sentosa oceanarium in Singapore.
"Sentosa is 6,000 square meters while this one is 8,000 square meters," Lim said. He also compared the Manila Ocean Park with Hong Kong Ocean Park adding that although it has lots of fun rides, "the Hong Kong Ocean Park showcases a smaller oceanarium."
The Oceanarium will feature more than 20,000 marine inhabitants of approximately 300 species. And unlike other oceanariums in Asia, the Manila Ocean Park will be getting marine species from our own waters.
"The park aims to combine education with entertainment," said Barbers. "One of the main thrusts of Manila Ocean Park is to promote awareness about marine conservation and preservation."
A memorandum of agreement was signed recently by the Manila Ocean Park and the Department of Education (DepEd) to develop a comprehensive school program and an advocacy campaign dubbed "Love for Marine Life" to be included in the curriculum of students in Grade 3 and 4.
"We expect some 1.5 million visitors to Manila Ocean Park in 2008," said Tina Santos, Manila Ocean Park marketing manager.
A team of marine biologists and scientists has been working together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in putting together the various aquariums. She added that the park would not include protected and endangered species.
On a daily basis, an appoximately 10,000 guests can be accommodated in the park. Aside from providing jobs to 2,000 Filipinos, the project would earn the government Php 20 million annually in rental fees.
A Deeper Experience
The Manila Ocean Park’s Oceanarium promises a "deeper experience" as it features an assortment of colorful fishes and invertebrates indigenous to the Philippines and Southeast Asia contained in 12,000 cubic meters of seawater.
The Oceanarium journey is divided into six sections and each section will carry a Filipino name: "Agos"; "Bahura"; "Buhay na Karagatan"; "Pating"; "Ang Kailaliman"; and "Laot".
It replicates the water flow from a fresh water source that eventually leads to the open ocean, creating a model of interconnectedness between land and sea.
It then takes one through the different depths of the sea showcasing each area’s beautiful and natural inhabitants.
Its main attraction is a 25-meter long, 220 degree curved acrylic walkway tunnel. Visitors will be exploring the secrets of the ocean and surrounded by such underwater wonders without actually getting wet.
The Oceanarium also has a multi-purpose hall which will house interactive multi-media educational exhibits and capable of hosting various functions.
After the journey, one can enjoy a sumptuous meal at "Tagpuan", an al fresco dining facility. Entrance fees will range between Php 200 (for students) to Php 400.
More Attractions
Aside from the Oceanarium, Manila Ocean Park will have a marine–themed mall and a boutique hotel, which are scheduled to open late next year. The mall will feature new and unique shops that are not commonly found in other malls and a unique restaurant row located at the rear of the facility, alongside a promenade that offers an unobstructed view of the Manila Bay. This part of the park is free and accessible to the public.
The 120-room hotel will also have a marine theme. Rooms facing the bay will have an uninterrupted view of the ocean and the renowned Manila Bay sunset, while others will have one wall of aquarium in the privacy of their own room, which will be a first-of-its-kind in the world.
The Concourse Plaza, located at the main entrance of the park is the central activity area for the facility. This is where various big events will take place throughout the year.
For those who would like to snorkel or even dive without having to go to far-flung places, the two Open Water Marine Habitats will give you that exact experience. This facility is scheduled to open in April 2008.
Manila Ocean Park is owned by China Oceanis Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of China Oceanis Inc., a Singaporean-registered firm that has operated four oceanariums in China.

Manila Ocean Park nears completion, targets July ’08 opening
TOURISTS AND KIDS AT HEART who want an underwater experience — without literally having to get wet — can flock to the country’s first marine-themed complex by July next year.
Located behind Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park, Manila Ocean Park will house an oceanarium, a mall, a boutique hotel, a restaurant strip and open marine habitats all rolled into one, designed to give everyone a "deeper experience."
The P1-billion project of China Oceanis Philippines, Inc. — a joint undertaking of Singaporean and Malaysian investors — is currently 80% complete, with the Oceanarium set to open in time for this year’s Christmas holiday.

