What. I didn't know it was being built right behind the Quirino Grandstand. All this time I thought this was being built near the Mall of Asia.

December 27th, 2007, 09:21 AM
I think it is safer and cheaper to build this in Quirino Grand Stand than in MOA. Quirino GS already have Water Breaker while in MOA, they have to build the Water Breaker to support this structure or they are going to build this on Land. The effect of this being built on top of the water look sreally cool.

Nope. A world class stadium will not fit there. Perhaps a 500 meter high tower will do, and we'll call it, Jose Rizal Tower, or Philippine Centennial or Millenium Tower.

However we do need to build some world class stadium or olympic sports complex and village somewhere around the reclaimed area at manila by or cavite, where we can also build an olympic size stadium in the future if we will ever host a world summer olympic games.

Re: SM Arena. I think it will be just a coliseum, about the size of ultra or cuneta, and smaller than araneta. It will certainly add to our sporting facilities but cannot yet address the need for a "world-class" sports complex for international events, something that we can be proud of.

oh btw, pandi, bulacan, may also be an ideal new location for our naia replacement, and perhaps we might as well build there our next olympic village and stadium... pandi only has a 48,000 population, and is conncted with nlex highway...

To be exact Pandi ang isa sa mga "teritoryo" (may quotation meaning iba meaning ko!) ko rito sa Bulacan, ang isa ay ang Malolos City. May problema nga lamang sa sinasabi mong airport: Too expensive and people would oppose to it, hintayin na lang natin ang Clark. Maraming kasing bukirin diyan. Hindi kabit ang Pandi sa NLEx. Lalabas ka pa ng Bocaue at dadaan ka pa ng Santa Maria.

To be exact Pandi is one of my "territories" (has quotation marks meaning I mean the other thing!) here in Bulacan, the other one is Malolos City. There is only one problem with that is that it is too expensive and people would oppose to it, let's just wait for Clark. There are too many farmlands there. The NLEx is not connected with Pandi. You have to exit in Bocaue and you must pass through Santa Maria.

All set for opening of Manila oceanarium (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/metro/view/20080112-111848/All-set-for-opening-of-Manila-oceanarium)

MANILA, Philippines – The country’s first oceanarium is set to open next month despite opposition from animal rights advocates.

Officials of the Manila Ocean Park (MOP) announced this yesterday as they signed a partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), a wildlife conservation group.

The WWF, in partnership with the MOP, said it believes the marine park has “immense potential to create and further awareness for the country’s marine environment and the myriad issues assailing it.”

“Displaying three or four of a certain kind of marine specie, a fish which lays thousands of eggs, for instance, would not harm the ecosystem. Instead, it might help build awareness among people on the need to protect and conserve marine life,” said Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan, WWF vice chair.

“The bottom line here is balance,” he added. “There are some species you can exhibit for awareness and support, some which you cannot.”

Animal rights groups such as the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) earlier claimed the ocean park “only keeps animals in captivity and away from their homes.”

Peta-Asia campaigns manager Rochelle Regodon earlier said marine parks would only teach people that “it is acceptable to keep animals in captivity—bored, restricted, lonely and far from their natural homes.” Peta also urged the public to boycott the aquarium to show their objection to keeping animals in captivity.

Controversial

But Tan said the WWF would see to it that the controversial park integrate sustainability factors in its initiatives, such as information, education and communications campaign, and science research and resource management programs.

WWF, according to its president, Dave Valdes, would focus on the educational aspect, including the creation of training and development programs.

“One effective way to educate is to inspire. We also intend to craft the very critical message of providing education that many Filipinos are hungry to learn,” Valdes said. “But it’s not enough to know, we want the people to become involved in conservation. It’s important that it becomes part of our everyday lifestyle.”

The accord, he said, hopes to raise public awareness on the richness of Philippine marine life, the imperatives of conservation and the interdependence of habitats and ecosystems in conservation and major threats to the destruction of ecosystems and species in a local and global context.

“The WWF will also check on the MOP’s commitment to adhere to sustainable development principles in the process of species acquisition, maintenance and delivery of services to the public,” Valdes added.

The MOP promised not to show protected and endangered species like whale sharks, unless these are captive-bred from Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species-certified farms and facilities.

The park is owned by China Oceanis Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of China Oceanis Inc., a Singaporean-registered firm that has operated four oceanariums in China.

