Amsterdam

Noord-Zuidlijn (North-South Line)

Length: 9,5 km; (6 km underground)
New Stations: 8; (7 new, 1 to be expanded, 5 of them underground)
Average distance between two stations: 1,1 km;
Station design: Benthem & Crouwel, Amsterdam;
To be opened: scheduled at the end of 2011;

It is planned that two lines will use the new line, one (52) will be a shuttle service between Buikslotermeerplein and Zuid/WTC (and in the future further on to Schiphol Airport, although no definitive plans are made yet), the other (58) will use the same route and continue over the tracks of express tram line (light rail) 51 to Amstelveen-Westwijk. Maybe the light rail line will be converted to a full metro system in the future.

The route: http://www.rai.nl/images/rai/nz_lijn_trace_big.gif

Some pictures/impressions:

Buikslotermeerplein, northern terminus:

The new Centraal Station, which will be built under the Central Corridor under the platforms of Dutch National Railways (and will cross the existing underground metro platform) :

Ceintuurbaan Station, which will be the deepest one, because of the narrow street and the fact that demolishing buildings was (political) no option. For the two station entrances, two buildings are demolished though...It will get two tunnels with platforms below each other, with the first at 16,5 m below street level and the second at 26,5 m below street level:

Antwerp has a premetro subway-system , but they only use half of the capacity (i think there are 2 or 3 tunnels which they don't use---> brand new ) which is very sad I think
But aren't they planning an operation of those non-used tunnels?

Will the extension of the metro in Torino to Lingotto be open in time for the olympics? Aren't some of the events being held there?
I don't think the extension to Lingotto will be ready for February 2006, but if I'm not wrong for the Olympics metro will reach Porta Nuova train station
If you get a map showing where Olympic sites are in Turin and compare it with metro plan you will see the only site "touched" by metro is Lingotto (but it won't be ready in time)
Fortunately Turin has a good tram system and you can easily reach Olympic sites by tram

About metro, they are not late: they knew in advance Lingotto won't be reach by metro for the begin of 2006.
I think simply they didn't mind about Olympics; or better: they used Olympic games to speed up the project of a metro system, something Turin was waiting for so many years... And they didn't matter metro could attend to reach Olympic sites in Olympics wich last just three weeks

P.S.
I think Turin Passante Ferroviario (Railway Passing-by) will have a stop at Lingotto and it will be ready for Olympics :)

Naples

Naples metro system in last years had a big boost to increase lines and services

They're now working to complete line 1 (that is a circular line) and for line 6 (new line)
They're working even for conversion of suburban train lines city stretches (Circumvesuviana, Cumana and Circumflegrea) in metro-like lines (denominated line 3, line 4, line 5, line 7)
Line 2 (which is an underground tunnel built by FS - Italian State Railways - more than 50 years ago) now works as a metro line (with convoys doing just the metro service) and even as a railway passing-by (used by FS trains, even IC trains :bash: ; fortunately Garibaldi - the underground station where these long distance trains stop has 4 ways, so metro service can have anyway accectable frequencies; P.S. I personnally have to say "many things" to FS which seems, and since 60 years, to hinder urban and suburban railway transport of all Italian cities: idiotically it never thought it's "prioritarian" :sleepy: re-:bash: )
In next few years, when Napoli-Afragola HST Station wil be completed (North of Naples) all "national" trains will take northern rail link, and line 2 become a full metro line...
Then... there are other three lines planned: line 8, line 9 and line 10 (partially reusing old rail stretches now abandoned)

This map shows lines now in use and the stretches under construction; it even shows railways which will be "converted"

http://www.urbanrail.net/eu/nap/napoli-map.gif

This other shows the situation in 2011, when all the transportation system planned will be completed

Situation planned at end 2011

Project description:

Length is about eight kilometers, divided into two sections.
First section is 4.100 Kms long from Piazza Di Vittorio at Capodichino until Casoria FS Railway Station in piazza Dante, and crosses the towns of Casavatore and Arzano.
The second section is 4.500 kms long. It starts from Casoria FS Railway Station in Piazza Dante, crosses the town of Aftagola and reaches Afragola High Speeed Station (TAV) by means of one tunnel.