Oceanarium, the first phase of the park, will be the first and largest aquarium facility in the country wherein over 20,000 exotic and colorful fishes would come from the waters off Cavite and Palawan.
Tina Mistica-Santos, marketing manager of Manila Ocean Park, said the oceanarium is way bigger than the famous Sentosa Underwater world in Singapore. "Manila Ocean Park is about 8,000 square meters wide, while Sentosa is 6,000," she told reporters, adding that the main attraction of the Oceanarium is a 25-meter long, 220-degree curved acrylic walkway tunnel, compared to the standard oceanarium with a 180-degree view.
"It replicates the water flow from a fresh water source that eventually leads to the open ocean, creating a model of the interconnectedness between land and sea. It then takes one through the different depths of the sea-showing each area’s beautiful and natural inhabitants," she said.
One side of the tunnel’s wall, Ms. Santos said, will feature corals and small fish, while the other wall will have sharks and rays.
She added that Oceanarium is divided into sections that carry Filipino terms. Some of them are Agos, a rainforest-themed part with freshwater species in eight tanks; Bahura (Reef), a section composed of 48 tanks showcasing artificial corals; Laot, a long tank featuring big fishes and Eagle-spotted rays; and Kalaliman, wherein barracudas would swim around in one large tank.
"The Oceanarium also has a multipurpose hall that could be used for educational exhibits and various functions all year long," Ms. Santos said.
Both the Oceanarium and the Open Water Marine Habitat — where visitors can swim and scuba-dive with sharks and other fishes — will contain 12,000 cubic meters of seawater coming from Manila Bay.
Scheduled to open April next year, a boutique mall and a 100-room high-end hotel will form part the second phase of the project. "It will feature new and unique shops that are not commonly found in other malls. It will likewise showcase a unique restaurant row located at the rear of the facility, alongside a promenade that offers an obstructed view of the Manila Bay," Ms. Santos said.
Ms. Santos said the Oceanarium is expected to accommodate 1.5 million visitors, while the boutique mall will have a foot traffic of 28,000 individuals per day. — L. N. P. Lee

Daxim Lucas, PDInquirer
A massive aquarium and adjoining commercial establishments being built on the edge of Manila Bay are expected to draw in P1 billion in investments, the operator of the facility said Monday. In a news briefing, officials of China Oceanis Philippines Inc. said the amount would be infused into the infrastructure of the so-called “oceanarium,” plus the shopping mall and hotel that would rise in the area.
The Manila Ocean Park’s oceanarium -- a 12,000-cubic-meter aquarium -- would cost P600 million, company officials said. The facility is being built by a consortium of Chinese, Singaporean and Malaysian investors, led by Singapore-based China Oceanis Pte. Ltd.. which in turn is owned by the China Oceanis group of companies.
Touted as one of the largest tourism investments of the year, the oceanarium is being built on an abandoned 8,000-square meter platform jutting out into Manila Bay, just behind the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. The platform was originally intended for a casino facility but was abandoned after the investor lost interest in the project.
The company said the project would be “at par” with the world-famous Singaporean Sentosa underwater world, although the Manila Ocean Park would feature a “fusion concept” that would be the first in the Asia-Pacific region. “The sprawling three-acre development boasts of an oceanarium, a mall and a high-class hotel in one compound,” the company said in a separate statement.
The first phase of the park, its aquarium facilities, is set to open on Dec. 15, 2007. The mall would be launched in April 2008, while the 150-room hotel would begin operations by July 2008. Company officials expect up to 1.5 million visitors to the oceanarium yearly once it is fully operational, while the boutique mall -- with a maximum of 30 stores -- is expected to have as many as 28,000 shoppers a day. China Oceanis leased the platform from the Philippine government for 25 years.
Company officials expressed hopes that the facility would revive the tourism industry in the area which has been on the decline in recent years as local and foreign tourists shifted preferences to out-of-town locations. “A good attraction would always draw people,” China Oceanis president Lim Chee Yong said in a statement. “The Philippines is a good place to visit, but we believe that there aren’t enough tourist attractions in Metro Manila.”