I think that's the perfect place for it. If the Mall of Asia is the anchor attraction in the southern end of the bay, then Manila Ocean Park would be the northern anchor attraction. Stringing out the tourist attractions along the bay can make Roxas Boulevard comparable to the likes of the Strip in Las Vegas, Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, or Ocean Drive on Miami's trendy South Beach. :okay:

Why would that area be needing more restaurants when there is MOA around the corner ? They have more than a dozen restaurants there I'm sure. Then, you've got what gridloc mentioned above the places like Pepper Steak, Dencio's and such, that should be enough somehow... Although, I bet it would still be fun to have the old board walk with establishments somewhere close by together with all these developments in the area. Too bad I didn't get to experience walking down that old atienza's board walk along Roxas Blvd while it was existing each time I would visit the Philippines in the past.

Manila Ocean Park, WWF work together to promote marine biodiversity (http://blogs.inquirer.net/insidescience/2008/01/17/manila-ocean-park-wwf-work-together-to-promote-marine-biodiversity/)
By Alex Villafania
INQUIRER.net

THE SOON-TO-BE opened Manila Ocean Park (MOP) has tied up with the conservation group World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF) largely to highlight public awareness, as well as to monitor the MOP’s adherence to local and international laws on animal acquisition and maintenance.

The partnership aims to strengthen the WWF’s public information on the protection of marine ecosystems in the Philippines through the educational materials provided by the MOP to visitors. The WWF will also ensure that the MOP does not include protected or endangered species of marine life as part of its exhibits.

MOP president Lim Chee Yong told reporters that the park, which will open in February this year, has been given strict limitations not to include protected species of marine flora and fauna, which includes wild corals, sea turtles and all marine mammals.

The only time that the MOP can maintain such protected animals is if some caught specimens are unable to fend for themselves due to physical injury but otherwise, the MOP cannot keep such creatures.

MOP will also hire marine sciences experts, mostly coming from the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute. One expert is UP assistant professor of Environmental Science Benjamin Vallejo, who said the MOP can also serve as a research facility. Potential studies they could be conducting are human-assisted coral farming as well as testing the effects of global climate change on local species of coral.

WWF vice chairman Jose Lorenzo Tan said the MOP is a good venue for informing the public regarding the importance of the country’s marine ecosystems, as well as the dangers of disregarding it. While the MOP will only maintain up to 300 species of marine creatures, Tan said this number already represents the sea ecosystem of the Philippines.

Tan said the WWF will continuously provide the MOP with the latest information on marine sciences and will collaborate with them on the educational materials to be developed for their environmental conservation drives.

The MOP will initially open its oceanarium, a huge facility housing several water tanks. It will then build a park and a hotel after the opening. The entire facility will cost approximately P1 billion to build.

the features

Agos(Flow)

Enter the journey and witness water cascading from an artificial waterfall that flows into 8 different water tanks displaying various flora and fauna. The water flow replicates the fresh water source that eventually leads to the open ocean, creating a model of the interconnectedness between land and sea. The rocky shoreline is showcased in a Touch Pool where one can physically encounter animals on display.

Bahura(Reef)

The Philippines is home to a vast number of coral life forms. Bahura is a series of 48 tanks that feature the very colorful Philippine underwater rainforest. Be fascinated with the multiple hues and diverse life forms found in our Philippine coral reefs.

Laot(Fishing Ground)

Four big distinct aquariums will display an assortment of fish in all sizes and colors. These impressively large exhibits will definitely be a sight to behold.

Buhay na Karagatan(Living Ocean)

Experience a slice of ocean life! Enjoy a breathtaking 25-meter walk along an underwater tunnel and experience how marine animals interact with each other in their natural habitat. This main feature of the Oceanarium provides an unmatched and truly awesome encounter with the rich underwater world.

Ang Kalaliman(The Deep)

Ang Kalaliman’s deep sea resident is the barracuda - known for its toothy grin as the “Tiger of the Sea”. Be mesmerized by one of the ocean’s most interesting and sometimes feared inhabitants.

Overhang tank

Watch a variety of rays fly over while you're under this unique Overhang Tank. Walk beneath these magnificent creatures and marvel at how freely they swim and interact with each other.

