View Full Version : Phone companies are a shower of shits - help required
Blunther April 28th, 2005, 09:26 PM Hello
Gonna keep thangs short ';cos I've just whacked out a massive letter of comp, aint Martin G stylee.
Basically, I had a cotract phone with T-Mobile. After 12 months, I cancelled my contract. No problems so far. Bought a pay as you go sim card, and inserted it a couple of hours ago. I'm greeted by 'enter subsidy password'. So I rings up T-Moble to see what the hell this is all about. They tells me 'when you cancelled your contract, you had to request a subsidy password, which would have taken 30 days and cost fifteen quid. Now your sim card is cancelled, we can't give you one'. Now no one fucking told me about this when I cancelled my contract and informed them that I would be moving to pay as you go. If they had, I would've moaned about having to pay fifteen quid, but I would've done it in the end and all would be hunky dory. But they didn't fucking bother, and now my phone is seemingly useless, locked to their pox-ridden scumhole of a network. I've lost all my contacts, I've lost all my photos from the past year and a half. All because they want to wrench a few extra quid out of me, because now apparently the only way to unblock it is to get a t mobile sim card for three months (!) before requested a password thang.
F-U-C-K That!
the mad thing is, I had no problems with them. They seemd alright, and when I got a new phone in the future, I would have used them quite happily. But now I';l;never give them antoher fucking penny in my life, or God strike me down with fucking cowpox.
Basically, my question for the techies here:
I know you can get a phone unlocked when you enter the PIN wrong three times, or enter the PUK in wrong or something. but can I go to a dodgy market trader and get this unlocked, or do I have to buy a new fucking phone?
Cheers.
Englishman April 28th, 2005, 09:34 PM I thought after 1 year it's free to unlock a phone and it only cost money to transfer the phone number - I must be wrong.
Normally dodgy market traders can unlock a phone from one provider to another - I knew someone that could do nokia phones with his laptop at uni.
Alphaxion will know.
AndrewC April 28th, 2005, 10:10 PM yeah, your local market will help you, and despite their reputation they'll be cheaper and mor epolite than Tmobile my son.
JDRS April 28th, 2005, 10:17 PM Yeh you can get it unlocked for a tenner at the market or alternatively it may be possible for you to unlock it with a computer programme where you enter a code. I've unlocked many mobiles like this. But it may not work in this case.

By the way what company are you going with on pay as you go. I reccommend you get an 02 Genie sim that gives you 300 free texts every time you top up for free. I've had one for ages and they're excellent.
gothicform April 28th, 2005, 10:25 PM you can get simcards for five quid :)
JDRS April 28th, 2005, 10:27 PM I got an 02 genie sim from the 02 website for 99p.
Martyn April 28th, 2005, 10:48 PM why on earth do you think you need a mobile phone?
Blunther April 28th, 2005, 11:10 PM Alphaxion will know.
That#s what I thought
I know you can get a sim card for a fiver - I've got one. But my phone's locked to the network.
I've got a Tesco mobile Sim, 'cos I only call a couple of folks and it's 10p a minute and 5p a text for three chosen nukbers, which is good.
I know market traders can unlock phones where the phone's blocked because you got the pin wrong or something. I wasn't aware they could do it when the phone's blocked 'cops the company's tied it to their network.