I think a butanding or whale shark is not going to stay alive in captivity... since it mainly feeds on planktons and unlike the pilot whales or killer whales or dolphins that feed on fish....
flymordecai October 24th, 2007, 09:10 AM ^^ I really doubt they will allow a huge animal like the butanding in there. Unlike killer whales or dolphins, they have much more specialized diet and will probably not survive the conditions in the park.
amras October 24th, 2007, 02:18 PM ayon sa previous articles, di raw sila maglalagay ng endangered species... so most probably we wont be seeing whale sharks...
allan_dude October 24th, 2007, 02:22 PM ^They can display juvenile butandings as long as they can maintain them well, like in Atlanta or Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.

Halos lahat naman ng marine spicies (pati mga endemic) natin sa Pinas endangered na. tulad ng mga sea horses and giant clams. Ano naman kaya ilalagay nila? Bangus, telapia, hito-hito, bisugo?
Bosnyboy October 24th, 2007, 03:39 PM Err jsut a side comment. The oceanarium in japan, im not sure if its in osaka, has several whale sharks in their tanks. I think its more than 2. And i saw from this video, the workers there feed them tons of planton by dropping them in an area on top of the tank. The whale sharks seemed to know where the particular area is where they can feed. That makes them smart species of sharks.

Butanding and Dugong may not be accomodated , One is the fish is too big and second Dugong is an endangered species!

Uhhmm... Well, there's also an oceanarium in Osaka Tempozan in the Bay Area known as Osaka Aquarium or Kaiyukan as they call it.
I was there last Summer and it has this huge tank filled with manta rays, large fishes and a 15-16 ft whale shark.
I believe that Kaiyukan is much larger than the planned Manila Ocean Park with the facility occupying the whole 6-7 storey building. However, I must say that witnessing our own marine biodiversity is a superb thing per se and a prime feature of our new cradle of learning and fun. :)

In addition to those, we Filipinos can also visit Museo ng Bangko Sentral, the National Museum's Museum of the Filipino People (former Finance building) and the National Art Gallery (former Legislative building). The latter two offer free admission every Sunday.
Anyways, I proudly say that these three museums are at par and can be laid vis-a-vis with other world renowned museums such as that of Paris' Musee du Louvre, London's Natural History Museum and New York's American Natural History Museum. This I can declare, disregarding any conceit or arrogance and without any further ado, since I myself was fortunate enough to be there and witness these berths of learning.
Above all, seeing Spolarium and the discontinued plans of Manila and the Philppine Capitol City aka Quezon City in their grandeur is a totally rewarding and unexplainable experience per se.
It is quite disappointing though that many Filipinos don't know or even bother to go and appreciate our museums. These hidden gems are otherwise being enjoyed more by Foreigners themselves... I hope that the Manila Ocean Park can be enjoyed and supported by Filipinos as it commences on December.
Thanks for giving us more updates in the future Rence!

i agree with you @gellox....that these are world class museums...except the national art gallery....medyo nde na maintain masyado...at ang collections ay limited...but the rest....we can be proud of them...in addition....visit the museo pambata even if you do not have kids...the kid in you will be amused...its definitely better than the one that i saw in sydney....try also visiting...the metropolitan museum...the bahay tsinoy...the casa manila...the san agustin collection....the..ccp museum...the gsis museum....pag natuhog mo ito sa isang araw....you will wonder how blessed we are...with all these treasures....