Pating(Shark)

The Philippines is home to several species of shark. Come fact-to-face with the wonderful, often misunderstood, predators of the sea – only here at MOP

Alam nyo masyado paring maliit yang ocean park natin. Unlike in Canada, their Marine Land is also equipped with rides that yu can find in typical theme parks, and they are still expanding! While ours cannot be expanded b/c it has a limited land area, and no much space to spare for expansion. Not unless if we somehow turn the Manila South Harbor into a restricted modern domestic seaport only for water rides and other water taxis, that is also capable of handling passenger hovercrafts similar to what the UK and France have. While moving all other seaport cargo handling and other long distance passenger ships upnorth from manila north harbor upto Malabon. In this case, our Ocean Park may expand upto the PICC grounds in the future and joining the Star City to make it a huge theme park w/ additional marine aquariums to be built around it.

Also I think the philippine government should turn the stretch from ocen park/luneta and Fort Santiago to the PICC grounds into an exhibition place, similar to what the canadians did in toronto's southern part of lakeshore now called, The Canadian National Exhibiton Place. The only difference will that ours will have an ocean park and a historical fort.

Since we also have the CITEM at Buendia, where we can find our int'l exhibition place, we also have the Star City that can become a permanent theme park. In the future, we can probably host some F1-F3 racing and other type of auto racing tournaments at the stretch of the Roxas Blvd that goes around the streets of Malate and back to Buendia or Quirino ave. If we do that, our Ocean Park will look big because it will also share the STar City theme park. Plus, w/ the development of the Bay City area, the whole grounds from Luneta to Baclaran will become a grand theme park or our own version of a total entertainment disctrict!

Its just my opinion. I think its possible.

Im not sure. But i think the philippines should still have the jurisdiction and sovereign of that piece of land, not unless if it is being rented partly by the United States under any foreign investment laws. I know they keep a lot of secrets underneath it and it is actually an alternative military bunker as well.

Yeah, embassies and consulates are part of the jurisdiction of a foreign country, and the host government cannot just take over it without creating a serious international incident. Included here are other facilities covered by international treaties, like the US base in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. No matter how intense the animosity between the two countries, di pa rin mapatalsik ng Cuba ang US.

from the looks of it, i think only the covered aquarium wing can be opened this summer. The other features like the retail area may be opened later. methinks that they should open only after the whole structure and all the attractions are ready.

Why should there be an opposition always?
Why is it that no matter how bright the future holds, there are these people who see the futile side of every progress?

Do these people really need to be ubiquitous and omnipresent?
By far, who are these people anyways?

Do they have the credentials to say that a structure is stable or in danger of collapse?
Do they have the experience to witness such facilities worldwide and therefore compare ours with what they've seen outside?

...
I am fortunate enough to visit the Osaka Aquarium (Kaiyukan), Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, the Aquarium at Pier 39 San Francisco and so with its counterpart at Monterey, CA. With that, I am proud to say that with these developments arising at our very own Manila Ocean Park, it is indeed at par with those being offered by the best aquariums in the planet.

Regarding the stability per se, I just can't give my comment because I wasn't around when the base and foundation are being constructed. Likewise, Engineering and Architecture aren't my field of expertise so there you go. (19 yr old Nursing Student lang po ako eh... hehe) Saka how would I be able to raise an impression regarding the framework and support eh I haven't seen the plan; and the fact that more of it is beneath the sea so paano yun?

Finally, it is dreadful to see that a Tagalog writer comments, "di kaya gumuho yang MOP ninyo??"

Usage of words does matter a lot. It won't sound that sarcastic if he had made it this way, "di kaya gumuho yang MOP natin??"

Afterall, the Manila Ocean Park, although funded and built by China Oceanis, still is a Filipino property and an icon for tomorrow.

I dunno...
People are destined to express their grievances but a lot of times, they need to be factual too and not just merely bunch of great pretenders...

Sorry po... ang dating po kasi sa akin ng ibang mga kumento ay tila baga mapanghamak in the sense that most of them are baseless and aired by individuals who aren't that adept with the field in which their negative comments angle at...Parang hindi mga Pilipino yaong mga naglalabas ng ganitong uri ng saloobin.

Just an observation, aside from the ongoing construction of the acquarium, it also noticeable that rubbish are all over the place. Just looking at those construction site photos it is not a very safe place for the workers to be in that kind of environment. Construction materials side by side with rubbish.

In Las Vegas we have billion dollar constructions going on which dwarfs the construction site of Manila Ocean Park but I have never seen anything similar to the one in the Philippines.