The project also plans a three-kilometer underground extension within Naples until the Archaeological Museum, interconnecting with Cavour stations of Naples metro lines 1 and 2. This extension needs two separate tunnels and new stations in the areas of the former mental hospital Leonardo Bianchi, Piazza Ottocalli, Piazza Carlo III, and Botanical Garden.

State of the art:

The project has been recently re-proposed by Responsible for Transports at Regione Campania, Prof. Ennio Cascetta.

Funding:

The hypothesis is being considered to carry out the works by means of "Project Financing".

Work scheduling:

Scheduled work completion is 2011.

Stations within Comune di Napoli:

Cavour/Museo (1, 2, 9), Foria/Orto Botanico, Carlo III, Ottocalli, Capodichino/Leonardo Bianchi, Capodichino - Di Vittorio (1) Cassano - Berlingieri, Casavatore - San Pietro, Casoria - San Pietro.

MiniMetro

The Minimetro is an alternative system to traditional methods of collective public transport. In its first phase, the Minimetro will link the urban areas between Pian di Massiano and Pincetto while in its second phase, it will link the Sant’Anna regional railway station with Pincetto and Monteluce.

Defined as a “light rail system” for its agility, space efficiency, and easy integration within the urban context, the Minimetro constitutes the most appropriate solution for Perugia, a predominantly historic city.

How the Minimetro works

The Minimetro system will consist of 25 cars accommodating up to 50 passengers each. The cars will run on rubber wheels along a pair of steel tracks.

The cars are not self-propelled. They are hooked for traction to a steel chain rope that is driven by an electric motor. In addition, because the cars run on rubber wheels, the system’s noise level is below normal environmental values.

The cars move in sequence at a frequency of under a minute and for this reason, the system is “semi-continuous.”

When the car reaches the end of the line, it is rotated by an inversion platform so that it can resume its run in the opposite direction.

Not that much metro in Copenhagen, most public transport are in busses and the S-Trains. A new metro opened two years ago, with a new line last year too. Currently no under ground parts are UC in for the Copenhagen metro (the outer parts are over ground). A new city ring is being planned right now though, it wil be totally under ground, and it will have some 16-17 stations (depending what route they'll choose). The City ring is the orange/white part:

Bari

Even Bari is building up a metro-like system
Initially it will work together with railways, but it will be upgraded to a full metro-system

From http://www.studiocirillo.com

The new metro railway Bari-S.Paolo is the first element of a wide workplan which in the next years will interest Bari and its railways.
When completed, leaving from Piazza Moro in the heart of the town, it will be possible to reach the other end of the line in 11 minutes.
Along the line, which is 9.826 m. long, are situated four stations. Each of them is also an opportunity to reorganize both vehicular and pedestrian aereas, and to start a general urban renewal of one of the most critical districts of Bari.

In Hamburg there is currently just the S-Bahn tunnel from Ohlsdorf to the Airport under construction. It is 3km long (2,5km underground) , 1 station.
click here for a small animation (http://www.s-bahn-hamburg.de/pages/airport_1.html).
And then there are construction works at the station Berliner Tor to enable a line change of the U2 and U3. U2 will then run from Niendorf Nord to Mümmelmannsberg and U3 will be a ring line like it was before WW2.

Can someone inform me of any current AND upcoming subways in Ticino/Tessin (The italian speaking region of Switzerland), thanks, the reason im interested is because i live in Lugano, and the traffic is terrible, the only public transportation are buses and taxis, so a nice metro would be good, even though Lugano's territory is small.

I don't think they will build a metro line in Lugano

Better an intelligent implementation of railways S lines to avoid people to reach the city by car

All these extensions are great news and show how the EU will still be ahead as a world region in rail-type mass-transit (metro/tram/lightrail/regional trains), particularly metro.

I'll be in Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam but it looks like none of these extensions and new lines will be ready in March.