I'd have to disagree. Because my school is Singapore-based, we import a lot of Singaporean reading materials, from our books (called study guides), to our exams, coursework assignments, and other educational stuff. And I can say that I've had a lot of headaches just trying to analyze some of the questions which can be confusing at times because of grammatical errors. Minsan pati tuloy ako parang nabobobo na rin sa english. hahaha
But to be fair... I believe we've all had our share of grammatical mistakes, no one is perfect, world peace, I thank you! :D
icarusrising November 6th, 2007, 01:55 PM Enough of grammar, English, Singapore, world peace and let's go back to the Miss Universe Pageant ... Err... to the topic which is Ocean Park... Right?
Lim inspects Ocean Park work
Natalie Jane M. Malayo
November 6, 2007
Manila Bulletin
Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim conducted yesterday an inspection tour of the site of the Manila Ocean Park (MOP) which is slated for soft opening next month.
Although the park will be operated by a private entity, China Oceanis Group, MOP vice president for corporate affairs Tina Romualdez said Lim has already made arrangements with its president, Lim Chee Yong, so that the city’s underprivileged youngsters, such as those from the public schools and orphanages, will also be able to get a chance to enjoy the park free of charge.
At the same time, Lim Chee Yong assured Lim that a special discount will be given to visitors who are Manila residents.
Lim was accompanied in the tour inspection by Lim Chee Yong, Romualdez, vice president for sales and marketing Armi Ruby Marie Cortes, marketing manager Tina Santos, Steve Tamayo of the Ozeano restaurant chain, City Hall Police Office Chief Senior Inspector Alex Gutierrez, and Manila Police District Station 5 commander Supt. Jojo Rosales.
The group made the rounds of the whole site, including the partially constructed glass tunnel where the visitors will get to see the some 200 species of marine life up close.
The tunnel, as explained by Santos, will be a 25-meter walk. It will be curved 220 degrees tunnel instead of the usual 180-degree tunnels built in other countries, so that the visitors can better appreciate the marine species.
Lim said that aside from the security which will be provided by the MOP, Manila policemen will also be fielded in the vicinity to ensure the safety of the visitors who are expected to flock there once the park is fully operational.
The mayor expressed confidence that the ocean park will boost the city government’s economy as its operations will generate much-needed revenues, jobs and entice more tourists to visit Manila, given the uniqueness of the world-class marine-themed park.
Romualdez also revealed that a row of restaurants led by Tamayo, a hotel with 100 bedrooms, two open water marine habitats and multi-purpose function facilities will also be found in the park which will house the biggest aquarium facility in the Philippines.
The ocean park, she said, comes as an addition to the historical sites which serve as tourist attractions in Manila, since it is strategically located at the back of the Quirino Grandstand and a few meters away from the Rizal Park .
Cortes said the project is a joint undertaking of Singaporean and Malaysian investors and is aimed at showcasing the flora and marine fauna species found in the Philippines and educating the public on them.

Mr. Leechtat, Manila Ocean Park location is at the back of Quirino Grandstand
the end portion of Luneta. If you want to see its construction, all you have
to do is stop at Roxas blvd. seawall near the U.S. embassy, look at south
harbor portion and you will see the dome now with its steel beams at erection
stage. It will have a big tank and a clean salt water for all marine species
common to our philippine seas and it will not mix of course to the waters of
the polluted manila bay.

kiretoce November 21st, 2007, 04:31 PM haha, ginawang turo-turo ang ocean park. point & grill.
But when you think about it, that's a novel idea for a seafood restaurant. Large pools/tanks of various fish that you can choose from for your lunch/dinner. Diners can also try their hand at fishing for their meal, it'll bring the dinning experience to a whole new level. :okay:
brownman November 21st, 2007, 05:16 PM ^^ true, maybe they can try to incorporate the idea and put up an area like this resto w/ big pond where u can just point a fish and then grill it afterwards.hahaha
bustero November 22nd, 2007, 09:44 AM spoke with them, Jan 26 na nga. di umabot sa finishing , punchlisting na lang but dami little things, not so easy kasi first of it's kind na project. sayang iyung isda daw readyng ready na magperform haha nabitin

drayq2002 December 6th, 2007, 05:38 AM Hey guys,
Any news if tuloy ang soft opening sa Dec. 15?
mukhang malabo. saw their AVP for marketing being interviewed on ANC about 2 weeks ago and she said that the soft opening might be moved to last week of December, the earliest.
Bosnyboy December 6th, 2007, 02:05 PM Visited the site last saturday afternoon, saw only a handful working. Exterior is hardly finished. Interior wala pa talga. It will probably take a few more months before the soft opening
_zner_ December 6th, 2007, 04:22 PM ^^ nothing's new.. 2 yrs ba naman ako sa ssc.. lahat talaga ng magagandang projects nadedelay.
AH-7Raja December 6th, 2007, 04:27 PM The whole complex that stands along the sea banks looks very much a safety concern.