Boss, maybe we can all work together and help each other find any links that will lead us to the MOP's engineering design. So far wala pa akong nakikita. But i found this link about the builder of MOP: http://www.jobsdb.com/PH/EN/Job.asp?R=JDBP049813499&59793 :)

Take a look again at its foundaion here:
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/oceanpark.gif

Im not an engineer, but as far as my knowledge is concern, wala pa akong nakikitang ganyang klasing foundation. Because, normally they pour in hard cement at the bottom of the foundation before they install all the required supports and earthquake proof materials/devices. In the MOP situation, it seems like they only dugged up some holes and placed those skinny wooden or cemented pillars, probably with some supporting steel beams inside it. But the thing is, if they didn't pour any cement at the bottom, it might tend to sink in the long run, one by one, and that may cause an imbalance of the foundation that may eventually lead the whole complex collapse, which knock-on-wood hopefully its not gonna happen... Because a thick hard cement at the bottom will atleast give some protection and an equal balancing of those pillars, so kahit lumindol and depende sa intensity, di basta basta lulubog ang mga pillars na yan or break them apart. The whole supporting pillars looks like the ones they are using in building some bridges.

In fairness, so far mukhang di naman ganun kabigatan ang structure sa taas pera lang pag ito eh matapos na, the weight of the pipol and the materials may add more and stress out the structures below... but still, the main concern here is the main base of the foundation.

Ang tanong lang ngayon, is the MOP an earthquake proof structure or not? Any words?

I hope someone here can enlighten everyone and give us hope.

I will give you guys an example link about the building of an earthquake proof structures:

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/3916578.html
"An earthquake-proof building structure is constituted of a heavyweight, rounded base having its bottom center point resting on the specially constructed base footing, and an upper hollow shell is joined at its lower edge to the base, the weight of the base in relation to that of the shell being such that the center of gravity of the building structure is located within the base and beneath the shell."

Believe it or not, earthquake resistance is part of the design of new structures. It's required by the Building Code of the Philippines. New developments cannot be approved for construction without complying with the standards.

In respect to the foundation issue, people who can rightfully defend the design are the designers themselves. Others can give opinions based on experience or theoretical knowhows like some college professors who have been teaching their whole career life and are not exposed to actual construction methodologies. But still for people of the same profession to comment on erroneous design without factual basis and proof is unethical.

Foundations are not always composed of a combination of pier (foundation column) and footing (base of foundation) as what AH-7Raja stated. There are types of foundations that is composed only of a single reinforced concrete post like bored piles. Ocean Park's foundation may be bored piles or of another type. But one thing I'm sure about is that whoever the designer is, they can't compromise the structural integrity of the building by giving substandard foundations for everyone to see.

And yes, I believe the building is earthquake resistant. If it failed in the event of an earthquake, it is not because the building was not earthquake designed. It could be maybe because the earthquake's magnitude is greater than what the building has been designed to withstand or there was an error in the building's earthquake design analysis.

^^ i must agree...

i feel the most suited to analyze this said picture is an engineer forumer...

they can't compromise the structural integrity of the building by giving substandard foundations for everyone to see

i guess that's the reason why they prohibit bystanders from taking photos of any construction.. these contractors might get sued if someone found something fishy...

In the case of Ocean Park's piers, even after completion of the building, they will still be visible for everyone to see. If they've got something to hide there that would justify any flaw in design, they must be dumb not to conceal it with something that would enclose those piers individually to make it bigger or cover them all together. For every building a designer designs, his integrity is at stake, otherwise it will be the end of his professional career.

As with taking pictures of construction sites, you can freely do so as long as you are not standing within the property premises. Most construction contracts stipulates that until the building is finally handed/turned over to the owner/developer after its completion, the contractor owns the building so they have the right to restrict any activities within the premises, especially from someone who is not a member of the project team. It's a private property. ;)

Doesn't it take time to condition the water and acclimatize the fishes? They barely have a week before opening date. I hope the tanks are already filled and the fishes already there or at least, on their way na. Otherwise baka half-empty tanks lang makikita natin.

I don't think it looks bad at all... I'm not sure if it's just the picture only but it doesn't look too big, but I guess it should be because it supposed to house a hotel and a mini mall inside...

FrancisXavier

well, the thing that's empty is the mall/hotel area.. what they will open this month is the main attraction which is obviously cannot be seen from the outside.

Moderators,

This topic should be included in the Theme/Amusement Parks, isn't? http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=206201

MOP is definitely a theme park, and no different from manila zoo or enchanted kingdom. Thanks! :)
