View Full Version : New Croatian Built Trams officially launched (Pics)
SinCity April 28th, 2005, 06:35 AM Zagreb (pop 1.2 million), the capital of Croatia has an extensive tram network which has over a 100 years history offering public transportation for its citizens.
The current tram network was needing an upgrade and instead of purchasing new trams abroad, the city authorities asked a consortium of 3 Croatian companies to come up with a new model of tram. Croatia has previously made trams for its own local needs, however this is all set to change with a new low floor tram which is set to be exported.
The guys in the Zagreb thread couldn't contain themselves, so I thought I would post some of the pictures from there.
The new tram is a Croatian design and is one of only 5 low floor trams produced in Europe. It sits 30 cms off the ground, however the difference between the tram stops is only 10cms, making it incredibly one of the easiest trams to board and unboard which is fantastic for the elderly and people in wheelchairs.
The CroTram or the TMK2200 was built by a consortium of three well know Croatian firms ...... Končar, TŽV Gredelj and Đuro Đaković. These firms specialise in locomotives, electrical engineering, etc.
The tram which was launched today will in about 15 days be fully operational on Zagreb's vast tram network. It is expected that 3 new trams will be supplied each month until the current order of 70 is fulfilled.
One of the unique features of the design is that it is the world's first axle-less tram car.
The TMK2200 is full air-conditioned, has a seperate compartment for the driver. Is fully equiped with internal and external security cameras.
It is 32 metres long consisting of 5 segments with a capacity for 202 passengers including seating for 48. The seating uses the latest in ergonomic designs.
Over 70% of the tram is built using local content which will further increase with later models.
Several countries have already expressed interest in purchasing the Croatian built trams which are considerably cheaper than their competitors. :)
I'd be interested in what people think of it ....

superchan7 April 28th, 2005, 08:55 AM Looks comparable to other modern European/Japanese trams around. Good external and internal appearance. If safety and reliability are up to standards, then it can become popular as an export.
Tonka Truck April 28th, 2005, 09:26 AM I look foward to seeing, riding and photographing them on my upcoming trip to Zagreb. :)
long foot April 28th, 2005, 11:29 AM Those pics are to small, renderings look much better:

Gatis April 28th, 2005, 11:46 AM Looks very very good - good idea to produce them!
Unfortunately tram producers in Riga seem to be too slow with their new low-floor tram. Who knows, may be in 2008 in Riga will drive not Riga built trams but Croatian ones?
Vertigo April 28th, 2005, 12:02 PM Looks nice, the design is certainly competative to other modern low-floor trams. If price and performance are also on par with the competition, this tram may become very succesfull!
@Gatis: if I remember correctly, RVR would deliver new low floor trams to Moscow, right?
bubach_hlubach April 28th, 2005, 06:25 PM Here are more the pics from the presentation 2 days ago :)

Gatis April 28th, 2005, 06:30 PM To my mind design is good. Tram looks both playful and hi-tech.
@Vertigo - you are correct. Riga City, RVR and Moscow City have treaty that both cities will invest in RVR to produce new low-floor tram. But there has been not seen real, life sized prototype. All the time RVR announces that they are working at it.
Meanwhile Riga City can not wait - there are ongoing preparation works to introduce low-floor tram. In 2007 it should start working on one line, after some years - on all lines. I have big doubts whether RVR would be ready to supply good, new trams in trwo years time.
Bitxofo April 28th, 2005, 06:46 PM It is very beautiful but it seems very made-of-plastic to me...
:(
mic of Orion April 28th, 2005, 07:26 PM great trams looks splendiferous, lol, very space age like. Love this design, way cool.

Palal May 4th, 2005, 09:58 AM Looks very nice!!! However I believe it's not the first axleless tram.
How many of these will be built? Who's making the electronics for 'em?
It also looks very light weight! (based on the fact that such a small car can tow it)
Do you have a spec sheet? Thanks!
snupix May 4th, 2005, 12:37 PM 70 trams will be built during the first phase of Zagreb's network modernization.
Here you have the specs:

It is 32m long, 2.32m wide, has configuration for 48 seats and 120 standees (configuration can change to specs) weigh approximately 30tons and cost only 2.1 million for each tram (70+) orders but it would be probably if exported somewhere between 2.5 - 2.8 million US$. Tram is whole manufactured in Croatia and about 70% of all components are of Croatian design and making. It is most likely over 150 if this trams will enter service with Zagreb Public Transport.
TMK 2200 - Length 32m, Width 2.32m, Weight 30tones, Passengers - 48 sitting and 120 standing, price tag, 2.5 million US$ FOB.

And old tram that is pulling this new tram is quite powerful unit as it normally pulls 2 more carriages as a standard.
Old Zagreb Trams - entered service in 50's and 60's...