i agree, from the looks of it... bka sa Feb pa to magbubukas. anyway meron namang dolphin and sealion show sa metrowalk na pwdeng pgtiyagaan for the time being  malapit ng matapos yung aquarium nila.
Chessbuff December 7th, 2007, 05:19 PM [ Dolphin Show, Metrowalk ]There is trouble in paradise. These performing dolphins are starved so they can be trained to do undolphin-like acts. Their natural habitat is the open ocean and not a chlorinated pool. Chlorine will cause them to go blind within a few years. Many dolphins suffer and die during transport between venues. The entrepreneur earns the bucks while the dolphins are captive and work with no prospect of being liberated. All this pain just for your entertainment. Sorry, but animal shows have horror stories behind the performances. Please think twice before patronizing such shows. You must have something better to do than watch animals perform for life-sustaining food. Thanks for listening, and cheers.

thomasian December 8th, 2007, 07:33 AM How about the ocean adventure dolphins? They do use the sea, Subic Bay's water to be exact; I think that's fine?

Hi ncbmandy! Actually, I wasn't there for reasons I can't help. I've
seen the press coverage of the event on the web though. I thought
it was quite creative of PAWS, EII-Philippines, Agham and Kalikasan
to perform a mock dolphin show and also a death-in. Please open your
hearts and minds to issues concerning animal welfare. They are part
of God's creation too.
Jarvijarv December 15th, 2007, 04:22 AM ...it was bound to happen. the opening is now delayed to the first week of February. Apparently they want to have most of the attractions open, including a 'glass bottom boat' which will go over the aquarium....i'll be in Manila till the first week of Feb, so i'll keep my fingers crossed:ohno:

MANILA, Philippines – The country’s first oceanarium has delayed its opening to the first week of February to finish the construction of additional attractions like a glass-bottom boat ride.
“We want to finish all our new attractions before opening the ocean park to the public,” said park marketing manager Tina Santos.
Among the new activities, according to Santos, would be the glass-bottom boat ride on top of the Buhay na Karagatan section, which has a 25-meter walkway with curved acrylic walls to show corals, small fishes, sharks and rays.
“With the glass-bottom boat, visitors could observe the interactions among marine species from a different point of view,” Santos said.
The boat that could accommodate 10 people would be manually pulled from one end of the aquarium to the other so as not to disturb the fishes.
“Patrons could interact with resident biologists and ask questions about the ecosystem during the boat ride,” Santos said.
As to accusations by animal rights groups such as the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that the ocean park “only keeps animals in captivity and away from their homes,” Santos said they were serving as custodians of the Philippines’ vast marine resource.
“It is a largely unknown fact that the Philippines forms 70 percent of the global epicenter of marine biodiversity, known as the Coral Triangle,” she said.
“Apart from giving Filipinos the opportunity to learn more about its own riches, the Manila Ocean Park also sends a strong message to the public to help protect and conserve this heritage that the country has been blessed with, ” she added.
The park will integrate sustainability factors in its initiatives, such as information, education and communications campaign; science research programs, resource management programs, and day-to-day operations.
Manila Ocean Park also embarked on a science research program on the development of a technology for coral propagation and reef rehabilitation in cooperation with Professor Benjamin Vallejo of the University of the Philippines.

Jarvijarv December 21st, 2007, 05:16 AM ...lets hope this interior is moving as fast as well. do you think they can get all the coral, fish, water, plumbing, etc. done as well in a month? has anyone seen or know how it's going on in the inside?
brownman December 23rd, 2007, 07:51 PM so any recent pictures? i've only seen the oceanarium from it's renderings, other than that wala na.