So did I :(
Anyway, don't use T-Mobile 'cos they're a shower of shits.
O2 are shit as well.
And I'm guessing that Orange and Vodaphone are shite? :)
why on earth do you think you need a mobile phone?
I don't. Ijust want one. Indeed, I have one of my own, and some cunting company's stopping meusing it.
JDRS April 28th, 2005, 11:22 PM Yes that's the main reason people get there phone unlocked. If you take it to a market they will unlock it from it's current network allowing it to use any network. 02 have been very good in my experience and I've used Vodafone, Orange, 3 and T-Mobile too. Haven't used Tesco's package but it uses the 02 network.
Blunther April 28th, 2005, 11:36 PM My gripe with O2 was that everytime I needed to ring them, I had to wait at least half a bloody hour. And they don't tell you where you are in the queue either so you can nip off for a cuppa or a wank.
I'll try me local market then and see what they have to say. Cheers fellas.
eusebius April 28th, 2005, 11:45 PM Excuse my vulgar brevity;
most of The UK's services are complete shyte!
I'm not surprised to read Blunther's complaint. Worst business moral you'd find in either England (not Britain) and Holland (not Netherlands). You could even waste a lot of effort if you think this to be untrue. In France and Germany you'd have conditions compiled by either clients or caring personel meanwhile in Holland and England, people working for such companies feel thrilled to outsmart and cheat upon you
AndrewC April 29th, 2005, 12:17 AM why on earth do you think you need a mobile phone?
I need one because I'm not often around my friends or studying colleagues often without a house phone would have little way to communicate with people other than my housemates. Its also a lifeline to my home, especially my dad who has no email account.
Whats your smart-arse tree-hugger explanation?
dinp April 29th, 2005, 12:25 AM When I cancelled my o2 contract, I told them I would be going onto o2 pay as you go and asked if there was anything I had to do. They said no and sure enough, when the contract ended, I put in my sim card and it all worked fine.
I'd ring them up again, or post the letter you've written. I miss the Marty G moments!!!
Englishman April 29th, 2005, 12:59 AM phones get locked to certain network providers if you get it free with your contract. I.e my orange phonewont take O2 or Tmobile sim cards. however I can put any orange sim card in.
Jonesy55 April 29th, 2005, 01:06 AM I phoned to get my O2 contract cancelled the other day because i'd seen a good offer from Vodafone on a Sony Ericsson S700i and when I told them what it was they said I could have an S700i for free if I signed up to a new £10 per month 12 month contract including 100 texts and 100 any time any network minutes per month! Needless to say I was very happy
Noostairz April 29th, 2005, 01:20 AM woah woah whoah, hold your horses lads. first things first: that piss and bleach do the job blunth?
Sy April 29th, 2005, 01:53 AM There are plenty of places to get it unlocked. My local Asda has a little unlocking shop in it, not part of asda but they rent the space.
Blunther April 29th, 2005, 10:16 AM woah woah whoah, hold your horses lads. first things first: that piss and bleach do the job blunth?
Not as yet boyo :(
Says three to four days though so I give it till tomorrow.
At least I know if I run out I can make me own.

Then they're a cheeky shower of shits. It's a 'free phone', ie, it's mine. Wankers.
mk61 April 29th, 2005, 01:11 PM I've heard horror stories about all the main mobile networks, though I've never had any problems myself. I hear Orange blacklist people at the drop of a hat.
Btw - what goods a phone when you're deaf? How's the gammy ear holding up Blunth?

Deaf in one ear remember pantface.
Still gammy though I'm afraid. Otex ain't doing much good so far. I'll leave it over the weekdnd, and if I still can't hear I'll go to the doctor's next week.

Maybe you've got a ruptured eardrum mate - had that once through an infection. It took a while to heal too. I'd get round the doctors asap if I were you.
Martyn April 29th, 2005, 08:20 PM Whats your smart-arse tree-hugger explanation?
i've never hugged a tree, and my arse is hardly what you'd call smart. i have mobile phone issues though - mine seem to last about three or four months, tops, before they break and i 'have' to spend another small fortune on replacing it. five years ago you could get a decent, simple, durable mobile phone for thirty or forty quid - why can't you get them any more? they'd sell by the million.
in summary... yes, they're a shower of shits.
Rigadon April 29th, 2005, 08:33 PM Partly because they never made any money for £30 or £40- they were subsidised by the operating companies.
JDRS April 29th, 2005, 10:10 PM Maybe you should take better care of your phones if they brake after a few months. I've had phones that last well over a year.
Martyn April 29th, 2005, 11:35 PM i admit it was probably quite silly to drop my last one in the toilet :ohno:
but my first one was one of those motorola things that could deflect bullets. i dropped it at a gig once, and found it half an hour later with a bloke absent-mindedly jumping up and down on it, and it was as good as new. wish they still made phones like that.
JDRS April 30th, 2005, 01:50 PM I recommend you buy the durable Nokia 5140. It wont break if you drop it or splash water on it.
Blunther April 30th, 2005, 02:31 PM Anyone got a Samsung D500? I fancy a new phone and it looks snazzy...
Rigadon April 30th, 2005, 02:41 PM dinp does
Blunther April 30th, 2005, 03:00 PM How do you know?
Fucking 39 second rule...
Again
And again
JDRS May 1st, 2005, 11:24 AM I'm waiting for the Nokia N91, capable of holding 3000 songs and 2 megapixel camera. Nice design too.
Sy May 1st, 2005, 05:51 PM ^Could be the first in a long line of Ipod killers!
Jonny 5 May 1st, 2005, 05:59 PM Some photos of the N91

caw123 May 1st, 2005, 06:42 PM You could knock someone's head in with that brick!
Jonny 5 May 1st, 2005, 07:05 PM I isn't a brick. Its only a bit bigger than an iPod mini.
It does weigh the same as 2 Ipod minis though.........
JDRS May 1st, 2005, 08:56 PM Another similar phone is the sony ericsson w800i. It is SE's first walkman phone and has a 2 megapixel camera. Out later sometime this year it's more stylish and weighs half the N91, but has less memory.

andysimo123 May 1st, 2005, 11:55 PM I could be getting the Nokia N91 in the next few weeks and its not even out yet.