And this TMK 2100, recent addition to Zagreb Public Transport, Entered service 1998-2002, continuing tradition of home made trams since 1892.
TMK 2100 stats, Lenght 27.4m Width: 2.2m Max speed 58km, capacity: 44 seating and 120 standing. No in service with ZET: 17.

mic of Orion January 7th, 2006, 11:42 AM great stuff:)
rab January 8th, 2006, 12:49 AM Looks great, but it is a shame that they have opted for what looks like a Combino style motor arrangement. Easy access for maintenance (no need to lift the body), but at the cost of bulky protrusions into the passenger saloon.
mic of Orion January 8th, 2006, 12:14 PM I agree, life, lol, :)
coth January 8th, 2006, 03:21 PM @Gatis: if I remember correctly, RVR would deliver new low floor trams to Moscow, right?
Afair those plans was cancelled. Right now there are several projects on low floor trams in Russia.
LVS-2005 for Piter by PTMZ and KTM 71-630 for Moscow by UKVZ
both as i heard on phase of assembling first model
here is info for 71-630 (in russian of course)
http://tram.ruz.net/tramcars/71630/
can't find anything for LVS-2005. they was talking that first model will be completed by the end of 2005, but it seems postponed by few months.
I'm not sure if LVS-2005 is tram-train.
But I do not expect some good designs...
There several more projects of low floor one car trams. Some of them already in service.
New Croatian looks pretty good.
Giorgio January 8th, 2006, 03:28 PM Nice design! But I like Athens trams better :P
mic of Orion January 9th, 2006, 12:06 AM few more pics of Zagreb new trams in Action, as of December 30th 2005 there are 10 of this on streets of Zagreb, by the year's end (2006) 50 of this trams will rumble on streets of Zagreb, an order of 170+ trams has been made by ZET (Zagreb Electric Tram Est. 1984), delivery tempo of 30-35 trams are year should end in 2010 when about 170-180 trams should be in active service replacing old Czech and German trams...
TMK or NT2200 is 36 ton tram, 32m long, 2.35m wide and has capacity for 200 passengers, maximum speed is 70kmph...

http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/hr/trams/Zagreb/2200/2200_2_ar.jpg
An Older model TMK 2100 will continue to solder on along with NT2200 for quite some time, only 16 samples have been built, it is excepted they will serve Zagreb's 4 night lines...

mic of Orion January 9th, 2006, 12:14 AM BTW, NT2200 cost about 2.5€ million or 3 million U$ FOB... Anyone interested purchasing them for there respective cities, call Koncar lol,
Koncar is a company responsible for making these trams and they are part of consortia of companies called Cro-Tram Consortium..
queetz@home January 9th, 2006, 01:04 AM Are the track gauge narrower for these trams than the more common tramways or LRT networks from other cities? Or is it the same all throughout? The trams seems very narrow but maybe they are wider in person? Please confirm.
mic of Orion January 9th, 2006, 01:05 AM ^they use 1m gauge but can be specified to each costumers specifications, Zagreb is on 1m gauge...

harsh1802 August 31st, 2006, 04:48 AM They really look gud.
Chilenofuturista August 31st, 2006, 05:38 AM God damn it!! :bash: We need those trams in Santiago!! They're as beautiful and modern as the ones from Alstom, Bombardier and Siemens + that these croatian trams are less expensive.
I'm as deeply impressed as the first time I saw crotram pictures! :master:
SinCity August 31st, 2006, 09:18 AM Thanks for the thoughts. :)
If anyone is interested in seeing these trams, one will be on show at this years "Berlin International Transport Fair" which is being held between 19-22 September. :)
So far the 35th tram rolled out yesterday on the Zagreb network. Therefore half of the first batch of 70 trams are operational on the streets. By Xmas this year 50 trams should be functioning with the last one rolled out early next year.
The good news is that Zagreb city council will order a second batch of 70 trams, taking the total to 140 units by the end of next year.
Other news is that the first tram completed its first 50,000 km test and as expected passed with flying colours. This has encouraged the CroTram consortium to commence promoting the possible export of this tram outside of Croatia. :okay:
On 26th September, the new tram will go for its first test run outside of Croatia. It will be thoroughly tested in the Serbian captial of Belgrade which want to purchase these trams for their network so as to replace the old cars still in use.
After Belgrade, the tram goes on tests runs in Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland & Germany.
Hopefully we'll see some orders placed from other Europeans cities soon.
BTW - This is one of only 5 low floor model trams produced in Europe! ;)
DonQui August 31st, 2006, 09:37 AM What are the other four?
Chilenofuturista August 31st, 2006, 10:42 PM Thanks for the thoughts. :)

You're welcome.
And that's the spirit! That's how I like things turning out for CroTram! I really love their design, it's quite unique and their interiors are very modern in all senses. I like what I'm reading on those plans to introduce them soon in other european countries, and hopefully soon we'll be having those trams in a South American capital (my wish)...
Btw, do you know which european cities that will be testing CroTrams after Belgrade? Praha? Sofia? ...?
Thanks for the information btw. :okay:
SinCity September 1st, 2006, 01:46 AM ^^ I'm not too sure in which order, but I know its Bratislava, Sofia, Bucharest as definates.
The only other bit of news is that CroTram might have been successful in its first tender. Word has it that they succesfully won the bid to supply 10 initial trams to the Polish city of Lodz. Hopefully I can get this confirmed. :)
SaRaJeVo-City September 1st, 2006, 01:53 AM Man I just hope we get to see these beauties in sarajevo....this is probably top 5 best trams in the world, go CROTRAM!
christovpeter November 21st, 2006, 11:21 PM hi,
does anybody know if sofia might actually be purchasing some of these trams, and if so how long will it be before they are opperating on the streets of sofia?
thanks,
